Black Spiders are an English rock band based in Sheffield, England.Their second album entered the UK Albums Chart reaching No. 59.The band formed in early 2008, originally playing a few shows under the name 'the Black Spiders'. They released the three track single "St. Peter" in December 2008, to coincide with a small run of dates with Airbourne on mainland Europe in December of the same year, their first ever tour.Black Spiders, originally put together to celebrate the passing of a dear friend and to tear up some classic rock n’ roll tunes in his honour, led by Pete ‘Spider’ Spiby with side-kick Ozzy ‘Ozzy’ Lister they set about writing tall tales and wrestling monstrous riffs. Killer shows followed with likeminded friends and heroes such as; SuperSuckers, and Dwarves….audiences were duly slain!With the line up accommodating a face ripping triple-axe-attack, fully complemented by a rhythmic demolition squad expertly handled by ‘Tiger Si’ Atkinson on drums and Adam ‘Fox’ Irwin on bass, they set forth and tore up mainland Europe with the mighty Airbourne. Next came UK with The Datsuns, Winnebago Deal, Parlor Mob, Stone Gods and Danko Jones - these men are ready to take on a world that is eager for some rock and/or roll and have been called to appear at this year’s Download festival at the gladiatorial Donnington Park.If you’re one of those people who like: a) the first three Black Sabbath albums, b) masturbating in church, or c) masturbating in church with Black Sabbath on your ipod, then you’re going to go absolutely fucknuts for The Black Spiders. Recalling the likes of Turbonegro, Zeke, or a less intellectual Afghan Whigs (that’s meant as a complement), this four piece peddle crotch-sodden sleaze-rock that touches upon questions of theology, violence and, naturally, major league rutting. They’re blatantly going to hell, but before they do, be sure to crack one off in their honor next time you’re in Bible class.”

When a band reaches out to their fans to fund your sophomore album, you naturally place a certain amount of trust in that band for delivering a great record; after all you don’t want your money wasted even though you’ll still get goodies in return for your generosity. On the flipside, this also puts a certain degree of pressure on the artist- where do they draw the line on creating a people-pleasing album or making one the band themselves are satisfied with?In 2011 Black Spiders created a sizable crater from the impact that their debut album left on rock and metal. Filled with a meaty menu of chunky riffs, infectious lyrics and raw talent, “Sons Of The North” left you gnawing for more. It was a reinvigorating record and much like Airbourne did, provided a genuine kick in the nuts for people to refocus not on experimentation and expansion of their music but on a simple formula of Rock ‘n’ Roll fury in all its potency.“This Savage Land” oversees Black Spiders treading familiar paths on their rock ‘n’ roll journey in a continuation of their energised debut. An announcement of the arrival of instruments and the ensuing chaos sets the tone in album opener ‘Knock You Out’. The short sharp punch to the gut that this song packs is just as hard hitting as the hostile lyrics that Pete “Spider” Spiby threatens. This confronting tone is present throughout the album but spikes on tracks such as ‘Young Tongues’ and ‘Stick It To The Man’. Both feature heated mood swings from Spiby that are reflected just as rebelliously in defiant rhythmic stamps of riff driven guitars and crashing drums.It’s at the album’s halfway point that Black Spiders dare to step into more risky lands. Up to this point they’ve supplied the fans, some who funded this album, with their typical rock music with zero bull*** aesthetics. Now it’s time to do mix it up a bit. The first curveball is delivered in ‘Put Love In Its Place’ where Black Spiders blend melodic stoner rock rhythms with tangible eruptions of riff driven disorder, all in a ballad like format. Another song that has untraditional features is ‘Sleepy Demon’. Over this stoner rock road are cracks in the path where wild weeds of Orange Goblin grooves sprout freely. It’s an interesting way to close the album but does to a good job in reminding people, especially as it’s the album closer, that they are still going to experiment with their sound in order to progress.Although their reputation and solid perspective of rock music suggest that Black Spiders are seasoned practitioners of their craft, they are still a relatively small band. If you are new to them then this album will undoubtedly seal the deal in understanding what and who they are. Hard hitting ragers such as ‘Teenage Knife Gang’ and the jaunty ‘Trouble’ reveal guitarists Mark Thomas and Ozzy Lister as two bastard children of Motorhead. The testosterone-led single ‘Balls’ practically reeks of musty leather and alcoholic breath from the gig last night. Though not as instantly lovable as their single ‘KISS Tried To Kill Me’, it’s still one of the album’s best examples for mandatory head banging."This Savage Land" is not a ground breaking or a nostalgic blast from the past. Overall it is simply a great album that sounds like the band are not trying to take us back to 1980 but instead showing us, contrary to Gene Simmons' opinion, rock is not dead.

