Hungarian-born vocalist/writer Dorothy has announced her new album,"Through The Years" will be released through UMG Recordings, Inc. Records in october 2023. DOROTHY, like Blondie and DAUGHTRY before them, is a band, not a person. Nevertheless, it's clear that Dorothy Martin is the driving force behind the Los Angeles-based quartet: she's not just the namesake, she's the singer and star around whom the other members revolve. Due to securing a deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation, the modernised blues-rock band - they share the difference between the Black Keys at their most electronic and Adele's full-throated wails - became a hot choice to click on in the mid-2010s, with their 2015 digital EP serving as a teaser for their 2016 full-length ROCKISDEAD. The band continued to hone their sound on subsequent efforts like 2018's 28 Days in the Valley and 2021's Gifts from the Holy Ghost.DOROTHY was built around Dorothy Martin, a singer born in Budapest but raised in San Diego. She started singing as a child and eventually made her way to Los Angeles, where she found her way into some rock circles. She began working with guitarist Mark Jackson and producer Ian Scott in 2013, and soon DOROTHY formed with Martin, Jackson, bassist Gregg Cash and drummer Zac Morris. Summer 2014 brought the single 'After Midnight', which quickly gained traction on social media, and a self-titled EP followed in autumn 2014. On September 12, 2014, Vogue UK debuted a video using "After Midnight" starring English model and actress Suki Waterhouse.After breaking their song on LA radio, KCRW DJ and music director Chris Douridas invited DOROTHY to perform during his weekly School Night series at Bardot in Hollywood on October 6, 2014. "A packed house moved increasingly closer to the stage while Dorothy, whiskey in one hand and microphone in the other, mesmerized the crowd with her powerhouse vocals," noted LA Weekly's Pamela Chelin.[7] "She's such a badass...like a revved up Adele teetering on the brink of chaos," said Douridas to Chelin.On August 19, 2014, the band premiered its second single "Wild Fire" on IndieShuffle to great reviews.On October 27, 2014, Billboard premiered DOROTHY's third single "Wicked Ones," comparing their bluesy, rock sound to Black Sabbath and The White Stripes. "You get a load of their easygoing cool and you’re reminded that there have always been kids like them keeping rock edgy, albeit under the radar, far from mainstream attention," noted Chris Payne of Billboard. "Wicked Ones" became the band's most successful single thus far. It was the #1 trending indie rock song on Soundcloud, peaked at #4 on the HypeMachine chart, and was selected by Skullcandy to lead a national ad campaign with James Harden.On October 28, 2014, DOROTHY released their debut self-titled EP, which was recorded in a spare bedroom at Scott's residence in Los Angeles. Following the release, they headlined a local residency at Bootleg Theater every Monday night in November. That month, they recorded a cover of Jay Z and Kanye West’s "No Church in the Wild" and have since added it to their live performances, which have received rave reviews. Following the residency, DOROTHY was named on Rolling Stone's Artists You Need To Know list on November 24, 2014. "You really get the full energy from everybody, because they put their heart and soul into the performance," said Dorothy to Maura Johnston for Rolling Stone. "It's more loose; it's not going to be exactly like the record. There's a lot of energy and vibe." In an interview with LA Weekly, Dorothy spoke on the band and overcoming stage fright. "I’ve always just wanted to sing and it was a long journey to get over the stage fright and find who I was," she says. "If you don't get knocked down, you can't stand up and say, ‘I'm ready for this now.’ I am fucking ready now. This is what I was meant to do. It’s about fucking time. Let's go. This is the first band that has been serious and feels right. I'm not telling the world, ‘Fuck me, fuck me.' Fuck you. I don't care if you think I'm hot or not, or want me to take my shirt off. I'm not going to. I’m going to grab the microphone and sing. That's what I came to do." On December 30, 2014, Rolling Stone pegged DOROTHY #14 on their 50 Best New Artists of 2014 list.On June 24, 2016, DOROTHY will release their debut album, ROCKISDEAD.

While there are a lot of unique voices in rock, not many are as much a powerhouse as Dorothy Martin of DOROTHY. The Los Angeles-bred singer and songwriter has the kind of guttural, aggressive delivery that's only reserved for the hardest rockers. Think Janis Joplin or Joan Jett for a new generation.Now, DOROTHY is back with their fourth studio album, "The Way", out on Roc Nation, the label founded by Jay-Z. Sure, Jay-Z is a hip-hop guy, but he also knows when he hears a good rock act, as was displayed when he teamed up in 2004 with LINKIN PARK on "Collision Course"."The Way" is an album that's really crafted to listen to from front to back. From "I Come Alive"'s opening lines to the last bars of the album's title and closing track, "The Way", the album takes the listener on an empowering journey of explosive riffing and passionate, often faith-filled lyrics.On "I Come Alive", Martin's alto vocals grab the listener from the get-go, with a dark, hypnotic tone and soulful singing. Her opening soloing almost sounds like guitar shredding, if it were duplicated on vocals. After she asserts that she's "come alive," the guitars crash in and crank the song up to maximum volume.Martin has a very unique style. That's a good thing, of course, and what you get is almost a female Myles Kennedy, but with her own sound. The Kennedy comparison comes from her soaring vocal style, which is really apparent on the anthemic "The Devil I Know", where Martin's singing really carries the song and takes center stage over the guitars. Elsewhere, on "Tombstone Town", Slash lends his expert guitar work to make this song a real banger."The Way" is chock full of mid-tempo rockers. Tracks such as "Bones" and "The Way" are a bit more bare bones, showing off DOROTHY's raw talent. The title track is a real standout. Martin sings about searching for the light amid darkness. There's something so heartfelt and vulnerable about Martin on "The Way", and it's fascinating to hear her go from a proud, bolstering rock chick throughout the album to a sensitive creature as the album wraps up.Martin already has a name for herself, but "The Way" should only elevate her in the rock world. It's the kind of album that leaves the listener wanting more and stoked for the next release.
