Bio:

The Original Sinners is a hard rock/glam metal band from Amersham, South East England, England, United Kingdom, that was formed in 1987.This is one ultra-rare band!Let's face it: even among the most discerning Hard Rock connoisseurs in the broadest sense of the term, the number of people who have heard of THE ORIGINAL SINNERS must be very limited. This is because the band made a brief appearance in the Hard/Heavy genre in the early 90s before disappearing off the radar. What's more, the band were never signed to a record label and confined themselves to pressing their only album to 500 copies. In other words, you had to be pretty damn lucky at the time to get your hands on what can only be described as a collector's item.Still, the Internet has made it possible to discover a whole host of bands and artists from all eras who had flown under the radar when they were alive. That's how I came across THE ORIGINAL SINNERS. A little digging reveals a few things about this British band: they were a quintet from the town of Amersham (in the Buckinghamshire region) and formed in 1987. It wasn't until 1992 that THE ORIGINAL SINNERS finally released their only album, Love Or The Money.

Album:

As rare as they come with only 500 copies pressed. At first glance, THE ORIGINAL SINNERS may seem like just another hard rock band on the circuit between 1988 and 1993, but while they may not look like much at first glance, they're not ridiculous. First of all, the singer (a certain Pete Stevens, also on guitar) is quite influenced by the iconic INXS, the late Michael Hutchence, and while he doesn't copy him, he does have some tics that may sound quite familiar to fans of the Australian band. As for the songs, they are inspired by Heavy-Rock/Big-Rock. While 'Shoot It Up' may not seem revolutionary at first glance, this mid-tempo number being more or less in the same vein as what BABYLON A.D. were doing between 1989 and 1992, it's still just as effective as it needs to be, with a crescendo of slamming bass and subdued guitars before the whole thing blazes up into an energetic broth. But the ORIGINAL SINNERS really come into their own on the Rock n' Roll/Big Rock staple '123 For Love', which is as punchy and enthusiastic as it gets, cleverly enhanced by heady riffs, and on 'Little Sister', a well-crafted, catchy compo that reminds us of INXS trying their hand at Hard Rock, skilfully drawing inspiration from VAN HALEN, POISON and others. On 'Push'n' Shove', a Big-Rock compo that shakes things up and could be compared to what TORA TORA did on their first album, or on 'Barbed Wire And Roses', which is the archetype of catchy, tube-like, unifying Hard Rock, with its guitar harmonies as a nod to THIN LIZZY proving particularly addictive. As for the rest of the album, the groovy, sensual mid-tempo 'She's Getting Higher' is enhanced by an omnipresent bass that's as warm and incandescent as the guitars, while the slower, bluesy strum solo contrasts somewhat unexpectedly with the rest of the song. 'Love Or The Money' is a basic Big-Rock compo, pretty much in line with what was being done (for the better) in the late 80s and early 90s. More anecdotally, there's a bluesy instrumental in 'Sailing On The 42 C's', whose slide guitar intro nods to the Wild West.If you look hard enough for the band's major weakness, you'll find it in the ballads. "Heartbreak Road' is the prototype of the classic, arch-classic power ballad with its hint of melancholy, but its hackneyed chorus makes for a very hackneyed affair, the superb guitar solo proving largely insufficient to transcend the track. As for the acoustic ballad 'Don't Prazy For Me', it lacks sparkle and personality: it gives the distinct impression of having been heard a thousand times before, only (much) better, and its chorus is so flawed that, in any case, the English quintet wouldn't have stood a chance of competing with 'November Rain' (GUNS N' ROSES), 'Nothing Else Matters' (METALLICA) or 'Bed Of Roses' (BON JOVI).All things considered, Love Or The Money may not be perfect, but it's a pleasant little surprise from the Hard Rock/Big Rock era, in that we weren't expecting much from such a rarity discovered after the fact. Of course, on the face of it, this record has no chance of appealing to fans of all-out innovation. However, with a singer with an interesting voice, a few well-crafted riffs and some more than decent tracks, THE ORIGINAL SINNERS had a few assets that would probably have benefited from further development to allow the English combo to break new ground and assert a real identity that could have been interesting. Released 2 or 3 years earlier, and with the help of a competent record label and an intelligent, serious manager, this album could have had a chance.Overall the whole cd is very very good.