Against all of the odds, Black Spiders have crafted an album that features 13 tracks of high-energy, feel-good rock n’roll contrasted by demonic doom that despite the disjointed, isolated way it was recorded. It sounds like a band, firing on all cylinders. “We had to dig down deep to pull out some gems and what would we want from Black Spiders,” questions Pete. War, vengeance, mental health, death, conservation & climate change, where are we from? Relationships, friendships, our flaws. Where are we going? Alien life and Mother Earth - some of which made the record.

‘Can’t Die, Won’t Die’ is the fourth studio album from Sheffield’s Black Spiders, and their second since reforming in 2020 after a brief hiatus. Nothing is ever easy for BLACK SPIDERS, never straightforward, there’s always a plethora of circumstances, and karma. Their last album, released in 2023, was titled Can’t Die, Won’t Die and here we are at the dawn of 2025 and they’re still not f@cking dead.
Back with a brand-new album of high-voltage smashers, the Sheffield righteous rockers are set to release their fifth effort ”Cvrses” on Dark Riders via Cargo Distribution. Featuring twelve new tracks of exactly the kind of soaring rock ‘n roll action we’ve all come to expect, love and demand from Black Spiders, their intentions are the same now as they were from the very moment they started back in 2008 – be true to yourself, no compromise.And why is the album called Cvrses? Well, Cvrses has double meanings, on one hand it’s a supernatural punishment, invoked to do harm, and it’s also a very old English swear word. Both of these meanings ring true in every sense of the word in relation to Black Spiders. Also, ‘u’ is replaced by ‘v’, ‘five’ in ancient Roman numerals.
From the opening three crashes of the snare on opener “Never Enough” all the way through to the sombre nature of the finale “Rotten to the Core”, there is something for everyone to enjoy. You can feel the energy pumping out of the guitars of Nate Digby, James Evans and Pete Spiby, with their trademark colossal riffs, hooks and solos, and combined with the thumping bass of Adam Irwin and pounding drum sound from Wyatt Wendels, they give it their all.“Cool Reaper” has an anthemic chorus to it, with Spiby’s distinctive vocals ensuring that this will be a crowd pleaser, and it’s in your face from start to finish. This is followed by a groovy rock track called “Sorry Not Sorry” that has a dreamy solo midway through it. This is what rock music is all about, diverse and interesting, whilst being provocative enough to pique people’s interests and the opening to “Idol Hands” is a prime example of how good Black Spiders are, which is followed up by more excellent guitar work that will keep your head bopping along.As Black Spiders are responsible for the fabulously titled ‘KISS tried to kill me’ found on their album ‘Sons of the North’, then we shouldn’t be surprised by ‘Tom Petty’s Lips’ appearing on ‘Cvrses’. It’s upbeat and quick from the start, it will bring the bounce to a live show, especially with a chorus of “Tom Petty’s Lips need to be kissed”. It’s great fun, and has a rip-roaring solo thrown in.In direct contrast – after the interlude “Castille de la roja” – it’s stalked by a traditional rock ballad in the form of “Dia De Muertos” (translates to ‘Day of the Dead’) which is a song worthy of a hold your lighter in the air moment. Once again, you get the band in full rock mode, encompassing all aspects of the genre in a wrapped-up bundle, with “No Superman” flying in to deliver more juicy rock riffs.They are back to their trademark sound with “Go, an adrenaline fuelled song that leaves you unable to pause for breath. A favorite, short and punchy, with a stunning bass line from Irwin, that gives the song real purpose and vigour and feels like you’ve been drinking bottles of Jack Daniels and are in no mood to quit yet.“Up All Night” continues the party atmosphere, with more decadent riffs and hooks, that are spilling over with impressive regularity.Vext the short interlude title track, before “Obey” initially turns everything down several notches ahead of an explosion of sound which will have you jumping around in no time. And if you aren’t shouting the chorus in unison with Spiby, then you have no reason to be listening to this, as it’s unbelievably catchy.Penultimate song “The Mofo Sauce” is another snappy little number which bounces along at a sufficient pace and typifies the band perfectly, before it sadly comes to an end with the aforementioned “Rotten to the Core”, which by the end, will make you sit down and reflect on what you’ve listened to, and realize how enjoyable music can be, and as we celebrate their return there’s only one proper way to rejoice, “F@ck You Black Spiders” (as the band always say themselves).‘Cvrses’ delivers an evolved powerful sound, rich in heavy rock that incorporates a clever medley of characteristics found across genres, an album that reflects Black Spiders progression, successfully completed without the need to put one of their many legs within the mainstream camp.All this is achieved whilst remaining honest to their original roots.
