Bio:

Every Mother's Nightmare (EMN) is a hard rock/hair metal band formed in Nashville.Every Mother’s Nightmare formed in the early 1990s in Memphis and were signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records. After signing with Arista, their videos for songs such as “Walls Came Down”, “Love Can Make You Blind”, and “House of Pain” gained play on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball. While promoting the first two albums they opened for bands such as Cheap Trick and Dream Theater. They have also been featured in hundreds of hard rock magazines both nationally and internationally like Metal Edge as well as appearing on shows like the Joan Rivers’ talk show.In mid-2015 they released an EP titled "Grind". Grind includes the first single "Loco Crazy" which features a guest appearance by Zach Myers of Shinedown on guitar with a companion video. The EP also features Wayne Swinny of Saliva on guitar in the opening track titled "Snake".Every Mother's Nightmare signed with HighVolMusic in early 2017 for their first full-length release in 15 years. Grind will be released on October 6, 2017 and distributed through MRi/Sony Red. 'Grind' features a total of 11 tracks and 3 videos. The enhanced CD contains the 5 tracks from the self-released EP, plus 3 brand new studio tracks, 3 new live tracks recorded from the band's performance at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN on August 21, 2016 and the new video for 'Push' along with the videos 'Blown Away' and 'Loco Crazy'.

Album:

The debut effort from this talented Tennessee quartet was a good example of commercial hard rock. Songs like “Hard To Hold”, “Walls Come Down” and “Nobody Knows” really rock and helped push this album to sales of 400,000. There is also a good ballad called “Love Can Make You Blind” and a cover of the Charlie Daniels tune “Long Haired Country Boy”. Every Mother’s Nightmare was often accused by the media as being a “poor man’s Motley Crue“, but is that really so bad? I’m glad to say that they still record and tour to this day, although with a revamped line-up. Every Mother’s Nightmare should have got more recognition, and deserve two thumbs up!By 1993, major labels were tending to favor alternative rock over corporate metal. But at the dawn of the decade, majors were signing corporate headbangers left and right. And at Arista, one commercial metal/hard rock band that enjoyed a big promotional push in 1990 was Every Mother's Nightmare. This self-titled release left no doubt that Motley Crue was EMN's primary influence, and it was no secret that EMN wasn't exactly the most original band in the world. EMN's detractors denounced the outfit as a poor man's Motley Crue, a criticism that isn't without merit. But be that as it may, some of the album's tunes are catchy enough -- namely, "Hard to Hold," "Listen Up" and "Walls Come Down." This is far from a great album, and EMN often sounds too calculated for its own good, but the CD has its moments.

Album:

