Stephen Richard Hackett (born 12 February 1950) is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. He gained prominence as a member of the British progressive rock group Genesis, which he joined in 1970 and left in 1977 to pursue a solo career. Hackett contributed to six Genesis studio albums, three live albums and seven singles. In 1986, Hackett co-founded the supergroup GTR with another progressive guitarist, Steve Howe of Yes and Asia. The group released a self-titled album that year, which peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and spawned the Top 20 single "When the Heart Rules the Mind". When Hackett left GTR in 1987, the group disbanded. After leaving GTR, Hackett resumed his solo career and has released albums and toured on a regular basis since. His body of work has encompassed many styles, such as progressive rock, world music, and classical. playing has influenced guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Brian May and Steve Rothery. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.
Album:
The Night Siren is the twenty-fifth studio album from English guitarist Steve Hackett, released on 24 March 2017 by Inside Out Music. The album was recorded within one year.Hackett explained that his writing comes from a three-person team of himself, his wife Jo, and his keyboardist and co-producer Roger King, with Hackett discussing and exchanging initial music and lyric ideas with the other two. When an idea is settled upon, music would be sent to the other performers or Hackett would travel to them and have their parts recorded on location.Hackett recorded the album by means of recording straight to a computer, rather than recording from an amplifier as he likes "to be able to have a conversation over the top of it and it can still sound very heavy". By connecting his amplifier and pedal board to the computer, Hackett experiments by "trying as many different setups and sounds as possible".The album features numerous artists and instruments from a variety of countries, including vocalists Kobi Farhi and Mīrā ‘Awaḍ, from Israel and Palestine respectively, and a sitar from India, a tar from the Middle East, the charango from Peru, which Hackett brought home after visiting the country, and the uilleann pipes from Ireland.Hackett did not intend to incorporate such elements of middle eastern and world music at first, but his interest in such music had started in the 1960s and realised the album began to take such a direction when the songs were being developed further.Parts of the album was recorded in Sardinia and Hungary, and involved a session of musicians from Iceland, Azerbaijan, Israel and Palestine working side by side, "proving that it is possible for people not to just coexist in peace but also do something extraordinary artistically together".The album will be released on 24 March 2017 through Inside Out Music. It will be available on CD, a double vinyl set with a CD, a digital download, and a special edition CD and Blu-ray, featuring a 5.1 surround sound mix and a "making of" documentary."In the Skeleton Gallery" was released on 4 February 2017.Hackett will support the album with his Genesis Revisited with Classic Hackett Tour through 2017, to commemorate the album and the fortieth anniversary of the Genesis studio album Wind & Wuthering (1976), the last one recorded with Hackett in the band.

Album:
Following the touring and release of the associated box-sets of the ‘Genesis Revisited’ back-catalogue over the past couple of years – universally acclaimed as an absolute triumph – Steve has returned to the day job with ‘Wolflight’, his first studio album since 2011’s ‘Beyond The Shrouded Horizon’.Since his split from Genesis in the late ‘70s, Hackett has put together a body of work that, with the odd minor caveat, has cemented his place in the pantheon of rock guitarists as one of the very best, and amongst progressive rock aficionados as the pre-eminent player of his generation. The startling originality of albums such as ‘Please Don’t Touch’, ‘Spectral Mornings’, ‘Darktown’ and ‘To Watch The Storms’ has served to heighten expectation whenever a new Hackett album is in the offing, and ‘Wolflight’ is no exception. It is to his credit that ‘Wolflight’ not only exceeds these expectations but also demonstrates that despite nearly fifty years in music he is still capable of producing a contemporary progressive rock masterpiece that both thrills and intrigues in equal measure.Written during breaks in the hectic ‘Revisited’ touring schedule, ‘Wolflight’ is an album of incessant twists and turns making journeys from Mongolia, Arabia and the deep south of the USA to Ancient Greece and even Battersea funfair – together with enlightening excursions into love and the human psyche. The ten tracks get underway with the sound of a wolf’s howl morphing into the pounding drum rhythms of instrumental opener ‘Out Of The Body’, which acts as an overture to the album and gives a foretaste of the banquet to come. From the middle-eastern vibes of both the title track and the superb instrumental ‘Dust And Dreams’ with its dominant, insistent bass line, to the pastoral acoustics of ‘Earthshine’ and ‘Heart Song’ and from the childhood memories of ‘The Wheel’s Turning’ to the relationship breakdown of ‘Love Song To A Vampire’ (with its ‘How Fragile We Are’ Sting vibe) the quality just keeps coming. The anthemic ‘Corycian Fire’ with its ever-changing rhythms and tempos is a stand-out, as is Steve’s take on the fight for the freedom of slaves in the deep south of the USA on ‘Black Thunder’.And running through all this brilliance – like a stick of Blackpool rock – is Hackett’s stunning guitar work, both electric and acoustic. Has he ever played better? I don’t think so.As usual, with the likes of Nick Beggs, Rob Townsend and Roger King he has surrounded himself with some of the finest musicians around, and the addition of a full orchestra, used in a powerful and innovative way, is the icing on the cake.‘Wolflight’ really harks back to the brilliance of Hackett’s early solo work and is undoubtedly his most varied, instrumentally dazzling and evocative work for many years.

