Bio:

Crystallion is a German heavy/power metal band founded in 2003 by bassist Stefan Gimpl and drummer Martin Herzinger. The first album A Dark Enchanted Crystal Night came out in 2006 and was well received by fans and media.Crystallion was founded in 2003 by bassist Stefan Gimpl and drummer Martin Herzinger to combine their musical passion with their interest in history. The band was influenced by bands like Rhapsody of Fire, Stratovarius, Helloween and Sonata Arctica. Powerful riffs and hook-lines team up with finely crafted songwriting and brilliant melodies, but their most significant mark is singer Thomas Strübler's multi-octave voice which is dividing the band from their likes. The first album A Dark Enchanted Crystal Night came out in 2006 and was well received by fans and media. Germany's Rock Hard gave 8/10 points and quoted: "From songs to production to the cover everything fits here. A very well done debut for a young and promising band!".In May 2008 their second album Hattin - recorded at Helion Media Studios in Munich - was released on Dockyard 1 and the reception by fans and media was enthusiastic again. After a small release tour for the album in June 2008 and a number of gigs throughout Germany (and neighbouring Austria) guitarist Flo decided to leave the band by the end of what was to become the most successful year of the band's career until then. Since then the band has played with one guitar only, leaving more room for the creativity of keyboardist Manuel Schallinger and guitarist Patrick Juhasz. On their third album Hundred Days Crystallion refines their style by adding a bit more Hard-Rock-oriented songwriting to their doublebass dominated melodic speed metal, complementing the band's original trademarks with a slightly rougher edge. Concept-wise, the album's focus lies on the hundred days of Napoleon Bonaparte's return from his first exile on the island of Elba.Back in power, he once more tries to conquer large parts of Europe until he is finally beaten in the Battle of Waterloo and sent into exile to the remote island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. "Hundred Days" was released in November 2009.On 19 March 2012 the band announced on their official page that Manuel Schallinger has left "for professional reasons" and they will continue without keyboards for now.Late 2016 the band announced the new album title on their Facebook page: At the moment we're still in the writing and arranging process of about 10 new songs. We are working (again) on a concept album that covers some persons and events of the Bavarian history. The album title is "Bavarian Cutome Made".We cannot wait entering the studio and recording the best heavy stuff we've written for years...!On 1 May 2019 Crystallion announced on Facebook that Thomas Stübler will leave the band after 15 years for personal reasons. The last concert he sang was at the Rock am Ringerl Festival in Teisendorf on 3 May 2019. As new singer, Kristina Berchtold, was announced.Crystallion will release their first album in eight years, Heads or Tails on February 19, 2021 via Pride & Joy Music

Album:

Crystallion have represented everything that one can hope for in a power metal band, employing every effective cliché without simultaneously becoming one themselves. At first glance a shallow observer might conclude that he's dealing with a Freedom Call clone when dealing with a few select songs off their debut, while a fairly different picture emerges on the very different beasts that were "Hattin" and "Hundred Days". It's not so much that this band has been hopping onto different styles that might cause one to mistake them for being 3 different bands with a common vocalist, but more a very unique ability to switch the emphasis so as to avoid any sense of staleness or being contrived while keeping a core sound that ties every album together. Be all this as it may, with the long awaited and independently released 4th album "Killer", this band of melodically obsessed Bavarians have found themselves in fairly different territory, even in comparison to the stylistic distance between former offerings. The best way to sum this album up is as an old school heavy metal album with some occasional power metal revivalist leanings, which is in contrast to "Hattin" with its high speed glory and epic songwriting, and "Hundred Days" with its more compact conceptual storytelling that spoke a little bit more like an Edguy album without the speed metal trappings or slapstick comedy. There are literally times where this album could pass for an early 80s NWOBHM release, particularly of the rocking mold embodied in Def Leppard and Tygers Of Pan Tang. One single listen to the 70s rock intro to "Run" reveals a band that isn't afraid to sound like AC/DC, though they spend a good bit more time in minor keys with soaring melodies that work against the partying, blues based character of said band and a wide number of 80s bands that were influenced by them. Nevertheless, the overriding element that makes this album is its auspiciously constant adherence to mid-tempo rock territory, to the point of purposefully avoiding the speed obsessed character that typified their first 2 albums, along with the bulk of Helloween oriented bands from Germany during the early 2000s that they shared a common style with. For a power metal album that leans a bit towards a rock/AOR sound, this actually also manages to avoid sounding like the sort of Whitesnake meets Judas Priest sound typical to the likes of Masterplan and PowerWorld. Barring the extremely consonant choruses that are just a little too close to Freedom Call, this album could have literally been released in 1982. This isn't hyperbole either, the reverb-drenched and somewhat low-fi analog character of the production screams of early 80s revivalism, outdoing the likes of White Wizzard in capturing the sort of massive concert hall atmosphere that was the staple of said era. A quick listen to rocking cruisers like "Ready To Strike" and "Full Moon Fever" will take one back to the early days of Manowar's "Battle Hymns" meets Saxon's "Denim And Leather". The only thing that's a bit out of character for said era is that vocalist Thomas Strübler has more of a majestic, high flying clean sound that goes against the normally gritty and gravely sleaze that tended to typify that era. The only real low point to speak of is the ballad "Change Your Heart", which has a similarly time appropriate 70s rock character for the era being sought after, but drags on a bit and comes off as sappy next to the melding of crunchy rock riffs and celebratory chorus work that dominates the rest of the album.Perhaps the biggest hurdle that this album has to cross and the one thing that holds it back in relation to its predecessors is the massive change in sound that has come about here. This is definitely still the same band that put out "Hundred Days" and at times you can hear the more epic songwriting in a shorter package on "Far Cry" and "I'm Alive", but all the grand image provoking elements that were on display there (much of it held over from the massive fit of epic storytelling that was "Hattin") is but a passing echo here. This is the sort of album that a true lover of all things 80s outside of the post-Iron Maiden crowd would be more inclined toward, particularly those who loved the early Saxon albums where the metallic elements started creeping in, but before they got fully swept away in the Bon Jovi craze. My preference would be to see these guys return to the retrospective storytelling with fast paced power metal that characterized their 2nd album, but this band could do a lot worse than sticking with this newer sound.

Album:

When dealing with a set of catchy melodies, blended with a very good level of technical work, and a strong sense off aggressiveness, it’s hard to beat German bands. It’s like a tradition for traditional German Heavy Metal to do things in a personal way that always sounds great, new and fresh; and it’s not different with the Bavarian quartet CRYSTALLION. It’s clear when dealing with their latest release, “Heads or Tails”.They create a very good set of catching melodies and catchy choruses, using a good technical level (without exaggerations), and all works great in the hands of their musicians, even dealing with a Metal genre that is already eroded. But how the band breathe a new life in their music in a lovely and wonderful way, plenty of 80’s influences, some touches of German Power Metal, and always being a refreshing experience for the ears.CRYSTALLION produced the album themselves, having the engineering and mix in the hands of Mario Lochet, and the mastering was done by Jan Vacik. All to make their musical work sounds perfect, great, with a very good set of instrumental tunes and a powerful melodic impact. All can be understood without problems. The catchy mix of Heavy Metal weight with charming Hard Rock melodies shown on “Knights and Heroes” (excellent guitars, indeed, and what a remarkable chorus), the powerful and excellent tempos of “Living on a Lie” (bass and drums are working as paving a road with a massive weight), the headbanging songs “Save Me” and “I’m On Fire” (this last one shows some accessible parts), the massive German weighty touch of “Ready for the Sin” and “The King is Rising” are the ones for a first time on the album. But all the songs are able to catch the attention of the listeners in a few seconds.Well, as this is their fifth album, CRYSTALLION shows a lot of experience. And “Heads or Tails” comes to be in the list of the best albums of this year!
