Vengeance is a metal band from the Netherlands formed in 1983.Arjen Anthony Lucassen, the head of Ayreon and other progressive metal projects, played in the band from its formation until 1992, when he left to pursue a solo career.Their guitarist, Jan Somers, who was born on 28 December 1964, died on 28 January 2011 in Mierlo, Netherlands, from a heart attack. He was 46 years old.Brimming with confidence and justifiable pride Dutch rock band Vengeance have announced the release of their latest album PIECE OF CAKE: “People can expect what to my ears is the best Vengeance album to this date,” declares guitarist Timo Somers, “the songs are a nice blend of old school Vengeance (think Arabia) and some more modern sounding songs. This time the instrumental side of the band is really outspoken, it features a lot of nice intros, solos and instrumental pieces. And to top it off, Leon sounds better than ever.”It’s a full thirty years ago that Leon Goewie founded the Dutch rock band Vengeance in the early 1980s; thirty years in which the band went through variably successful times and which had Goewie himself experience the usual highs and lows of life as a musician. Yet: he never lost his inherent optimism nor his basic enthusiasm for Vengeance.At the same time Goewie, whose uniquely expressive voice can be picked out among thousands, cannot deny that his band has developed: “After thirty years in this business, you should mature at least a little,” he grins knowingly, “so in that respect PIECE OF CAKE is slightly more serious than most of our previous releases – but of course only to an extent where we don’t miss out on the fun of it all.” The new album will be out on 28 October2013 on Steamhammer/SPV.Goewie talks about a recording which, in his opinion, is the most professional he’s ever cut with Vengeance.. No doubt about it: PIECE OF CAKE forges an arch between the group’s glorious past – documented by the return of the legendary band logo from the cult recordings We Have Ways To Make You Rock , Take It Or Leave It and Crystal Eye and their future-oriented present.The album’s sensational cast is just as spectacular as the new material: alongside original vocalist Leon Goewie, PIECE OF CAKE features drummer John Emmen (JEB), guitarist Timo Somers (Delain), and bassist Barend Courbois. “More than ever before, this is a band which consists of friends,” comments Goewie. And Vengeance are eager to rock their audience as soon as possible: an extensive tour has been scheduled for spring 2014, only a few weeks after the release of their album. VENGEANCE is one of the finest and most underrated hard rocking bands ever. Hailing from the Netherlands, the outfit was the vehicle for Arjen Lucassen to become famous before went solo with Ayreon.Thir final album with Lucassen inthe ranks is 1989’s “Arabia“, perhaps VENGEANCE’s best and their most successful. “Arabia” is a fantastic, superb slice of late ’80s polished Hard Rock with a crystal clear production courtesy of John Sonneveld. Think TNT’s Intuition, the first House Of Lords, Doug Aldrich’s Lion, Hurricane’s Slave To The Thrill… that crisp and powerful sound.But a year before, VENGEANCE already taped the pre-production demos for the album after intense rehearsals. These takes have an exceptional energy, rough diamonds with a quite different approach than the polished result heard in the final, official recording – but production, mix and sound quality are excellent.That’s why when “Arabia” was reissued / remastered, this great 2-CD package was prepared including on a bonus disc thes terrific early recordings, including a previously unreleased track.”Arabia ’89 [2xCD Limited Edition remastered]” is a killer package from a band you need to hear if you like ’80s hard rock with melody and punch.The reactions from the European rock press to ”Arabia” were enthusiastic. The album wad presented on Aardschokdag, a festival organised by the rock magazine of that same name. That summer the band is also to be seen at the Parkpop festival at The Hague, one of the biggest pop festivals in Europe.Again they tour Germany a lot. Switzerland too is included in the tour schedule, and they also give a concert in London in the legendary club The Marquee. There is also a growing interest from Japan.However, a tour in Germany in 1989, together with BONFIRE, turns out to be the beginning of the end, which, for that matter, doesn’t come about until 1992.From a commercial point of view the band is doing well. As always they drew capacity crowds, major record companies were knocking on their door and the management of IRON MAIDEN showed a serious interest in VENGEANCE.“During that tour in Germany friction arose among the band members,” according to Arjen Lucassen. “This led to the sacking of Leon Goewie.” He is replaced by the Englishman lan Parry. A new contract was not on and also the interest in VENGEANCE from abroad is rapidly on the wane.With Parry as a frontman VENGEANCE starts on a farewell tour in 1992, choosing as its motto When The Last Teardrop Falls. The end of VENGEANCE was premature and left a gap in the Dutch music scene.Nevertheless the story though many years later – fortunately continued where it had left off.In 1997 VENGEANGE made an appearance again with the cast Goewie, Somers and Verschuren, complemented with Barend Courbois (bass guitar), Roland Bakker (keyboards) and Paul Thissen (drums). Live the band proves it has lost nothing of its former lustre, whereas Arjen Lucassen composes the bulk of the excellent come-back album Back From Flight 19.
