Bio:
Tarja Turunen is a Finnish lyric soprano singer, songwriter and composer. She is best known as the original member and the former lead vocalist of Finnish operatic/symphonic power metal band Nightwish, founded by herself, Tuomas Holopainen and Emppu Vuorinen in 1996. She was dismissed from the band after nine years, on October 22, 2005, through an open letter written by Holopainen, that was signed by the other members of Nightwish too. Turunen responded through another open letter, which was posted on her website in both Finnish and English. The journey has just begun...
Album:
‘The Shadow Shows’ tour was very impressive, taking in some 200 shows over 40 countries and enjoyed by huge numbers of people, and now here it is recorded for those to re-live or just enjoy for the first time.Act II is the combination of high quality live shows recordings in London and Milan, you can hear the audience, but not at the expense of what is produced on stage to the point that it is easy to forget that you are listening to a live album until the applause at the end of the tracks.Tarja produces a set full of Operatic Metal, with the backing of face melting guitars, heavy drums and the overall sound of a Heavy Rock band, contrasted by the beautiful vocal provided by the Finnish front. The soprano singer has the vocal power to not just match that of the instruments behind, she easily over powers that produced by the band and enchants the listeners with her precision and pitch.Songs like ‘Shameless’ display the differing styles that the vocal range fit nicely into, providing a more traditional vocal during the verses, then bursting into the powerful, enchanting narration, whilst ‘Calling From The Wild’ begins as a slow, atmospheric number, before the guitars shatter the ambience and the power takes over again followed later by ‘Supremacy’ which is an absolute beast, with heavy riffs, hooks and a darker overall sound. Act II takes a turn to an acoustic, slower pace for 5 songs as a medley is played with perfection, beauty and raw passion. The silence from the audience is deafening as they are caught under the spell beingcast in front of them. The 20 tracks on this release are the prime example of how different backgrounds and styles can combine and work in perfect harmony, to produce an engaging, theatrical sound, that transforms to the live stage seamlessly to provide a special experience, one that if you couldn’t be there, listening to this is the next best thing. In fact, close your eyes and you could easily be down the front taking it all in.Act II is not just a live album, it is a live performance of something very special. The emotion, mood and passion is shared from the stage to ears so be prepared to be moved, empowered and bewitched by Tarja.
