The permanent line-up was expanded in 2006 with the addition of guitarist Stefan Häfele, bassist Wolle Nillies and keyboardist Fabian Merkt. 2007 saw the departure of Viola Schuch, who was replaced by Ada Flechtner. Album:

We've all heard bands that fatten up their sound with an extra guitarist, like IRON MAIDEN; but three vocalists? This is not done often; the Swedish / Danish band AMARANTHE are known for an eclectic mix of female and male cleans, as well as a screamer, but German Symphonic group CORONATUS feature three, very different, classically trained female singers, and what they have done is something truly unique. "Recreatio Carminis" is an incredibly ambitious venture that fuses Heavy, Progressive and Power Metal with prominent symphonic and gothic touches and lyrical themes that touch on myth, legend and grandeur. We end up not with yet another Euro-symphonic act, but one that takes it one step further. An Orchestra-Opera created by just 7 people. The quality of the mixing is immediately evident on the opening pair, "Ouvertuere" and "Towards Horizon"; every component shines through in utter majesty. Artificial or not, the quality of the orchestral atmosphere is most authentic, and does not dominate the crushingly heavy riffage that this album will surely become known for. The drum work on the equally heavy "The Monk" is especially characterized by intricate and unusual playing, that almost gives the impression of it sounding out of time, but is in reality helping to churn forth a very powerful piece of music; Mats Kurth is clearly one hell of a drummer. "Der Gesandte" is one of many songs on this album that feature almost solely German lyrics; perhaps some neo-classical influences are reflected here, because the expertly-trained operatic vocals found are immediately reminiscent of antique opera. The slow pace is immediately picked up in "Winterrosen", where the German lyrical flourishes are carried on the back of a guitar-stallion that gallops for the majority of the song. A more traditional (I hesitate to use the term Folk) vibe is brought forth in the eclectic "So Tanzt"; the unusual drum patterns make a return, and the song almost feels like a technical Dance track, with some almost FINNTROLL-like vocal patterns. Mastering a combination of melody and keeping to such a technical rhythmic patterns sounds incredibly different, but the triplet of maidens manages it. "Fernes Land" has to be my favorite track because of its surprisingly diverse range of passages, and a beautiful melding of folk and heavy riffage that dominates the end of the song, capped off by a tasteful solo. For such an obviously technically brilliant group of musicians, I had hoped for a little more showing-off, of lead a guitar; now, I very rarely say this about a band, for I often find myself drowning in it, but I feel it would have made a nice compliment to the string and vocal work. Regardless, CORONATUS is still definitely one of the better symphonic acts of heard, and deserve to share the stage with the greats.

Album:

Formed as a project in 1999 by Mats Kurth and Georgios G., CORONATUS released its single 'Von Engeln Nur' in 2001 and debuted in 2003 as a complete band. First gigs as a double female-fronted band followed in 2004. The band started recording its debut in 2006, signed with Massacre Records in 2007 and released the debut 'Lux Noctis' in the same year. The albums 'Porta Obscura' (2008), 'Fabula Magna' (2009), 'Terra Incognita' (2011), 'Recreatio Carminis' (2013) and 'Cantus Lucidus' (2014) followed. Well, that project is still going strong and in 2015, less than a year after their previous album, ‘Raben Im Herz’ (roughly translated means "ravens in my heart") is about to hit the shelves. The compositions feature a lot of instrumental parts, which not only intensifies the joy of playing for all musicians, but also benefits the listening pleasure due to even more musical variety. The varied vocals are once again delivered by the female duo of Carmen Lorch (soprano) and Anny Maleyes (rock voice). Both singers once again show their exceptional talent in an even broader context than before - from operatic passages to dark growls! ‘Lady Of The Wall’ opens proceedings and is a mid tempo catchy number showcasing the vocal talent of both ladies - awesome! Next up, the quirky up tempo ‘König Der Nebel’ introduces Folk elements into the mix. The title track is a Symphonic masterpiece, wth pipes coming into play on the bouncy and addictive ‘Carpe Noctem’, while there is a brass sounding backing on the Symphonic bombastic ‘Hoffnung Stirbt Niemals’. The awesome momentum is continued through to the closing laid back acoustic based track ‘Frozen Swan‘, with a sniff of extreme vocals at the commencement of the track ‘Anderswelt’, one of my fave numbers from the CD as is the slow to mid tempo Folk infused ‘Canan Nan Gaidhael’. Overall, this album is a good un, with Coronatus continuing to produce the goods and consistently too. Recommended when released 4th Dec…

Album:

