Bio:

Harem Scarem are a Canadian hard rock band from Toronto, ON. Harem Scarem achieved popularity in Japan and their native Canada in the early 1990s. Harem Scarem were originally active from 1987 to 2008 and reformed in 2013. Throughout their career, they released 12 studio albums, plus numerous live and compilation albums.Early years:Harem Scarem was formed in 1987 by guitarist Pete Lesperance and singer Harry Hess, formerly of Blind Vengeance who had recorded one heavy metal album in the late 80's. The lineup was rounded out by Darren Smith (drums) and Mike Gionet (bass). They recorded a demo CD in 1990, which garnered them attention since most demos at the time were released on cassette tape only. On the strength of this demo, they were signed to Warner Music and recorded their first album. This demo CD, which was sold to fans, is long out of print.Commercial Success:In 1991, Harem Scarem released their self titled debut album, which charted at No. 68 on the Canadian album chart. The band scored a hit single from the album; "Slowly Slipping Away", which charted at No. 25 on the Canadian single chart. They also managed to chart two minor hits; "Honestly" and "Love Reaction" The following year, Harem Scarem was able to gain some notoriety when 8 songs from their debut album Harem Scarem were predominantly featured in the Canadian teen series Degrassi Junior High, and Degrassi High's farewell TV movie, School's Out.Harem Scarem released their second album in 1993, Mood Swings, which had a harder sound to it than their previous album. It also featured the recorded vocal debut of drummer Smith on the song "Sentimental Blvd." A fan favorite, Mood Swings charted at No. 83 on the Canadian charts. The album's lead off single was "No Justice", which managed to chart at No. 59 in Canada, while the other two singles failed to chart. Mood Swings caused the band to gain popularity in Japan, and the band's previous album was quickly issued in that country the following year. This was followed by a live and acoustic EP, appropriately titled Live & Acoustic.Short Lived Success:In 1995, the band released their third album Voice of Reason. The album introduced a change in the band's musical style, and was darker in sound than the first two albums. The song "Blue" was released as a promotional single and had a music video for it, however it failed to chart. Bassist Mike Gionet departed after Voice of Reason for personal reasons and was replaced by former Blu Bones member Barry Donaghy. The next two albums, Karma Cleansing (which was released as Believe in Japan) and Big Bang Theory, saw Harem Scarem modernizing their sound. Barry Donaghy also made his lead vocal debut with Harem Scarem on "Sometimes I Wish" from Big Bang Theory. Both the albums and the singles from them again failed to chart. In 1998, the band released their last commercial single "So Blind".Rubber:In 1999, Harem Scarem changed their name to Rubber, and released two albums under that name in Canada. However, they still used the name Harem Scarem in Japan and the rest of the world. Pete Lesperance made his recorded lead vocal debut on the song "Trip" from the self-titled Rubber CD. They made a music video for "Sunshine", which had actors that looked like Jay and Silent Bob, and parodied movies which were released around that time, such as American Pie. The second album under the Rubber name, Ultra Feel, featured their new drummer Creighton Doane (brother of Melanie Doane) replacing Darren Smith. Smith briefly switched to guitar and joined Helix as a touring member. The band soon dropped the Rubber name and switched back to their original name, Harem Scarem.Later Years and Breakup:2002's Weight of the World (released as a Rubber album in some markets) harkened back to the earlier sound of Mood Swings. It was followed in 2003 by Higher. The album's sound was more of a combination of classic melodic rock with a modern production. The album also featured the power ballad "Higher". The year 2003 also saw the release of Harry Hess' debut solo album Just Another Day which was well received by fans. In 2004 Pete Lesperance released his debut solo album Down In It (re-recorded with Mike Turner and released under the band name Fair Ground in 2006).Continuing their prolific output of studio albums, 2005's Overload was followed by Human Nature in 2007. The Japanese version of Overload features a cover of the AC/DC classic, "You Shook Me All Night Long".On July 19, 2007, lead singer Harry Hess announced that Harem Scarem "will make one more studio record, and then after 20 years we have decided to move on to other things". The final album, called Hope, was released July 2008.Post-Breakup...On June 21, 2010 Frontiers Records announced a new studio project called First Signal featuring ex-Harem Scarem members Harry Hess and Darren Smith. The album was released on August 27, 2010.Much of the Harem Scarem back catalogue was reissued in September 2010, featuring bonus tracks. Included in the reissue program are albums formerly only available in Japan, such as B-Side Collection, Rocks, and Ballads. On December 2012 it was announced that a reunited Harem Scarem would headline the 10th Firefest festival in Nottingham UK in October 2013.

