Bio:

Rough Cutt was an American Hard rock band from Los Angeles, California who released 2 studio albums on Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1980s. Rough Cutt never achieved the commercial success enjoyed by many other L.A. bands of that time but various members went on to success in other groups, including Jake E. Lee with Ozzy Osbourne, Amir Derakh with Orgy, Paul Shortino with Quiet Riot, and Craig Goldy and Claude Schnell with Dio.The first Rough Cutt line-up featured vocalist Paul Shortino, drummer Dave Alford, guitarist Jake E. Lee, keyboardist Claude Schnell, and bassist Joey Cristofanilli. Both Lee and Alford had also previously been in another Los Angeles band, Ratt. Both Schnell and Cristofanilli had previously been in the band Magic. Two other former Ratt members, guitarist Chris Hager and bassist Matt Thorne a.k.a. Matt Thorr (who replaced Cristofanilli) would also soon join Rough Cutt. After his departure, Cristofanilli temporarily joined Ratt himself, later joining forces with members of the band Sin who went on to release the album Made In Heaven under the name Jag Wire in 1985.Lee left Rough Cutt in 1982, auditioned for, and was hired briefly by the band Dio, and then replaced the deceased Randy Rhoads as Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist. Lee in turn was replaced by Craig Goldy, formerly of the San Diego band Vengeance. Ronnie James Dio greatly influenced the development of the band. Dio's wife Wendy Dio was the group's manager, and Dio himself helped write one of the band's songs. Rough Cutt contributed two tracks, "A Little Kindness" and "Used & Abused", both produced by Dio and featuring Jake E Lee on guitar, to the compilation album L.A's Hottest Unsigned Bands, issued in 1983. Another Dio-produced track, "Try A Little Harder", with Goldy on guitar featured on the KLOS 95 1/2: Rock to Riches compilation, along with another Wendy Dio project NuHaven, released later on in 1983. Goldy soon left the band, and went on to play in Giuffria, and later in Dio's band. Goldy was replaced by Amir Derakh, another San Diego band alumnus. With the line-up solidified with Shortino, Alford, Derakh, Hager, and Thorne, Rough Cutt was signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1984. The band gained national exposure when they appeared on the 'Rock Palace' TV show performing the songs "Crank It Up", "Dreamin' Again", "Street Gang Livin'", and "Try A Little Harder.Hosted by comedian Howie Mandel, the recording took place on January 1, 1984 at the Hollywood Palace, now the Avalon Hollywood. Rough Cutt also made their way to Europe showcasing at London's famed Marquee Club on April 13, 1984 and playing a badly promoted show at the Fabrik in Hamburg, Germany, both well in advance of recording their first studio album. After waiting around for a year to work with producer Ted Templeman, who had signed the band to Warner Bros. but was busy with both Van Halen and David Lee Roth at the time, Rough Cutt decided to record their debut album, Rough Cutt (1985), with Tom Allom instead. The band toured extensively in the United States as an opening act supporting Krokus on their The Blitz tour alongside Accept, followed by an extensive trek with Dio on their Sacred Heart tour, which lasted from August through December 1985.Rough Cutt were also part of the legendary Super Rock '85 festival bill on August 10, 1985 at Seibu Lions Stadium in Tokorozawa, Japan sharing the stage with headliners Dio, Foreigner, Mama's Boys, Sting, and several Japanese acts, including Earthshaker. The show was commemorated with a VHS release titled Super Rock In Japan '85; Rough Cutt was featured with 4 songs from their debut album, "Black Widow", "Take Her", "Dreamin' Again", and "Piece of My Heart."Veteran producer Jack Douglas of Aerosmith fame would guide the band's follow-up effort Wants You! (1986). Rough Cutt would join Dio on the last date of their Sacred Heart tour at the R.C. Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 10, 1986 and once again made their way to Japan. While in Japan, Shortino made the decision to leave the band due to internal differences about what direction their music should take. Rough Cutt's manager Wendy Dio introduced Shortino to Quiet Riot and engineered a deal for him to step in as their new lead singer in place of Kevin DuBrow who had been fired. Shortino was briefly replaced by Parramore McCarty of Warrior before Rough Cutt called it quits. Derakh, Thorne and Alford re-grouped with singer Danny Simon and guitarist Michael Raphael to form Jailhouse, releasing a live EP, Alive in a Mad World, in 1989 while Hager would team up with Jeff Warner of Black 'N Blue in Woop & the Count. Thorne was also briefly a member of L.A. Rocks, renamed Eyes once vocalist James Christian entered the fray, while Derakh found major success with self-proclaimed death pop band Orgy in the late 90's.In 1996, DeRock Records released Rough Cutt Live which contained 3 new studio cuts, "House of Pain", "Prowler", and "Peyote", as bonus tracks. The same label would also issue a full-length studio album by Rough Cutt offshoot Jailhouse in 1998, with all 5 songs from the 1989 Alive in a Mad World EP added as bonus tracks.Shortino reformed Rough Cutt in 2000 with an all-new lineup that included former Aerosmith guitarist Jimmy Crespo, keyboardist James 'J.T.' Garrett, Shortino's former Quiet Riot bandmate bassist Sean McNabb, and Magnitude 9 drummer John Homan. The band announced the release of an EP, titled Sneak Peek, in 2000 but it was canceled and expanded into a full length-album instead. Sacred Place was released in 2002 under the name Paul Shortino's The Cutt on Shortino's own MusicWorks Entertainment label and featured additional contributions by guitarists Brad Gillis, Carlos Cavazo, Howard Leese, and Dave Whiston as well as bassists Chuck Wright and Jason Boyleston. The Warner Bros. era line-up of Rough Cutt reformed for a one-off reunion show in October 2002 at the Viper Room in Hollywood with Shortino, Alford, Derakh, Hager, and Thorne performing together one last time.In the fall of 2005, Wounded Bird Records re-issued both Rough Cutt Warner Bros. studio albums as a 2-for-1 single disc, Rough Cutt/Rough Cutt Wants You.In 2008, Deadline Records issued the double disc Anthology consisting of pre- and post-Warner Bros. era demos and a live set recorded in Syracuse, New York in 1985.