Every year comes again - no, not the Christ child, but CORONATUS with a new album! Although you have to be honest despite the trite and too tempting joke, because the Stuttgart Gothic / Symphonic-Formation actually took a year longer this time to work on their next album. The same now hears the name "Secrets Of Nature", presents itself as a concept album on the subject of nature mysticism - and one hears him that this time CORONATUS for their now eighth studio album actually have time. However, the Swabians did not want to miss the cast of squatters, and in the course of this they fattened up the vocal section. Because in addition to the two ladies Carmen R. Lorch (soprano) and Mareike Makosch (rock voice) now joins two other singers: soprano Gaby Koss and singer Teddy Möhrke. In terms of production technology, you could never fool around anyway, but as far as songwriting is concerned, CORONATUS have now improved considerably. Many of the titles sound more streamlined and rounder than their predecessors, which seem to be more complicated and more accessible. The opener "Howling Wind" proves that, although it often sounds like NIGHTWISH, but makes you want to do more with its good structure. Also, "The Hunter" hits the same Finnish score ("Dark Chest Of Wonders", anyone?), Seasons with a pinch of SABATON memory keyboards and brings harmonious singing duels between the sexes - finished is a formidabler song that actually earwig earwig qualities. Together with the epic "Mountain Sky" (you can hear a pinch of SERENITY epic?) And the harmonic "Sleigh To Asgard", the first half of the album presents itself as surprisingly strong. With the first German-language song "Die See" it is over with the strength quickly over again, but unfortunately the song runs, largely without elevation, tough and long-winded by ear. The ears on "The Little People Of Iceland" jerk upwards - CORONATOS has never heard that hard! The feeling is underscored by the decision to present the male vocal lines with hearty, smoky intonation, prominently in the foreground. If the song could somehow decide between bombastic chorales, blastbeats, arrangements borrowed from the pagan section, and rich riffing, whichever direction it wants to take, it would underline the effect of the vocal performance (on the album generally) more clearly. "Dance Of The Satyr" develops the effect of a sleeping pill right after the somewhat broken chunks, while "Tears of Heaven" picks up on the stylistic thread of the first album part. The big end comes to the end: a very individual interpretation of the Swedish traditional song "Mr. Mannelig", which once helped IN EXTREMO to rocking honors. There are simply titles whose mood is simply killed by an operatic vibrato - "Mr. Mannelig" in the free interpretation of CORONATUS is unfortunately one of them.Except for the outliers at the end and a few weaker songs, CORONATUS has managed a surprisingly strong album overall, which is noted that more time and attention was put into it than on its predecessors. Although the Stuttgarters can not catch up with their genes, "Secrets Of Nature" means a clear step forward!

Album:

Since SKYCLAD gave start to the combination of Metal with Folk music influences, it was the beginning of an invasion that took over Metal from the second half of the 90’s until today. To say that a band plays Folk/Pagan Metal today can cause confusion, because the genre has a lot of different ways to be played, from the harsh and aggressive extreme Metal ways to the melodic ones. And the German septet CORONATUS is a charming surprise, because “The Eminence of Nature” is a great album! Their musical work can be said as a mix between Symphonic Metal ways with a lot of Folk and Pagan influences. And their music bears some grandiose parts with charming choirs, excellent melodies, and vocals range that go from soprano tunes to harsh screams. In the due proportions, it could be said as fusion of the best moments of NIGHTWISH with a Folk/Pagan version of “Century Child” age, including the modern tunes used on the guitars.Mats Kurth produced the album with Markus Stock at his side (and this last one mixed and mastered the songs, as well as played bass guitar on the album). As usual for the genre, a clean sonority with extremely defined instrumental tunes can be heard, but the weight is presented, along with a good dose of aggressiveness as well. “The Eminence of Nature” is a double CD release, with instrumental versions of the CD 1 songs presented on CD 2. “No Planet B” can be described as a very good blend between Symphonic Metal with World Music elements (and very good work on vocals and keyboards), and “Midsommar” has the same elements, but with a stronger Folk scent (thanks to the violin parts). The catchy melodies of “S.O.P.” will hook the fans (another fine work from the keyboards and guitars), and the same can be said about “The Wilderness of the North” (besides this one has a heavier crunch, and a great work from bass guitar and drums). The lovely and tender ambiance of “Echo of Souls” is really amazing, as the accessible approach used on “The Place I Love”. On “Human Mania” and “Set Sail to North” the band focuses again its efforts on a balanced mix between Symphonic Metal and Folk/Pagan parts (and on both, very good vocals once more). And the slower rhythm of “9000 Years Ago” creates a dense and somewhat melancholic ambiance, guided by very good riffs. As I said above, on CD 2, the listeners will find instrumental versions of the songs. But it doesn’t mean that they aren’t worthy of attention, because they show clearly the very good melodies and musical arrangements, and are a good new for those karaoke addicted fans. Yes, “The Eminence of Nature” really is a great album and deserves to be heard. And CORONATUS is that kind of band that, if you don’t know their previous releases, you must do it now!

