Bio:

Nelson is an American rock band founded by singer/songwriters Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (twin sons of Ricky Nelson and Kristin Nelson). The band achieved huge success during the early 90s with their debut album After the Rain. The album featured the No. 1 hit "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection" and also reached double platinum status. After the success of their first album, the band claims to have been faced with conflicts with their record label, lack of support from the media, and the shift in music towards grunge and alternative rock. They eventually split with Geffen Records in 1995. Despite this, the band has continued to produce and release albums independently under their own label, Stone Canyon Records.Matthew and Gunnar also perform under the name of Ricky Nelson Remembered, as a tribute to their father. They are listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family to reach number one record status in three successive generations (beginning with grandparents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson).During the 1980s, Matthew and Gunnar played as Strange Agents and as The Nelsons, with which they played the Los Angeles club scene. A year after the death of their father in a plane crash, Lorne Michaels agreed to have the Nelsons as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, at the request of their manager at the time. They became the first unsigned band to play on the show. During this iteration of the band, Matthew was the lead singer and bassist, while Gunnar played the drums. As they returned home from the show, Gunnar claims he had what he called "an epiphany", which he shared with his brother. He told him that they should break the band as it was and start sharing the front stage together. Gunnar promised to learn to play guitar and did so in a year.As the band tried to grab a record deal, they settled with Geffen Records and began approaching A&R executive John Kalodner. According to Gunnar, they met with Kalodner "every month for a year", during which he filtered the songs they brought him until they had enough for an album.During this time, they were also introduced to Marc Tanner, who helped them polish their songwriting skills.During this time, Nelson was also approached to contribute a song to the film Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Matthew and Gunnar then co-wrote a song with Dweezil Zappa called "Two Heads are Better than One". Since the band was in process of being signed up to Geffen, Kalodner recommended them not to use their names for the song, so they were billed as Power Tool instead. The song eventually became the film's theme song. After a year of meeting with Kalodner without being signed, Matthew and Gunnar met with him, against the wishes of their managers, and played an acoustic version of "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection". Kalodner was impressed and the band was signed the next day.As the Nelsons prepared to go into the studio, they started assembling a band. They met drummer Bobby Rock at the MTV Music Awards, when he was still with Vinnie Vincent Invasion, and kept in touch. After that band broke up, Nelson asked him to join their band. Joey Cathcart had played guitars with the brothers in high school so they decided to approach him. They were introduced to guitarist Brett Garsed by their manager in Australia. Finally, they contacted Paul Mirkovich, who had worked with them during the demo sessions for the album. The full band headed to the studio where they worked with Marc Tanner. According to the Nelsons, John Kalodner "basically let us do our own thing".After the Rain was released in June 26, 1990 and became an instant success. The album ended up selling more than 3,000,000 copies, eventually being certified double platinum by RIAA. As a result, the band began a World Tour with over 300 concerts. Their first single, "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection" peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Their other songs "After the Rain", "More than Ever", and "Only Time will Tell" peaked at #6, #14, and #28 respectively. In 2010, Nelson reached a record deal with Frontiers Records. They've released three albums almost consecutively. The first, Before the Rain, is a collection of some of the demo songs that were left out of the After the Rain album. The second one is Perfect Storm, which is a compilation of live recordings from the After the Rain world tour. This is notable because, despite being such a massive world tour that covered almost 300 dates across the world, no official recording was made of it. The third album is a new studio album called Lightning Strikes Twice, which features new material from the band. It is the first original studio album from the band since Life was released in 1999.The release of the three albums in 2010 coincided with the band's official anniversary. For it, they organized a 20th Anniversary Tour around several countries. Singer/guitarist Mark Slaughter joined Nelson for the tour, which began at the Firefest in Nottingham, England, U.K.In addition to touring as Nelson, the twin singer-songwriters also perform a separate tribute act for their father, called "Ricky Nelson Remembered." Plus, they perform with celebrity all-star rock band Scrap Metal.