Album:

Although ROUGH CUTT never achieved the commercial success enjoyed by many other L.A. hard rock bands during the '80s, their two albums from the era are truly excellent. Rock Candy Records has just 'Remastered & Reloaded' both... let's start with the band's self-titled "Rough Cutt".After rising from the ashes of several San Diego hard rock bands in 1983 (including the pre-Ratt Mickey Ratt), and contributing a few ear-catching tracks to the L.A.'s Hottest Unsigned Bands compilation, the earliest incarnation of Rough Cutt proceeded to be plundered by everyone from Ozzy Osbourne (who snagged guitarist Jake E. Lee), Giuffria (hiring guitarist Craig Goldy) to Ronnie James Dio (who pinched keyboardist Claude Schnell). But in fact, it was Ronnie James Dio who would have a significant impact on Rough Cutt's fortunes, as he recorded demos for the band, and subsequently managed by his wife Wendy Dio, the band secured a coveted deal with label giant Warner Brother’s Records. After waiting around for a year to work with producer Ted Templeman (busy with both Van Halen and David Lee Roth at the time) Rough Cutt decided to record their debut album "Rough Cutt" with Englishman Tom Allom (Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Kix) instead.Mixing kickin' hard rockers like the killer "Take Her" (co-written by Craig Goldy & Ronnie James Dio), the irrepressible energy of "She's Too Hott" or the guitar-driven "Cutt Your Heart Out" with arena-ready anthems such as "Kids Will Rock", this albums rocks. There's more kicking numbers in "Never Gonna Die," "Black Widow" (co-written by Wendy Dio, manager of the band) and "Dressed to Kill", while the emotional "You Keep Breaking My Heart" shows the strength of Shortino's impassioned vocals."Dreamin' Again" is the power ballad, a strong one that should have enjoyed more success back in the day.Rough Cutt toured extensively in the United States as an opening act supporting Krokus on their The Blitz tour alongside Accept, followed by an extensive trek with Dio on their Sacred Heart tour, which lasted half year. Rough Cutt were also part of the legendary Super Rock '85 festival bill on August 10, 1985 at Seibu Lions Stadium in Tokorozawa, Japan sharing the stage with headliners Dio, Foreigner, Mama's Boys, Sting, and several Japanese acts, including Earthshaker. The show was commemorated with a VHS release titled Super Rock In Japan '85; Rough Cutt was featured with 4 songs from their debut album, giving the band major exposure.More stronger than the typical US hard rock acts from the era, Rough Cutt's debut featured above-average material on their debut, all strong tracks wisely arranged and performed with a top notch musicianship. This is one of my favorite hard rock albums from the mid-Eighties, and this Rock Candy remastering is superb; punchy, sharp and clean. Truly gives the album a new life.