Bio:

Coronatus is a German Symphonic metal band, formed in Ludwigsburg, Germany in 1999.Fronted by two female singers with contrasting voices and styles, the band has released four studio album since 2007.Originally founded in 1999 by vocalist Georgios Grigoriadis and drummer Mats Kurth, Coronatus released its debut single Von Engeln nur in 2002. In 2004, Grigoriadis left, and was replaced by not one but two singers, Carmen R. Schäfer and Viola Schuch. The permanent line-up was expanded in 2006 with the addition of guitarist Stefan Häfele, bassist Wolle Nillies and keyboardist Fabian Merkt.2007 saw the departure of Viola Schuch, who was replaced by Ada Flechtner.Chriz diAnno (bass) has played with the band in 2003, 2005–2006, and then again since 2007. Ada Flechtner left the band to devote full attention to her studies, but joined the German symphonic metal band Voices of Destiny in 2013, after their lead vocalist Maike Holzmann departed. Mid 2010, Natalia Kempin joined the band on the vocals and Dirk Baur joined the Band on Bass Guitar. On February 2, 2011, Natalia Kempin announced at her Facebook, that she leaves the band, due to different opinions about the band's music. Band, though, chose to represent her departure through posting of lies, stating, that decision was coming from them. The band follows in the style of established groups Nightwish and Epica. Their lyrics are in German, English and Latin, and their songs deal with life, interpersonal relationships, religion and death. Their musical style is melodic, rhythmic Gothic metal[1] with influences from symphonic metal, pagan metal and medieval metal.Songs are performed by two female singers whose styles are very different. The band's first contract was in June 2007 with record label Massacre Records and their first CD was released on 21 September 2007. Their second album was launched on 28 November 2008. The band has also taken part in several concerts with groups such as Haggard and Within Temptation.

Album:

The symphonic metal genre has an eventful history and is still dominated by female fronted pioneers like Nightwish, Epica and Within Temptation, which almost belong to the general musical education. In the meantime there are countless comparable bands in the genre, and also German bands like Xandria and Beyond the Black have long been considered established. The six-piece symphonic/folk metal band Coronatus, which was founded near Stuttgart/Germany in 1999, has even two female singers at disposal, Moni Francis (alto) and Leni Eitrich (mezzo-soprano), who show their singing skills on the band‘s tenth album „Atmosphere“, which will be released on December, 3rd. Both ladies are the result of another line-up change and make their debut as new band members. The last two albums „Secrets of Nature“ (2017) and „The Eminence of Nature“ (2019) dealt with topics such as nature („Die See“, „Tränen des Himmels“) and worries about the natural resources of our home planet („No Planet B“). This guideline is also continued with the new work, as the album title „Atmosphere“ already suggests: It’s about all kinds of atmospheric phenomena that also reveal themselves daily in a figurative sense. Stylistically, I see the emphasis on richly orchestrated symphonic metal, but folk and medieval influences cannot be denied either. There are also some musical surprises, but more on that later.„Atmosphere“ is available as a digital download and as a 2-CD digipak. With the second disc you can listen to the entire album in a purely instrumental version. I don’t necessarily need that, but if you like it, you should enjoy. The actual album offers ten songs and is introduced by a short, but enjoyable intro. The following „Justice in the Sky“ is a neatly arranged symphonic metal track in which both singers with their different voices harmonize perfectly. The very high ranges are just as impressive as the powerful deeper voice. A very successful start, I dare to say. The fast-paced „To the Gods of Wind & Sun“ with its catchy chorus is also recommended. Again both ladies convince with solemn singing and lyrics, which just manage not to sound kitschy („To the goddess, who hover over, hover over this land. Hear her drumming to praise the goddess, ruling over the sunlight!“). In any case, the hooklines have untreatable potential for addiction; for me the best song on the record."Time of the Raven“, which was previously published with a music video, sounds too much like Nightwish’s „Last of the Wilds“ for my taste. Okay, it is common practice that influential bands in the genre are used as a musical pattern, but here I lack the musical independence. Speaking of Nightwish: With „Williwaw (A Musical Tribute to Nightwish)“ the Finns even have a song dedicated to them that could actually have come from the pen of Tuomas Holopainen. The song is well performed, but qualitatively it doesn’t quite come close to the legendary symphonic metal heroes. The rocking „Firedance“ with its pop music sounding chorus and the atmospheric ballad „The Distance“, which once again brings out excellent vocal performances, are recommended as well. „The Swarm“ and „Keeper of Souls“, both up-tempo songs and with a rather folky touch, also sound very good. The jazz/soul music shaped finisher „Big City Life“ is completely out of line in terms of style, even if Moni Francis, known from TV, cinema and cabaret appearances, can present her multi-faceted voice here. Still, the song seems like a foreign body that leaves me shrugging. With solid compositions and dense orchestration, „Atmosphere“ definitely knows how to please, even if no milestone of the genre has been created. There are surely plus points for the two new singers, who cover the vocal spectrum professionally and with commitment. Kristina Jülich’s violin also produces a special flair. Unfortunately, there are a few songs that I like less, but this may also have something to do with my own expectations as soon as it gets to symphonic metal. Anyway: Some really awesome tracks and the ladies’ strong vocals easily tear it out.
