Robin Leonard Trower (born 9 March 1945) is an English rock guitarist and vocalist who achieved success with Procol Harum during the 1960s, and then again as the bandleader of his own power trio.Trower was born in Catford, London but grew up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. In 1962, he formed a group that became The Paramounts, later including Westcliff High School pupil Gary Brooker. The Paramounts disbanded in 1966 to pursue individual projects. During this time, Trower created a local three-piece band called the Jam (not to be confused with the later group with Paul Weller). Trower then joined Brooker's new band Procol Harum following the success of their debut single "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in 1967, remaining with them until 1971 and appearing on Procol Harum's first five albums.Before launching his own eponymous band, he joined singer Frankie Miller, ex-Stone the Crows bassist/singer James Dewar, and former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker to form the short-lived combo Jude.This outfit did not record and soon split up.Trower retained Dewar as his bassist, who took on lead vocals as well, and recruited drummer Reg Isidore (later replaced by Bill Lordan) to form the Robin Trower Band in 1973.Perhaps Trower's most famous album is Bridge of Sighs (1974).[citation needed] This album, along with his first and third solo albums, was produced by his former Procol Harum bandmate, organist Matthew Fisher. Despite differences, Trower's early power trio work was noted for Hendrixesque influences.Actually, the two guitarists most likely have influences of blues great Albert King. Trower is an influential guitarist who has inspired other guitar legends such as Robert Fripp, who praised him for his bends and the quality of his sounds, and took lessons from him.In the early 1980s, Trower teamed up with former Cream bassist Jack Bruce and his previous drummers Lordan and Isidore, for two albums, BLT (Bruce, Lordan, Trower) and Truce (Trower, Bruce, Isidore).After those albums, he released another album with James Dewar on vocals titled Back It Up in 1983.Robin Trower was dropped from Chrysalis Records afterwards.In 1991 Trower was also a part of the Night of the Guitars II European tour organised by Sting and The Police manager Miles Copeland. The tour featured Ronnie Montrose, Saga's Ian Crichton, Dave Sharman, Jan Akkerman and Laurie Wisefield.Thirteen albums later, Trower's album, Living Out of Time (2003), features the return of veteran bandmates Dave Bronze on bass, vocalist Davey Pattison (formerly with Ronnie Montrose's band Gamma) and Pete Thompson on drums—the same line-up as the mid 1980s albums Passion and Take What You Need.With the same bandmates Trower gave a concert on his 60th birthday in Bonn, Germany. The concert was recorded by the German television channel WDR. It was then released on DVD and subsequently on CD throughout Europe and later the US under the title Living Out of Time: Live. Trower toured the United States and Canada in the summer and autumn of 2006.In 2007 Trower released a third recording with Jack Bruce, Seven Moons, featuring Gary Husband on drums.A 2008 world tour began in Ft. Pierce, Florida on 16 January 2008. Joining Davey Pattison and Pete Thompson was Glenn Letsch (formerly of Gamma) playing bass. European dates began in April. The show of 29 March 2008 at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Royal Oak, Michigan was released as a double album on V12 Records.As his "big hero" he referenced the early James Brown where blues is crossing over into rock and roll.

Robin Trower is five decades into his professional music career and showing no signs of slowing down. On May 6, the 71-year-old guitarist will release his latest solo effort Where You Are Going To, a 10-track album that continues Trower’s tradition of dispersing sharp moments of intricate guitar work among deeper psychedelic-trending movements. Joined by Chris Taggart on drums and taking care of the guitar, bass and vocals himself, Trower’s Where You Are Going To taps directly into his stream of consciousness, reflective of times of worry, longing, frustration and joy that are alternately simple and complex, but always timeless.Where You Are Going To opens with a repeating hi-hat that pricks the ear before Trower’s soft guitar riff slips in to kick off “When Will the Next Blow Fall.” The song starts slowly, quietly – and by the time the bass and drums join in, Trower’s ready to pick up the pace. The title track follows, a bluesy number that serves as a reminder of the comparisons critics have drawn between Trower’s and Jimi Hendrix’s playing styles since the 1960s. Trower’s voice echoes slightly in “Where You are Going To,” a subtle nod to the lyrical themes of distance and movement. One of the album’s most honest moments appears a few tracks later on “We Will Be Together Someday,” a song Trower wrote for his late wife. “Wide awake, in the dark,” he begins mournfully, leading slowly to the title’s promise: “We will be together someday.” The lyrics evoke loneliness and yearning; the guitar chords are sparse and drive the emotion home.Songwriting aside, this album shows that Trower’s soloing abilities are in peak condition. He jams for nearly a full minute on “The Fruits of Your Desire,” encouraging his listeners to lose themselves in the music (as perhaps he himself does). Where You Are Going To is notable as much for these poignant moments as for its smaller details – the hi-hat in “When Will the Next Blow Fall,” the bass compliments on “Where You Are Going To” – that form the album’s identity. It’s thoughtful and judicious, capable of grabbing its audience with short guitar bursts amid the mellow tempos of most tracks. Throw Trower in with the rest of the blues greats – reflective and respectful of the universal emotions that pester all listeners, Where You Are Going To, simply put, is the blues.