Every month my friend, mentor and head honcho, Olivier at Sleaze Roxx sends out a list of the month’s upcoming anniversary releases. The list for January 2018 was very astounding to me. I think since I started writing for the site back in November 2016, I have not seen so many great albums that I’d love to talk about. On this list is an album, that although it never gained serious notoriety, is a true gem. Every Mother’s Nightmare’s second Arista Records release Wake Up Screaming is up for conversation today. My take on this album may be slightly different from what you the reader may be used to. Please keep in mind though, through my ever so imaginative thought process, I wanted to convey how this album pertained to my life back in 1993. It is exciting to share with all how this album pertained at the time to me as a young adult. Hopefully, by the end, you will understand the relevance. Possibly also at the end if you choose to share your experiences in regards to this release, I am always obliged to read. I actually look forward to reading the comments. Reading someone else’s positive take — and I do really hope positive — really makes my writing even more worthwhile. Thank you and please enjoy my friends. So our story begins in the spring of 1993. Picture it in your head — a very skinny, guitar playing 18 year old with long strangely hair (maybe a mullet, you decide), in tight Levis jeans and Reebok high tops with aspirations of being the next great guitar wiz of his generation. With his 1988 Charvel Model 4 — a gift he received from his parents for a job well done in high school, to which he still owns to this day — firmly attached to his side at all times, our young aspiring rock God in the making decided to form a band in what would be termed in the vein of his heroes like Mötley Crüe, KISS and current favorite Slik Toxik. Under The Influence would be the name of his band. The group quickly started writing songs that would appear on the band’s one and only low budget demo, paid for by bassist Joe Petralia’s father. This demo was a collection of Mötley/KISS sounding compositions with singer Darrin Campbell doing his best Vince Neil impersonation. At the time, Under The Influence would listen to many bands to gain inspiration from.Between rehearsals, the band would hang out regularly at singer Campbell’s residence in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. One day, our aspiring guitar player would walk through the door of the Campbell residence with new music in hand. The guitar player had just made a voyage to Zap Records in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada with an older and wiser gentleman named Hughie Beauchamp. Beauchamp was a kind, gentle soul who took the young guitar player under his wing and taught him all about the intricacies of listening to music properly. Beauchamp always had the best set up for listening to music. Two chairs set up in his apartment directly in front of a very high tech, expensive system. There they would sip tea (Beauchamp did not take part in alcohol consumption for reasons unknown), talking about what they were listening to and making the odd joke along the way. Using the perfect analogy, Beauchamp was the Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid to this young guitar player.Occasionally, Beauchamp would call up his young protégé with a plan of taking a drive to Cobourg, Ontario, Canada to Zap Records where the two would chat for hours with then owner Jim Zap, carousing through the vast array of material. On one such occasion, our hero asked Zap if he could order a couple US imports for him. The two releases in question were Southgang’s Group Therapy and of course our very topic of the day — Every Mother’s Nightmare’s Wake Up Screaming. Zap responded to our young guitar God with a sigh and stated, “Of course my young friend, it will take a few weeks. Just keep in mind due to customs, these CDs will have the packaging taken off them, but will be of pristine condition. I will call you when they arrive!” Within a few weeks, our young hero would receive a phone call from his friend and mentor Beauchamp stating that the CDs had arrived. Quickly, the two music afionados jumped in Beauchamp’s ’80s Chevy Malibu wagon and made the half hour journey to Cobourg. Success!!!Fast forwarding a couple days and getting back to Under The Influence, our guitar player would play these two new CDs regularly for his bandmates. Bassist Petralia really thought these releases were decent and fit with the times. Petralia, like our young guitar God, would later discover Southgang guitarist Butch Walker as a solo artist. To this day, the two still have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr. Walker‘s talents. Of course, the drummer of the band, Mike Desbarres, was always intrigued by any hard rock music. Truth be told, at the time the young guitar player had truly found his musical sole mates. The four members of the band hardly ever disagreed on the sound of the band. They just played off their similar influences and generally had a good time. As the band sat and listened to the Every Mother’s Nightmare’s latest release, they analyzed all that was going on.The album opens with the stellar track “House of Pain.” It starts off slowly, with a melodic sensibility, but soon becomes a straight ahead in your face rocker that does not disappoint. “Closet Down The Hall” continues the onslaught metal attack. A true inspiration for the sound that Under the Influence was looking to achieve. “I Hate Myself” may be one of the best compositions on the album. The slow groove really is infectious. One thing that the band may have noticed upon listening is that the production itself may have been lackluster compared to Every Mother’s Nightmare’s counterparts Slik Toxik and Southgang. Still, it had a true rawness somewhat like Mötley Crüe’s Too Fast For Love, which was a huge inspiration to our young band. “Already Gone” was a brilliant ballad that would fit in perfectly at the time with anything being played on top 40 radio. As Under The Influence got to track five, they quickly recognize a familiar sound. “Tobacco Road” — originally recorded by Blues artist John D. Loudermilk in 1960 — but made famous once again by David Lee Roth in 1986 on his Eat Em’ And Smile album. This version was closer to Loudermilk’s than that of Roth’s. Of course, guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette played on the Roth version. Three virtuosos in their own right, but with no disrespect to the talents of Every Mother’s Nightmare guitarist Steve Malone, bassist Mark McMurtry and drummer Jim Phipp, this version is what can only be expected by a young band from Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Keeping the original blues element of the song remains firmly intact. Singer Rick Ruhl‘s raspy, bluesy vocal really makes this track work. “Slip And Fall” is yet another slow, groovy rocker that features a fantastic sing along chorus. The perfect example for Under The Influence to learn and grow from. A great way to hone the band’s song writing skills. “Good Die Young” and “Break Down” — still great tracks in their own right — are not as memorable as the previous compositions. They are tracks that could be called filler, but relevant enough to keep the flow of the album moving.“If I Had My Way” may be termed as another cover song of sorts. Originally written by former Autograph front man Steve Plunkett, it appears on Plunkett’s 1991, Quality Records release My Attitude. This song shows off Plunkett’s keen sense for writing a hit song that never became a hit song. With that said, let’s remember how many great artists were releasing albums on a regular basis. There was only so much success to go round. “Bang To The Bone” features a great ’80s type tongue in cheek lyric that fits well amongst this album of great songs already heard. The last two tracks — “I Needed You” and “Cryin’ Shame” — close out this stellar release perfectly. For a young band like Under The Influence, a truly enjoyable listen to learn from.As we close out, the question that may be asked is “What ever became of Under The Influence?” Well, like many stories told of young bands of the past, they faded off into the sunset. Things change and people move on. Looking to 2018, our young guitar hero, is now an older, wiser guitar hero who never quite achieved the success he had hoped for all those years ago. There was a stint playing in a Bon Jovi tribute band for many years that included many great gigs flying and driving throughout Canada. Not exactly what our hero had envisioned, but still keeping the dream alive. He currently resides in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada with his beautiful wife Jessica. The two can be seen playing locally in a country/rock band called Briden on occasion. Briden is currently looking forward to recording their debut album with singer/producer Mitch Malloy. He also keeps his musical knowledge sharp by writing for the excellent. As for the other three members, our guitar hero is still in close contact with all in question. Singer Darrin Campbell is raising a family and singing on occasion when called into duty. Bassist Joe Petralia is remaining relevant as he plays bass in a great band called Valyear. As for drummer Mike Desbarres, he was still hitting the skins hard until a shoulder injury sidelined him slightly. He still has that fire in his eye, with aspirations of becoming a well-schooled vocalist. It may also be noted that Desbarres was the original drummer in our guitar hero’s band Briden before the shoulder injury halted his dream. As for our Mr. Miyagi, Hughie Beauchamp is still alive and well, living in Orono, Ontario Canada. It has been some time since our hero has been in contact with him, but there is always hope that their paths with meet again at some point. Now as we close out, I must apologize for so much going on within this review in regards to the story of Under The Influence rather than that of Every Mother’s Nightmare, but with an album from the past, comes a life and how it relates — a time, a place, a memory. That time in my life was special. It was only fitting to share with you, the reader, how much this release means to me.

