Ayreon Listeni/ˈɛriən/ is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is mostly heavy metal and progressive rock but combines them with genres like folk, classical and electronica. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" (or "metal operas") because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.Ayreon's music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in rock music (guitars, bass guitar, drums, analogue synthesizers, electric organs) mixed with instruments more native to folk and classical music (e.g. mandolins, violins, violas, celli, flutes, sitars and didgeridoo). Lucassen writes the music and the lyrics, sings and plays most of the instruments on all of the Ayreon albums, alongside many guest musicians. His most regular collaborator is drummer Ed Warby. In addition, flute player Jeroen Goossens has featured on every Ayreon-release since 2004's "The Human Equation".Due to its particular nature, Ayreon never play live; however, several Ayreon songs were included in two live albums by other Lucassen's bands: Live on Earth by Star One and Live in the Real World by Stream of Passion.The first Ayreon CD, released in 1995, is The Final Experiment, which has a mixture of science fiction and medieval themes. The album features thirteen singers and seven instrumentalists, most of them Dutch. The Final Experiment is often mentioned as one of the first metal operas and a reviver of the rock opera genre. The album was originally titled Ayreon: The Final Experiment, with the artist listed as Arjen Lucassen, but upon re-release, the title was changed to The Final Experiment, and the artist was changed to Ayreon.Actual Fantasy from 1996 is the only Ayreon album without a continuous story. With its individual fantasy stories, it can still be considered a concept album, though. There are only three singers and three instrumentalists on Actual Fantasy. Themes inspired by songs on this album can be found on later Ayreon releases, particularly the two Universal Migrator albums. The album did not sell as well as its predecessor.On August 23, 2012, Lucassen published on his Youtube channel that he started composing "a new project".He officially revealed it to be an another Ayreon album (due in 2013) on October 9, 2012. Responding to fan comments on his website, Lucassen stated on October 12 that it will probably take a year before the album was completed.[10] He also stated that the album would be the start of a new story apart from the previous Ayreon albums, and confirmed the presence of Ed Warby as usual. On March 2013, Arjen revealed that the title of the upcoming album would be The Theory of Everything.On August 8, 2013, in an announcement on his Facebook channel, Lucassen stated that the new album was "basically ready" and "just in time for a release this year"

Ayreon mastermind Arjen Lucassen has announced the release of a live concert DVD based on his 2004 album The Human Equation.Entitled The Theater Equation, it was filmed last year in Rotterdam and features Dream Theater frontman James LaBrie alongside Heather Findlay, Anneke van Giersbergen and others, plus a 19-piece rock choir.The story follows lead character Me (LaBrie), an immoral businessman who battles against the personas of his emotions while in a coma after a car crash. Meanwhile, his closest friends hope he’ll recover – while never discovering the truth behind the supposed accident.Lucassen, who was special advisor to the production but did not take part, says: “Even today I’m amazed and touched by how hard everyone worked, and how much love and care they gave to make it all happen. Sometimes the dream becomes reality!” The Theater Equation will be released on June 17 via InsideOut, subtitled in nine languages and including nearly 90 minutes of additional material. It’s to be available in four-disc deluxe artbook, three-disc digipak, Blu-ray and download formats. More details will be revealed in due course.

Ayreon Universe – The Best of Ayreon Live, alternatively known as Ayreon Universe – Best of Ayreon Live or simply Ayreon Universe, is an upcoming live album and DVD/Blu-ray by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's progressive rock/metal rock opera project Ayreon, to be released on March 30, 2018.Unlike Ayreon's first live album The Theater Equation, which was a stage performance of the album The Human Equation, Ayreon Universe was performed as a traditional concert, with two additional songs from Star One, another project by Lucassen.It was recorded during a series of concerts in September 2017, which were the first ever official Ayreon concerts, although The Theater Equation was released (but not performed) as an official Ayreon product.The performance featured 16 singers, all of which had previously worked together with Lucassen on his studio albums.It was recorded during a series of concerts in September 2017, which were the first ever official Ayreon concerts; over 9000 fans were present in the attendance, with 30 cameras used for the filming.Promotion.Lucassen officially announced the album in January 2018.On January 30, 2018, Lucassen released the video for "Everybody Dies" on YouTube to promote the upcoming release, calling the track "a personal favorite".The album was released on seven different formats: single-disc Blu-ray, 2 DVDs, 2 CDs, 3 black LPs, a 3 gold LPs edition limited to 500 copies, a digital download version, and a "Limited Edition" featuring the contents from all first three editions.