Album:

Imaginator is the third album from American rock group Nelson. It was released independently under their label Stone Canyon Records in 1996.The album is notable for being the second album recorded by the band, after the success of their debut album, After the Rain. The album was planned to be released around 1993. However, the album was rejected by producer John Kalodner and the executives at Geffen Records for being too heavy and dark. They gave the band the choice to either record another album, or they would be released from their contract. The band decided to return to the studio again and recorded a third album, Because They Can, which ended up being released by Geffen in 1995. The band broke up with Geffen shortly after the release of that album and released Imaginator independently. After the success of their first album, After the Rain, and years of touring, Nelson returned to the studio to record their second album. Gunnar Nelson has said on interviews that they were "a little angry too because the whole music industry seemed to change, as well as our own label", referring to how labels and audiences were moving away from the music style that had made them popular at first. They came up with a concept album that Nelson described as "really dark and brooding and angry". Gunnar described the concept as being "about the machine that is the media. That same machine that built us up and was also ready to tear us down". The album comments on society's dependence on technology and media to make decisions, and how people should take control of their lives and their choices.Gunnar has also said the band wanted to prove their musicianship and showcase the talent of each member. He has said that the sound of the album is a representation of their live sound at the time.According to Gunnar Nelson, Imaginator was recorded "in isolation" and nobody from Geffen was involved in the process. He has said that producer John Kalodner was "too busy making Aerosmith records" and he never visited the studio during the recording, so they decided to continue recording the album they had envisioned, hoping he would like it in the end.He also referred to the process as a "creative catharsis" saying that they felt they were under attack and they were "exorcising our demons, and we brought it into Geffen".Production began August–September 1992 at Granny's House Recording Studio in Reno, NV. Demos were tracked previously at Cherokee Studios in LA, CA. The album was recorded and co-produced by David Holmann who had recorded Olivia Newton John, Little River Band, Bush and No Doubt. Several tracks originally recorded never ended up on the ultimate release of either the "Imaginator" or "Because They Can" records. When the band presented Imaginator to John Kalodner and the executives at Geffen, they weren't pleased with it. According to Gunnar Nelson, it "scared the hell out of [them] and basically they wanted to distance themselves from it as quickly as possible". Gunnar referred to it as "a very uncomfortable meeting".The executives at Geffen gave the band the choice to either record another album, more according to what they were expecting, or they would be released from their contract. On interviews, Gunnar Nelson has compared the album to Metallica's 1991 self-titled album, arguing that Geffen could've had a similar success with Imaginator, if they had released it.However, he says that Geffen was seemingly expecting "After the Rain, Pt. II".Although the band was frustrated by the reaction at Geffen, they decided to return to the studio to record another album. The result was Because They Can, which was released in 1995. The band broke up with Geffen shortly after. After parting ways with Geffen, Nelson established their own label called Stone Canyon Records. In 1996, they released Imaginator through a partnership with JVC Victor in Japan. The album was finally released in the United States in 1998.

Album:

As part of the recent Universal Music Japan SHM-CD 2016 reissue series, here's one you can't miss in your collection; NELSON's "After The Rain". A commercial success on Billboard spending 64 weeks on the charts containing the #1 hit '(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection', the album was certified double platinum.Matthew and Gunnar Nelson decided to approach Geffen Records presenting new songs to them for almost a year. Expert A&R executive John Kalodner, after listening an acoustic version of '(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection' signed the brothers a deal with DGC / Universal. As they prepared to record, Matthew and Gunnar started assembling a band. They settled on drummer Bobby Rock (ex Vinnie Vincent Invasion), Joey Cathcart (Peter Beckett), keyboardist & orchestrator Paul Mirkovich (Cher, Whitesnake) and awesome Aussie guitar virtuoso Brett Garsed, still unknown in America but who was part of superstar John Farnham band. Most of the songs were co-written with Marc Tanner, who also produced the album.Released in 1990, "After The Rain" boasted a glossy, '80s-sounding blend of corporate rock and arena rock, and it was an immediate international MTV sensation, scoring the number one hit ‘Can’t Live Without Your Love & Affection’ and a string of other successful singles. For all melodic rock - and many hard rock / metal fans, though few would admit it - the catchy choruses, the melodic lead guitar work, slick arrangements and trademark harmony lead vocals were completely irresistible.'More Than Ever', 'Everywhere I Go', the great ballad 'Only Time Will Tell' or the awesome title track are a wet dream for every melodic rocker.A guilty pleasure for headbangers, and a classic from an era for all rock aficionados, "After The Rain" is a must have. This Japanese reissue on SHM-CD delivers a fabulous sound, and you also get two more songs; the lovely 'Too Many Dreams' and 'Keep One Heart', true keepers for serious Nelson fans.