Album:

Forming in Memphis, Tennessee in 1987, EVERY MOTHER’S NIGHTMARE released two strong albums for major Arista Records in 1990 / 93. The band recorded their 3rd effort in 1994 but were dropped by the label, and the tapes shelved. Finally in 2001 Perris Records released it under the title “Backtraxx“.After hearing from fans that the CD was seemingly impossible to find, the band decided to release it again in 2019. Remastered by Bill Chavis for HighVolMusic with a new artwork and adding a few bonus tracks for their fans, once again “Backtraxx” gets a new life, and enters our music lovin’ lives.Grab your whiskey, some chaw, and get ready for some infectious grooves, and the guitar licks that can only come from one group. Every Mother’s Nightmare returns again with a remixing and remastering of one of their harder to find albums, ‘Backtraxx’.The boys remind us of the sound that gave them the edge in the music industry, carving their own path with their own rules and sound that has been many times replicated, but never duplicated. With this album, you get all sixteen great bluesy hard rock grooves you had on its previous release plus you get some new ones. Well, maybe not “new” per se, but new to your and my ears. You will find “Shotgun,” “Sunday,” and “Young Man Blues”, all from the Backtraxx demo sessions.Just enough to wet the ears with something new, and to appease all the fans that have been seeking this album to no avail.I simply love this album. It’s got everything a fan classic US bluesy hard rock could want. Great production, great musicianship, and fantastically written music, that makes this listener crave more.So here it is finally folks. The one you have been seeking since 2001. In all its remastered glory, and it’s worth every penny of time you have been waiting.

