Bio:

HARLOT started out under the name V.A.M.P. in 1986 where they went through a few lineup changes and wrote an album’s worth of songs. In 1988, the band gained interest from Atlantic Records, but Atlantic Records already had a melodic hard rock band called VAMP and told the band if they wanted to have a better chance of signing a deal, they should change their name. The band complied and changed their name to HARLOT. Even though this move never secured the deal with Atlantic, it did show the band’s dedication to wanting to make it at the next level. The band gained a large following in their hometown, Salt Lake City, Utah, and also in surrounding states. HARLOT recorded several songs written in the V.A.M.P. days and released them as a three-track cassette under the name HARLOT. The band was on a great course, but some creative differences began to present themselves, causing a divide among the members of the band. In the early part of 1992, guitarist Kurt Johnson (DOGS DAY, PEDESTRIANS, PHRANQ, ASPHALT JUNGLE, DOWNFALL, AERIAL, CHRISTMAS JAM) and his wife, keyboardist Joanna Johnson (CHRISTMAS JAM) departed from the band.Bassist Mark Morrison (THE JACK, VICE) wanted to take the band in a slightly different direction by eliminating keyboards to focus exclusively on guitar-driven melodic hard rock with a sleazy blues vibe. Mark wanted to bring in two guitarists and vocalist Larry Dee (FAST FORWARD, ROCK ‘N’ STEELE, BONE, NETWORK) and drummer Dan Medley (HOMESTEAD, THE TAKE) were both in agreement. The band held auditions at local club Rafters where HARLOT was the house band alongside HARD KNOX. Guitarist Jimmy Goble tried out and got the job.The band played for a few months as a four-piece but wanted to add another guitarist. In the summer of 1992, the band brought in Baldy “Gypsy” Mendez (KICKARR, THE PEDESTRIANS, TYPHOID MARY, SHADOW, CABRIDE). Baldy had just left the band THE PEDESTRIANS (soon changed to DOGS DAY) who recruited previous HARLOT guitarist Kurt Johnson after the departure of Baldy. With Baldy now in the HARLOT lineup, he gave the band a new edge as well as great backing vocals as he had spent time as a lead vocalist in one of his previous bands, TYPHOID MARY, where he shared guitar duties with Chris Clary (STRYDER, ESSEXX, MEGATTACK, BAD BOYS, FATLIP, CHERRY BOMB). Right after adding Baldy to the ranks, the band received short notice that they were going to be opening for REO SPEEDWAGON at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Salt Lake City. This gave Baldy only ten days to get up to speed on the HARLOT songs for the show. Despite only four rehearsals under their belt as a five-piece, the show was a major success and the band knew they picked the right guitarist to help take the band to the next level. The band entered Audio Vision Studio to record a three-track cassette consisting of two newly written songs, “Let ‘Em Ride” and “Handful of Hell,” along with a song that Baldy had written in his previous band, TYPHOID MARY, called “Kiss Kiss.” This cassette would not be commercially released as HARLOT continued to focus on live shows. The band would write new music and work the material into their live sets.HARLOT was awarded “Best Metal Artist” of 1991–1992 by Private Eye (a bi-weekly newspaper), the second year in a row that the band won the award which gave them the chance to play the Zephyr Club, a conservative venue that typically only brought in national acts. The band was known for having a high energy and sometimes over the top stage show. Larry would always play to the crowd and have them eating out of the palm of his hand. Mark would break beer bottles over his head on stage, but never missed a note; this got the crowed amped up. Baldy captivated the crowd with