Album:

In their 25 years as a musical duo, Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, collectively known simply as NELSON, have grown from pop music idols to seasoned songwriters and performers. Now, as the brothers celebrate a quarter century at the forefront of the international music scene, they return with "Peace Out", their most ambitious studio album to date.Released in Europe on May 15 and North America on May 19 by Frontiers Music Srl, "Peace Out" marks a return to the well-crafted pop songs that put the band at the top of the Billboard charts in the 1990s. From the anthemic "Invincible" to the rollicking soon-to-be pop classic "Back In The Day", "Peace Out" is quintessential NELSON from start to finish."We set a pretty high standard with our previous release with Frontiers — 'Lightning Strikes Twice'," says Gunnar Nelson. "That record received by far the most critical acclaim of any NELSON record to date. 'Peace Out' was expected to be even BETTER, so the goal was to push ourselves to the very limit — past what we believed we could do. We wanted to write and record the most exciting, authentic, uplifting, and rockin' NELSON record ever made! The mission: to make a classic."The brothers have always had their work cut out for themselves, being the third generation in one of America's most celebrated entertainment families, who came into U.S. households every week from 1952 through 1966 on the ABC sitcom "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet". Their grandfather, Ozzie Nelson, was a celebrated big band leader, whose orchestra featured their grandmother, Harriet; and their late father, Ricky, was one of rock 'n' roll's earliest superstars, a member of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and generally credited with creating the country-rock format. When the Nelson twins burst onto the music scene with the Billboard No. 1 hit "(I Can't Live Without Your) Love & Affection", in 1990, they set a Guinness World Record by being the only family to have three generations of No. 1 hits on the charts! NELSON went on to release a half dozen rock albums selling nearly 7 million records, beginning with the multi-platinum "After The Rain"."Peace Out" marks NELSON's fourth release on Frontiers since 2010.Look for NELSON to embark on a world tour upon the album's release. "We're putting the live show together as we speak... And it will incorporate the very best live songs from our career... Focusing heavily on the 'Peace Out' album," says Gunnar.

Album:

Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, the twin sons of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Rick Nelson and frontmen of Melodic Rock wonders NELSON, will release their first collection of holiday songs "This Christmas" next December 4th.A spirited blend of pop, rock and country, neatly wrapped in the Nelsons' warm family harmonies, "This Christmas" features special guests Molly Cherryholmes (on fiddle), and singer Alyssa Bonagura, with the latter joining them on the title track. Bonagura and the Nelsons penned the tune with her father, Michael Bonagura, the Americana artist. A fresh take on the holiday theme, "This Christmas" has a sweet, romantic twist. The brothers, who first achieved international stardom in the '90s with the Number 1 hit "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection," produced the new 12-track collection, which also includes lively arrangements of traditional holiday classics like "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Joy to the World". The album also features modern tunes such as "Blue Christmas," "Jingle Bells" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," which could be mistaken for a vintage Rick Nelson recording. The Christmas LP is just one aspect of what has become a new phase for the brothers. Just as their dad did with his Stone Canyon Band in the Seventies, Matthew and Gunnar, who now reside in Nashville, have been working on music that will bridge the gap between rock and country. In 2014, they performed a well-received set at the CMA Music Festival, which eschewed all the trappings of their pop-metal heyday and instead spotlighted the two singers and their guitars.Nelson's approach to acoustics and Americana music is not new, they did it a lot in their excellent second album 'Because They Can'."This Christmas" is a really nice album for the next holidays, but also very enjoyable to Nelson regular fans. While some tracks are too much 'traditionalist', others are a true pleasure if you loved (like me) the 'Because They Can' era. "Away In A Manger" and "White Christmas" are delicious.

Line Up:

Gunnar Nelson (Vocals, Guitars)
Matthew Nelson (Vocals, Bass)

Album:

Japan Maxi CD from 1991.A commercial success on Billboard spending 64 weeks on the charts containing the #1 hit '(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection', the album was certified double platinum.Matthew and Gunnar Nelson decided to approach Geffen Records presenting new songs to them for almost a year.

