Bio:

BIG CITY is a Norwegian melodic heavy metal project. The members are between 30 and 47 years old and have tons of experience in the music industry. They have been playing or still play in extreme bands as Satyricon and BloodRedThrone, but also the up and coming prog metal band Withem and many other bands. The reason for Big City is songwriter Daniel Olaisen and his ideas throughout the last 10 years. He wanted to put his 80’s heavy riffs in a band and find suitable people to join him. Bandmate, Frank Ørland, also played with Daniel in Scariot(1999-2005, prog/thrash/heavy band featuring Communic members) and was an obvious choice to bring to Big City. Frank Nordeng Røe (Withem, Marathon, session drummer for Circus Maximus) on drums, was found when searching on internet. The band was completed with Jan Le Brandt on vocals and Geir Inge Olsen on session bass guitar. The debut album, Wintersleep, was recorded and released digitally through Mayhem Music. Some promo CD's were printed by the band and distributed worldwide, but never officially released as an album.Big City never did any live shows, but continued to write material for another album. Miguel Pereira(Withem) was recruited as their new permanent bass player. Meanwhile, german label Rock of Angels wanted to sign the band and release the new album + Wintersleep as bonus on a double CD. This release is expected June 2018 and Big City will perform live for the very first time at Norway Rock Festival July 2018!

Album:

As debuts go this is very promising. When this CD was passed to me at Firefest the gentleman who presented it alluded that the band were low-profile and he wasn't kidding, as information on them is pretty sparse; even down to their nationality, I think they're Norwegian. However, I suspect that with this album they'll be on a lot of people's radar in the near future.Certainly they don't bring anything startlingly new to the Melodic Rock scene, but what they do is tasty enough to get them noticed and I'd put them higher up the ladder than any number of other bands who ply their trade in that particular genre. The scant information on the promo suggests the album has had a three-year gestation period but if that's so they could hone the songs the time has been well spent. Although, if I'm being picky, the similarity in song structures needs some attention as the perception is that they seem to follow a very similar pattern. All the songs are imbued with great riffs, seemingly a band specialty, thanks to guitarists Frank Ørland and Daniel Olaisen whilst vocalist Jan Le Brandt has a strong delivery even if at times he reminds me of Lance (ex of numerous bands including Balance of Power). He can sound a bit strained at times. The band is rounded out by Frank Nordeng Roe (drums) and Geir Inge Olsen (bass). This website uses cookies to help us give you the best experience when you visit. A blistering start is followed by a quiet verse and before the pace picks up again for that infectious chorus. Fast fingered guitar solos are also the order of the day.The title track starts quietly but another great riff soon arrives. 'Fire and Stone' is of the same ilk, slow opening then the big guns kick in for the chorus. 'Too Late' has another strong riff and the staccato guitar playing on this track is rather pleasing. 'Iseline' gallops along, at times on a quick-fire guitar motif. Some cheesy lyrics aside, 'Love Breaks the Heart' is a fine power ballad which will illicit the lighters in the air moment at a gig. The guitar solo is short, sweet and understated, being all the better for it.'Harbor of Tears' (sic) combines a plucked riff with another strummed one to good effect, but again the quite verse structure is deployed. 'Will You Be Gone' closes the album with more fine guitar work.As debuts go this is very promising.

Album:

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the signing of Big City, a melodic rock/metal band from Norway, to a multi-album deal. Fans of bands such as Firewind, Queensrÿche, Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall, Europe, Fair Warning and the likes should look forward to being introduced to this exciting band, that was originally put together by guitarist and songwriter Daniel Olaisen. His plan was to use a vast amount of song ideas and 80s metal influenced guitar riffs that he had stockpiled over the years for a batch of songs with the right players. Frank Ørland, who also played with Daniel in Scariot (a prog/thrash/heavy band featuring Communic and Spiral Architect members), was an obvious choice to bring to Big City as the second guitarist. Frank Nordeng Røe (Withem, Maraton, session drummer for Circus Maximus and Leprous) was brought in on drums after being discovered by Daniel via some internet research. The band was then completed with Jan Le Brandt on vocals and Geir Inge Olsen, who was brought in as a session bass player. The band's debut album, "Wintersleep", was initially released in 2014 and later on rereleased by the Greek label Rock of Angels in 2018 as part of a deluxe edition of their second album, "Big City Life". Big City played their very first live shows the same month of the international release, including Norway Rock Festival and Rock The Boat with Miguel Pereira (Withem) joining the band as their new permanent bass player. In 2019, the band started working on a new album and brought in a new singer, Jørgen Bergersen from Rock The Night (Europe cover band) and the new demos caught the interest of Frontiers who moved swiftly to sign the band."The new album will introduce our new singer. He's done an incredible job and there's more punch and heaviness in his voice. The songs are still varied, from a super chill ballad to heavy and light progressive tunes. Melodies are still in focus and there's plenty of that, as expected. It's simply the best Big City album so far", says Daniel Olaisen.

Line-Up:

Jørgen Bergersen - Vocals
Daniel Olaisen - Guitar
Frank Ørland - Guitar
Frank Nordeng Røe - Drums
Miguel Pereira - Bass

Tracklist:

01. The Rush
02. Dark Rider
03. Testify
04. I Will Fall
05. Running Away
06. Conception
07. Winds Of The Road
08. Heart's Like A Lion
09. Graveyard Love

Album:

Big City's new album "Sunwind Sails". Hailing from Norway, Big City plays exquisite melodic rock with metal influences. 2021's "Testify X" was the first Big City album to feature the band's extremely talented new vocalist, Jørgen Bergersen. He had cut his teeth in a Europe cover band, which will give you a sense of his vocal style, and quickly impressed when singing original material for Big City. On the band's new album "Sundwind Sails", the band takes the formula that was established on preceding releases and kicks everything up a notch, pushing the sound forward and accentuating the members' collective talents.Big City was originally put together by guitarist and songwriter Daniel Olaisen. His plan was to use a vast amount of song ideas and 80s metal influenced guitar riffs that he had stockpiled over the years for a batch of songs with the right players.
