Bio:

Whitecross is a Christian metal band that formed in 1985 in Waukegan, IL releasing their first recording in 1987. Their early albums, which often invite comparisons to Ratt, are laced with fast, technical guitar work. In 1994, Rex Carroll split with lead vocalist Scott Wenzel. Scott retained the use of the name "Whitecross" while Rex went on to form King James with Jimi Bennett (see below). At this point the band's sound underwent a drastic change.Whitecross has won three Dove Awards with Triumphant Return (in 1990) and In the Kingdom (in 1992) winning "Metal Album of the Year" and Come unto the Light from the Unveiled album winning "Hard Music Recorded Song of the Year" at the 25th GMA Dove Awards in 1994.In 1994 prior to work starting on the Unveiled album, guitarist Rex Carroll left to form the band King James and pursue other musical ventures. In 1998, singer Scott Wenzel took a two-year break to do mission work in Paraguay, South America. During this time, Whitecross went on hiatus before re-emerging at Cornerstone Festival in 2000 when Carroll and Wenzel re-formed the band with Rex, Scott, Michael Feighan and newcomer Benny Ramos providing bass, keyboards and vocals. Finally having achieved a long-sought lineup stability, the band started performing on a regular basis. In 2005, the band went back into the studio to record Nineteen Eighty Seven, which featured re-recordings of nine of the ten songs from the band's self-titled debut album (You're Mine being the exclusion), as well as a re-recording of the song Love on the Line (previously unavailable on CD) and a new guitar instrumental by Rex Carroll. On April 5, 2008, they played at the Legends of Rock festival in Ennepetal, Germany. Beginning in July 2008, they played the first of several short tours in Guatemala featuring shows in Guatemala City, Panajachel, Huehuetenango, among other cities. On March 12, 2011, Rex made post on his Facebook page announcing that he is "working on some guitar tracks for new Whitecross songs" which is likely to be for their new album.

Album:

"Nineteen Eighty Seven" is a completely new recording of the original self-titled album by WHITECROSS, originally released... yes, in 1987. How dare such a phenomenal band with some of the most talented, but unfortunately, underrated musicians around re-release their brilliant and quintessential US hard / hair metal debut? Well, they make the darn thing better than the original, that's how. No kidding. Better. "Nineteen Eighty Seven" was released in 2006 but soon went out of print, so Girder Records is re-issuing it again. The amazingly talented partnership of singer Scott Wenzel and guitar wizard Rex Carroll reunited last decade and taken what to a handful of aficionados was a brilliant slab of 'white metal' and turned the bugger up to 11.No stone left unturned, many basic tracks not only were remastered, but mostly re-recorded! Yes, they re-recorded the whole debut except for 'Your Mine', but has 2 additional bonus tracks: "Love On The Line" from the '6.98 Love On The Line EP', and a new instrumental by Rex Carroll called "Re:Animate". And I will say, after all these years the guys haven't lost any of their musical prowess. If anything Rex is faster and Scott's voice is just as powerful as it ever was - which is amazing considering the time and the Stephen Pearcy-esque raspiness of his voice. If you can't get enough of bands like Ratt, Dokken, Stryper and any number of million album sellers from the late '80s, then Whitecross' "Nineteen Eighty Seven" is a mandatory listen. If shredders like George Lynch, Warren DeMartini or Eddie Van Halen gets your head bobbing and your feet tapping then again Rex Carroll and company are a band that you need to hear.

Album:

When a rock or metal band finds a way to exist through thick and thin, decades of industry changes, genres uprising and overshadowing the market as a whole, there are only a few in which after all this time are still making a huge impact within people’s lives and musical influences.Whether it be Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, their longevity and influence has led the way for many people. Now, when Whitecross announced a brand new album, you could imagine the excitement that came from that announcement.Since forming in 1985, their upcoming full length will be their first release in 17 years, since Nineteen Eighty Seven (2005), was dropped with former founding frontman Scott Wenzel. The band have now recently released a pre-production EP entitled Fear No Evil which features brand new lead vocalist Dave Roberts, who joined in 2020. Many of us who went to the first annual Immortal Fest, got our chance to pick up the CD before everyone else, which was kind of a treat.Another amazing treat was bearing witness to Rex Carroll, tearing it up with a solo piece and with Pastor Bob Beeman (Sanctuary) and I standing together and witnessing this amazing man’s know-how of his guitar. The track “Man In The Mirror” is the kind of song, that immediately brings you back to the Whitecross we know, in the same vein as “Attention Please”, hearing David for the first time recording and hitting those notes is very impressive, especially when you’re not in your twenties anymore. However, we aren’t complaining, with Rex Carroll at his iconic best, with blistering solos and incredible song writing, you also notice that the band have been together for so long, that for me, nothing has changed since I first heard them in 1991 with “In The Kingdom”.“Lion Of Judah” is up next, a very good rock n’ roll song, that delivers their ever-continuing strong message of Jesus Christ, and elements of blues rock filter throughout, with Rex displaying the talent that he is renowned for. Still, creating that melodic hard rock and metal feel, with some serious interludes that honor the song in a very unique way. Finally the title track of this delivery for everyone to enjoy before the main act, the song “Fear No Evil”, starts with an electric acoustic as David vocally displays majestic finesse. Again melodically pushing into late ’80s to early ’90s hard rock, still featuring that blues component and a slightly raspy and gruff vocal elegance that David continues to impact within the single as a whole.Overall, I loved the 3 track EP Fear No Evil, it does bring you down memory lane with previously released material and revisiting what the band have accomplished. However, Whitecross has breathed more life into this current format as a band and we love it.

Line-Up:

David Roberts – Vocals
Rex Carroll – Guitars
Benny Ramos – Bass
Michael Feighan – Drums

Tracklist:

01. The Way We Rock
02. Lion of Judah
03. Jackhammer
04. Man in the Mirror
05. Blind Man
06. Fear No Evil
07. 29,000
08. Saints of Hollywood
09. Vendetta
10. Wishing Well
11. Further On
