The Winery Dogs is an American rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles, California, United States, in 2012 by Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen.The whole band started out as a project. Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan ended one project and were about to start a new one. They needed a lead singer/guitarist to fill the spot. Eddie Trunk heard about this and suggest Richie Kotzen to them. Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen have played together before in a band called "Mr. Big" so Billy Sheehan knew that Richie Kotzen could potentially fill the spot.They got together at a studio in Los Angeles and at the end of the jam session, they had a few skeletons of songs that would appear on the debut album. The band members all felt there was a chemistry between each other so they decided to record an album together. After their first album having success, they released a live concert DVD called "Unleashed in Japan 2013: The Winery Dogs." Prior to the Winery Dogs, all three members have had success with other bands. Richie Kotzen was known for playing in the band Poison and Mr. Big. Billy Sheehan is known for playing with Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Talas, and Mr. Big. Mike Portnoy is known for being the drummer in Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, and the Adrenaline Mob.When asked about the band's main influences, Mike Portnoy commented that they are working towards a classic rock sound, influenced by Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Grand Funk Railroad, as well as newer artists such as Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Black Crowes and Lenny Kravitz.The band's self-titled debut album was released in Japan on May 5, 2013 through Victor subsidiary WHD Entertainment, with a worldwide release following on July 23, 2013 through Loud & Proud Records.It was produced by Jay Ruston. It features 13 songs and they switched out the song "Time Machine" with the song "Criminal" for the Japan Edition.In June 2015, the band entered a studio around Los Angeles to record their sophomore album.In a July interview, Portnoy said the album was about to begin mixing that month, and it should be released before they begin their October tour.According to Amazon.co.uk, The Winery Dogs second album will be called Hot Streak and will be released on October 2, 2015.The Winery Dogs also have a band clinic in the summer called "Dog Camp." This camp allows musicians and fans to come meet, jam and learn from the Winery Dogs. Not only does it include individual clinics, but it also incorporates a band setting as well.

AllMusic reviewer James Christopher Monger compared the album to blues rock bands such as Cream and Led Zeppelin and modern hard rock bands like Soundgarden, Black Stone Cherry and Velvet Revolver. He called the album "hard-hitting, fun, yet meticulously crafted 21st century rock that manages to celebrate the past and kick open new doors."Released on July 23, 2013, it sold 10,200 copies in the United States in its first week, and reached No. 27 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.It also debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums,[4] No. 3 on Alternative Albums, and No. 4 on Independent Albums.The album has sold 58,000 copies in the United States as of September 2015.On the Japanese edition of the album, the track "Criminal" replaced "Time Machine" on the track listing. The order in which the songs are listed remains the same.
