Rock Candy Records has remastered the first two WINGER albums, the self-titled debut already featured here, and this monster entitled "In The Heart Of The Young", including two bonus tracks.Winger's debut was an immediate commercial and critical success, selling in excess of a million units and making frontman Kip Winger’s chiselled look a household name, rivalling even the popularity of Jon Bon Jovi.At that point in time almost every teenage girl in the USA probably had a poster of him adorning their bedroom wall and every aspiring male rocker wanted to lead a band just as good as his.For this follow-up album, Kip retained all the positive points of his debut’s success, with no changes to either band members or his producer Beau Hill, except that this time around they elected to record in Los Angeles rather than New York City.Musically, "In the Heart Of The Young" followed closely in the footsteps of the band's debut, however all was augmented to the stratosphere: bombastic, catchier, sharper, bringing together 11 tracks of superior Melodic Rock / AOR goodness.The sound is BIG, the hooks are huge and the songs were as every bit on the money as first time around. No longer into the Frontiers Music roster, Kip Winger has retrieved the rights of WINGER's latest albums. In the case of "Karma", Kip has freshly remastered the album himself, added the bonus track originally available in some countries, and re-released it 2018 via his own label.After their comeback into the scene with the 'IV' album, three years after Winger returned with "Karma", a much more rocking, commercial affair.First off, this is probably the heaviest Winger has ever sounded. Long gone are the days of syrupy pop-rock numbers, "Karma" reveals a meaner and leaner Winger.Rather than try and return to the early slick smooth sound, what Winger have done is take the "modern" edge of 'IV', the killer riffs of 'Pull' and merge them with the unmistakable choruses and melody of the band's early work.It has to be said that what that marriage has produced is quite stunning. What is also in evidence is the starker, emotional approach taken on Kip's solo outings which add a maturity in the vocal department and arrangements that has possibly been lacking from the band's previous efforts.Perhaps Winger did make a deal with the devil, as the opening track states, but the one that is really possessed here is Reb Beach. By listening to him shred all over the CD you’d swear he was doing it to demonstrate to David Coverdale how underutilized he is in Whitesnake."Stone Cold Killer" keeps up the momentum with Winger's ranging bass line and Morgenstein's drums clouting you between the eyes. This is controlled aggressive stuff, however it manages to possess a killer melody line and sing-a-long chorus in between the razor sharp guitars.There really is no let up as "Big World Away" romps past with its mesmerising vocals and rip roaring guitars. "Come A Little Closer" perfectly mixes the Pull era of the band with Kip's solo years. The stop start guitars insist on embedding themselves in the mind, however it's the vocals that steal the show and especially during the chorus, Kip is completely hypnotising."Pull Me Under" has that classic Winger of old chorus with the vocals slowly building up to a controlled scream as Beach and second guitarist John Roth weave their magic both during the main body of the song and the sublime hammer-on solo. Both get their instruments to squeal and yowl in delight as Morganstein and Winger keep a rock solid rhythm.The first track to really take its foot off the gas is "Supernova" (a soaring number that is arguably the best on the CD) featuring a Kip's impassioned vocal. Kip always sound best when he seems to be on the verge of losing control and this is a perfect example of just that."Always Within Me" is a killer power ballad, it sounds relevant now, however it would have been a massive hit back in the Nineties.Once more "Feeding Frenzy" perfectly blends the accessible melody that Winger are able to so easily produce with the biting insistent beat and power of Morgenstein. It's the last true rocking track on the album as "After All This Time" and "Witness" slow things down.The first of the two has a bluesy weeping feel as Kip sings about long term love. There's a beautiful solo and the drumming is restrained and graceful. Choosing to end such a guitar heavy album with two slower tracks may seem a little odd, however here it works well, after the blues of "After All This Time", "Witness" has a huge expansive sound that just encompasses you and completely transports you into the song.As with the rest of the album, the sound is spot on and as the song progresses through its seven minutes the atmosphere just grows and grows until a spectacular almost three minute guitar solo leaves you stunned.Winger has never rocked this hard or been this aggressive. "Karma" is a killer album, rocking for the most part and rich in melody.What about this Kip Winger remaster? Compared with the original Frontiers release, this 2018 remaster feels a bit more melodic, I mean, balanced in the instrumentation, and I guess it will appeal even more the traditional Melodic Hard Rock audience.

