Bio:

Judas Priest are an English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, England in 1969.Known for twin lead guitars, a wide operatic vocal style, and for introducing the S&M leather-and-studs look into heavy metal, they have sold over 50 million albums worldwide. The band is widely recognised as one of the finest and most original heavy metal bands of all time, with many artists within the genre having cited them as a major influence.MTV ranked them the second "Greatest Metal Band" of all time.Despite an innovative and pioneering body of work in the late 1970s, the band struggled with indifferently-produced records, repeated changes at the drummer position, and a lack of major commercial success or attention until 1980 when they adopted a more simplified sound on the album British Steel, which helped shoot them to rock superstar status. In 1989, they were named as defendants in an unsuccessful lawsuit alleging that subliminal messages on their albums had caused the suicide attempts of two young men.The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s, and the temporary departure of singer Rob Halford in the early 1990s. The current line-up consists of lead vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance featuring their most commercially successful line-up, featuring Halford, Tipton, Hill, K. K. Downing (guitar), and Dave Holland (drums). They were a major influence on multiple genres of metal, including but not limited to power metal and thrash metal.Their influence, while mainly Rob Halford's operatic vocal style (widely considered as one of the most unique vocalists in the genre) and the twin guitar sound of K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, has been adopted by many bands. Their image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s.Their 1980 album, British Steel, has been referred to as the "record that, more than any other, codified what we mean by "heavy metal".Despite a decline in exposure during the mid 1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2005, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series.Redeemer of Souls is the upcoming seventeenth studio album by heavy metal band Judas Priest, set to be released on 14 July 2014. It is their first album in 6 years (their previous album being 2008's Nostradamus) and also their first without founding guitarist K.K. Downing, who left the band in 2011 and was replaced by new guitarist Richie Faulkner. On 27 January 2011, it was announced that Judas Priest was in the process of writing new material for what was thought to be the group's final album due to their previously announced farewell tour entitled the Epitaph World Tour, but the band clarified that the Epitaph tour was "by no means the end of the band".Speaking at a press conference in Los Angeles on May, 26, of the new material Glenn Tipton said: "It's quite a mixed bag. Really, there's more sentiment on this album. In a way, I suppose, it's also our farewell album, although it might not be our last one. There are some anthems on there, which pay tribute to our fans"Guitarist Glenn Tipton said that fans should not expect wild experimentation. "Sometimes in the past we may have come under fire for being too adventurous musically – so we have listened," he said. "From start to finish, 'Redeemer of Souls' is 18 songs of pure classic PRIEST metal."When asked why the bonus tracks are only included in the deluxe edition of the album and not in the standard release, Tipton explains:"They are all great songs," he says. "The reason they are not on the album is because the 13 that we chose are very consistent with what we wanted to do, which was release an undisputable heavy metal album. The others, they are not lightweight by any chance, but they've got a different feel, a different texture."So it's not a case of trying to rip the kids off and trying to get more money for an extra album, it's just a case of, these five tracks seem to deserve to go on their own CD, and that's what we did."

Album:

"Firepower" is the upcoming 18th studio album by British heavy metal band Judas Priest. The album is expected to be released in March 2018 and will be supported with a North American tour. It is the first studio album since 1988's "Ram It Down" to be produced by Tom Allom and the first one with Andy Sneap as co-producer.As a lifelong Judas Priest fanatic, nothing gets my blood flowing more than new music from the greatest heavy metal band to ever grace this planet. While my expectations were raised considerably with the online release of the title track, ‘Firepower’ and “Lightning Strike”, I was pretty downcast to find that the rest of the album didn’t quite match those lofty heights. While ‘Firepower’ gets off to a suitably fiery start with the one-two punch of the aforementioned tracks, the pace drops significantly soon after. The rest of the album moves squarely into Fight and Halford territory with very little resembling vintage Judas Priest. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the bloated nature of many of the following tracks makes for a fairly tedious listen. However, there are a couple of crackers to be found, especially towards the album’s latter half. “Spectre”, for example, sees Halford in especially fine form as his venomous vocal delivery perfectly complements the sinister vibe the song exudes. Similarly, “Never Surrender”, which sounds like it was plucked from ‘Point of Entry’ and injected with a beefier production job, also manages to bring the heat. It’s clear that Halford runs the show all throughout ‘Firepower’ by favoring his still excellent mid-range. This is easily the best he’s sounded since ‘Angel of Retribution’, although the material behind him doesn’t quite match those standards.Unfortunately, the same issues that plagued Redeemer of Souls seem to be present here as well. While Firepower on the whole is a bit of a step up, at least in my opinion, it’s still a very uneven album. The strong tracks like the title song, Lightning Strike, Spectre, Never Surrender and Lone Wolf are noticeably a cut above the rest. The ponderous and almost lethargic nature of “Children of the Sun”, “Rising From Ruins”, “Sea of Red” etc. tends to rob ‘Firepower’ of much of its, well firepower. In a textbook case of ‘sometimes less is more’, whittling the album down to a solid 8 songs could have certainly given it more oomph. Even the muscular, modernised production, which seems to be Andy Sneap’s calling card, doesn’t really cut it. It worked for Accept to some extent, but Priest has always been a more dynamic band that needs room to breathe. As much as it pains me to say it, this isn’t Judas Priest at their best. ‘Firepower’ would probably fit snugly somewhere in between Halford’s ‘Crucible’ and Fight’s ‘War of Words’, but without the staying power of the latter. But hey, I’m just glad they’re still around. After all, the metal world would be a poorer place without Judas Priest at the helm. And with Tipton sadly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, there’s a good chance this could be their swansong. In any case, their status as bonafide metal legends will never be in question and hopefully they still have one more album in them to go out on a fitting high.
