Bio:

38 Special (also written .38 Special or Thirty-Eight Special) is an American rock band that was formed by neighborhood friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida. The band's first two albums had a strong southern rock influence. By the early 1980s, .38 Special shifted to a more accessible arena rock style without abandoning its southern rock roots. This shift helped to usher in a string of successful albums and singles.Their breakthrough hit was "Hold On Loosely" (1981). "Caught Up in You" (1982) and "If I'd Been the One" (1984) both hit No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Album Rock Tracks chart. "Back Where You Belong" (1984) continued the annual sequence of radio favorites. In 1985 they had another hit with "Teacher Teacher", written by Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams. The song climbed to #4 on the Billboard Top Tracks Chart, spending 10 weeks on the chart from the soundtrack of the 1984 film Teachers. "Second Chance" was a No. 1 hit on Billboard's adult contemporary chart in 1989, followed by "The Sound of Your Voice" in 1991 (Billboard Hot 100 #33) from Bone Against Steel and "Fade to Blue" from the album Resolution made it to #33 on the Mainstream Rock chart in 1997.In 2007, 38 Special was the opening act on Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr.'s Rowdy Frynds Tour, and on September 27, 2008, they filmed a CMT Crossroads special with country singer Trace Adkins, performing both artists' hits from over the years. In 2009, 38 Special opened for REO Speedwagon and Styx as part of the "Can't Stop Rockin' Tour."As of 2014, the lineup consists of Don Barnes, guitarist Danny Chauncey, keyboardist Bobby Capps, drummer Gary Moffatt, and bassist Barry Dunaway. In 2012 a notice was posted on 38 Special's website saying Van Zant would not tour with the band due to health issues related to inner-ear nerve damage, although he would continue to write and record with the band. In 2013, after nearly a year of missing performances, it was confirmed that Donnie Van Zant had officially left 38 Special after 39 years, and was retiring from music.[2] In 2014, longtime bassist Larry Junstrom was replaced by Barry Dunaway. Dunaway has filled in for Junstrom for a handful of shows in 2011, and a few shows in 2013 as well. Junstrom was forced to retire due to a hand injury, that required surgery. This leaves only Don Barnes as an original member, although Barnes was absent from the band from 1987 until 1992.

Album:

Yeah, Japan did it again: all the best 38 SPECIAL albums finally have been remastered, a 2017 fresh treatment using the original US analog master tapes and pressed on high quality SHM-CD. It's all done in wonderful cardboard sleeve mini LP replica, which also faithfully replicates the OBI design of the Japanese first pressing LP.And now we have here in exclusive "Special Forces", another stupendous rocking album from 38 Special.Released in 1982, "Special Forces" was 38 Special's entry to mainstream. The album includes one of the best songs from their career and their first Top 10 hit; 'Caught Up in You', a hook-filled, smoothly sung radio rock gem that gets its energy from the grace and power of its chorus.Yeah, the song is co-written by Survivor's Jim Peterik, who also co-wrote 3 song in total, 2 of them ending at the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart as well. But the hooks and the well-proportioned rhythms don't stop there. "You Keep Runnin' Away" (also co-penned by Peterik) gave the album its second charted single, which peaked at number 38, and the borderline boogie rock dash of "Rough Housin'" is among Special Forces' best cuts.Wisely, 38 Special kept the musical recipe similar to its last couple of releases, with the only striking difference coming from an even greater ability to design a memorable and punchy lead single.However... the AOR sensibility started to arise in this album, and that's why I like this band so much. The remaining Pererik track 'Chain Lightnin' is one of my favorites ever from the band. Think a mix of Survivor circa Eye Of The Tiger and the first Night Ranger album. Yeah, it's that good!Later, "Breakin' Loose" fit in comfortably with the rest of the tracks, offering up a hearty dose of the group's early Southern rock taste, but again, with an AORish atmosphere.'Take 'Em Out' sounds like a lost REO Speedwagon song - and still is classic 38 Special but with this 'new' 1982 commercial touch.Darn, "Special Forces" brings back some memories... but above all, it's killer rocking album with that classic 1982-83 American sound. As said before, we have here top class Southern rock tinged melodic rockers mixed with Survivor circa Eye Of The Tiger and Night Ranger's Dawn Patrol. Killer stuff if you ask me.38 SPECIAL music isn't easy to remaster even with modern technology, because the band's harmonics are absolutely 'analog' and the digital treatment may destroy part of the charm.

