Titled "Diamond Head", the disc features an exciting new talent in singer Rasmus Bom Andersen.In 2014, DIAMOND HEAD invited London-based, Danish-born Ras to join the band. Together they completed a European tour, which included appearances at Hard Rock Hell and Headbangers Open Air in Germany. The spark of creativity led the band to start working on the new album in January 2015.Brian Tatler, founder of DIAMOND HEAD, said: "When we began talking with Ras about making a new record, he said we should write the songs as a band just like DIAMOND HEAD did at the beginning of our career. There’s no substitute for writing together in the same room. We spark each other off and create something far bigger than we could have done individually."Brian continued: "Ras has certainly renewed the energy within the band. I had no interest in doing another record, but after working with Ras on the European tour, that all suddenly changed. I wanted to make a record with him. The opening and closing songs encapsulate these themes, while the body of the album explores subtopics in more depth, along with songs dealing with lighter subjects that aren't so heavy on the heart.Tatler joined members of METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX at the U.K.'s Sonisphere festival in 2011, performing DIAMOND HEAD's classic song "Am I Evil?" METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich addressed the crowd, saying: "If it wasn't for Brian Tatler, there's a pretty good fucking chance none of us would be here tonight. Would you give it up for Brian Tatler one more time?"Speaking about this event, Brian said: "It was great. A nod towards DIAMOND HEAD to say, 'Respect. You're an important band. You might not have sold millions of records, but you're an influential band.' And it's nice to be influential." Brian continued: "But equally, if it wasn't for METALLICA, then DIAMOND HEAD would not have had this second wind."

There are a few facts that everyone who likes metal knows about Diamond Head, so we won’t go over old ground again.There is also a school of thought that says they are one of the most underrated bands around. That thought was rather re-enforced when I saw them open for Dead Daises last year and was moved to write “And if there was truly any [justice], then Diamond Head wouldn’t be stood here in front of another bands gear playing 40 minutes to a crowd that – to a large extent – doesn’t seem to know who they are.” But I guess we can leave that as personal opinion and conjecture.Here’s a thing that did surprise me.“The Coffin Train” is only their eighth record.Their first for three years, crucially it is their second with Rasmus Bom Andersen. And I know I am making a big call here and I expect that some of the hardcore old guard are going to hate me, but I honestly think he’s the best singer they’ve ever had.His range throughout is incredible. He has become such a big part of the band already, but even more important – perhaps – is that he seems to have invigorated the whole thing.“Diamond Head” – that 2016 record was self-titled – was brilliant. “The Coffin Train” is as good, if not better.It announces itself in particularly strident fashion. Pulling away from the station – as it were – with “Belly Of The Beast” which boasts a riff that is both instantly recognisable and still sounds fresh, while the utterly fabulous “The Messenger” has not only the most metal chorus of 2019 so far: “I am the messenger of death, and I keep a ledger with all of your names……” roars Andersen in a manner that suggests you’d best watch out, but it also allows Brian Tatler announce himself with some wonderful guitar work.The title track adds in some more epic, prog-like influences, and its different shades rather suggest that main-man Tatler is selling himself short when he said: “All along we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose sight of what we call ‘The Brief. I would never want to deny our NWOBHM style and sound, that’s what originally got me excited and Diamond Head noticed. And I still enjoy the creative journey we go on.” The key point here is “the journey” because this is a band with plenty to say still.“Shades Of Black” as the title suggests, is a little darker, a tad more ominous. Karl Wilcox’s drums take centre stage here and form a mighty bedrock. It is, perhaps “The Sleeper” that forms the centrepoint, though. Split into two parts, it has a taste of modern Maiden, perhaps. Unequivocally, though, it is ready to shake the foundations of whichever building it is played in.After that, however, there is a feeling of fun about “Death By Design”, as if everyone just fancied having a good old fashioned gallop and a headbang to shake the cobwebs off. “Serrated Love” is built upon the rumble of the thunderous bass groove Dean Ashton gets, and just sounds like some mighty colossus striding the earth, while the acoustic tinges of “The Phoenix” which work superbly with the crunch of the twin guitars – the presence of Andy Abberley cannot be overlooked – show a band that have always done metal on their own terms.The slow building closer here, “Until We Burn” looks reflectively. “Born to be kings, we were defeated by time” sings Andersen. He then suggests that “Black Country dreams” were lost for a while.But after 43 years, they still burn strong. And, honestly, this isn’t a cliché, but said because I genuinely mean it. Diamond Head have never been better than right now.

