Bio:

AETERNITAS was founded in 1999 by Anja and Alexander Hunzinger and in August 2000 released their first and very well-received concept album "requiem", combining a variety of different stylistic devices (from classical to metal elements) and including Latin texts. The success of the album encouraged Anja and Alexander to build a live band, and during the following gigs AETERNITAS offered a very special show, bringing to life the contents of the songs on stage.AETERNITAS 2004The second album "La Danse Macabre", released in 2004, joined contemporary Gothic Metal with classical, electronic and theatrical influences. The sound thereby evolved into an innovative symbiosis of dark melancholic Gothic Theatre Metal. The concept of stage realization was developed for spectators to enjoy a theatrical Gothic live show where the actors took the audience into the world of the Danse Macabre (among others at the Wave & Gotik Treffen (WGT), Leipzig 2005).These two concept albums paved the way for the subsequent development of AETERNITAS and their next work, the Gothic Musical "Rappacinis Tochter" ("Rappaccini's Daughter").AETERNITAS 2009The piece is based on the short story of American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, a contemporary and companion of Edgar Allan Poe. Painstaking work from 2005 saw music, texts and dialogues written under the auspices of director Sandra M. Heinzelmann and arranger Tillmann Kracke. By May 2007 the stage was coming together and in January 2008 the show opened with great success in Hamburg. This was AETERNITAS’ gift to the Gothic and Metal Scene, and to the musical-inclined public of Germany: its GOTHIC MUSICAL. "Rappacinis Tochter" has gone on to be performed live on stage more than 50 times between 2008 and 2011 (e.g. four times at the WGT 2009 ) and the album "Rappacinis Tochter - Highlights" received the Best Musical Album Award at the German Rock and Pop Prize 2008.Since 2011 AETERNITAS have been working on their new concept album "House of Usher", based on the famous short story of Edgar Allan Poe, "The Fall of the House of Usher". For this new album AETERNITAS are developing a modern Symphonic Metal with complex orchestral arrangements, grooving rock parts and the strong and catchy voices of Alma Mathar and Oliver Bandmann. From autumn 2013 onwards AETERNITAS will return to performing live on stage...

Album:

Germans Aeternitas are back with a new album! I was already wondering what is going on with this band, thinking that they disbanded, since they released their previous album, Rappacinis Tochter, back in 2009 which was soon followed by a live DVD with the same name. Then silence, until the words started circulating that they are working on a new thing earlier this year. My first encounter with this band was their second full-lenght named La Danse Macabre, released in 2004. I found it interesting back then because Aeternitas showed a huge potential by combining gothic metal with classical music, modern electronics and made everything so very theatrical. The next album, before mentioned Rappacinis Tochter was more or less a typical gothic metal album, a bit more like a proper gothic musical. Somehow it seems that this band can't really find its own expression as every album showed a different stylistical direction and as well this new offering is not an exception, the only thing that seems to be a constant here is that they always implement the sound with some classical music instruments and using a solid gothic metal background. On House Of Usher Aeternitas went into more or less a typical symphonic metal direction with strong gothic metal and even hard rock influences. This is a concept album, based on the famous short story 'The Fall of he House of Usher' by Edgar Allan Poe. Nothing that original as it has become almost dull because countless bands have already overused the themes from both, Edgar Allan Poe and as well of H.P. Lovecraft, so I think that it's time to finally search for some other artists and thematics, there are many out there. But ok, I can understand why, as those authors offer a wide array of dark/horror themed things that must be very appealing to create such concepts based on their works. Now, Aeternitas on their new album which clocks in around one hour doesn't offer anything really new or groundbreaking, but still this combo which consists of seven talented musicians created an album that is interesting enough to give it some credits. Yes, this is primarly symphonic metal with strong gothic metal influence, you'll hear in there many interesting complex orchestrations that are quite intriguing, compositions are often highly dynamic because of many groovy parts. Everything is centered around both vocalist, the captivating and emotive female vocals of Alma Mathar and nice clean yet strong male vocals by Oliver Bandmann. Some duets are simply breathtaking, romantic and catchy as hell. The compositions are mostly very melodic, the atmosphere is quite haunting, especially when some gloomy keys and choirs come into the picture, like in "Tears" or in "The Fall", but you'll find in here also tracks that have more in common with the legacy of 80s heavy metal or hard rock, like it's the groovy "Roderick" for example. Then I was quite seduced by emotional piano driven popy ballad "Madeline", it has such a catchy refrain, and as well when the band goes darker and heavier, in "Fear" for example, the ambiance becomes very dense because of very rich and intense instrumentation. Here and there you'll have an opportunity to hear some nice guitar leads, while the rhythmic line is keeping the momentum strong and intense throughout the whole album. The duet between Alma and Oliver in one of the albums highlights, rather doomy/sympho/pop piece "Forbidden Love" gives some shivers down the spine, as well in semi acoustic "The Haunted Palace", or in the nicely building up romantic groover "Buried Alive", and absolutely I can't forget to mention the mesmerizing heavy hitting gothic metal piece "Falling Star". Then of course I can't go past well inserted dark electronics and use of classical instrumentation that deepens and implement the atmosphere at certain parts. Actually every single song has something to offer that should lift up the darkened romantic spirit in those who appreciate nicely composed melodic catchy yet haunting symphonic metal with gothy atmospheres and sweet pop accessibility which gives to this album certain replay value. On this new release Aeternitas offers a lot to enjoy for those who like to hear some unpretentious symphonic metal with good vocals and enjoyable instrumentation in the vein of Anette Olzon's solo work, Nightwish, Delain, Xandria, Sirenia, Within Temptation, early Leaves Eyes and similar bands, but unfortunately it still doesn't come forth with anything really breathtaking that should satisfy more demanding listeners. I have also some second thoughts about the production, I don't know if it's just the sound on the promo album, but I think that, if this is what it is, the sound should be more clean, thick and deep to offer a bit more of an intense experience. But still, House Of Usher is a solid album, one of better releases inside this genre released lately and I think that every single fan of aforementioned bands and genres should give it a careful listen.