'Transitus' is the new studio album of Ayreon. It builds around an entirely new story, not connected to the Ayreonuniverse although as always it does have some subtle links. The sci-fi theme makes way for a gothic ghost story set (partly) in the 19th century with elements of horror and the supernatural. It's on a dark thunderous night where our story of Abby and Daniel begins.'Transitus' is narrated by one of the most iconic and recognizable voices in sci-fi history, most known from his eight-year stint as Doctor Who, Tom Baker. "I was looking for a real storyteller with a mature, deep, warm voice. As a kid, I was a huge Doctor Who fan and my favourite doctor was Tom Baker. I couldn't believe my luck when he agreed to do it! We went to the UK to record him, and it was one of those unforgettable experiences.As with any Ayreonalbum, it is an explosive and expansive affair and features Tommy Karevik(Kamelot) as Daniel and Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber) as Abby. As with “Human Equation,” the characters are named and defined as individual characters (or supernatural beings).To summarize without spoiling too much, a stately manor in the 1800s is the estate of a father figure performed by Dee Snider, while the roles of his two sons protagonist Daniel and antagonist Henry are delivered by Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder) and Paul Manzi (Arena) respectively.The son Daniel is madly in forbidden love with Abby, one of the serving girls, performed by Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber). Young Abby’s parents are performed by Amanda Somerville and Johanne James.The less mortal roles are Toehider’s Mike Mills as a living statue, Epica’s Simone Simons as the Angel of Death, and Marcela Bovio and Caroline Westendorp as The Furies.And the whole story is narrated by Tom Baker of Doctor Who fame.And as the ice on the cake, ‘Tansitus’ is narrated by one of the most iconic and recognizable voices in sci-fi history, most known from his eight-year stint as Doctor Who, Tom Baker.As this is the sort of “Pulp Fiction” where the story is told out of sequence, our narrator informs us that Daniel’s tormented soul is already cast down into the quasi-Purgatory of Transitus, so we know before the story even gets underway that his courtship of Abby does not exactly proceed as planned.Tommy Karevik does a great job as he always does with any body of work. We find a groovy-heavy little jam as Daniel’s character attempts to plead his case to Simone Simons as the Angel of Death, along with her BFF’s “the Furies.” Paired with some delightfully Migrator-era Arjen guitar leads, the romantic tragedy proceeds to unfold for the listener.In the interest of spoiler avoidance, let’s leave the story there.What happens to Daniel? What is his goal in the afterlife? Can his soul be saved? Do Daniel and Abby listen to “Unchained Melody” and make pottery? Only the remaining 20 tracks of the album will tell.The vocalists handle themselves very well. When Daniel’s brother makes appearances, it’s just like listening to the latest Arena record, most notably “The Legend of Elijah Shade.” Simone actually manages to sound incredulously snarky, until the plight of Daniel and Abby manages to win the sympathy of the Angel.“Dumb Piece of Rock,” musically bears a great deal of resemblance to some of the folk-metal staples of “Human Equation,” with Mike Mills doing his usual exceptional work with incredible range and technique, although the talking statue seems to have no bearing on the rest of the story. It’s the sort of scene that most directors end up leaving on the cutting room floor.The one and only Dee Snider is a perfect fit for the disapproving father figure; he’s not gonna take it. Anymore. What will always be taken (gladly) is a Satch solo, which works surprisingly well as part of a parental eviction track.On the second half of the album, wherein Daniel has seven days and seven nights to make things right, Cammie acquits herself admirably as Abby. The depth of her timbre is perfectly complimentary to Tommy’s range.The main highlight of the second disc may actually be Marty Friedman transporting us back to some of his best phrasing since “Dragon’s Kiss” and “Rust in Peace.” The leads and harmonized parts are just, well, it’s Marty. So very possibly the one of the best heavy rock guitarist alive.The song “Abby in Transitus” opens up with some of the most nostalgic Ayreon writing and playing, invoking a bit of “Castle” and “Migrator.” The final track, “The Great Beyond” builds to a crescendo, with one last belting finisher by Tommy, a bit like LaBrie’s finish upon waking up in “Human Equation.”“Transitus” has exceptional musicianship, great singers, great guitar players and a really solid execution. Of course production is very good.

