Bio:

Waterland emerged in 2007 as a project created by the guitar player from the now extinguished band Oratory, Miguel Gomes. Waterland had the collaboration of the singers Marco Alves (vocals) ex-Oratory and Bruno Gomes (vocals). The promo CD, self-titled WATERLAND, features 15 songs of heavy metal, each one of them a part of the story of Waterland. Waterland participated in HELL ON FIRE “30 bandas Unleashed vol1” and “CIRCULO DE FOGO – 7# Livre”. In 2008 the band recorded “VIRTUAL TIME”, as the second chapter of the saga. Tó Silva joined the band in 2009 in time to participate in the recording of this album. Waterland had also the collaboration of Manuel Melo from radio show “Sinfonias de Aço” in all narrations. In June 2010 the video clip for the song "Destiny II" was recorded. In Setember the second video clip, featuring the song "Queen of Light", came to life. Tiago Moreira (Drums) and Tiago Alexandre (Bass) joined the band during this period. Belisa Campinho joined the band to fill in for vocals in March 2011. This year sets the landmark for the first live appearance of Waterland in Barcelos and in September the band performed at the “Festival Malhão” and "Gaia em Peso". In 2012 the band started recording the new album which is now finished and in production. Paulo Pires who starred as a guest act in the recording of this new recording became a full time member in July 2013.Meanwhile Tiago Alexandre departed the band, and the new Bass player are Ivan Batista.

Album:

Stories from the land of water.WATERLAND, who come from Portugal, have certainly not covered themselves with fame with their previous discography. Be it the 2008 demo WATERLAND (Review) or the first album VIRTUAL TIME (Review), which was also released completely independently - the two-part lead vocals were soporific, the lyrics downright ridiculous, the melodies much too kitschy, the handling of the instruments amateurish , the production bad. In general, what was on offer was more in the realm of shallow electro-pop than in the field of heavy metal. This rightly led to some correspondingly damning reviews - and to a strange shadowy existence for the band. But in 2015 everything should be completely different ...At least one prepared accordingly this time - also with an apparently urgently needed lineup change. Marco Alves (ex-ORATORY), for example, was just a shadow of himself as a WATERLAND singer - which was also true for all other singers who were involved in the meantime, such as Bruno Gomes, Paulo Loureiro or Sofia Alexandra. From 2011 to 2014 they even hired another unknown named Belisa Campinho ... so that today we can assume five former WATERLAND singers, which is rather thought-provoking and reminds of the initial confusion at CARDIANT. So it will stay exciting - because it is uncertain whether Paulo Pires, who joined in 2013, and Miriam Dias, who was recruited in 2014, will actually stay with the band longer. After all, they are now represented on OUR NATION - and do significantly better than their predecessors. But it remains to be seen whether this will actually have a major impact on the WATERLAND sound. Because: WATERLAND still have to struggle with striking problems, which is already noticeable in the opener DESTINY III (which is better than the two predecessors) or the sequel FIRE BURNING. And not too close - and despite the fact that the beginning of the number comes along quite strong and with the thrown in growls exudes a breath of fresh air. But what follows afterwards is like a tragedy: again it is the same, lamenting chants that dominate the sound. The fact is that no other Power Metal band sounds so powerless and therefore insignificant - apparently, despite the years between the releases and the new lineup, nothing has happened to the most striking problem areas of the band. Fortunately, in terms of instruments, it doesn't look that wild anymore - but the same applies here: others do it much better. So OUR NATION is not much more than to score points with an already controversial direction of the genre: a quitsch-jolly Happy Metal from the brand FREEDOM CALL meets DREAMTALE. With the small but subtle difference that WATERLAND do not understand their craft perfectly and there is always a risk of falling into a certain ridiculousness. And so follows what has to follow: a number like OUR NATION loses its charm after the first colorful minute at the latest, DREAMS WE LOST seems to consist of just one (and not at all good) chorus, with which ANOTHER STAR seems to be booming trying to build a bridge to ORATORY's LIFE IN ANOTHER STAR - which also fails. Because there is another interesting factor: the further the album progresses, the harder the keyboard use becomes. But that's what Tó Silva (also ex-ORATORY) presents here; unfortunately not particularly down-to-earth or atmospheric. At least his solos are acceptable - but they are not much more than a drop in the ocean. How macabre WATERLAND's lead vocals actually are can be heard at the latest in a quasi-ballad like ROOM 45 - which also comes along with a strangely pounding drumming part. Or in SECRETS OF MIND, in which the feeble front voices are thrown a few growls. Or in the ballad LAND OF DREAMS, which is hard to beat in terms of embarrassment. Or…After all: DEMONS EYES as the first number on the album sounds like a halfway decent title. A full and variable drumming part, nice rugged guitars including a good solo and a somewhat dark atmosphere give an indication of how WATERLAND could sound; if only they wanted to. But here, too, the following applies: the lead vocals cut off mercilessly poorly in comparison to the quite fitting growls. What follows after such a comparatively solid number, however, was also foreseeable: even more of what the album had to offer up to then. Everywhere it rains pop-looking refrains that, if they weren't presented so powerlessly, might encourage you to sing along; on every corner there are cheesy keyboard elements and a lot more unimportant chants. A number like BACK TO BEGINNING might even be fun - it would be called