Album:

On September 29, 1991, NELSON reached the height of the U.S. single chart with their evergreen hit “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love And Affection”, from their multi-platinum debut album “After the Rain”.This single made history when it landed America’s iconic Nelson family (bandleader Ozzie Nelson, rock legend Rick Nelson, and twins Matthew and Gunnar) into the Guinness Book of World Records as the ONLY family in entertainment with three successive generations of #1 hitmakers.Their music has stood the test of time and now 20 years later Matthew and Gunnar Nelson explore fresh creative territory in the present with their new album “Lightning Strikes Twice”.“Our new disc has allowed us creatively, artistically and musically to resolve some unfinished business” Gunnar says.“We’ve had a blast going into the studio writing and performing some of our best songs. New fans are discovering our music and original fans have shown incredible support all over the world. It ROCKS!”.Matthew adds; “Who could believe we would be doing a NELSON sequel to ‘After the Rain’ twenty years later? Gunnar and I feel it’s our best work to date and should live up to its name ‘Lightning Strikes Twice’.We believe NELSON fans will agree with that forecast and hope they feel it’s been worth the long wait.”Despite a series of perfectly solid albums, the first question that comes to mind when spinning “Lightning Strikes Twice” is how well it stacks up against Nelson’s classic debut After the Rain.Obviously the Nelson twins are older and wiser, and this album reflects that maturity, though there’s still a fair amount of energy and spirit to be found.Album opener “Call Me” is a terrific single, and brings to mind the band’s underrated ‘Because They Can’ album.“Day By Day” sounds like it came off the latest Bon Jovi disc, and the wickedly melodic “How Can I Miss You” could have been a 7800 Fahrenheit b-side as well. There are moments, particularly on songs like “You’re All I Need Tonight” where you hear the brothers’ famous vocal harmonies, and the tranquil ballad “To Get Back to You” (which features a guest appearance by Toto’s Steve Lukather) where you know you’re hearing vintage Nelson, and their signature style remains intact.“Lightning Strikes Twice” is a very strong melodic rock album that should satisfy most Nelson fans, as well as fans of classic ‘80s style melodic rock in general. It’s a very polished, very melodic and extremely well written album that showcases two of the best performers in the genre. Here’s hoping it’s the first of many albums to come.

Album:

Because They Can is the second album from American rock group Nelson, released by Geffen Records in 1995.The album had a shaky production history as a result of creative differences between brothers Matthew and Gunnar Nelson and the Geffen Records executives, the latter led by John Kalodner. After the success of their debut album, After the Rain, the band recorded the heavier and darker follow-up Imaginator. When Kalodner and other Geffen executives were displeased with it, Nelson was told to record a lighter album. After more than a year of writing and recording, Nelson came up with Because They Can. The band left Geffen shortly after the release of the album. After the success of their first album, After the Rain, and years of touring, Nelson returned to the studio to record their second album. They came up with a darker and harder, concept album titled Imaginator. However, when they presented the album to producer John Kalodner and the executives at Geffen Records, they weren't pleased. They then gave the band the choice to either record another album, more according to what they were expecting, or they would be released from their contract. The band decided to return to the studio and began working on a more acoustic-oriented album which was, according to Gunnar, "180 degrees in the opposite direction of Imaginator".Because They Can was recorded at various studios such as Sound City, Studio F, Nichols Canyon Studios, Caravell Studios, Granny's House, Capitol Studios, Cactus Studios and Quarkbrain Studio. It featured original band members Brett Garsed, Paul Mirkovich, Joey Cathcart and Bobby Rock on most of the songs, and it featured guest musicians such as Mike Baird, Don Felder, Steve Porcaro and others. The album was mixed at Conway Studios.Because They Can was released in 1995, five years after the release of Nelson's first album. According to Gunnar Nelson, Geffen was not "going to put any money into promoting it".The album went mostly unnoticed and did not appear on the Billboard charts. "(You Got Me) All Shook Up" was released to radio and video outlets, and peaked at #30 on the Radio & Records Pop chart. On another interview, Gunnar said about the album "I’m really proud of [it], but our fanbase had gone away. Everybody had changed their musical tastes, and it was really kind of a drag".Gunnar has also noted that People gave them the "best bad review in the history of rock 'n' roll" for Because They Can writing only "Maybe they shouldn’t".He has argued that a lot of the negative reviews they had were just based on their legacy and not in the actual music.

Album:

A career-spanning compilation of Nelson's iconic tracks like the Top 10 hits ”(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection” and “After the Rain." Also includes the newly recorded acoustic version of “Keep One Heart,” & a song movie fans will recognize from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, “Two Heads Are Better Than One,” included as the original unreleased version featuring Gunnar’s vocals as heard in the film.
