US melodic hard rock / AOR band from Cleveland, Ohio, active in the 1980s.Champion’s only release was Halfway To Heaven plus 1986 2 tracks single "Just Another Day".The album "Halfway To Heaven" was co-produced by the band’s guitarist and vocalist John Norman and the Outlaws’ guitarist Freddie Salem. Although it didn’t make a big impact on the charts, the band still accomplished more than most bands ever do. Forming in the early 1980s, shortly after the members’ graduations from high school, the band committed itself totally to music, forgoing outside jobs. It built an extensive playing circuit that soon took it far beyond the Cleveland area and made it self-supporting and self-contained, toting a full PA and light show. The band also financed its own recording sessions. In 2008, this one-off album was reissued by Retrospect Records.

Nice to finally see this obscure AOR gem on CD.Ohio-based AOR band Champion had an epic album "Halfway To Heaven" in 1988. Musically, the songs by Champion are decent and laid-back, featuring nice harmonies and bright keys.Their songs more or less reminds me of the 1980s works by Canadian band Partland Brothers."Halfway To Heaven" is IMO one of the best AOR songs of the late 80's and production is first-rate, even though this was released on a small indie label back in '87. If you like bands like Avion, The Windows or just good AOR/Melodic Rock in general, this is an essential purchase.Highly recommended indeed.
