Bio:

Freedom Call is a German power metal band formed in 1998.Freedom Call was formed in 1998 by old friends Chris Bay and Daniel Zimmermann during an off-period for the latter's main band, Gamma Ray. They eventually completed a six-song demo Freedom Call with the well-known producer Charlie Bauerfeind, who offered the tape to several record companies. At the same time, the Freedom Call line up was completed by Ilker Ersin on the Bass guitar and Sascha Gerstner on Guitar. Chris and Dan saw Sascha in the beginning of 1998, playing in a cover band. Ilker and Chris had played together in a band called Moon Doc for some years. The debut album, Stairway to Fairyland was released in early 1999, and on 25 May Freedom Call made their official live debut during a France tour as support band of Angra and Edguy. At the end of August Freedom Call started recording the 5-track Mini LP called "Taragon", with new songs, a cover version of Ultravox' "Dancing with tears in my eyes", a new-sung version of the "Stairway to Fairyland" a Japanese bonus track called "Kingdom Come" and a new version of "Tears of Taragon" with Biff Byford, singer of Saxon narrating the "Tale of Taragon" on it.By the end of 1999, Freedom Call had entered the studio again to record the second album called "Crystal Empire", which was released in late 2000.In March 2001 Sascha Gerstner left Freedom Call (he would later join Helloween). He was eventually replaced by Cédric "Cede" Dupont, the Swiss guitarist of Symphorce. In the middle of January 2002 the new formation of the band began recording their new album called "Eternity." Dan and Chris produced the album on their own this time as Charlie Bauerfeind was not available at the time. He was, however, responsible for the drum recordings and the final mix.Later that year, they were invited on tour with Blind Guardian. During this tour they recorded the live album, "Live Invasion" together with Charlie Bauerfeind in Düsseldorf, Stuttgart and Munich. The keyboard player used on this tour, Nils Neumann, was soon invited to become the fifth member of the band. After an extended break, the next album The Circle of Life was recorded at Hansen Studio, Hamburg and FC Studios, Nuremberg from August to October 2004, and released in March 2005.Shortly after the release, both Cédric "Cede" Dupont and Ilker Ersin decided to leave Freedom Call (independently of each other). Replacements were eventually announced in the respective form of the unknown Lars Rettkowitz and Armin Donderer, formerly of Paradox.A new album with the title "Dimensions" was released on 23 April 2007 and, according to Dan Zimmermann, sounds closer to the Eternity album than its more experimental successor. The songs "The Wanderer" and "Dimensions" were also used in the online rhythm game "Flash Flash Revolution"In March 2009, the band announced that they were putting the finishing touches to a new album, "Legend of the Shadowking", and that they had parted ways with bassist Armin Donderer, who would be replaced by Samy Saemann. Also Dan Zimmerman announced that he would be replaced by Klaus Sperling for the 2010 touring cycle as he would be on the road with Gamma Ray during this period. It has later been confirmed on the bands homepage that Zimmermann officially has left the band. He is currently listed as a former member.Chris Bay has announced that the band is working on another album to be released sometime in February 2012. It was announced in September 2011, that the title of the upcoming album is "Land of the Crimson Dawn." The album was released 24 February 2012.The band announced on September 15, 2013 that they are working on a new album, "Beyond", with a new lineup. Ilker Ersin returned to the band to resume Bass duties after some years away and a new drummer has been welcomed, Ramy Ali.A new music video will be filmed on 15 December 2013 for the song "Union of the Strong". The shoot will take place in the vicinity of Nuremberg and Franconia, the song has been taken from the new album "Beyond" that was released on Friday 21 February 2014.

Album:

Beyond is the eighth full-length album by the German power metal band Freedom Call. It was released on February 21, 2014, by SPV.A vinyl version of Beyond was released on March 14, 2014.Beyond received generally very positive reviews upon release, although the majority of these reviews were by genre-related or genre-specific reviewers. Examples of these included: In a 9/10 review for The Metal Observer and commenting on a return to form for Freedom Call, Jonathan Smith wrote: At its inception, this album makes little secret of which creative well it’s drawing from. The first eight songs are all but a perfect mixture of the speed happy character of Eternity meshed with the anthem-driven, catchy fanfare of Crystal Empire. In particular, “Union Of The Strong, “Knights Of Taragon” and “Heart Of A Warrior” all but kick the listener into a fit of déjà vu that recalls how this band’s much lauded third album began. Familiar melodies are reworked a bit and the lead guitar work of Lars Rettkowitz is a bit more mellow and methodical than Sascha Gershow’s technical work, but the speed and majestic consonance of each moment begs for a fist to the sky.In an unscored but favorable review for Metal Injection, Shayne Mathis wrote: ...Freedom Call have consistently released album after album of fun, hyper-melodic power metal that's only gotten better with time, and Beyond may be the band's best album yet. These Germans may not be the most creative or adventurous power metal band out there, but they're definitely one of the most enjoyable. Unless you're a total sourpuss, it's impossible to listen to this album without feeling the urge to smile (or battle a dragon while soaring on the wings of an eagle). He continued: Despite the mammoth running time and rote formula the songs lapse into occasionally, Beyond is still an entertaining record for fans of triumphant metal. This is an album best experienced blasting through car speakers with the windows rolled down on the way to meet your friends for beers and good times. In a 7.5/10 review for Hardrockhaven.net, Justin Gaines wrote: Freedom Call – a.k.a. the happiest power metal band in the universe – are back with a new studio offering...titled Beyond. The long-running German band took a risk with their last album – 2012’s Land of the Crimson Dawn – where they mixed in quirky, Edguy-style rock songs with their usual shiny, happy, power metal. It wasn’t terribly well received, so the band is back on (very) familiar territory with Beyond. If you have at least one older Freedom Call album, you probably know what to expect from Beyond. The band basically takes the Helloween formula and makes it even faster and more melodic. Between Chris Bay’s melodic guitar work and his high-pitched vocals, it’s hard to sit still when a Freedom Call album is playing. Beyond takes the band back to the familiar lyrical territory of warriors, enchanted lands and unity in metal. Yes, it’s cheesy and yes, it’s a little weird to hear battle hymns sung in such a high octave, but it’s so damned hard to resist when these guys get going.Beyond marked the return of founding member, bassist Ilker Ersin, and the addition of Ramy Ali on drums.

Info:

Album:

This summer marks the twentieth anniversary of southern German band Freedom Call and it seems they want to celebrate in the best way by releasing their tenth studio album via Steamhammer/SPV. The band is known for their melodic compositions and their optimistic lyrics, a genre called “Happy Metal”. The new material can’t do differently but follow the tradition that has been created through the years by the German act. The final result is a good vibes record with a variety of musical elements, another proof of their ability to keep their trademark through time. The German team has recently renewed their lineup, with the addition of drummer Timi Breideband and Italian bassist Francesco Ferraro, but the album was recorded with their previous one. The intro track “111” gives the first notes of light and joy to the listener, it symbolizes the number of angels in the Western esotericism. The epic pace of “Spirit Of Daedalus”, “The Ace Of The Unicorn” and “One Step Into Wonderland” keep up the Freedom Call fingerprint bringing the enthusiasm and optimism by the positive lyrics and the fresh melodies. There can be observed some diversities at the title track where the double drumming and the groove style brings up a more original sound in combination with the catchy chorus. Even if the listener could at first have the impression of dealing with the usual happy stuff that is used to by Chris Bay and company, some high-speed power metal songs show that this team is consisted by musicians with technical and performing abilities that can’t be ignored. “Days Of Glory”, “Fly With Us” and “Ronin” are some examples of fast-paced tunes. Moreover, the songs “Wheel Of Time” and “Sole Survivor” give an epic and fantasy style to the record. The most impressive track of “M.E.T.A.L.” can’t be other than the atmospheric “Sail Away” where the powerful melodies in combination with the major vocal abilities of Chris Bay take the whole album to the next level. Although this new record from the German act will not change the history of heavy metal, their mission to create positive energy melodies and to diffuse happiness among the crowd is accomplished. The lyrics of the songs are simple and catchy and this recipe seems to be effective in the last twenty years.Freedom Call is not a band that gets out of common standards of epic power metal, but for sure they are not a group of musicians that should be taken for granted. Every fan of their studio recordings or anyone who has been to a concert of the Germans has noticed that the very first to have fun by playing their music are the band members themselves. The musicians that surround the charismatic frontman Chris Bay show their technical and performing abilities through the eleven new songs of “M.E.T.A.L.”. Don’t miss the opportunity to attend one of their shows, entertainment is guaranteed!

Album:

If a survey was commissioned to find out which shows audiences are at their most boisterous, FREEDOM CALL would definitely be among the leading acts. The German leaders of “Happy Metal” surrounding frontman and founder Chris Bay, regularly leaves audiences euphoric in its the wake, carried away by the band’s catchy songs and inspiring stage performance.FREEDOM CALL have earned their large global fan base through sweat and tears, so it seemed logical to document their atmospheric concerts on CD and Blu-ray every now and again to preserve it for eternity. The latest version, ”The M.E.T.A.L. Fest” was recorded at two shows in Pilsen and Regensburg in summer / autumn 2022 and compiled into one diverse concert cut.The release also features a brand-new studio song, the title track “The M.E.T.A.L. Fest“, which heralds in a hot festival summer.

Album:

An album title that fits perfectly in two respects: ‘Silver Romance’ is the name of the latest release by southern German melodic power metal act Freedom Call. The moniker not only stands for the band’s 25th anniversary – referred to by singer/guitarist and band founder Chris Bay tongue-in-cheek as “our silver wedding anniversary” – but also applies to the content of the recording.