Album:

There existed a time period in the early 1990’s when the shift of the prevailing musical trend moved from melodic metal (AKA Hair Metal or Glam Metal) to Grunge. During this transition, many very good hard rock/metal bands fell through the cracks of the collective public consciousness as their record labels made the decision to promote bands following the hotter genre of the moment. Many of these bands languished and eventually disappeared altogether. However, a few of these bands found ways to survive via the strength of their live performances. One such band is Every Mother’s Nightmare, based out of Memphis, Tennessee. They received a lot of attention for their self-titled album in 1990, with their hit single “Love Can Make You Blind”, which became a staple on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.On October 6, 2017, Every Mother’s Nightmare (EMN for short) are set to release their 6th studio album, Grind on HighVolMusic. The band self-released a 5 song EP of the same name in 2015. This full-length album, their first in 15 years, includes those 5 songs plus 3 new studio tracks and 3 live tracks. Many things have changed since their 1990 debut. Vocalist Rick Ruhl is the sole original member, but has surrounded himself with outstanding musicians. Ruhl has moved on from the spandex, leather and makeup of the Glam Metal era to a long haired country boy in jeans look, but the one thing that has remained the same is the music. This album starts off strong with the catchy “Loco Crazy”, filled with monster guitar riffs supplied by Zach Myers of Shinedown. EMN invited other friends to help them on this album as well. Wayne Swinny (Saliva) lays down some guitar licks on “Snake”, a tune with a more modern sound that still fits with the rest of the tracks.“Stand Up” (featuring guest vocals by Jim Dandy) is foot-stomping, Southern Rock goodness.Grind has several great songs with a bluesy, Southern hard rock sound including “Upper Hand”, “Sacred Circle” and “Swing Again”. On the lighter side is “Blown Away”, which is a pure rock tune. “Days Are Through” is a bit of a power ballad with a raw edge. However, EMN know their strength is in their high energy live performances, which is the primary reason Grind concludes with three fan favorites – “Closet Down The Hall”, “Walls Come Down” and “Push”. After hearing these, you will understand how the band has survived nearly 30 years with only 6 albums. Ruhl knows how to work an audience and the rest of the band sounds fantastic. These selections made me feel like I was in the audience at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, Tennessee where they were recorded. From the first track to the last, Grind is a fantastic release, filled with great hard rock songs tinged with the band’s Southern influences and a dash of modern flavor. Ruhl‘s voice has taken on a more gravelly tone over the years, but it suits him and the music. If you missed out on Every Mother’s Nightmare the first time around, I encourage you to give them a listen this time. This album is pure, fun rock and roll that will transport you back to simpler times. Turns out that Every Mother’s Nightmare is actually every music lover’s dream.

Album:

Great news for EVERY MOTHER’s NIGHTMARE fans as the group’s album "Smokin’ Delta Voodoo", which was originally released in year 2000, has been remastered and will be getting re-released with bonus tracks by HighVolMusic on June 8, 2018.Originally including 12 tracks, "Smokin’ Delta Voodoo" contains some of the best songwriting from Every Mother’s Nightmare founder Rick Ruhl, freshly remastered by Anthony Focx (Beautiful Creatures) and now features 4 extra tracks and all new artwork.Forming in the early '90s, Every Mother’s Nightmare is no stranger to the music scene. After quickly arriving on the Memphis Rock scene, word spread about their energy-packed live performances gaining them the attention of Clive Davis (Arista Records). While promoting the first two albums they opened for bands such as Cheap Trick and Dream Theater, and their videos gained play on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball. After a quite long hiatus, "Smokin’ Delta Voodoo" was Every Mother's Nightmare comeback album in 2000's. The glammy party-rock or the previous recording is still here in a couple of tracks, however the band hardened their sound here. The songs are more straight forward hard rock, plenty of melody but raw around the edges. At places, the music reminds me of Tesla circa Bust A Nut or Into The Now. On others, some Lynch Mob material. It maintains its roots solidly in the early '90s hard rock style, yet darker.Still plenty of good songs, you have strong uptempo rockers in "Push" and "Kerosene", while most the rest of the tracks are midtempo oriented based on groove. They deliver a cool break the acoustically based "#3", and a fine semi-ballad in the laid-back "Somehow.""Smokin’ Delta Voodoo" is a welcomed reissue to re-discover this interesting band, and it's released just in time for Every Mother’s Nightmare current dates all over the US. The remaster has polished a bit the sound, more clear and not so 'raspy' now.