Album:

German seven piece Aeternitas seems to be in creative bloom right now. I didn't expect that already two years after their previous album, House Of Usher, the band which needed seven long years to release previous album, will be back with a new offering so soon. Even though that they went through a member change behind the microphone, female singer Alma Mathar left the band last year, but soon they found a new one in as well talented vocalist Julia Marou. Aeternitas who formed back in 1999 have since then released (including this one) five full length albums and one live album. If the band until now did four albums which were quite different between each other, it seemed like that they were searching for their own expression, the new album pretty much follows what they did on House Of Usher. Not only musically, also thematically is like the previous one based on stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe. Tales Of The Grotesque could be as well called House Of Usher part two.Aeternitas developed some kind of an intriguing symphonic/gothic metal which is based on strong heavy/gothic metal sound and lush orchestrations. It's not something really alarmingly new or original, but still good enough. Sometimes the thing sounds really bombastic and even though that this album, like I said before is in many ways similar to the previous one, I can also say that it feels more elaborated, it's a bit stronger, powerful and orchestrations are more enhanced. The instrumental side is a bit more dense, richer, maybe a bit catchier, but vocally, especially male vocals are not fitting that well. Don't get me wrong, Oliver Bandmann is a good singer, but his rather theatrical German accent doesn't go that well together with Julia's amazing emotive and strong voice, a good example is the song "The Bells", which would be way better without male vocals. On the other hand there are parts where the two singers perform some astonishing duets, like for example in most of the emotional semi-ballad "Annabel Lee". I aplaud also use of some death growls in certain tiny parts like for example in the speeding dark tune named "Child Of The Darkness".Tales Of The Grotesque consists of 12 songs that will for sure leave a mark on the symphonic metal spectrum, especially the powerful groovy ones like is the opener "The Tell-Tale Heart", the dynamic driver "Experiment" or the bombastic "Deus Ex Machina". The compositions are often pretty theatrical and thanks to well inserted orchestrations also atmospheric. The rhythmic line is constantly very powerful and guitar riffs are overwhelming, with some tasteful additional leads for musical gourmets. All of the songs are constantly melodic with necessary pretty catchy refrains and truly captivating parts, just listen to the evocative "Eleonora" and you'll get my point. As well the addition of some electronic samples, like for example in the last song, "A Case Of Revenge", serves its purpuse to make everything even more interesting and dynamic. Of course Aeternitas couldn't miss to offer us also a piano driven ballad, the thing in which they are really good, they showed this on the previous album with emotionally captivating "Madeline", this time its name is "Eldorado".Aeternitas did another good album, nothing too astonishing, just above average good and it certainly stands out in the ocean of average symphonic/gothic metal albums that are released almost every day. For what concerns the instrumental side I'm more than satisfied with Tales Of The Grotesque, also female vocals are throughout very good, the things that could be better are production, which is rather "dusty", and for this style it should be flawless yet just a bit more powerful, also the mix, especially on vocals could be better, and like I said it before, male vocals should be improved. If they reached even a higher level on instrumental side, they unfortunately made a small step down on vocal side. Nevertheless, if you are into well done female fronted symphonic metal and you like some gothic atmospheres with theatrical insertions than Aeternitas are a thing that you wouldn't dare to miss.

The concept of stage realization was developed for spectators to enjoy a theatrical live show and paved the way for the subsequent development of AETERNITAS and their next work, the concept album ‘Rappacinis Tochter‘ (‘Rappaccini’s Daughter‘).
