Kiss was formed in New York in '72 by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen) and Gene Simmons (Gene Klein). The line-up was rounded out by drummer Peter Criss (Crisscoula), located through a Rolling Stone ad, and lead guitarist Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), who answered an ad in the Village Voice. The band's cartoon image, kabuki makeup and 4th-of-July stageshow concept was in place from the start, and they began promoting their own hall shows in NYC. TV director Bill Aucoin saw them, became their manager, and secured a deal for them with Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records within two weeks. Three LPs were released in a year's time, but the live fourth LP, Alive! (1975) contained their first huge hit, "Rock And Roll All Nite." Until the early '80, Kiss was unstoppable, with two huge-selling Marvel Comics, a network TV movie and four simultaneously-released solo albums under their studded belts. In '80, Criss left for a solo career and since then, the drum and lead positions have been ever-changing. In '83, the band stripped away the makeup and celebrated renewed interest."You wanted the best, you got it! The hottest band in the land: KISS!" So went the rally cry at the beginning of a Kiss concert, an event of exploding pyrotechnics, vomited blood and louder-than-God hard rock. Their fan club--The Kiss Army--swelled to six-figures strong during the band's '70s heyday, and between 1974 and today they've sold in excess of 70 million albums.In '96, the original band reformed (made up?), and took their full costume-makeup-pyro 1976 show on the road--for a year-long stint--resulting in one of the most successful rock tours ever. Conjecture that the band wanted to quit on a high note has remained unproven; anything could happen in Kiss' future.

Before returning to the record-breaking heights of KISS, PAUL STANLEY took over the world’s most iconic clubs in 1989 for his first ever solo tour. Stripped of makeup and pyrotechnics, he delivered nothing but pure, electrifying hard rock gigs.This March 11th performance showcased a raw mix of KISS staples, tracks from his 1978 solo debut and a high-energy cover of ‘Communication Breakdown’, now being released 2026 as “Touch Of Kiss“, featured in exclusive here.The setlist at the time was a dream for KISS fans as it included songs from Paul’s ‘78 solo album that were never played live before (“Tonight You Belong To Me”, “Goodbye”, “Wouldn’t You Like To Know Me”), 70s KISS songs not played for many years such as “I Want You”, “I Stole Your Love”, and “C’mon and Love Me” plus it was exciting at the time that Paul did an unreleased KISS song…..”Hide Your Heart”. Also the (at the time) largely unknown band Warrant would open many of the shows on this tour.This is a very well done bootleg available on CD and vinyl, and there’s various versions – all with the same cover art but signed by threes different ‘labels’: IDS, Blue Line, and Rockin’ Bear Records. To make it even more collectible, there’s two audio versions too: just the songs and other with Paul’s banter in between.Of course, PAUL STANLEY band is awesome including the late Bob Kulick on guitar, unique Eric Singer on drums, Kulick’s partner in Balance and Skull bassist Dennis St.James (aka Dennis Feldman), and Cinderella / KISS keyboard player Gary Corbett.KISS didn’t tour or perform in 1989 or support the “Smashes, Thrashes & Hits” compilation outside of a few radio show appearances. Instead, Paul Stanley embarked on his first solo tour breaking away from the safety of the KISS cocoon.Paul, promoting the tour commented, “I always said I want to get close to the fans, and you can’t get much closer than the clubs… It’s like when your wife lets you go on vacation by yourself and hopes you behave well”. As a way to reinvigorate his performance, Paul felt, “I’m safe within the confines of the band, but I think everybody should work as a solo artist”.According to Paul, the solo tour was essentially based on a friend asking him if he’d be interested in playing the Ritz in New York City, a situation where he “could just go in and take the money and run”. It got him thinking that he did want to play, but that he didn’t just want to go in to the situation with that attitude and instead wanted to do it right. He’d enjoyed KISS’s outings in 1988 at that club and at the Marquee in London.But Paul was adamant, “I didn’t want to do some kind of gig that’s just showing up at a club and saying to the fans, ‘Be glad I’m here and whatever I play is good enough.’ I don’t buy that kind of stuff. I like quality. Once I started organizing the gig, I decided instead of doing one or two shows, I might as well do 20 or 25. Same amount of time spent”.It was also an artistic situation where Paul could reconnect with his roots: “You say you can never go back or go home, but I think you can. You know, you don’t have to stay. I think we work hard to get out of the confinement of certain places, but knowing we’re not stuck makes it all the sweeter”. In addition, he could reconnect with his core audience to get a feel for the future: “It’s important that you keep as much in common with your audience as possible”.Once Paul had decided to do the tour he faced a challenge — what to perform? He recalled, “They said, ‘You don’t have to rehearse, just come in and jam, do some old songs.’ I said, ‘That’s the ultimate rip-off.’ You have fans coming, and basically your attitude toward them seems to be, ‘You should be happy I’m here, and whatever I feel like playing is good enough.’ I didn’t want to do that. I said, ‘If I’m going to do this, I’m going to rehearse a band and really do it right.’ Once I started getting into that, I realized that if I’m going to do one club, I should do 20; the amount of work is the same”.The core of the set would be the songs from the catalog with Paul’s name on them — as he put it, “the vehicle may be different, but the song is the same.” Rather than giving the fans the same-old same-old, he dug into his 1978 solo album for three songs that had never previously been performed live, and chose the band’s then current single, “Let’s Put The X In Sex,” which KISS would never perform in electric concert.For good measure, “Hide Your Heart,” an unused leftover planned for inclusion on the next KISS album would be a surprise song for fans while a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown” completed things.