Album:

Harem Scarem is the 1991 self-titled debut album by the Canadian hard rock band of the same name. Music videos were shot for the songs; "Slowly Slipping Away", "Honestly", and "With a Little Love". The album charted at No. 68 on the Canadian charts. However two singles from the album, "Honestly" and "Something to Say", were big hits in Indonesia and the Philippines. The album includes guest appearances by fellow Canadian stars such as Ray Coburn of Honeymoon Suite, Carl Dixon of Coney Hatch and Paul MacAusland of Haywire. It also boasted a co-writing credit by award-winning songwriter Christopher Ward of "Black Velvet" fame.I was doing my Bonfire reviews this week and I just thought to myself, “What’s another good melodic hard rock band that is worthy of an archive?” and at the same time I noticed that Harem Scarem have a new album coming out in the not too distant future so I thought, “Hey why not do them?” and put on their debut self titled release and decided to give it a shot. Harem Scarem have gone through many stylistic changes throughout the course of their career, from their 80’s inspired balladesque hard rock found on their debut, to pop leanings with Big Bang Theory and to modern melodic rock with Weight of the World in 2002, one of this reviewers top fifteen albums of that year as well.Listening to Harem Scarem it is hard to see almost how far the band would come in the future. Looking at the quote this is in by no means a bad affair, but compared to what the band will become this is quite a humbling shock. The whole album has a soft feel to it with only about two out and out rocking tracks the rest being slow ballads or slow to midtempo balladesque songs. This is a good disc to put on while wanting to mellow out or just to have some nice music to listen to without too much of a hassle. There are several songs on here that the band still plays live today which is a testament to the strength of the songs here. One of them, the opener and the fastest, Hard to Love, is a classic song for the band in every sense of the word. A great vocal delivery and a nice keyboard beat in the background with some great guitar licks by Pete Lesperance, this is a definite killer. After that strong opener the rest of the album is pretty much a collection of ballads and this surprisingly didn’t disappoint me. Since the album is comprised of mostly ballads the band had to actually write some good well structured ballads instead of some bands that put out ballads seemingly to fill out their cd. The best ones are the slow, piano driven Honestly and the guitar led How Long. With ballads you pretty much know what type of lyrical content that you’re gonna get and as you guessed it, Harem Scarem sing a lot about relationships, both the positive end of things and the negative. Honestly is a lamenting song of lost love that is very emotional. How Long takes the prize of being my personal favorite track off the album however as after a slow intro it kicks into a great verse / chorus pattern, incredibly simple yet incredibly effective. Harry Hess sings tremendously here, as if the events in the song actually happened and this is a cathartic release for him. Speaking of the lyrics, I love them, this band writes songs that you can relate to very easily. Perhaps that is why I love Melodic Hard Rock so much, especially at my age where the things that these types of bands sing about actually happen. While I really enjoy bands such as Rhapsody I know I’ll never run into Aresius on his trip to Hankar to slay the mighty demon wizard with the emerald sword. HAIL!!! You know what I mean? Whereas Rhapsody and the ilk can write lyrics that are good for escapism and fantasy I can’t really sit down and go, “Yea I totally understand where he’s coming from,” but bands like Harem Scarem and Bonfire, when they write songs you can sit down and listen to them or read the lyrics and actually go, “Yea that reminds me of so and so.” All Over Again is one of those songs that makes reminds you of someone or something. It has a more rockish feel to it than the other ballad’s and like I said, is pretty personal, not in the sense that it means so much to me but in the sense that a person can relate to it very easily. None of the songs on Harem Scarem will blow you away with technicality or speed or majestic double harmony solos, instead they are good solid hard rock songs and ballads that you can relate to and sometimes that’s all you need for a great album. If you are a hardcore Power Metal fan and demand fast double kicks, soaring high vocals and songs about fighting for honor, (hey I’m one of those people too yet I love this kind of music) and that’s all you listen to you most likely won’t like this album. If you like midtempo or balladesque songs that deal with human relationships and matters then give Harem Scarem a shot. Another crowd this would appeal to is the ones that never gave up the 80’s. Like I said earlier this album has a strong 80’s feel to it and that’s part of its charm. A very good solid album that glimpses of what is to come. Maybe in the future I’ll review their masterpiece Mood Swings album.

