Gatekeeper

Jeff Black formed Gatekeeper in the dismal haze of 2010 as a spitting retort to everything happening on a musical level in the frost-kissed prairies of Alberta. In a land dominated by blast beats, scooped mids and vocalists who couldn't find a melody in a shopping bag, Gatekeeper stands upright and unchained, continuing the legacy laid down by such luminaries as Robert E. Howard, Bathory, Frank Frazetta, Manowar, Candlemass and Manilla Road. If your interests lie in the direction of things ancient, lost and far away, Gatekeeper might be for you. If not? Good riddance.

Well, there's a first time for everything, and for me it's writing about a split release. Eternal Champion and Gatekeeper are two killer upcoming bands who teamed up with the equally ace No Remorse Records to give us this release, which is like the perfect marriage of great music and great art.I'll be straight up in saying the Eternal Champion side is my favourite - to near embarrassing fan boy levels, actually - but in all fairness "Retaliator" is a face-ripping USPM number that is hard not to love. Jam-packed with mega riffs, smashing rhythms, mighty lyrics, and Jason Tarpey's finest vocal performance to date; pure 80s epic metal glory. Seriously need a full-length.Gatekeeper gives a bit more in terms of quantity with the deeply evocative "Vigilance" pieces sandwiching the pummeling "Angelus Noctium". One thing I will say is that Gatekeeper just keeps getting better, and here they proudly display their brand of epic metal. Without a doubt pounding, crowned by Shorre McColman's passionate vocals, some seriously cool lead guitar playing, and the best production they've had to date.As a bonus to those who buy on CD, you get a nice amount of extra tracks with Eternal Champion's Last King Of Pictdom demo, and a whole host of sweet demo material from Gatekeeper. So there's plenty to keep you listening, and it adds further longevity. Absolutely recommended, this hasn't really left my playlists since buying. Great stuff!

ETERNAL CHAMPIONS is an Epic Heavy Metal band born in the United States in 2012. In the last five years the band has put out a demo, a single track, and a split album. They are back with their first full-length album “The Armor Of Ire”. The band is inspired the fantasy of Michael Moorcock and savage, pre-Christian war sagas. “The Armor Of Ire” comes in with eight tracks and a listening time of just over 34 minutes.The opening track “I Am Hammer” starts out with a more Atmospheric and Gothic ambiance, but quickly switches gears to a much heavier sound. The vocals kind of remind me of OZZY a little. Come to think of it, the track seems inspired by some old school BLACK SABBATH. This track is hard hitting and almost anthem like. “The Armor Of Ire”, track two, is an Epic all its own. The music tells a story that the vocals only enhance. The guitar riffs are killer and the drums keep everything inline. The elements that this track is filled with give the listener an array of feelings and energy, but they still allow them to find their own as well. This is an Epic Metal track, in every sense of the word.Track four, “Blood Ice”, is a two-minute interlude. It’s unusual for most but not for what this album holds.There is a grandiose guitar solo at the end of this instrumental that really heightens the energy, but the drum and heavy energy is what makes this little break phenomenal. It’s a reminder of the workings of down in the pits.“The Cold Sword”, track five, pulls us right out of that pit with the energy of the battle. The feeling is quick, hard, ready to die, and winning. The guitars and drums keep the track speeding along and the vocals are intertwined within this track making them an integral part of the sound, not just for the lyrics. This track is excellent at pointing out.The final track, “Shade Gate” starts off again with a more atmospheric feel, but still holding with their Epic Heavy background. The riffs make this track feel like the end is here, but the story is not over. There is more to be told in this saga and more battles to be had. The small spoken piece gives live to this thought. ETERNAL CHAMPION’s “The Armor Of Ire” is an epic adventure in storytelling and music. The vocals are more soothing, but the music will eat you alive. The battles have been won with this album. If you are looking for some Epic Metal with a twist, this album is a great start.

Texan Epic Heavy Metallers ETERNAL CHAMPION are back on their second full length conquest. Out via No Remorse Records on November 20th.Epic soundscapes prepare us for battle before a soaring riffs and drums fire into life with blistering solos, truly capturing the fierce spirit of classic Heavy Metal that is packed with melody and bite. Grooving on, the punchiness of the riffs and beats hits hard as haunting vocals come in to add a chilling cascade over the monolithic instrumental glory. Following the adoration of the last Crypt Sermon and Spirit Adrift albums, it is not a huge leap to assume people are going to absolutely love this new work from Eternal Champion with its eerie melodies and battle-hardened, ravenous rampages. The stream of soloing over the riffs ebbs and flows like a stream of potent shred-craft should while never detracting from the hammering rhythmic sections that hits with the precision and force of Mjölnir. Their last record was a momentous piece of Metal and it is evident from early on that the quality has only grown since.Aside from the abundantly mentioned musical talents of the band, the production is huge-sounding and the victorious, anthemic nature of the music is so easy to be taken in by without feeling too cheesy or juvenile. This is the kind of stuff Manowar, Brocas Helm, Manilla Road, Grand Magus and Nasty Savage would be proud to see still going strong while Eternal Champion feels and sounds like so much more than just nostalgia worship. This is the real deal. Interspersing the charging chariots of riffs and pounding drums are plenty of bloodthirsty howls from the vocalist, Jake, who has such a powerful command of his voice, entwining with ferociously tight guitar solos to concoct a masterful sound of pure steel Heavy Metal craftsmanship. This is the kind of music that will transport you to another universe of immortal warriors, valkyries and dragons, while never feeling insincere. That is a tricky balance but Eternal Champion have nailed it once again.Galloping bass and drums ride onwards to the horizon as more enchanting choruses and anthemic lead work soars in the sunset, leaving us on the battlefield ready to play the record again, which I certainly will be. This may be easy to get into, it’s too damned catchy not to love, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a simple album. There is so much nuance between the fretwork and drum fills that back up a hugely diverse vocal performance that even on the 10th play-through you will find a lot of new details that remain undiscovered like a forgotten crypt of riffs. A good Metal record, regardless of genre, will always reward those who come back and that certainly rings true for this slab of sword skirmishes and tales from a mystical land. The potency of the sound follows their glorious last record and gives us another 8 chapters to indulge ourselves with as the glorious tale further unfurls. Be aware, fists will be pumping and you will be singing these tomes of doom in no time, ready for the next instalment whenever that may be…Glorious songwriting, magnificent musicianship and a crushing execution from Eternal Champion will entice all to hear their call to arms. A blistering opus of pure Heavy Metal cannonade that never ceases to scold us with its luminescent excellence. Heed this article, seize your steel and bellow your heart out to this majestic recording of pure sonic fire as the battalions charge forth.
