Formed in 2019 in Metz, France, and drawing inspiration from acts such as Queensrÿche, Crimson Glory, Judas Priest, and Symphony X, CRYSTAL THRONE combine classic heavy metal foundations with progressive structures and a strong cinematic identity. Known for their futuristic visual universe, neon aesthetics, smoke effects, and laser-driven live performances, the band continues to carve out their own space within modern progressive heavy metal.Crystal Throne was formed in Metz, in eastern France, on the initiative of guitarist Max Waynn (also known as a videographer on YouTube under the name Max Yme) and singer Terry DeFire.The two musicians then recruited Jefferson Brand on bass and Alex Gricar on drums for the recording of their debut album.Guitarist John L, already well established on the rock/metal scene through his solo project as well as various other ventures – notably his involvement in two EPs with SteeLover alongside the former Scorpions drummer (Rudy Lenners) – also joined the band shortly after its formation; together with Will Ram on drums, he formed part of the line-up that performed the band’s live shows from that time onwards.The band self-produced and released their self-titled debut album, *Crystal Throne*, on 24 November 2021.According to the musicians, much of the songwriting, as well as the initial recordings for the album – notably the vocals and guitar – were carried out in public during live streams on Max Waynn’s YouTube channel.Guitarist NeoGeoFanatic (of the band ADX) features on the track ‘Shades of Existence’, and singer Sonia Anubis (of the bands Crypta and Cobra Spell, and a former member of Burning Witches) features on the track ‘Valkyrie Ride’.The album cover was designed by the illustrator Velio Josto, whilst mixing and mastering were carried out by Claude Hilpert at Dogged Studio.The band released their first music video for the track ‘Steelbirds’, a song which subsequently became one of the most requested tracks by the audience at live shows.The band describe themselves as part of the ‘New Wave of French Heavy Metal’ (echoing the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and bands such as Iron Maiden and Saxon).In 2025–2026, Crystal Throne featured on *Metal Lourd*, billed as the first compilation of this “New Wave of French Heavy Metal”, alongside bands such as Star Rider and Furies, with the previously unreleased track “Rétribution et Châtiment”.To fund their second album, *Chantry of Sacrifice*, the band launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Ulule platform, which raised nearly 26,000 euros, well above the initial target[.This second album, with cover art by illustrator Zsofia Dankova (who has previously worked with Powerwolf and the Michael Schenker Group), is a science-fiction concept album set in the year 5150, centred on the character of Hÿldr, a war veteran facing the disappearance of Earth.Its release is scheduled for 2 October 2026.The line-up officially announced for this release confirms Terry DeFire, Max Waynn, John L, Jefferson Brand and Will Ram.

With no answers and no one left to turn to, Hÿldr is given one final mission. She must journey back through time, uncover what led to humanity’s disappearance, and change the course of events before history reaches an irreversible end.Musically, *Chantry Of Sacrifice* combines the weight and intensity of classic heavy metal with the depth and progression of modern progressive songwriting. The album is designed as a continuous narrative rather than a collection of separate songs, with every track revealing another part of Hÿldr’s story and advancing the larger plot. Soaring melodies, shifting arrangements, powerful riffs, and cinematic textures work together to create a world where the music and narrative are inseparable, turning the album into a complete journey from beginning to end.Release date: Friday, October 2nd 2026.