Album:

Mood Swings is a 1993 album by the Canadian hard rock band Harem Scarem. A music video was shot for the song "No Justice".The album charted at No. 85 on the Canadian charts. Most bands have that one benchmark album. You know the one: the album that all others are compared against. Every time the band releases a new album, you usually hear, “Best album since blank!” For Harem Scarem, Mood Swings is that album. Only two records into their long and prolific career, and they already put out their magnum opus.Harem Scarem were (and are) better than the average hard rock band. With Pete Lesperance on guitar, they had a guy who was able to do Nuno-like shreddery. They had two guys — Harry Hess and Darren Smith — who can sing lead. They also had two great backing singers, Lesperance and Mike Gionet. (Darren “DJ” Smith was even the oft-criticized frontman for Jake E. Lee’s solo band Red Dragon Cartel.) Together though, the four guys were able to create Queen-like harmonies that added depth to the music. Fact is, Harem Scarem put out a better album in 1993 than many of the top selling rock records of that year. I saw the band live in early 1992, and they were still doing covers in their set at that time. They really impressed with two unusual covers that showed off their talents: “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Impressive stuff. The prospects for the next album were promising. As if to say “Check THIS shit out,” Lesperance opens the CD with some pretty impressive licks, before diving head first into the riff to “Saviors Never Cry”. (I’m sure Negan agrees with that sentiment.) With the pomp and circumstance of a band trying to expand its horizons, “Saviors Never Cry” provides the thrills & chills. Slight keyboard accents and tricky licks proved that this was not a band of pretty boys, but a group of musicians taking no prisoners. When “No Justice” commences with those layered harmony vocals, your ass will be sore from all the kicking. You can’t find a stronger chorus anywhere, but it’s not wimp rock. As a first single, it drove home the band’s growth since LP #1. Their trajectory was much in line with their American counterparts, Extreme, who were growing album by album.Backwards guitar lulls you in for “Stranger Than Love”, a radio ready track with more of the powerful patented Harem Scarem vocals. Hess looks like a lion with that curly mane of his, and he roars like one too. While songs such as “Stranger Than Love” are completely accessible to anyone, “Change Comes Around” is full throttle. With the speedometer in the red, yet harmonies intact, Harem Scarem blazed the tarmac clean. Unlike their grunge opponents, Harem Scarem focused on the positive in their lyrics. “When all your faith is gone, don’t let it pull you under. Change comes around, sail on to higher ground.” Generic inspirational rock nonsense? Absolutely. Great fun to sing along with? Definitely.Harem Scarem are a diverse rock band, and “Jealousy” is the first change of pace. A sparse arrangement allows the instruments to stand out more, which Lesperance uses to lay down bluesy lick after bluesy lick. It’s not a blues song, but it’s influenced by blues. It was a brilliant side closer, fading out and making way for the lead vocal debut of Darren Smith. The drummer nails “Sentimental Blvd.” He sounds a bit like the late Eric Carr (Kiss) on this pop rocker. Boppy piano provides even more melodic backbone to an already strong song.Lesperance is a talented enough player to earn an instrumental solo track, which is the ballad “Mandy”. A good guitar instrumental should be both melodic and adventurous. It should be memorable, but hopefully the soloist is pushing their own talents. “Mandy” succeeds in both technique and songwriting. It gives way to one of the heaviest album tracks, “Empty Promises”. Without losing their sound or harmonies, Scarem’s “Empty Promises” manages to crack the concrete with a wrecking ball of heavy rock.“If There Was a Time” is one of the most impressive ballads on the album, possessing both darkness and light sides. Once again the harmonies sell it. The musicianship isn’t busy but it’s eloquent just the same. At this point the CD really seems to be building towards a conclusion. The climax is acappella: “Just Like I Planned” is as splendid as it is ingenious. That’s “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” rubbing off on the album, I’ll wager. How many rock bands outside Queen attempt full-length acappella songs? You just need to blow off some steam at the end, and all this builds up to “Had Enough”, a bright track that reeks of Van Halen (or Hagar). It has a great bottom end and some final thrilling chops from Pete Lesperance. This completes the journey of Mood Swings, which is an apt title given the diversity of the songs. Not only are the tunes all great numbers, but the album does have a start, middle and ending. There are sentimental moments, and action packed interludes. It’s more than the sum of its parts, and that’s one reason why Harem Scarem keep having to live up to it.So much so, that they even went as far as re-recording Mood Swings. According to Superdekes, in his review of Mood Swings, “In 2013 Harem wanted to release a 20th anniversary edition of Mood Swings, but their old record company said ‘Nope’. So Harry and Pete said ‘Fuck you’ and re-recorded Mood Swings with three extra new songs.” That’s why today you can look for the original Mood Swings, or the reasonable facsimile and update, Mood Swings II. It is so close to the original in sound and even lead vocals that conspiracy theorists believe that Harry Hess has indeed finally solved time travel. No matter which version you ultimately choose, Mood Swings will continue to reveal new joys every time you play it. If there is such a thing as a perfect hard rock record (smart, memorable, surprising, exemplary) then Mood Swings is one of them.

