Bio:

Slovenian heavy metal band SkyEye was founded in 2014 by guitarist Grega Stalowsky, bassist Primož Lovšin and singer Jan Leščanec. SkyEye got its current line-up in 2016 when guitarist Marko Kavčnik and drummer Jurij Nograšek joined the band. Unique and powerful vocals combined with raw and melodic guitar riffs give the band its signature heavy metal sound, reminescent of other major representatives of the genre, like Iron Maiden, Saxon or Judas Priest. The band made its debut appearance in June 2017, and only four months later brought out its first EP under the title Run for Your Life. The overwhelmingly positive response and strong support at their performances drove the SkyEye back into the studio to record their debut album DIGITAL GOD, which was released on November 9, 2018.

Album:

In the quest to be a global source for all your metal needs, SkyEye hails from Slovenia and has been developing their brand of heavy music since 2014. Previously issuing a debut EP in Run for Your Life last year, they’ve set their sights on a full-length follow up – which we have in the form of Digital God. Not privy to that earlier release, it’s unclear if the band enhanced or modified the EP’s output for the full-length, but there are seven new songs beyond the four previous ones (plus an intro… entitled “Intro”) to make for a solid representation of traditional heavy metal with a large emphasis on soaring melodies and streamlined yet potent musical hooks like many masters from the 80’s.Tight progressive-like maneuvers and guitar/bass syncopation align with Iron Maiden certainly on the epic eight minute-plus “Jerusalem”, while the spacious, infectious riffing and clean, dotted edges to “Fire” seem to push SkyEye into Iron Savior territory if given a bit more of a modern approach. There’s an obvious ability as the record progresses that puts the quintet leagues above other starting bands – be it the thick wall of guitars, magnificent drum kit tones, and the stellar lead vocals that can transform the songwriting into that upper tier you just don’t experience at this level…well, rarely if ever. Evil doom twinges against a Priest-ish riff parade put “Confess Your Sins” near the top picks for headbanging frenzy, conjuring up a bit of Savatage atmosphere say during their Hall of the Mountain King prime. Even though there are three ‘epic’ arrangements of 8-10:30 minutes, the band also inject shorter anthems of a radio-friendly timeframe so as to not overwhelm listeners. If Bruce Dickinson ever needed a doppelganger vocally down the road, he need look no further than Jan Leščanec to not only replicate his range but add a bit of his own clear confidence to the mix. He can be just as ear pleasing during the lower, sensitive verses and whispering necessary for “Tsunami” as he can belt out those heavenly air raid passages for “In the Name of SkyEye”. Kudos to the band for spending the time and money to attain a full, rich studio sound – the bass playing as prominent a role as the guitars and drums, necessary when you wish to pull off the little interplay nuances that keep the listeners attuned to every minor detail. Considering this is available at a ‘free/name your price’ spot on Bandcamp as of this writing, every metalhead would be foolish not to pick up on SkyEye at this point. The sky is literally the limit to the potential breakthrough this act could achieve if they keep up the high-quality output pouring from the speakers on this fine release.

Album:

Slovenians SKYEYE have been on the rise in the underground since their debut "Digital God" in 2018 and are slowly but steadily developing from an insider tip to a new permanent institution of the new (old) young guns in traditional heavy metal, which has experienced a kind of new revival over the last decade. These days, "Soldiers Of Light" is the second full-fledged album and once again takes you back to the days of classic heavy metal influenced by JUDAS PRIEST, SAXON and IRON MAIDEN. Fortunately, SKYEYE are still far away from being a copy, despite some reminiscences, including Jan Leščanec's vocals, which remind us of early Bruce Dickinson."Soldiers Of Light" keeps the flame of traditional metal burning. After a certain (expected and somewhat hackneyed) epicness in the intro "The Arrival", "King Of The Skies" starts the album in a wonderfully catchy way and with a fist-pumping chorus that is very promising. The title track and "Constellation" can also easily maintain the level and convince, before the long and broad "Brothers Under The Same Sun" seemingly intones the personal "Hallowed By Thy Name". On the previous album, too, there was already one or the other sprawling song. All the ideas in the long format are not yet completely convincing here, but SKYEYE have made themselves and now play the keyboard of the genre sovereignly enough to be able to set themselves apart from the competition a good deal through strong songwriting.SKYEYE should be remembered for the next Keep It True visit. With "In Saecula Saecularum" (could also be an ATLANTEAN KODEX song title) the band touches on GHOST theatricality, but don't worry, only as an intro to "Son Of God", which follows traditionally-metallic, but with a little oriental touch. It also gets epic again in the quarter-hour finale "Chernobyl", which has sadly received renewed attention in the meantime due to new activity in the corium of the former reactor core. The song is maybe a bit too long and the songwriting is not yet 100% right, but it is an exciting playground for SKYEYE.With "Soldiers Of Light" SKYEYE present a strong follow-up album to their debut "Digital God" from 2018 and show themselves matured in every respect. At the latest now, cowl brothers should keep an eye on the Slovenian high-flyers, because they could actually become the next superstars in the new (old) heavy metal sky.It doesn't really matter that "Detonate" is a somewhat average number in the second half and that "Eternal Starlight" remains a bit pale despite its interesting songwriting and ballad character. Eyes open dear Keep It True, these newcomers would more than deserve a slot with you!

Album:

Some bands play heavy metal. Some bands are heavy metal. Enter Slovenian powerhouse SkyEye, the best example of category two one could wish for. With their third record "New Horizons" just around the corner, the sworn brotherhood is officially and successfully applying for the role of heavy metal's latest and most courageous defenders of the faith, a force of steel that was simmering ever since it started out back in 2014."New Horizons" sets a huge exclamation mark behind an iron will of spreading the gospel of true heavy metal: SkyEye combine the grandeur of Iron Maiden with the punch of Judas Priest and the youthful vigour present on the first Hammerfall - indeed their latest album very much feels like the Swedes' 1997 breakthrough album "Glory To The Brave" in terms of zeal and ambition. No doubt: a new power has risen in the east, a heavy metal thunderstorm screaming with vengeance and hell-bent on taking the throne of traditional steel. "New Horizons" is their crown jewel in an already impressive collection, following the prestigious 'Newcomer of the year' award by iconic Metal Hammer magazine back in 2021.SkyEye may have been around for a decade already. And yet "New Horizons" feels like a genuine beginning, like a first milestone of many more to come. Be there to witness the start of something truly spectacular. You will regret it later if you don't. And that's a promise.