his blistering guitar licks and intense gaze that had the crowed wanting more and more. Dan was intense on the drums and could cause a thunderous beat that would get the crowed moving, so much that his blasting beats caused some PTSD with an army vet who went into combat mode due to flashbacks caused by the pounding drums. The club actually had to be cleared for the safety of everyone. Help was called in and once the situation was under control, the music continued. It was around this time that Jimmy departed from the band due to conflicting obligations at home that needed his attention. The band would continue as a four-piece. Several more songs were coming together including the song “All the Angels Cry” which was written by the band to remember their loved ones that had passed away. The band would enter Audio Vision Studio once again, this time to record eight songs. The album was originally funded by a third party and though the band now had eleven songs for the upcoming album, only nine of them were chosen for the cassette release. The original artwork for the album was done by none other than Mark’s old bandmate from VICE, guitarist Jay Gough (OBSESSION, DARK HAVEN, MEGATTACK, RAG DOLLS, ESP). The cassette was released on June 1, 1993, at the band’s release party held at Rafters. The album was very well received by the fans, but at this point the music industry was changing and melodic hard rock bands were no longer being signed to major labels with the grunge wave taking over the radio stations. It was around this time that country artist Chris LeDoux reached out to the band and inquired on buying the rights to their song “Legends.” The band decided to keep the publishing rights, but Chris would still play the song live.HARLOT continued to draw great crowds and create a fun and entertaining atmosphere. The band, however, eventually found themselves in trouble with the law as they were summoned to court to answer charges related to a fan’s drunk driving incident that tragically took the life of a member of the other vehicle. Nobody from the band was involved in the accident but the drunk driver placed blame on the band for encouraging people to drink. The band did what was referred to as “Sociables” (raising glasses for the crowd to take a drink as the band would all take a drink on stage). Larry represented the band in court and the charges were ultimately dismissed. In 1995, Dan Medley left the band to pursue other endeavors including a great career in photography. Dan was replaced by Anthony Payzant, but this new rendition of the band did not last long. The band ended up calling it quits before the end of 1995. Though the music scene changed and each member moved on to other interests and career paths, there was still a bond created in HARLOT that continued, because legends never die.The band was asked to do a reunion show in the year 2000 called “Gratuitous Sex, Violence… and Guitar Solos”, where they would be sharing the stage that night with the all-female band PHANTOM BLUE. The band got back together and rehearsed for the show. All the preparations were being put into place for a killer gig. Larry just had to get his bar-card renewed in order to play the show. Unfortunately, he was about fifteen minutes too late and was unable to get the renewal. The band went on anyway and kicked off the show. The band sounded as good as ever as the crowd was getting pumped. Shortly after HARLOT got into their third song, the concert was stopped by the police due to frontman Larry Dee not having a current bar-card. What a way to go out. No one was sure what they were going to see or experience at a HARLOT show, but they were guaranteed to hear great music and make fun memories at their over-the-top shows.