Album:

Fronted by great shouter Paul Shortino, ROUGH CUTT never achieved the commercial success enjoyed by many other L.A. hard rock bands during the '80s, but their two albums from the era are truly excellent. Rock Candy Records has just 'Remastered & Reloaded' both... now it's time for second effort where Rough Cutt... "Wants You!"..For Rough Cutt their career was, in retrospect, all about missed opportunity. As one of the first L.A. based bands to excite the early '80s scene, and signed to label behemoths Warner Brothers Records, they were expected to feed the flames of a growing interest in hard rock. Their self-titled debut album was, in turn, feted and praised, but failed (despite being championed by Ronnie James Dio) to connect commercially, overtaken by fellow contenders such as Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe and Dokken which enjoyed better support from their recording labels. Despite the lack of proper support by WB Records, the band was ushered back into the studio to record a follow up album, "Rough Cutt Wants You!" issued in 1986. It was a record of stylistic advancement, showcasing the band in a more mature light, something more befitting their real ability. According to times, it's also more melodic hard oriented, more radio friendly.Produced by one of the truly great 'knob twiddle' of the era Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, and Brighton Rock's celebrated debut Young Wild & Free the same year), the sound is less abrasive and far more focused on catchiness than the debut, relying on great arrangements and sublime rhythms. Tracks such as ‘Don’t Settle For Less’, ‘Double Trouble’, the killer ‘Bad Reputation’ and, especially the great ballad ‘The Night Cries Out (For You)’ finds Rough Cutt casting their net wider by introducing a sophistication beyond the regular meat ‘n potatoes that you might expect from such a hard rocking collective.‘Let ‘Em Talk’ is perhaps the most catchy (and commercial) track ever written by the band, arranged with a lovely melodic rock sheen. Of course you have opener ‘Rock The USA’ which now in perspective feels a bit cheesy but it was a true anthem for the band, same with ‘We Like It Loud’, some kind of an answer to Twisted Sister's hit 'I Wanna Rock'.One of the most interesting tracks is ‘Hot N Heavy’, at first glance a simple rocker but in its middle section adds Latin percussion turning it very original. Now, 2016, "Rough Cutt Wants You!" is turning 30... time flies, but this fresh remastering job makes it sound better than most of the current 'digital' productions.Thank goodness for record labels like Rock Candy, because this album - and Rough Cutt's debut - deserved a proper remaster, but essentially for being available again at a regular price.

Album:

Released by a small label in the Nineties, ”Rough Cutt Live” comprises the legacy of live gigs that ROUGH CUTT left behind after broke-up. Paul Shortino & Co. poured through 100% of live tapes and chose the best performances for this CD, and used them “as is” : no over-dubs of any kind. So this is a live CD that REALLY sounds like a live CD.It’s heavy, it’s screamy and it’s very raw and totally live. The sound quality is very good to our ears, and considering it’s the only ROUGH CUTT live recording available (although out of print now), if you like Rough Cutt, you need this. Fans of Paul Shortino should also check this out as well.