Album:

Every Mothers Nightmare (EMN) from d in Nashville, Tennesse blends blues, metal, and southern rock to create their sound. After their formation they quickly became the most prominent leaders of the Memphis rock scene, packing smoky venues on historic Beale Street and throughout the city as the word spread about their blistery, energy-packed performances. Before long, EMNs local reputation made its way to recording labels and Arista Records signed the band to an impressive record deal. The band repaid their fans devotion by recording the videos right in the Memphis club where it happened for them. The first single, Walls Come Down, went to 16 on Billboard album tracks and the video was played on MTVs Headbangers Ball for six weeks. The second single Love Can Make You Blind went to 3 on the Billboard album tracks and stayed at 11 for sixteen weeks. It was a big favorite on MTV as well, going to number 1 on All Request and Headbangers Ball for seven weeks. Their self-titled album went on to sell about 500,000 copies. EMN’s second album, Wake Up Screaming, sold more than 200,000 copies and band received a lot of press and toured for five years for these two albums, opening up for bands like Cheap Trick and Dream Theater, and performing many headliner shows, one such show being the Livestock Festival which drew a crowd of 55,000. One time, the band sold 9,000 tickets in a single night after being added late to a bill at a Florida racetrack. They were featured in hundreds of hard rock magazines in the U.S. and overseas and were guests on many television shows from Joan Rivers’ talk show to the Playboy video channel. Writing, recording and touring…it’s a way of life for EMN. They follow their artistic drive, creating the sound that emerges from their souls, even if this sound over the years sometimes didn’t match what was hip at the moment. The foundation of rock and roll is rebellion after all… EMN perhaps are rebels in the very core sense because they believed in hard rock through times when hard rock just wasn’t the thing to do. After a few tough years when the band had problems to find a supportive label they finally signed to Perris records who released three years during 2001 (Back Traxx, Smokin Delta Voodoo and Deeper Shade Of Grey). Deeper Shade Of Grey is filled with good melodic hardrock much like the bands debut album, yet with a slight updated sound and also some similarities to Enuff Znuff. Especially the first few songs (Done To Me and Until I Break) remind me of Enuff Znuff. The rest of the album is more standard melodic rock, with some good tunes like the title track Deeper Shade Of Grey (uptempo melodic rocker), Carbon (semi melodic rockballad), Hello Darkness (semi melodic rockballad), Fly Away (midtempo melodic rocker), Blind To See (uptempo melodic rocker) and the hidden track (track number 13, no songtitle mentioned). This is a good return of Every Mothers Nightmare, maybe not as good as their debut, but still an album that has got both an updated sound and a melodic rock approach.

Album:

‘Resurrect The Faithful’ is the provocative new album from EMN / EVERY MOTHER’S NIGHTMARE, an 11-tracks of rocking groove and punch. Emerged in the early ’90s, EMN mixed glammy US hard rock with more groove, riff-based material, and all over the years, while modernizing their sound, the group retained that vibe intact.Resurrect the Faithful is a true testament of everything that EMN/Every Mother's Nightmare is today. This is the best album of my career, it is perfect in every way, at least to us. There isn't a song on it that I wished I could go back and fix or do differently. Everything is as it should be. We put a lot of heart and soul into this album. All of these songs were written and recorded during some very dark times both personally and all around. Only the strong survive and EMN/Every Mother's Nightmare is still here. There are two songs on this album, ''Getaway'' and ''Love Can Make You Blind'' that I thought needed some explaining. ''Getaway'' is the transition song in my eyes that takes you from then to now. It was left over from the Grind sessions. We rewrote and reworked the song and it leads you perfectly from Grind to 'Resurrect the Faithful'. ''Love Can Make You Blind'' is not a copy or trying to be anything other than this band's version of it. This is the way we play it now and how it sounds live. And, we figured we had the time in the studio to record it therefore, we did. How many times do you get to go back and record a song over in this business?
