Bio:

Númenor has risen from the ashes of band Esgaroth. The only remaining member from the embryonic period was Despot (Marko Miranovic).Despot established Númenor in 2009 and marked the path with the new members, but, anyhow some of the older material, from the previous periods left, and later was published on various EPs.The lyrics are based on fantasy literature: J.J.R. Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Robert E.Howard.Discography:2013 Colossal Darkness Full-length

Album:

Many tried to bring the Tolkienian and other various fantasy realms into reality with their audio and only a few have succeeded in doing so. Those who have finished such a quest and claimed their spoils include SUMMONING, CALADAN BROOD, and BAL-SAGOTH. Others tried to reach their height of success and only ended up being left out and average at best. It saddens me to include NUMENOR in that category, due to the fact that their cheesy titled new LP “Sword & Sorcery” brings nothing interesting to the table, but instead, serves as a catalyst to feed the particular niche of Epic Metal fans with filler for something better to come their way.Epic (Black) Metal is a genre not everyone is able to replicate or be very inventive about, and because this release is everything but inventive, I’ll start with the negatives. A fantasy metal album, supposedly Tolkien influenced spans 34 minutes? And with short mediocre at best lyrics? What am I supposed to make of this? SUMMONING’s recent “Old Mornings Dawn” spanned an hour and a few minutes and BAL-SAGOTH’s least lengthy release spans an average of 50 minutes, which is still considered short for such a genre. Moreover, this release felt like I’m listening to a HAMMERFALL record with guest features from Black Metal artists. To add on top of that, till the 9th track on this record, the tracks were short and the only fantasy element I was able to grasp was the stellar flawless symphonic compositions. The guitars have nothing outstanding to them and the vocals couldn’t get my attention due to the flawed formula throughout the entire record.I’ll admit “Dragonheart” had more potential and with deeper lyricism, better guitars and more narration could have been a fan favorite. The last two tracks “Bane of Durin” and “Sleeping Sorceress” displayed musical prowess and stand out in their length and slightly better song structure. Still however, nothing out of the ordinary is showcased throughout the entire album except the seriously exceptional symphonic compositions. Remove the keyboards and this is nothing but a cheesy power metal album with some black metal vocals thrown in the mix.“Sword & Sorcery” is by no means a great record, but it serves its purpose as entertaining filler for the multitude of listeners in the genre that are anticipating something bigger. The whole blend however, doesn’t induce the ecstasy you’d expect from the Epic Metal genre. This release is recommended for the dedicated fan base that wouldn’t mind a compilation of BLIND GUARDIAN with a little dash of SUMMONING.

Album:

When you have to deal with Power Metal, you must remember that this term covers a vast range of musical works. What I mean: it’s not easy to describe all the ideas that this genre can conceive. Then, the better is to hear the music and throw aside the labels, and in this way, you’ll have the pleasure to hear “Chronicles from the Realms Beyond”, the third album from Serbian band NÚMENOR.They use a different approach, because we could describe the band in a first impression, it would be as a Melodic Epic Power Metal, but soon you’ll hear some extreme Metal parts arise on some songs, as well as some harsh vocals. The final vision is of a band that mixes Black/Death Metal elements with Epic Power Metal, and it’s truly fine, because this fusion creates something really aggressive, but filled with excellent melodies and keyboards’ parts, along with great riffs, thundering bass guitar and drums, and the mix between clean and nasty vocals. It’s really different, amazing and good! The sound quality of the album is good. It’s clear in a way that allows the fans to understand what they are playing, and what they are up to. But it’s a bit rawer than the necessary in some parts, giving the feeling that there is a “smoke curtain”. Their work deserves a more clean orientation that keeps the aggressiveness of their extreme elements. It’s not perfect, but good. Using this mix, maybe some bands could lose the way, but NÚMENOR is a veteran with more than 10 years of experience on their shoulders (counting the name that they used a different name) and three albums (and a lot of EPs, Singles and Split albums). So be prepared, because “Chronicles from the Realms Beyond” will conquer more fans, even you.On the fast and melodic “Heart of Steel” (very good melodic keyboards parts and clean vocals) and on “Carvenstone” (that shows a very good work from guitars), you’ll think that they are an Epic/Power Metal band, but the sinuous and aggressive “Witching Hour” (filled with aggressive vocals and great melodies on guitars) shows that they have a Death/Black Metal side as well. On the climatic and filled with tender parts “Beyond the Doors of the Night” (what a fine guitar solo!) and the epic melodies of “Moria” (what a lovely vocal duets between female voices with grim and clean male voices) both sides of their musical work are on equilibrium. On “Over the Mountains Cold”, the both sides of their music are balanced, with some nasty guitars and heavy rhythmic work. “Realms Beyond” is an epic intro that prepares the fan for “The Last of the Dragonlords”, another song with an orientation to their epic side (when the extreme elements are just on the nasty aggressive vocals). “Valhalla” is an old classic from BLIND GUARDIAN, that here is presented in an aggressive version, but with the band showing their own personality on the song (even some extreme grunts can be heard on it). These are their best moments. The band is really talented, and can be pointed as a great revelation in the scene. Just listen to “Chronicles from the Realms Beyond”, open your hearts and ears, and maybe a new page in Metal history will be revealed.

Album:

Not bad what the Serbs around singer Despot Marko Miranović are serving us here. Already the first track of the long player, Make The Stand, refers to the musical journey this long player wants to take us with. Here none other than Hansi Kürsch has a duel with Marko. Blind Guardian meets Death Metal vocals. A very coherent song that goes straight into your ears and neck. With Númenor, the next track, Marko shows that he is also good at clear vocals. The guitars gallop in the best Iron Maiden manner, while the vocals can be found here in Power Metal.Hall Of The Mountain King, is supposed to be a homage to Savatage. The Death Metal vocals take a bit of getting used to here and for me they are the weakest number on the album.Feanor is again an original composition, like Númenor with galloping guitars and clear vocals, but spiced with growls. The nerds among us now know where the band get their text inspiration: from J.R.R. Tolkien. An almost inexhaustible source, and always suitae for the genre. By the way, the cover of this album is by Dobroslav Bob Zivkovic, which also graced the Lord of the Rings edition in Serbia from 1984.It continues with Mirror Mirror, not a Blind Guardian Cover Version, as you might think, but its own number. This is reminiscent of Ensiferum in terms of structure and singing and shows the versatility of Númenor. At Arkenstone it gets a little nastier with the growls, again mixed with clear vocals in the vocals, which also suits the band very well.Where Battles Rages On is a thoroughbred Melodic Death Metal number that, like the rest of the album, is fun.Twilight Of The Gods hits the mark, just a little harder and faster. The Day Of The Final Frost goes well with the current weather conditions, frosty and nasty is nasty here and there through the song and adds a shovel degree of hardness. I like it very much too.The Last Of The Wizards, the last song on Númenor, is another number with piano and Gothic-like deep spoken vocals that seems a bit confusing to me and doesn't quite fit in with the rest. Not a good graduation, but you can't have everything.