Album:

An insight into the work of one of the most talented 80s metal bands with a selection of studio demos, unreleased and live material from the archives compiled on a spectacular 2CD set with extensive liner notes! Rough Cutt musicians included Jake E. Lee, vocalist Paul Shortino (who replaced Kevin Dubrow in Quiet Riot for one album and currently appears on the Las Vegas show Raiding The Rock Vault) and several other highly talented musicians who left to play with Dio! Limited edition fold-out digipack!ROUGH CUTT not only was one of the most consistent hard rock acts during the 80s, but also one of the most prolific. Despite of officially releasing only two albums in the decade, they composed a lot of material and recorded it with very good quality standards. As requested, here’s this release by Dead Line / Cleo Recs titled “Anthology“, taking a deep look at ROUGH CUTT’s history. It isn’t a ‘greatest hits’ at all, but a selection of studio recordings, demos, unreleased material and live captures from the vaults – compiled on a spectacular 2-CD set.We have their very early ’84 recordings, unreleased material from the first album studio sessions, a really good live recording from 1985, and more…The Fiddler’s Studio Sessions were recorded before the band’s first album, in 1984. An earlier version of “Try a Little Harder”, with Craig Goldy on guitar, was released on the KLOS 95 1/2: Rock to Riches compilation in 1983.The song “Prowler” was re-recorded for inclusion on Rough Cutt Live as one of 3 studio bonus tracks. Here’s the original version.“Dreamin’ Again”, “Try a Little Harder”, “Crank It Up” and “Street Gang Livin'” were all performed live on the ‘Rock Palace’ TV show, taped on January 1, 1984, at the Hollywood Palace, now the Avalon Hollywood. This double set was released years early by the label, but this reissue has a better output, sounds fuller.

Album:

Out of nowhere and after more than two decades, ROUGH CUTT featuring Paul Shortino, Amir Derakh and Matt Thorne are leasing the band’s third album, simply titled “III“. The trio enlisted help from former Quiet Riot and Ratt guitarist Carlos Cavazo to play some lead guitar on some tunes.Rough Cutt III is composed of songs that were written by the band members when they reunited a few years ago and intended to record new music. I should point out that long-time followers of the band will notice that the tracks “Prowler,” “Peyote” and “House of Pain” were previously available on the Rough Cutt Live album issued in the mid-’90s. That album is now out of print, and adding these bonus studio cuts brings additional value to this release.Rough Cutt’s comeback not only is a very nice surprise, but also “III” is absolutely awesome, for us already one of the best hard rock of the year 2021.There’s a great melody, hook, chorus and an absolutely blistering solo on “Bed Of Black Roses”, while “Electric” features a killer driving groove, with a fantastic and memorable riff. Then “Dive” and “Bleed” are great representation of modern era Cutt, where Shortino’s signature vocal is undeniable.“Prowler” is lead by the thumping bass of Matt Thorne. The track is dark and gritty, and is enhanced with some progressive elements. Shortino really flexes his vocal muscles here.We find very strong rockers on “Don’t Say A Word” and “Secrets”, and “Chasing Your Dreams” which closes the album is an all acoustic affair that highlights Shortino’s still present, magnificent vocal abilities. While the dual guitar harmonies that have been one of early Rough Cutt trademarks are diminished here, now the band privileges the groove, and fits very well this 2021 line-up / style approach. Shortino is in great voice and the band feels energetic, tight.Rough Cutt ‘III’ is a very good album and comeback, and well worth all these years of wait for a new recording.

Album:

Recorded in 1987 after Paul Shortino had left to join Quiet Riot. For those that may not know, in 1987 Paul Shortino decided to leave ROUGH CUTT to join multi platinum recording artist Quiet Riot. This left Rough Cutt looking for a new frontman in order to move forward. After a nationwide search for a new vocalist, the band decided Parramore ‘Perry’ McCarty (ex Warrior / Atomic Playboys) was their man and they entered the studio with legend Ronnie James Dio who produced & recorded some of their new songs. This new Rough Cutt lineup taped more songs to shop to record labels for a new deal, which never crystallized. Now all these recordings – 17 tracks – are being released for the first time on a CD titled “Rhythm Machine (The Perry McCarty Years)“.This is killer set of hard rocking songs with a lot of bite, very finely recorded and with a very good sound quality. It’s a shame this album was shelved back in the day, but now we have the chance to hear this terrific slice of classic ’80s American Hard Rock. This is definitely one for the history books for any fan of Rough Cutt and Perry McCarty. It was a short lived time but one full of creativity, songwriting and recording which would eventually see Matt and Amir move onto Jailhouse, and Perry move onto joining Steve Stevens & The Atomic Playboys.