Album:

HAREM SCAREM is one of my most cherished band ever, and their second album was a triumphal departure from their early sound, to a more refined style, this brilliant and heavier record placed them forever at the Top of my Musical Zenith, no matter what they do or don’t, their evolution wasn’t in everyone taste I know, but I still have a soft spot for those talented Canadians, the announcement that they will re-do “Mood Swings” with three bonus tracks in order to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the album was exciting from a fan boy perspective.HAREM SCAREM's original earth shaking "Mood Swings" belongs to a shortlist of essential immortal albums, rated very up-high in my personal pantheon, this album is featured in a Top 10, which I consider as all-time classics or if you prefer, lifetime's favorites for a desert island trip or something even stronger than that, well, it's a whole part for the soundtrack of my life. This album was very important in my recovery in some of my darkest times, displayed in this troubled (Flannel shirt / Grunge) time, it was a strong sign to keep on fighting and resisting, those tracks holds a real emotional charge, way beyond the simple Rock songs, in those times of confusion, it was like the guiding and the divine warm light, the shining star full of hope at the end of the cold stinky tunnel. And from a detached point of view in analyzing it as a records only, the songs are amazing in every musical departments, not only the music genre was and still is a Deluxe Heavy AOR, highly challenging, ultra melodic, hyper catchy, captivating but it’s a real roller coaster ride, as each and every elements for a good Melodic Hard Rock disc is present, in a sheer quality and also in an impressive amount of quantity. If you don't know this album yet then you should better run for it, if you already knew it, and if don't value it as good as me, then you must starts again from scratch there is something that you are losing, but if like me, you adore this disc, you should expect something to read about this new re-recording rendition, ok so let's go.With such extraordinary expectations that were really up in the sky, I was a little ecstatic but also kind of anguished when I placed for the first time the little silver platter onto my CD player, indeed the risk was to be disappointed or disillusioned by a new recording of such a beautiful album, I was under a kind of stage fright when I pushed the button for my first encounter, with the re-making package of “Mood Swings II”.Since the very beginning of the legendary “Saviors Never Cry”, I was at ease immediately, because the sound was heavenly perfect and the interpretation was flawless and faithful to the original record, with a few little variations but only in the mixing, that result in a discovery of new tiny details such as a richest keyboards sounds and even richer vocal harmonies, updated in every sense. I wasn’t expecting something as achieved at this level and so wining even in my wildest dreams. The sonic side of the disc is clearly referencing to the initial recording with a more modern approach containing less reverb FX and a little more clarity without falling in the trap to be too clinical, they succeed in this process of capturing the vibe and improved it while staying true to the main spirit of that era. The playing is stellar but with such a crew of experienced studio musicians, armed with 20+ years of recording knowledge, it’s not really surprising, but even more difficult, they also managed to recreate the same audacious juvenile essence and the mood swings from the early studio sessions. The famous “No Justice” song, even better in this perfect restitution, with his amazing legendary lead-guitar solo played in the most immaculate way by a full potency of Pete Lesperance, thank God. Honestly, his performances came into a glorious terrific ground, focused like the first time around, objectively this effort should be a valuable experience for fans as the translation of 99% of the material is accurate and loyal to the 1993’s release by Warner Bros.”Stranger Than Love” and its DEF LEPPARD chorus and its violent reversed riff is still one of my best example, of how 'Harmonized gang vocals' should be , breaking the rules and setting the new standard that even Mutt Lange himself can’t beat, as always the Harry Hess performance is superb. The fourth track is one of my favourite cut here , the kick-ass muted riffing with false tapped harmonics, in the fluid Steve Vai's fashion guitar-style with another huge lead spot , and