Bio:
Album:
For a younger generation of prog/metal enthusiasts, learning about the genre’s original principles is essential to understanding the innovations that were introduced, from technical efficiency through adapting sounds and instruments from different cultural traditions to creating sonic universes that push sound barriers effortlessly. Legendary guitarist Steve Hackett has been doing all of the above throughout his long career and continues to aim high now in his late 60’s.The ex Genesis axeman has crafted at times some exotic solo albums that capture the spirit of his travels through America, Mexico, India, Jordan, Australia and Peru to name a few destinations. In the last few years his records have reflected his yearning to connect to places of spiritual significance such as The Grand Canyon, Chichen Itza, the Ajanta Caves, Petra, Uluru and Machu Pichu. Hackett’s soon to be unveiled 26th L.P ‘At The Edge Of light’ is no exception; it is world music that truly unites cultures from around the globe. The title and the lightning bolt on the cover art reflect a seismic shift that needs to take place if humanity wishes to avoid its darkest times and pending doom. When you listen to the album’s opening track “Fallen Walls and Pedestals” you are immediately transported to the Middle East on board some of Hackett’s soaring guitar phrases. The most enchanting composition on the album is without a doubt “Shadow and Flame” a tribute to Hindustani classical music. Other stand out tracks are “Under The Eye of the Sun” a classic Genesis sounding song that would have worked well in their heyday and “Underground Railroad” that takes on a new sonic direction for the guitarist, celebrating Americana music, harmonica, dobro and all; the song is based on the story of African American women Harriet Tubman who helped slaves escape through a series of safe houses known as the underground railroad in America’s pre civil war era.Hackett’s view on the state of current affairs is also expressed on “Beasts of our Time” a chilling ballad accompanied by saxophone and orchestra that plays on the words of prime minister Neville Chamberlain’s unwise statement (Peace For Our Time) just before the start of the Second World War. The song is also a reflection on the rise of far right politics in the west and a reminder for all citizens who care for their fellow humans to reject the misguided philosophy of nationalism and closed borders. The last three songs “Descent”, “Conflict” and “Peace” bind up the ideas that Hackett is evoking thematically. Descent plays on the sound of an intense march towards war reminiscent of Ravel’s “Bolero” but much, much darker, “Conflict” takes the listener to the most thrilling moment of a spy thriller soundtrack and “Peace” is the buoyant resolution that concludes the premise of the album in a very British sounding style. The only disappointing tracks on the album are “Hungry Years” a song that sounds out of place and might be just a filler and “These Golden Wings” a long, slightly self indulgent composition that is heavily orchestrated and despite some superb playing ultimately doesn’t really satisfy.Like Hackett’s former band mate Peter Gabriel, he’s taken on music that allows him to experiment with ethnic sounds and instruments and merge them successfully with his electric guitar playing. There are certainly some intriguing ideas and compositions that live up to his pedigree but ‘At the Edge of Light’ seems to borrow a lot of the same musical and lyrical themes to his most recent releases. If you’re eager to add this album to your collection when it drops on January 25th it might also be worth giving ‘Wolflight’ and ‘The Night Siren’ a listen if you haven’t already.