Ayreon Listeni/ˈɛriən/ is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is mostly heavy metal and progressive rock but combines them with genres like folk, classical and electronica. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" (or "metal operas") because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist.Ayreon's music is characterized by the use of traditional instruments in rock music (guitars, bass guitar, drums, analogue synthesizers, electric organs) mixed with instruments more native to folk and classical music (e.g. mandolins, violins, violas, celli, flutes, sitars and didgeridoo). Lucassen writes the music and the lyrics, sings and plays most of the instruments on all of the Ayreon albums, alongside many guest musicians. His most regular collaborator is drummer Ed Warby. In addition, flute player Jeroen Goossens has featured on every Ayreon-release since 2004's "The Human Equation".Due to its particular nature, Ayreon never play live; however, several Ayreon songs were included in two live albums by other Lucassen's bands: Live on Earth by Star One and Live in the Real World by Stream of Passion.The first Ayreon CD, released in 1995, is The Final Experiment, which has a mixture of science fiction and medieval themes. The album features thirteen singers and seven instrumentalists, most of them Dutch. The Final Experiment is often mentioned as one of the first metal operas and a reviver of the rock opera genre. The album was originally titled Ayreon: The Final Experiment, with the artist listed as Arjen Lucassen, but upon re-release, the title was changed to The Final Experiment, and the artist was changed to Ayreon.Actual Fantasy from 1996 is the only Ayreon album without a continuous story. With its individual fantasy stories, it can still be considered a concept album, though. There are only three singers and three instrumentalists on Actual Fantasy. Themes inspired by songs on this album can be found on later Ayreon releases, particularly the two Universal Migrator albums. The album did not sell as well as its predecessor.On August 23, 2012, Lucassen published on his Youtube channel that he started composing "a new project".He officially revealed it to be an another Ayreon album (due in 2013) on October 9, 2012. Responding to fan comments on his website, Lucassen stated on October 12 that it will probably take a year before the album was completed.[10] He also stated that the album would be the start of a new story apart from the previous Ayreon albums, and confirmed the presence of Ed Warby as usual. On March 2013, Arjen revealed that the title of the upcoming album would be The Theory of Everything.On August 8, 2013, in an announcement on his Facebook channel, Lucassen stated that the new album was "basically ready" and "just in time for a release this year"

Electric Castle Live and Other Tales is a live album and DVD/Blu-ray by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's progressive rock/metal rock opera project Ayreon, that was released on March 27, 2020.It is a live version of the 1998 studio album Into the Electric Castle, performed as an actual rock opera, complete with mise-en-scène; it is a recording of one of four live performances between September 13 and 15, 2019 in Tilburg, to celebrate the original album's 20th anniversary in a way similar to The Theater Equation, with songs from other Lucassen projects performed once the songs from the albums were all performed.Lucassen and fellow singers Anneke van Giersbergen, Damian Wilson, Edward Reekers, Edwin Balogh, Fish, and George Oosthoek returned to reprise their roles from the original album, alongside drummer Ed Warby and flutist Thijs van Leer.New additions include John "JayCee" Cuijpers of Praying Mantis, Simone Simons of Epica, Marcela Bovio of Mayan, and Mark Jansen of both Epica and Mayan, with actor John de Lancie acting as narrator.