Japanese music market did it again: all the best 38 SPECIAL albums finally have been remastered, a 2017 fresh treatment using the original US analog master tapes and pressed on high quality SHM-CD. It's all done in wonderful cardboard sleeve mini LP replica, which also faithfully replicates the OBI design of the Japanese first pressing LP.And now we have here in exclusive "Rock & Roll Strategy", another stupendous rocking album from 38 Special."Rock & Roll Strategy" is the eighth studio album by 38 Special, released in 1988, and their final album for long-time label A&M Records. It was the first album to feature the new vocalist and keyboard player Max Carl.Carl brought some of his experience in the melodic rock field, and as happened with the previous 38 Special album, this "Rock & Roll Strategy" packs a sound typical from the second half of the 80s, a polished and clean production.Don Barnes is no more in 38 Special here, gone to pursue a solo career, so Max Carl sings a lot of lead vocals and the sound is definitely different but still has the Jeff Carlisi guitar riffs (plus new guitarist Danny Chauncey) and the band rocks with bluesy melodies. This album contained a Top 10 hit, "Second Chance", which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, an AORrish number among my favorites.Another great tune is midtempo "Midnight Magic" and the sweet melodic "Innocent Eyes" (with some Survivor on it) , and if you need bluesy rockers press play on "Comin' Down Tonight", "Little Sheba" or "Hot 'Lanta".They end the album with the excellent "Love Strikes", more of a rock&pop song with great atmosphere. While 38 Special southern rock roots are still present in "Rock & Roll Strategy", this is a mainstream rock album with a true 1988 American sound, mostly rock&pop / melodic rock oriented which will appeal fans of the genre and the overall '80s sound. This fresh Japanese remaster on SHM-CD is fabulous, crisp, pristine clear.

Japanese music market did it again: all the best 38 SPECIAL albums finally have been remastered, a 2017 fresh treatment using the original US analog master tapes and pressed on high quality SHM-CD. It's all done in wonderful cardboard sleeve mini LP replica, which also faithfully replicates the OBI design of the Japanese first pressing LP.And now we have here in exclusive "Bone Against Steel", another 38 Special fav of mine.Recorded 1990 and released the following year, "Bone Against Steel" is a distinctive US Rock 1990 album. This year was quite unique in terms of sound production for rock music in America - and some of the greatest melodic hard rock albums of all time appeared this year. The overall 'glammy / hair metal / AOR' sound of 1987-1989 was replaced by a more rootsy rock style still retaining the gloss and crystal clear production. Take as example Damn Yankees, Bad Company's 'Holy Water', Cinderella's 'Heartbreak Station', etc.38 Special always was bluesy based, and this perfecly fit the 'rootsy factor', so their new album only needed the 'gloss and crystal clear production'.But the band also wanted a more 'classic American' melodic songwriting, and called an expert for it: Survivor's Jim Peterik.Peterik co-wrote 3 songs for "Bone Against Steel", but also provided a general orientation."Bone Against Steel", while still faithful to 38 Special bluesy style, sounds and feels melodic hard rock 1990.It's not strange that opener "The Sound of Your Voice" was a major hit, and one of three songs co-written by Peterik. The song, with a vocal hook in the chorus very reminiscent of Survivor's 'I Can't Hold Back', reached #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.Another of the Peterik songs, "Rebel To Rebel", also did it well in the chart, and it's one of the CD highlights. "You Be the Dam, I'll Be the Water" was co-written by the great Van Stephenson, a wonderful tune.Call me nuts if "Don't Wanna Get It Dirty" doesn't sounds like one of Damn Yankees' debut inside tracks, and it's not surprising at all to hear Jack Blades providing background vocals. Also on the album there's Bad Company's Brian Howe contributing backing vocals, another of the above aforementioned comparisons. One of the reasons I like 38 Special "Bone Against Steel" so much is the strong melodic songwriting, but essentially, its 1990 sound production. Think Damn Yankees' debut, Bad Company's 'Holy Water' or even Survivor, just more bluesy. The original CD release always has sounded very good to me, however this fresh Japanese remaster on SHM-CD is a step above, fuller.