It's a 'progressive thinking man’s album', mature, elaborated, yet with catchy rockers as well into the mix.Since the opening riffs of "Right Up Ahead" hit you, it will be instantly apparent that this is a leaner and meaner Winger, kicking off with this heavy rock tune, dark and ominous with plenty of ferocious guitar from Beach and Kip's snarling vocals.As you make your way through the album, a similar vibe keeps coming at you. Although some of the tunes have an uptempo, somewhat commercial feel, like the Van Halen-ish "Your Great Escape" (awesome guitar tone), and others touch upon epic, progressive type elements, like the majestic, keyboard laden rocker "Disappear", for the most part these are serious hard rock tunes that pull no punches."Blue Suede Shoes" (great chorus) and the raging "M16" are hard and heavy hitters, and "Livin' Just to Die" contains some wicked and crunchy guitar squeals from Beach alongside some crisp drum work from Morgenstein.Beach delivers some tricky lead guitar work on the party rock of "Short Flight to Mexico" (a melodic rocker for the band 80s fans), while "Generica" again dives into almost prog-rock waters with varied vocals from Kip, keyboards, and textured guitar work."On a Day Like Today" is the only real ballad on the album, and while "Can't Take It Back" starts off like it might fall into the same category, then it quickly develops into an elaborated rocker with huge vocal layers and a bombastic chorus.I was one of those listeners who really dug the first Winger albums back in the '80s, prime and cheesy commercial hard rock. Then the band demonstrate their incredible talent as musicians in third effort Pull.After many years, Winger come back with this "Winger IV", a consistent piece of work containing some of Winger‘s best material ever.Heavier and darker stuff, spiced with some melodious rockers and a strong production.I don't know if "Winger IV" needed a remastering, but Kip Winger has increased the punch a bit, and there's a more 'lively' feel in this reissue. A welcomed one, because the album was out of stock at many stores / countries.

Rare 300 hand-numbered limited edition red vinyl of WINGER ‘s “Seventeen The Demos“, released some time ago by Cleopatra Records, now a collectible and of course out of print.This is an official release, but there isn’t a regular cardboard cover with this, just a paper sleeve and a insert in a plastic sheet sleeve. Also included is a patch and a pin / button.These excellent 16-track professional demos were released in other formats but sonically pretty brick-walled / saturated. However the mastering for this LP pressing is different, much better.Musically, these are top notch melodic rock / AOR classics, original versions of ‘Can’t Get Enuff’, ‘Easy Come Easy Go’, ‘Seventeen’, ‘Headed for a Heartbreak’, etc.The amazing thing about this release is that these demo tracks sound unbelievably good. A lot of start-up bands nowadays would be ecstatic to put out a demo release with the audio quality of this one.There are tracks like “Madalaine,” which sound similar to the officially released track, but seems like they are tuned down for another look into how it might have turned out.Overall, these recordings have a nice raw feel and energy to them. Kip’s vocals sound great, Reb’s guitar is up in the mix and he even has a few surprise licks here and there. While Paul Taylor and Rod Morgenstein are listed here, they only play on a couple of songs. In celebration of their 35 years as a touring and recording act, multi-platinum artist Winger have announced the release of their seventh studio album, the aptly titled “Seven” on May 5th. The 12-track album, produced by vocalist/bassist Kip Winger and recorded in Nashville, TN, will be distributed worldwide by Frontiers Music Srl. It is the band’s first new album since their 2014 release “Better Days Comin’”.Winger is one of the only bands formed during the late ‘80s that still features all of their original members: Kip Winger, Reb Beach, Rod Morgenstein, and Paul Taylor. Guitarist John Roth was added in 1992. To support the new album, Winger will partake in extensive touring, beginning with a UK tour with Steel Panther in May followed by a U.S tour with the Tom Keifer Band in June. Additionally, the band will do a number of headline shows throughout the summer.
