Bio:

Trevor Bolder (9 June 1950 – 21 May 2013) was an English rock musician, songwriter and record producer. He is best known for his long association with Uriah Heep and his tenure with the Spiders from Mars, the backing band for David Bowie, although he also played alongside a variety of musicians from the early 1970s.Bolder was born in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. His father was a trumpet player and other members of his family were also musicians. He played cornet in the school band and was active in his local R&B scene in the mid 1960s. Inspired by The Beatles, in 1964 he formed his first band with his brother and took up the bass guitar. He first came to prominence in The Rats, which also featured fellow Hull musician Mick Ronson on lead guitar. In 1971 he was called in to replace Tony Visconti in David Bowie's backing band, which would soon be known as The Spiders from Mars. He subsequently appeared in D. A. Pennebaker's 1973 documentary and concert movie Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. He is name-checked as "Weird" (Bowie's stage nickname for Bolder)[citation needed] in the song "Ziggy Stardust" in the lyrics "Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Weird and Gilly, And The Spiders from Mars".Trevor "never looked comfortable as a glam-rock mannequin, tottering behind Ziggy Stardust in platform boots and a rainbow-hued outfit of latex and glitter".Bolder's bass (and occasional trumpet) work appeared on the studio albums Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973), and Pin Ups (1973), the Spiders' swan song with their leader. He went on to play on Ronson's 1974 album Slaughter on 10th Avenue which made the British Top Ten.In 1976 Bolder joined Uriah Heep, replacing John Wetton. He worked on the albums Firefly, Innocent Victim, Fallen Angel and Conquest, when the line-up that had recorded the latter disbanded, Trevor alone was left with Mick Box, guitarist, founder-member and legal owner of the band's name. The attempt to put a new line-up together temporarily stalled and Bolder, needing to earn a living, accepted an offer in 1981 to join Wishbone Ash. Trevor had, coincidentally, again swapped places with John Wetton, becoming Wishbone Ash's bass player for their 1982 album Twin Barrels Burning. It was another short-lived connection, as by 1983 he returned to the rhythm section with Uriah Heep, playing on the Head First tour (although Bob Daisley played on the album) and all albums since. As well as his usual bass playing and backing vocal duties, Bolder also produced Heep's 1991 album Different World. In 2012 and early 2013, Bolder worked with Stevie ZeSuicide (Steve Roberts of the band U.K. Subs) as producer on singles "Wild Trash" (co-writer with ZeSuicide), "Lady Rocker" and a cover of "Ziggy Stardust".Bolder also played on these tracks.Bolder, age 62, died in May 2013 at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham from cancer. He had undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer earlier that year.

Album:

TREVOR BOLDER was one the of the finest bass players from the British classic rock scene, being one of the Spiders from Mars in Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust days, part of Wishbone Ash, Mick Ronson solo stuff, and a long tenure with Uriah Heep where his vocal talents were also utilised to great effect. Before his untimely death in 2013, Trevor had been working on a solo album which, thanks to the magic of technology and some musical friends can now see the light of day under the title “Sail The Rivers“, presented last Xmas and now available via Cherry Red Records. With a top notch line up including drummer Lee Kerslake (Ozzy, and who worked with Trevor in Uriah Heep and also) sadly no longer with us too, Mr Heep himself Mick Box) & Wishbone Ash’s Laurie Wisefield on guitar, and the very good Derk Gallagher who share lead vocals with Trevor. This is timeless Classic Rock with a certain Hard Rock edge, and a sound & style similar to early Whitesnake, ’80s Bad Company / Uriah Heep, etc, plenty of melody and showcasing that Boder was more than a bass player – a fine singer and songwriter to boot as well.To make this album more poignant, Kerslake passed earlier this year, and these recodings are some kind of a testament where his drumming up a storm here. And Box and Wisefield add their considerable guitar talents to the pot in fine style. Then Derk Gallagher adds some excellent towering vocals. So what about the songs? A mixture of Trevor’s versions of songs he wrote for Heep and a few previously unreleased.‘Which Way Will the Wind Blow’ (from Different World) and ‘Rich Kid (Raging Silence)’ are heavier than the Heep versions. And that’s saying something. ‘Fear of Falling (Sea of Light)’ has Trevor singing and a reminder that the song is one of the best from Sea of Light – which in my opinion is one of Heep’s best albums.Title track ‘Sail the Rivers’ is excellent too appearing only (as far as I know) as a bonus track on the Spellbinder live album (I think the song was an outtake from the Sea of Light sessions).‘Shelter from the Rain’ (Sonic Origami) is hauntingly beautiful and sensitively delivered (Trevor on vocals again). The booming ‘Warchild’ (Wake the Sleeper) is another rocked up effort then ‘Dream On’ (Sea of Light) is another of those sensitive, well-structured arranged and delivered ballads. Trevor does the lot here – vocals, bass and guitar. The unreleased cuts are really good too and generally more acoustic / electric driven affairs and well worthy of their place here.‘Wasting My Time’ is all Trevor; acoustic and slide and a great bass line (naturally) with a delightful lilt and (this is a huge compliment) reminding me of some of the late great Ken Hensley’s early solo work both with the vocal inflexions and the simple complexity of the myriad melodies.I Had A Dream’ is another bass highlight as he shows exactly what this beautiful instrument (in the right hands) can bring to a song. The acoustic picked solo is a surprising delight too.‘Sail the Rivers’ is most certainly a superb way to remember one of the finest musicians from the irrepetible classic rock era. Trevor composed great songs & melodies, does many of the vocals as well as his inimitable bass, and adds some lead guitar too proving a talent lost, but encapsulated here.