Album:

Hold On Loosely, 38 Special fans. The classic southern rock band has announced their new album Milestone, out on September 19th independently. In celebration of the band’s 50th anniversary, their first new music in over 20 years features guests and co-writes with Train’s Pat Monahan and Randy Bachman, and longtime collaborator Jim Peterik (Survivor, Sammy Hagar, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick).Along with the announcement, 38 Special shares the lilting lead single, and accompanying music video, “All I Haven’t Said” which nods to the melody-driven bands that came before them.“That’s my throwback to the ’60s, inspired by bands like the Searchers,” says frontman and co-founder Don Barnes, who produced the album alongside Peterik. “I’ve always loved that jangling guitar sound and what’s old is new again. We just inject more power guitars to it.”Formed in 1974, the band toured tirelessly from the start, sharpening the explosive live show that’s been 38 Special’s calling card for a half-century. Along the way, the Florida natives fine-tuned their sound too: a blend of muscle and melody, filled with the arena-rock pop hooks that would soon become staples of FM radio. As 38 Special enters its sixth decade together, the music continues with Milestone. Fueled up on snarling guitars, anthemic melodies, and the desire to break new ground, they update their sound for the 2020s, bridging the gap between past and present without forgetting their rock & roll roots.“After all this time, we wanted to create a more modern 38 Special album,” says Barnes. “This is a fresh, updated approach to the sound we’ve been making together for so long. Why not make a big statement after all these years? When you’re reintroducing yourself to the world, ‘good enough’ doesn’t work anymore. If you’re gonna do it, you might as well go big.” To revisit — and reimagine — the tightly-constructed sound that turned 38 Special into platinum-selling artists, the band turned to an old friend. Decades earlier, they’d struck up a partnership with Jim Peterik, founder of the band Survivor. Sitting around his kitchen table in 1980, Barnes and Peterik co-wrote “Hold On Loosely” with 38 Special’s original guitarist, Jeff Carlisi. One year later, the same trio wrote “Caught Up In You.” Those songs became defining songs not only of a decade, but of an entire genre, and Milestone gave the band a chance to work with Peterik once again.Between their cross-country tour dates, 38 Special began recording Milestone at the Atlanta-area studio of Will Turpin, longtime bassist for Collective Soul. They worked quickly, all five musicians playing together in real time, capturing each song in a series of live-in-the-studio performances. Overdubs took place at Peterik’s home studio, and mixing was completed by Johnny K, the hard-rock legend behind albums by Disturbed, Plain White T’s, and Megadeth.Barnes has been putting in the work ever since he formed 38 Special in Jacksonville, Florida, joining forces with co-founder Donnie Van Zant — the younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant — as well a talented vocalist who left 38 special’s lineup in 2013 due to inner-ear nerve damage. The group had dedicated itself to the long, steady climb from small clubs to big arenas. The Rock and Roll Channel on TalkShopLive will feature a dedicated one-hour 38 Special show with Don Barnes. The development of the new album and a track-by-track breakdown will be discussed in detail. The show is live on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7 pm ET and available to view on demand after the livestream.

