Spirit Invictus storms past the amazing debut that shocked us last year and claims the metal throne. At the same time, it achieves something much more important: Triumpher’s second album, looked into the eyes of the “greats” of epic metal and boldly surpassed them!Not because they don’t respect them, quite the opposite. Triumpher’s influences coming from the heroes of the genre stand proudly in every corner of Spirit Invictus. Triumpher outdid everyone because it was their time to do it and they weren’t afraid to make a strong case about it, just like they do on the charmingly self-referential track “Triumpher” where they over-boldly announce that they’ve come to stay.In only about 40 minutes, they manage to express with their unrestrained epic metal what other bands cannot in dozens of hours of discography. Triumpher don’t chatter and that’s a rarity these days. Spirit Invictus harks back to other times, where metal played fast and sharp, with intensity and passion that swept you into an uplifting daze.The short introduction prepares us for the return of the avenger, i.e. the first single that seems to have come out of the darkest moments of Triumph of Steel and Walls of Jericho. Simply put, dynamic and rough heavy metal with sharp riffs that demand our attention. The intensity with which the Athenians open the record is the most suitable recipe to surprise us with the longest track of the album, a well-structured epic dedicated to the Goddess Athena that builds a dramatic atmosphere, until it explodes in the most melodic way the yell “Athena”. Without catching their breath, Triumpher seem determined to win the game from the first half, as the catchy chorus of Spirit Invictus transports you into a concert moment where the fans will be singing along to the band, word for word.Confidence, courage and a determination to claim greatness illuminate the band’s every step across the eight songs on the new record, which reveals more confidence than Storming the Gates. Mars Triumph, Christopher Tsakiropoulos, Mario Ñ Peters, Agis Tzoukopoulos and Stelios Zoumis have a clearer grip on their music, with tighter, more settled compositions that “speak” clearly to the listener with directness and clarity. The guitar work is amazing, every phrase is perfectly placed, the solos serve the intensity of the songs while the bass sounds clear, giving depth to the compositions in combination with the stormy drum beats.For proof of this, look no further than the pitch-black epic “Alexander” where Mars Triumph gives a stirring performance in honor of the legendary Macedonian conqueror. The dark atmosphere that hints at extreme metal influences is here harmoniously integrated into the epic musical backbone of Triumpher and the result is chilling. The band’s ability to combine melody with a black metal aesthetic and oftentimes riffing is what makes them stand out from the crowd, and on Spirit Invictus they achieve the right balance. “Alexander” is doomed to haunt us from the first listens, it is a menacing song like the two soldier statuses in the album cover.Our tones and pulses must drop in the second half of the record, and “Shores of Marathon” does it brilliantly. Continuing in the same dark style but dropping the speed, the piece evolves into a more atmospheric yet melodic pattern with the use of a perfectly matching recitation. The sequence belongs to the aforementioned “Triumpher” who is not afraid to bring the band’s more mid-tempo rock and roll mood to the arena, only to shout “We Are Triumpher” and get us fired up again, just before the final stretch, which comes to complete the triumph. “Hall of a thousand storms” walks the distance from Into Glory Ride to Hammerheart to capture a temporary ending, with choral vocals softening our soul, discharging the tension.I give you little chance not to press repeat. It’s an addictive record and each listen immerses you more and more in its universe, revealing points that you may have initially skipped over in a hurry. The guys worked on the album a lot and it shows. After all, nothing in this life is a coincidence, if you can put out two such strong albums in one year, then it means you have worked your ass off. Inspiration takes effort.Spirit Invictus is a glorious moment for Triumpher, the Greek scene and Heavy Metal as a whole. It’s already a classic record, destined to find its place among the masterpieces of the past and a strong proof that this music still has a lot to offer.The time of Triumpher has begun.