Album:

U.S. Melodic Hard Rock / Hair Metal originally released in 1989.Harlot started out under the name “V.A.M.P.”, but due to interest from Atlantic records and being told that they already had a recording artist under the name “VAMP”, the band changed their name to “Harlot”. The band had recorded an album worth of songs under the previous name, but a lineup change caused those songs to be shelved. The new lineup consisted of bassist Mark Morrison (The Jack, Vice), vocalist Larry Dee (Network), drummer Dan Medley (The Take), guitarist Baldy Mendez (The Pedestrians, Typhoid Marry) and guitarist Jimmy Goble. The band quicky became favorites in the Salt Lake City music circuit and would pack the venues for their high energy live shows. The band had acts such as Firehouse and Hard Knox open for them during this time. The band entered the studio in 1993 to record the album “Positively Downtown”. The album was released on cassette and was later bootlegged on CD-R (this CD-R was not sanctioned by the band and was even unknown to them until recent years). Metallic Blue Records have completely remastered both albums with updated artwork and bonus tracks. Harlot – Positively Downtown will appeal to fans of Poison, Kik Tracee and Roxx Gang.

Album:

While HARLOT was pretty close to signing a deal with major label Atlantic at the end of the 80s, however good luck wasn’t by their side. The band managed to record an album in the early ’90s, released by themselves on cassette. Now the original tapes have been remastered and “Positively Downtown” is being officially released on CD for the first time today, with the addition of two previously unreleased tracks and refreshed artwork. This is well written & recorded classic late ’80s melodic hard rock / hair metal plenty of catchy melodies, melodic vocals and sweet riffs, kinda Poison meets Babylon A.D.

Bio:

Kurt Johnson (DOGS DAY, PEDESTRIANS, PHRANQ, ASPHALT JUNGLE, DOWNFALL, AERIAL, CHRISTMAS JAM) was a young guitarist who had one thing on his mind—playing guitar. But one day all of that changed as Kurt was set up by a friend on a blind date with another aspiring musician from a rival high school. Kurt took out Joanna Madson (CHRISTMAS JAM) and it was love at first sight. Everyone was shocked that when they saw Kurt, it was often not a guitar on his arm, but a beautiful young woman. Both of them were in love with music and one another. Both spent their teenage days playing music, Kurt on guitar and Joanna on piano and keyboards. It didn’t take long after graduating for the couple to tie the knot. In the spring of 1986, both Kurt and Joanna wanted to start a band together as they continued to share their passion of music. A friend of theirs named Trevor Hildebrant (BAD CIRCLE) introduced them to Larry Dee (FAST FORWARD, ROCK ‘N’ STEELE, BONE, NETWORK) a dynamic vocalist and frontman who just completed a west coast mini-tour with the band NETWORK. The three members met to decide what direction to take their new band. They quickly decided to embrace the glam metal image with catchy radio-friendly songs. The trio also decided to go by the name VISUAL ARTS METAL PROJECT or V.A.M.P. With a name and a desired sound determined, it was time to look for a drummer and bassist to round out the band. In the later part of 1986, they recruited Craig Carlisle (OBSESSION) on drums. The band continued to look for a bassist and in the early part of 1987 they added Tom Askee to play bass. The band started out by rehearsing a good set of cover songs including songs from WHITESNAKE, BAD COMPANY, NAZARETH, and FOGHAT. The band also worked on a few originals, including “Ready to Rock” and “Vampire.” V.A.M.P. played their first real gig at the club, “The Barbwire,” opening for local act DIZZY BITCH. They immediately started to gain fans and local praise.V.A.M.P. soon saw the departure of Craig and quickly hunted for a new drummer. The band came in contact with seasoned drummer Dan Medley (HOMESTEAD) through their mutual friend Bert White (ANGLE, PEDESTRIANS, INDECENT EXPOSURE, VICE). Dan had just departed from the band THE TAKE and returned to Utah from California. Dan was given a demo-tape of cover songs to learn for the tryout. Dan had never done covers before. This new take on playing pushed Dan’s own skills to another level as he incorporated more styles into his playing. Dan quickly impressed the band and was added to the ranks. V.A.M.P. started to play more shows and expanded their network by playing in surrounding states such as Idaho and Wyoming. This new touring regimen started to take a toll on Tom and the band had to continue to accommodate him by moving shows and small tours. V.A.M.P. played a packed show at Reggie’s Rockin’ R club in Murray, Utah. It was on this night that the band caught the attention of bassist Mark Morrison (THE JACK, VICE). Mark approached Larry and Dan and told them to fire Tom and that he would be their new bassist. Larry did just that. Tom however convinced Kurt to let him back in the band as they were next door neighbors. This however