La Paz were formed in Lanarkshire, Scotland in the early 1980's when Doogie met Chic McSherry. They'd been playing in the local music scene for a number of years and had run across each other often enough but the time hadn't been right to work together until then.They hit it off immediately on a personal level, they liked the same music and they had the same influences and heroes (Purple, Rainbow, Journey, Gary Moore) so they started to recruit other members to try to form a band and go do some gigs. They decided to add keyboards right away as, at that time, the "classic" guitar/keys combination had declined from favour and it would immediately make them different from the other all-guitar bands that dominated the circuit at that time.The final line-up was Doogie White (Vocals), Chic McSherry (Guitar), Alex Carmichael (Bass), Andy Mason (Keys) and Paul McManus (Drums) and they went on to considerable acclaim in Scotland and beyond. They were featured regularly in Kerrang and showcased in the world-famous Marquee Club in London. A deal was secured but then, as often happens in the music business, the deal stalled and eventually fell through.Now they are back together and recording again with a new record deal thorugh Metal Mind Productions, Poland. They play selected gigs in the UK when time allows in Doogie's busy schedule and it is as much fun as it ever was.

Album:

A fine album that delivers great songs.Rather disingenuously of me when this promo arrived I had it in my head that Doogie White had a "vocalists for hire" reputation, which was soon dispelled checking his CV. I suspect that my view had more to do with the people he's worked with (including Yngwie Malmsteen and Ritchie Blackmore) than himself.This, his debut solo album will, I suspect, go down as one of the best Hard Rock releases of 2011 and will certainly be a contender for my end of year favourites in that particular genre. There's nothing new here but who cares when the songs and performances are this good?Right off the bat Doogie sets the bar very high with 'Come Taste the Band', the title of which is no coincidence. Originally an audition piece for the job with Blackmore's Rainbow it was deliberately given the name of a Deep Purple album that didn't feature the man in black. The keyboard and organ intro (courtesy of Tony Carey) is pure Rainbow, as are the drums when they kick in. Patti Russo (Meatloaf) duets on this one and adds an extra flavour to the sound which romps along very nicely. I defy anyone not to like this song and not have it lodge in their brain after just one listen.This website uses cookies to help us give you the best experience when you visit. To find out more about the cookies we use and how to delete them, see our Privacy Statement.With the likes of Pontus Norgren (Hammerfall, The Poodles), Neil Murray (Whitesnake et al), Paul Logue (Eden's Curse) and Carey (Rainbow) it will be no surprise that the performances are great and having Logue, Norgren and Alex Dickson (Gun, Bruce Dickinson, Robbie Williams) helping with the songwriting means the tunes are top notch. 'Time Machine' has an AC/DC vibe, albeit with Biff Byford (Saxon) on vocals, indeed Doogie at times is similar to Byford but he's no one trick pony in that regard. 'Dreams Lie Down and Die' is probably my favourite song on the album with a great melody, superb chorus, terrific arrangement and a delivery from Doogie that is simply wonderful with a tinge of the late, great RJD in the phrasing.'Lonely' will have the headbangers and air guitarists in seventh heaven, while the following 'Land of the Deceiver' has a great bridge and chorus with some tremendous guitar solos and rollicking bass from Murray. 'Secret Jesus' has a different feel to what's gone before and again I love the bridge; it has a touch of Whitesnake to it not least on the second bridge. 'Sea of Emotion' takes the pace down with its lighters in the air opening whilst 'Catz Got Yer Tongue' recalls Saxon once more and for me it's the weakest song on the album as it comes across as being rather generic and contrived. Quality control is resumed with 'Living on the Cheap' that has Thunder overtones, particularly on the chorus. The album closes with 'Times Like These' with its fantastic swagger which I find it impossible not to move to.

With this guy called Doogie White, you are about to experience a hell of a tumult as his career is a real Scottish hullabaloo. I first noticed him as the singer in the good band MIDNIGHT BLUE (album: "Take The Money And Run") thru the mighty Japanese label ZERO Corp. (RIP)-this album was reissues in early 2012 by YesterRock with a new cover art and 2 additional track. He was also performing alongside with Udo Dirkschneider for Alex Parche’s solo album "Prohibido El Paso". CHAIN (album: "Eros of Love and Destruction" ) was also pretty good , it was just after the big break… I truly mean the big break, in 1995 Mr Doogie White was fronted nothing more than the legendary RAINBOW for a world tour and one of my preferred Ritchie Blackmore‘s album ever , the very underrated "Stranger In Us All".Since then, Mr. white became an honorable member of the PURPLE Familly congregation and as Joe Lynn Turner, Glenn Hughes orDon Airey, he found his way by playing the hired gun in a lot of tribute / Solo album and project! Most are quality stuff but some are outstanding as Nikolo Kotzev's NOSTRADAMEUS (with Goran Edman / Jorn Lande / Glenn Hughes) or "Once and Future King" by Gary Hughes (TEN). His name was evoked & rumored as lead singer for Pink Cream 69 / ROYAL HUNT and even IRON MAIDEN. The big bull eye hit was once again, when he became YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN's RISING FORCE new vocalist (albums "Attack" + "Unleash The Fury"), and even if those albums are far from being the high caliber music that we could expected by the mighty Swedish Maestro, it brings to him enough fame & prestige to enlighten his career pursuit.CORNERSTONE was a fine new project formed with Steen Morgensen (ex-ROYAL HUNT) in more mellow Scandi-AOR way 5 albums were released… At that time, the big turmoil is starting once again he contributes to a batch of recording like: PRAYING MANTIS / THE RING / EMPIRE / EDEN's CURSE / VODOO CIRCLE / SEBASTIEN / RATA BLANCA / CANDELMASS / Iain Ashley Hersey Doogie once more break the routine by recording an exceptional album with once legendary NWOBHM act TANK, while nobody's expected nothing at all, the album "War Machine" established once again his status as an important & influential vocalist, but also set ,the new incarnation of TANK , as a future force to watch: it’s also start a new collaboration with polish label Metal Mind and quite logically his first solo album saw the light of day with a great guest-list but finally a little disappointing result.His first solo work is now quickly followed by this on-hold late school band era 1984/88, both project are in the same way traditional British Classic Hard Rock not really interesting and far from innovative. I think the fans of Classic Rock, could found some interest here, but I think DEMON’S EYE or KRUK were already better at this game, and we could also ask for a better sounding recording. From time to time, you had a short hope for something more progressive or cleverer in term of songwriting, but soon you’ll realize that this band was made to play live, and the sterile-studio-background, isn’t the right place for those Scottish Rockers. Don’t get me wrong, it's not a bad album, but Doogie White is the only attraction as both the songwriting and the players are average… For completists only!