Just last month I was reminiscing on classic metal and listening to Diamond Head’s debut offering for the metal legions, Lightning to the Nations. I realized that day that this was one of many genre altering metal albums that came out in 1980, and I compiled my personal Top 10 of 1980 list. At the time, I recall thinking that this album might have been #1 on my list if not for the inherent production and sound limitations and wondering how powerful it might have sounded with a quality modern recording. Well, this month founder and guitarist, Brian Tatler returns with Diamond Head 2.0 for a 40th anniversary re-recording of this iconic album. My prayers may have been answered.With Tatler the only original member, I still wondered though if there were a need or point to remake such a seminal metal record? Vocalist and producer Rasmus Bom Andersen replaced original vocalist Sean Harris in 2014. He and Tatler are joined by longtime drummer Karl Wilcox, bassist Dean Ashton, and guitarist Andy Abberley. Tatler, the band’s primary composer certainly believes a new version is in order:“We thought it’d be great to re-record the debut album with this lineup and the modern technology available. The original album was recorded and mixed in a week, and we were very young; still 19-20 years old when it was recorded, so there’s a lot of that youthful energy. But we didn’t have the technique, time, or craftsmanship to record it with the sort of power that we could now. So that was a real thing to savor: the opportunity to go in the studio and record these songs fresh and vibrant.”Tatler makes a lot of sense, but I admittedly hit play with a mixture of excitement and skepticism. I need not have worried. While much of the rawness of the original is gone, the pure energy is still intact, and as Tatler suggested, the modern technology gives the guitars and rhythm section infinitely more power. Moreover, the album truly stands the test of time, sounding as impactful and important today as it did four decades ago.From the opening riffage of the title cut to the classic metal anthems, “Am I Evil” and “It’s Electric,” I am reminded again of how much this seven-track record altered the landscape of the metal scene at the time of its release. Diamond Head helped establish the NWOBHM movement alongside the likes of Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard. If there had been a Big 4 of that scene, Diamond Head was arguably the equivalent of Metallica in the Big 4 of Thrash. Not surprisingly, Metallica became early fans of Diamond Head, and Lightning to the Nations served as fuel for the band’s early songwriting. They even covered those two aforementioned anthems.When I first fell in love with heavy metal, it began with my love of a great, crunchy guitar riff. One listen to the ripping riff and pumping bassline to the newly redone “It’s Electric,” I am reminded why metal soon became such a dominating musical genre when the original album came out. Andersen’s vocals serve the song and the entire album extremely well and the modern production makes this track even beastlier than one might ever have imagined.“Sweet and Innocent” hits like a roundhouse to the side of the head. Always a cult classic from this record, now it’s got the muscle to knock out some teeth. “The Prince” and “Suck My Love” are revitalized as well, and “Helpless” is a fucking juggernaut of rampaging riffage and menacing aggression.Circling back to my question, should they remake this album, the answer is now a resounding, “Hell yes!” Not only is this a seminal classic brought into the modern era, it sounds in many ways like an entirely new album. I always loved the original version of Lightning to the Nations, but because of its poor production quality, did not often return to listen to it. Had the 1980 debut been less of a DIY affair and not felt a little too thin and raw, this might have made it to #1 on my Top 10 of 1980 list, but this rendition of Lightning to the Nations 2020, as sacrilegious as it may seem, is much stronger and resonates even more for me. This is a record I will return to frequently, and dare I say, 40 years later, Diamond Head have once again released one of the Top 10 albums of the year.If that’s not enough to make your metal heart go pre-order Diamond Head‘s vintage remake, consider this, they have also included four cover songs including Judas Priest‘s “Sinner,” Led Zeppelin‘s “Immigrant Song,” Deep Purple‘s “Rat Bat Blue,” and a completely appropriate take on Metallica’s “No Remorse”.