The iconic ROBIN TROWER will be releasing his new studio album, ‘No More Worlds To Conquer,’ on April 29th. Few would dispute that the title of Trower’s latest album – ‘No More Worlds To Conquer’ – is a fair summary of the thumbprint he has left on the musical universe. But as he reminds us, it should not be misinterpreted as his mission being accomplished. “I definitely feel like I’m still reaching,” he considers, “with the guitar, and the songs, and everything else.”Robin Trower has been a leader in the world of rock guitar since his days with 60s hitmakers Procol Harum. His 1974 smash record Bridge of Sighs put him on the map forever and went on to influence monster artists from Steve Lukather to Opeth.Trower has maintained a steady stream of high-value projects since those stadium-filling days including solo albums, his 80s bands BLT and Truce with Cream bassist Jack Bruce, and modern collaborations with the likes of Livingstone Brown and Maxi Priest. He’s one of the finest players out there and any new music from him is cause for celebration.”No More Worlds To Conquer” finds the 76-year-old Trower still pushing himself to his limits and beyond. The new collection of songs are bluesy at heart but rocks with more fire than many self-claimers ‘saviors of rock n’ roll’ out there.Once again, Trower also handles bass duties, but as a lifelong servant of the song over his own ego, he didn’t hesitate to enlist other musicians. “Livingstone Brown played bass on three tracks, and Chris Taggart is on drums,” he explains. “He’s a wonderful drummer, and he’s done the last three or four albums.And I started to realize, after I’d tried to sing these songs myself, that I wasn’t vocally up to it. Richard Watts has done a great job on vocals. He’s got a fantastic instrument – such a soulful singer – and he’s willing to get it exactly how I’m hearing it in my head. The other great thing about having Richard is that there’s quite a few songs on this album that I wouldn’t be able to play and sing live at the same time.”Despite his age, Trower is still reaching for that next meaningful song, solo, or tone that will ignite his creativity and allow him to move into the future with relevance and grace. He found all that and more while writing this new batch of songs during the pandemic, using his never-fail combination of a Stratocaster into a Marshall amp to play and speak on topics ranging from Alexander The Great to the politics and disappointments of modern life.He carves out distinct guitar tones for each song and uses them to help articulate the emotional phrasing he’s long had a gift for, leaving hypnotic trails in his wake.The record jumps off with the cracking “Ball Of Fire,” a crunchy, insistent mid-tempo track that is absolutely drenched in gorgeous Strat tones and Richard Watts’ emotive vocals. Trower’s playing has long had some Hendrix to it but he mixes that inspiration with his own lines and feels to arrive at a style that’s transfixing and expressive. He puts it down here like a blues/rock hero fully connected to the source of his flow.Robin’s title track “No More Worlds To Conquer” was inspired by the story of Alexander The Great and also serves nicely as a summation of Trower’s long and successful career. It’s a sweet slow-burner that lets RT wring everything possible out of each note in an expansive, almost mystical way. Watts’ vocals hang tough with Trower’s tones and his feel is untouchable.“Waiting For The Rain To Fall” drips with a compelling atmosphere that Trower says was influenced by Tamla Motown. His guitar work on it is clear and lyrical and feels like water falling from the sky. No matter where it came from, it’s one of the strongest cuts presented here and deserves your time and attention.“The Razor’s Edge” and “Cloud Across The Sun” are both overtly political lyrically and Trower presents his views without apology. His guitar screams his messages for him and he seems a bit more fired up than normal on these songs. Listen without judgement and you might find some common ground.Other bright spots on No More Worlds To Conquer include “Deadly Kiss” and “I Will Always Be Your Shelter.” Trower still has what it takes to glue your ears to your speakers in anticipation of his next phrase and we all should hope he keeps it forever.He’s a spiritual and musical elder of the guitar music scene now but it’s clear he’s continuing to go hard and prove himself all over again. If you want to know what six decades on top of the game sound like, cue this one up, listen, and learn.