what about those dark verses that were so modern back then? Unbelievable, this was visionary. And all of a sudden the chorus with a few magical low harmonies parts is overwhelming and very contagious. This is the perfect sing-along anthemic theme, the final section with the ad-lib refrain, in an Epic slower arrangement mode, yet still highly harmonized in the QUEEN's tradition this is one of the strongest bench mark for both Mood Swings versions, ”Change Comes Around” indeed. The groovy funky intro for “Jelousy” is still efficient and the raspy voice of Harry Hess is still working utterly well, what a song. With such a commercial appeal, a real classic Rock hit-single potential (virtually) in the making. “Sentimental Boulevard” holds a special place in my heart, the particularity is that the lead-vocals are performed by drummer Darren Smith, with a fantastic Stadium melodies in the pure style of NIGHTRANGER and a genuine, skilled staccato solo very much like Ronnie LeTekro (TNT) enhanced with the traditional top-notch backing vocals gang like THE BEATLES meets KISS. ”Mandy” is a short solo instrumental filled with a fat melodic overdrive lead-guitar and some discreet layers of synths that reminds me, Joe Satriani’s fluidity combined with a few Brian May hot licks, still astonished by this beautiful piece even twenty years after the release. “Empty Promises” is a song that could be considered as the little sister of “Changes Comes Around” here, with a big challenge to retrieve the early energy in the vocal approach, another time an immense wall of voices, perfectly matching in an impressive harmonic ensemble, the middle break is some of the most majestic bridge and a great prelude, for again, a perfect 6 strings piece of melody. The progressive track of the album “If There Was A Time” starts with a soft piano introduction, that leads to another incredibly fine and clever almost, radio friendly Pop refrain pushed by a choral yelling doubling in the craziest fabulous way embellished with great synthetized strings and a short but smoking picking piece of electric guitar, five minutes of pure delight. “Just Like I Planned” is the real ballad of the album, an almost Acapella tune with a strong Rhythm and Blues feel, mostly because of its church choir and improved by a brand new acoustic Guitar / Piano arrangement, think Freddie Mercury meets THE TEMPTATIONS. “Had Enough” Another original and hyper technical riff driven song, that reminds me of Michael Firkins lost under a odd time pattern, tasty guitar tone and huge playing, the second part of the song is more direct and more focused on the chorus, another proof that HAREM SCAREM doesn’t belongs to the bands that play safe, I believe that the modern technology was helpful to preserve the awesome pristine ambiance. The first new song “World Gone To Pieces” is heavily orchestrated and doesn’t really sounds exactly as a “Mood Swings” lost gem, because of its more contemporary sounding flavor, with some influences from NICKELBACK melted with another strong LEPPARDian choir , that could had been featured in the 2002 “Weight Of The World” album easily, nice song anyway.“Anarchy” is the second of the new bunch of songs special composed for this “Mood Swings II” and it really fits like a glove stylistically speaking, with a real 90s feel, a luxury of details in the structure and a pure genius refrain , somewhere between W.E.T. and HAREM SCAREM's, very own, “Voice Of Reason” era, splendid. “A Brighter Day” is the closing track, also a brand new number, with a real Pop sensibility, not really far from the music displayed in the latest Harry Hess “Living In Yesterday” of 2012, boosted by the fine addition of some spectacular guitar parts from Pete Lesperance, a cohesive triptych to close this wonderful and entertaining release. Even if the band isn’t reforming for real, they will do a short tour to promote this album that wasn’t properly worked back in the days, so I can’t wait to see my heroes, performing the entire tracklist at October's FIREFEST in Nottingham and also headlining the German’s H.E.A.T. fest in November. If you don't know this album yet then you should buy it, if you already have it, and if don't value it as much as me, then you must starts again from scratch, there is obviously something that you are losing. But if like me, you adored the first published disc then you should grab this another time.I tried to rate it 11 out of 10, so go figure… This is the best in the Nostalgic mania wave by far, a timeless classic that should be in every serious music fan collection.