Album:

The 1979 album of American legends 38 SPECIAL, expanded by five bonus cuts plus a full live album by the name of "Captured Live 1984 - Reunion Arena Dallas", currently rereleased by Bad Ruputation, should find its way into every serious collection, even though the original might already be part of it. Perfect hard rock with lots of Southern Rock vibes in the vein of LYNYRND SKYNYRD and a lot of extras are arguments here for sure, just as extraordinary compositions like the electrifying title track or "Take Me Through The Night" are.38 Special’s third – and indeed rockin’ album – finds the band starting to incorporate some arena rock elements into their sound. And this is pretty clear since the beginning of the album, with title track ‘Rockin’ Into The Night’, a song written by Jim Peterik, Gary Smith and Frank Sullivan – three Survivor members and originally intended for their next album, but it was given to 38 Special and became the band’s first big hit. This success marked the first of many songs Jim Peterik would write for and with the band, and he even play ‘Rockin’ Into The Night’ today with his live band.By this third album, 38 Special discovered how to fuse fun-lovin’ Southern rock with a formula that would bring the band commercial attention.“Stone Cold Believer” rocks a little harder with its gear-shifting guitar riff, a song for the arenas. But the evidence that .38 Special was progressing extends beyond the first two cuts.Tracks such as ‘Take Me Through the Night,’ ‘The Love That I’ve Lost,’ and ‘Turn It On’ are sturdy, middle-of-the-road rockers, and they proved that Van Zant was indeed capable of giving the band’s material enough vocal gusto to eventually break through.

This leaves only Don Barnes as an original member, although Barnes was absent from the band from 1987 until 1992.

Album:

Now we have here the excellent Rock Candy Records remastered version of 38 SPECIAL 1982’s classic album “Special Forces“, featuring 5 bonus tracks including the killer B-side ‘Prisoners of Rock ‘N’ Roll’ co-written by Survivor’s Jim Peterik.Released May 4th, 1982, “Special Forces” was 38 Special’s entry to mainstream. The album includes one of the best songs from their career and their first Top 10 hit; ‘Caught Up in You’, a hook-filled, smoothly sung radio rock gem that gets its energy from the grace and power of its chorus. Yeah, the song is also co-written by Peterik, who also co-wrote 4 song in total, 2 of them ending at the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. But the hooks and the well-proportioned rhythms doesn’t stop there. “You Keep Runnin’ Away” (also co-penned by Peterik) gave the album its second charted single, which peaked at number 38, and the borderline boogie rock dash of “Rough Housin'” is among Special Forces’ best cuts.Wisely, 38 Special kept the musical recipe similar to its last couple of releases, with the only striking difference coming from an even greater ability to design a memorable and punchy lead single. However… the AOR sensibitity started to arise in this album, and that’s why we like this band so much. The remaining Peterik track ‘Chain Lightnin’ is one of our favorites ever from the band. Think a mix of Survivor circa Eye Of The Tiger and the first Night Ranger album. Yeah, it’s that good!Later, “Breakin’ Loose” fit in comfortably with the rest of the tracks, offering up a hearty dose of the group’s early Southern rock taste, but again, with an AORish atmosphere.‘Take ‘Em Out’ sounds like a lost REO Speedwagon song – and still is classic 38 Special but with this ‘new’ 1982 commercial touch.“Special Forces” brings back some memories… but above all, it’s killer rocking album with that classic 1982-83 American production sound. We have here top class Southern rock tinged melodic rockers like a cocktail between Survivor circa Eye Of The Tiger and Night Ranger’s Dawn Patrol. Superb stuff if you ask me.38 SPECIAL music isn’t easy to remaster even with modern technology, because the band’s harmonics are absolutely ‘analog’ and the digital treatment may destroy part of the charm. This remaster from Rock Candy resident Jon Astley is fantastic, and despite being released less than 3 years ago, the CD is out of print already.