Slowly becoming a household name amongst the classic metal sect, Scottish wailer Doogie White has been found front and center for heritage acts such as RAINBOW, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCE, TANK and most recently, Michael Schenker. White has helmed other acts such as CORNERSTONE, EMPIRE and MIDNIGHT BLUE, laid down solo pieces and contributed session work to Ian Paice and the late Jon Lord. Thus it would appear this is a man whose laurels seldom get rested.LA PAZ is another one of White's affiliates and now on the band's second album, "The Dark and the Light", they continue to ride the rails of a hard rock nostalgia train that caters largely to old-schoolers. For others, "The Dark and the Light" will perhaps come off as merely pedestrian.Kickback tunes such as "Little Black Book of Songs", "Old Habits Die Hard" and "The Good Old Days" open up Doogie White's propensity to reminisce. Those who come from his walk of life are bound to pop open a longneck and pine along with him. The affectation of these tracks depends upon a certain demographic, albeit the DEEP PURPLE-kicked kink behind "Old Habits Die Hard" stands to appeal to tail chasers of any age bracket.On the flipside, more power metal-oriented songs such as "Devil in Disguise" and the slower-dealing though intricate "Men of War" are grabbers for any metal purists. "The Dark and the Light" also boasts a pair of flamboyant instrumental interludes, a fugue organ solo from Andy Mason, "De la Luz" and the somber finale, "The Fallen".The main tone LA PAZ projects on this album, however, is straightforward blues rock. What they do is agreeable if not earth-shattering. "Don't Drink With the Devil" attempts to be calamitous but falls a click shy, while the intended sexuality slithering behind "Burlesque" is barely lascivious enough to make the grade. "Shadow of Romance" shambles instead of struts, while "Sweet Little Mistreated" kicks the groove up a notch, but only to slight favor.Doogie White frequently chimes like Ian Gillan throughout "The Dark and the Light" and there are enough DEEP PURPLE subtleties lurking throughout the album. It's a pale shade, though, even if LA PAZ as a collective are sharp musicians. Chic McSherry cuts some nifty licks and solos. Drummer Paul McManus knows the meaning of rock steady. Alex Carmichael and Andy Mason become their own rhythm section at times. The brass shucks in the middle of "Shadow of Romance" are a slick move. Yet there's something LA PAZ is holding back. When the smooth, funky syncopation of "Lonely Are the Brave" is one of the best maneuvers on a hard rock album, there's room for self-analysis, depending on the band's overall objective.Of course, one gets the impression that the two albums these artists have whipped up together aren't meant to be taken too seriously. They ring like they were done for kicks and let those come to them who will. There's no question Doogie White and LA PAZ are tight, but if there's a next round to come, a little more urgency will be in order.

Scotish band Doogie White & La Paz return this April with a brand new studio album entitled Shut Up And Rawk!Almost immediately after their previous offering, The Dark And The Light (2013) had been released, Chic McSherry and Doogie White started writing new material. A total of 17 ideas were demo’d with 11 of them finally being crafted into songs for a new album. Recording could only be done in stages because of other commitments, but in many ways that extra time allowed the songs to develop and mature into a very powerful rock album, entitled Shut Up And Rawk!, which is due for a worldwide release by Metal Mind Productions on April 8th.Today the band reveal cover artwork and tracklisting of their new album. The front cover was designed by Jarosław Wieczorek. “I was trying to go for a bit of a tongue-in-cheek approach. Basically, I was aiming for an interplay between this sort of a charismatic shout-out in the album's title and the sedate, a bit clichéd image of a psychiatrist's session. I wanted the cover not so much to be a graphic representation of the title as to be one with it and, as a whole, to make for a kind of a joke.” – Wieczorek comments.The album has been mixed and mastered by Rolf Munkes at Empire Studios in Frankfurt, Germany.