Album:

"Live At The Phoenix" is the new 2CD/DVD release by HAREM SCAREM, the first proper live album recorded by the band in front of their 'home' audience. Published by Frontiers Music, the recording will be available as well in Blu-ray and Digital formats since tomorrow, December 4.Recorded live on Saturday July 11th, 2015 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, this happened to be the perfect time and venue for the band to capture live recordings of numerous songs from their latest record 'Thirteen' and also to revisit their classic early material. It was a honest and potent performance showcasing the repertoire of a band which is at the top of their game."Live At The Phoenix" does exactly what it needs to - and what you want to: rocks.Firstly, it provides an update of what the band currently does in the live setting as it's been about seven years since their live offering and secondly, it acts as a good introduction to the band. They really do have some top quality songs which probably deserve much wider recognition ("No Justice", "Slowly Slipping Away", and "Sentimental Blvd." are all essential listening). This isn't the 'livest' of live records you will ever hear (all is really polished) although the slightly manic introduction is quite funny, but it is a great place to introduce yourself to a band who have consistently produce high quality melodic rock.If you are already of these mighty Canadians, just enjoy these great tunes refreshed and updated 2015 delivered in a vibrant performance.

Album:

Frontiers Music Srl will release HAREM SCAREM's fourteenth studio album, "United", on May 12. The disc offers up eleven tracks of trademark HAREM SCAREM music from Harry Hess (lead vocals, keyboards), Pete Lesperance (guitars, bass, keyboards), longtime drummer Creighton Doane, and backing vocals from original sticksman and current RED DRAGON CARTEL singerDarren Smith (who will be playing live drums for the band on tour dates).Frontman Harry Hess says: "This year will mark the thirtieth year of HAREM SCAREM and I can tell you that we are just as excited about writing and recording today as we were then. The brand new 'United' album is one of the best collection of songs we have ever put on one release and I can't wait for everyone to hear it!"HAREM SCAREM make it clear they still have something to say right from the start with the title track, "United", a chunky slice of guitar-driven melodic rock nirvana that kicks off their strongest studio outing since the early 2000s. From there, the album lifts off with well-crafted songs featuring big choruses with simple and addictive hook-laden earworms. Each track carries a power-rock-packed punch, swaggering riffs, and hooks to die for. Hess and Lesperance without a doubt show the world that their partnership still works, that they indeed are still "united."With sales of well over a million records in forty-three countries and twelve Top 40 hits around the globe, HAREM SCAREM has returned and is ready to dominate while touring the world in support of "United".

Album:

When a discussion arises on who are the current heavyweights of the melodic rock scene, the list of names being bantered about cannot avoid a mentioning of Harem Scarem. And certainly for good reason. After a five year hiatus, in 2013 the band reunited to rerecord from scratch its milestone release “Mood Swings”. Since then, Harem Scarem has consistently released high quality albums, with “Thirteen” and “United” being shining examples where the band showcases its amazing trademark sound and at the same time, offers a stylistic progression which makes Harem Scarem a band to point to for the evolution of the genre. The new record, “Change The World”, is a logical next step for Harem Scarem. While it isn't a million miles from where “United" left off, it still shows a band at the top of its game. A cohesive unit still able to deliver a power rock packed punch, swaggering riffs and hooks to die for. Harry Hess and Pete Lesperance show the world that their partnership still works, without any doubt."We really only have one goal when we start working on a record and that is to try and write the best songs we can,” tells Lesperance. "In the beginning, Harry and I work individually on parts and then bring them together to see if we have a good starting point for some songs. I think we've finally found our stride (I should hope so after 30 years of being a band) and we just try to keep ourselves happy musically, but deliver something that we feel the fans will like!" With the addition of Mike Vassos on bass, Harem Scarem is returning and ready to dominate. See the band live over in Europe in the summer 2020!