Album:
A dozen years have cruelly stampeded by since Steve Hackett’s last full album of acoustic-based compositions (and that last year was the cruelest of all). In that time he has proven himself a tireless stalwart of the rock world with the energy and inspiration of a man half his age; crafting five original albums, a collaboration album with Chris Squire, and of course his wildly popular Genesis Revisited project. Relentless touring to packed houses of elated crowds has prompted the issue of no less than seven epic live packages showcasing his own work over the last forty-five years as well as that of his former band. This is all mightily impressive, but for listeners who particularly adore works such as Tribute, Metamorpheus and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the divine new album Under A Mediterranean Sky is cause for jubilance. While there is much to enjoy in Hackett’s pounding rock rhythms, group vocals and mesmerizing electric guitar solos, there is at least an equal amount to relish when he turns his attention – and fingernails – to nylon strings and orchestral arrangements (courtesy of longtime musical partner Roger King). Finding himself off the road indefinitely with the goings-on of 2020, it seems he naturally immersed himself in something altogether more introspective, though no less stimulating or inventive. The celebrated guitarist comes across as a hopelessly imaginative soul; a wanderer and traveler easily swept up in the romance of these cities and their vast histories, yearning to translate those feelings to music. The 51 minutes that make up Under A Mediterranean Sky find him and his cohorts balancing the sound of more conventional instruments by employing viola, duduk, tar, charango, and the Iraqi oud (pictured) to bring to life those impressions of the Mediterranean locales they’ve wandered through, supped in, slept in, and even performed in. You may deduce that there is something of a world music element to this latest platter… and you’d be right. The album wastes no time reacquainting us with the majesty of this facet of Hackett’s music. Opening track Mdina (The Walled City) begins in familiar fashion with a traditionally dramatic theme before dissipating into flurries of acoustic notes that quickly remind us why he is so often cited as being a ‘master’ of the strings. Adriatic Blue is another early highlight, the kind of piece Hackett has been perfecting since his earliest acoustic albums that lulls the listener into its gentle beauty. It’s also worth noting that the simple but striking album cover image is a most suitable visual companion to these tracks. The mysterious Sirocco floats along dreamily, enlivened midway by ethnic percussion, before the charming and breezy Joie de Vivre lightens the mood. Conveying images of the wonder of life without any forced, saccharine cheerfulness, this is a well-constructed piece with a naturally flowing melody, ranking among the album’s finest moments. The Memory Of Myth intoxicates the senses, from its crying violin intro to the varied and complementary flavours throughout, while follow-up track Scarlatti Sonata harkens back to 1983’s Bay Of Kings, the kind of enchanting solo guitar piece that Hackett has excelled at throughout his career. An elegant return to the acoustic/orchestral genre…Brother John Hackett drops by to provide his always tasteful flute accompaniment on the lovely Casa del Fauno, and Hackett bandmate Rob Townsend’s feverish saxophone accents The Dervish And The Djin; a denser, more robust piece with darker themes and rich orchestration. One might imagine this track as a musical backdrop to some bustling, exotic market where eye-patched vendors shoo away thieving monkeys and offer spices unheard of.Reviews of strong releases can sometimes appear lopsided or rife with blind praise. So if a weaker link must be pinpointed, the track Lorato – sandwiched between two weightier pieces – feels a bit ‘been there… done that’, and thus merely glides by inconsequentially. Pleasant enough, the track is nonetheless dwarfed (though largely because of Hackett’s own incredibly high bar that he continues to set for himself). Perhaps a spot on one of his rock albums would have served the piece better and allowed its character to shine through, but alongside these gems it becomes overshadowed.Speaking of character, the two pieces that conclude the album are positively brimming with it. The haunting and gorgeous atmosphere of the flamenco-infused Andalusian Heart propels it to the top of this new batch, and I dare say near the top of Hackett’s entire acoustic oeuvre. The delicate tranquility of album closer The Call Of The Sea matches its evocative title, invoking thoughts of deep blue, sun-glittered waters and the fascinating histories of the cities dotting their shores. It’s a remarkably soothing finale, and it’s no backhanded compliment to suggest that it could easily lull one into a restful slumber.Hackett hasn’t lost an ounce of ability over the decades. His sharply-honed skills have only grown in stature, and he is more than worthy of the dignity and prestige with which he is spoken of in music circles. One can only doff their cap to his fifty years as a professional musician, his now colossal catalogue, and the way he continues to deliver volumes of such varied styles now into his seventies. Under A Mediterranean Sky is an elegant return to this genre; a lush, vibrant oasis in a cracked and colourless modern landscape. Simultaneously comforting and compelling music from a composer who continues to do his part in contributing peace and beauty to a troubled world via his boundless creativity. Bravo Steve Hackett, it wouldn’t have been the same without you all these years.Under A Mediterranean Sky is released 22 January and is available from all usual vendors on LP and CD. Album:
Legendary guitarist Steve Hackett releases his new studio rock album "Surrender Of Silence" via Inside Out Music. The album features 11 new songs as Steve has been working hard through lockdown and, for the first time, has completed two studio albums for release within the same year! Hot on the heels of his classical-acoustic travelogue "Under A Mediterranean Sky", which was released in January and hit the #2 spot in the UK Classical Album Chart, "Surrender Of Silence" is a further exploration of Hackett's love of world music, discovering different sounds, moods and textures to deliver a rock album of extraordinary variety, power and beauty. As with "Under A Mediterranean Sky", "Surrender Of Silence" was also recorded during lockdown and, again, Hackett has called upon some of his musical friends from across the world to contribute. Hackett's regular touring band of Roger King (keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements), Rob Townsend (sax, clarinet), Jonas Reingold (bass), Nad Sylvan (vocals) and Craig Blundell (drums) are supplemented by Phil Ehart and Nick D'Virgilio (drums), the vocal talents of Amanda Lehmann, Durga and Lorelei McBroom, Christine Townsend (violin, viola), Malik Mansurov (tar) and Sodirkhon Ubaidulloev (dutar). This new album is full-on electric ... "Lockdown cobwebs are blown away in one fell-swoop here", says Steve Hackett. "With the monster rhythm section of Jonas, Craig, Nick and Phil along with Rob's soaring sax and bass clarinet, Nad, Amanda and myself on vocals, Roger's darkly powerful organ and my guitar, we plunge full-pelt into that wild release of energy."The journey takes us from the classical orchestrations of Russia ("Natalia") to the plains of Africa ("Wingbeats") to mysterious Eastern shores ("Shanghai To Samarkand"), all via the ocean's depths ("Relaxation Music For Sharks, featuring Feeding Frenzy"). "The Devil's Cathedral" pools the talents of Hackett's entire touring band and features King's atmospheric Gothic organ and a powerhouse rhythm display from Blundell and Reingold.Hackett's vocals have never been bettered and his duet with Amanda Lehmann adds emotion to "Scorched Earth", a lament for the environmental horrors facing our planet. Throughout Hackett's guitars add a rich tapestry of colour with soaring solos and intricate weaving melodies."It's a 'no holds barred' album", adds Hackett, "riding that wave, unleashing those demons, dreams and nightmares, all crashing together over the shore. I enjoyed the power of this album allowing my guitar to scream in joy and rage ... and once again flying across those oceans to distant lands. It's terrific to connect creatively with musicians from far flung places, particularly when we've all been unable to meet. We all have a voice in our cacophony of sound and we cry out together in the 'Surrender Of Silence'."

Legendary rock guitarist Steve Hackett will release his new studio album, "The Circus And The Nightwhale", via InsideOutMusic. A rite-of-passage concept album with a young character called Travla at the centre of it, the album's 13 tracks have an autobiographical angle for the musician who says about his 30th solo release: "I love this album. It says the things I've been wanting to say for a very long time.""The Circus And The Nightwhale" is Steve's first new music in over two years. It follows the beautiful acoustic "Under A Mediterranean Sky" from January 2021 - which rose to #2 in the UK Classical chart and in September of that year, his metallic masterpiece "Surrender Of Silence", which hit the UK Top 40. His 2023 live album, "Foxtrot At Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live In Brighton", reached #2 in the Rock & Metal Chart.Steve's new album promises ballads, blues, blistering progressive rock ... and healthy measures of theatre and fantasia. Recorded between tours in 2022 and 2023 at Siren studio in the UK - with guest parts beamed in from Sweden, Austria, the US, Azerbaijan and Denmark, the line-up for "The Circus And The Nightwhale" includes some familiar faces alongside Steve on electric and acoustic guitars, 12-string, mandolin, harmonica, percussion, bass and vocals; Roger King (keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements), Rob Townsend (sax), Jonas Reingold (bass), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Craig Blundell (drums) and Amanda Lehmann on vocals. Nick D'Virgilio and Hugo Degenhardt return as guests on the drumstool, engineer extraordinaire Benedict Fenner appears on keyboards and Malik Mansurov is back with the tar. Finally, Steve's brother John Hackett is present once more on flute.