didn’t last long and Larry had the pleasure of firing Tom once again. Mark was quickly brought in to take over bass duties. With the new lineup, the band began to focus on writing more original songs.Once V.A.M.P. had an album full of songs written, they gained the attention of Atlantic Records. Atlantic was interested in the band but told them that they would not sign them due to the fact that they had just signed a recording band under the name VAMP. In response, the band brainstormed a new band name. Mark mentioned that he had always liked his friend Tracy Swider’s (AZRO, KIDD BLAST, REIGN DIVINE, MEGATTACK, FATLIP, DFM, HATETIMESNINE) old band’s name called HARLOTT. Mark reached out to Tracy to see if he would be okay if they adopted the band name and Tracy was good with it. They decided to drop the last “T” to just call themselves “HARLOT.” So V.A.M.P. officially changed the name of the band to HARLOT in February of 1988. It didn’t take long for the fans to adjust to the band’s new name. HARLOT quickly gained in popularity as they continued to play live and pack the clubs. Now 1989, the band would enter Audio Vision Studios under the name HARLOT and record a handful of songs, including “Ready to Rock,” “Vampire,” and “Full Time Trouble.” A few months later the band went back into the studio, this time at LA East Studios to record their first official three-track release on cassette. The release included the songs “Telephone Love Affair,” “Addicted,” and a song that Mark had written with Rick Jackson (WIZARD, SLYDER, MANNEQUIN, MEGATTACK, ASPHALT JUNGLE) and Kim “Blue” Adams, his old bandmates from “THE JACK,” called “I Heard You Cryin’.” The band would enter LA East Studios again and record the songs “Civil War” and “Don’t Do It.” Though all the songs were recorded under the name HARLOT, these were all written and first performed when they were called V.A.M.P.The band loved their fans and tried to play out as much as possible. They booked so many shows that on some nights they pulled double-duty. One of these such nights was on December 31, 1989 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum in Salt Lake City, where they opened up for BOUDREAUX and then had to rush over to the club Rafters to play a show with SLAUGHTER. HARLOT played with many bands over the latter part of the 1980s and the early part of the 1990s, opening for such bands as DIRTY LOOKS, SAVATAGE, EYES, DORO, TNT, BABYLON A.D., WILDSIDE, XYZ, SHOTGUN MESSIAH, and many more.HARLOT released a three track self-titled cassette in 1990 that was very well received by their fans and inched the band closer to securing a record deal. At the beginning of 1991 the band was invited to Hawaii to do a series of shows over a three-week period. The band was very well received by the crowd in Hawaii. As the band returned to Salt Lake City, Larry was detained at the Las Vegas airport by security due to his make-shift belt buckle being a pair of handcuffs, his trademark style on stage. Larry had to ship the handcuffs home, but in doing so missed his flight. Larry caught a flight the next day and had to quickly get to the club Rafters as the band had a headlining show with FIREHOUSE as the opener.HARLOT gained a lot of local notoriety and praise and were even awarded as Utah’s best Metal band for 1990–1991 by Private Eye (a bi-weekly newspaper). But it was at this time that there was a divide in the band and creative differences led to the departure of both Kurt and Joanna. HARLOT would go on to bring in two guitar players and release a full-length cassette, “Positively Downtown,” which would be well circulated. Kurt went on to other projects including DONGS DAY, ASPHALT JUNGLE, DOWNFALL and AEIRAL, but it was their band CHRISTMAS JAM, formed with their two kids, that brought Kurt and Joanna immense joy as a family project. Joanna went on to acquire two master’s degrees and became a neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Kurt opened his own recording studio (Soundwave Recording Studio) where he stays quite busy recording many great artists, including his own son Randy Johnson (STORMHAVEN, AERIAL).The band looks back on their time as both V.A.M.P. and HARLOT as a fun journey where they made good memories. Some of the members are just grateful that they lived through it all. The band is proud of all the recordings and the opportunity to have so many great fans.

Album:

The Utah-based band V.A.M.P.. (which stands for Visual Arts Metal Project) began in the mid-80s as a pure cover band (Whitesnake, Bad Company) and then developed during the songwriting process away from glam rock towards the more commercial hair metal and poser rock of the Kix, Flame or Babylon A.D. brand. Known for their live performances, the band also aroused the interest of Atlantic Records, who considered signing the band if they changed their name. But after the name change nothing happened on the part of the label and the band operated under the name Harlot from then on. The original V.A.M.P. songs are now available on CD for the first time.
