Melodica is a band led by Gerhard Pichler, who is Austrian guitar player and mastering engineer.Guitarist Pichler contacted good old Poley by email to ask him to take part in the project, an offer the singer accepted, putting his work on a solo album on hold (his first solo album, ‘Collateral Damage’, wouldn’t finally see the light of day until 2006), and thus beginning a prolific collaboration that led them to record five albums such as ‘Melodica’, several live or acoustic albums (the other featuring original material was “Lovemetal”, released in 2001), and another album under the name “Poley/Pichler” titled “Big”, released in 2002.The style is pure AOR with the occasional hard rock touch in the odd riff or melodic rock rhythms, without going overboard. The guitars, which are one of the album’s highlights, sound smooth and melodic, though the production is a little heavy-handed at times.It is clear that they were aiming for an elegant, classic, AOR-style sound, but the most important element is missing: grandeur in the melodies.

The debut album by this Austrian-American project featuring Gerhard Pilcher and Ted Poley.What do you do with a member of Danger Danger and Gerhard Pichler? That’s right – a band called Melodica. After Ted Poley left Danger Danger , much to the bitter disappointment of his fans, things were fairly quiet around him for a while. When I then heard about his project Bonemachine, I was really excited, yet it didn’t quite manage to bring him back into the limelight. So I’d scaled back my expectations for Melodica and approached it with caution. I was torn between Ted’s unique, unmistakable voice and the desire to see Danger Danger resurrected. With their debut album *Long Way From Home*, Ted and his co-partner Gerhard have managed to achieve a little of that, though they’re still a long, long way off – which, in turn, has disappointed me even more. I’m sorry to have to say this, but his magnificent voice has lost some of its impact, and that’s a real shame. It’s just brutal! He sounds like a complete beginner, not as though he’s got years of experience as a singer! The only tracks that appeal to me are ‘Hardest Part of Love’, which liven things up a bit after the bland songs, and ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’, which has a few recognisable elements of Danger Danger. Overall, it’s a rather boring album with tracks that are far too long. If they’d worked on the lyrics and the bland choice of music, it would certainly have turned out better.
