Bio:

Lee Aaron (born Karen Lynn Greening, July 21, 1962) is a Canadian rock and jazz singer. She had several hits in the 1980s and early 1990s such as "Metal Queen", "Whatcha Do to My Body" and "Sex with Love".Lee Aaron was born in Belleville, Ontario, and began singing in school musicals at the age of five. She was discovered singing in a music production when she was fifteen years old, and was asked to join a local rock group called "Lee Aaron" while still in high school in Brampton, Ontario.Aaron sang, played alto saxophone and keyboards in this first incarnation of the band.At age seventeen, Aaron's face was badly bruised and her nose broken in a car accident. No surgery was required, but years later, in a profile on Aaron, Canadian Musician Magazine mistakenly embellished the incident into Aaron requiring complete facial reconstruction. The magazine printed a retraction in the following month's issue.1980s.Aaron's debut 1982 album The Lee Aaron Project on Freedom Records (later reissued on Attic) featured a who's who of the Toronto music scene, with members of Moxy, Riff Raff, Santers, and Triumph's Rik Emmett. The album, available in England only as an import, created a groundswell of interest that resulted in Aaron's appearance that year at the Reading Festival. In late 1982, Aaron flew to New York and posed topless for the men's magazine OUI.The magazine's March 1983 issue featured Aaron on the cover and in an interview. Aaron later concluded that posing for the magazine damaged her musical credibility; she regretted the decision and assigned blame for it to pressure from her manager.1984's recording of the album Metal Queen resulted in a multi-album deal with Attic Records.During the recording of Metal Queen, guitarist John Albani joined the band and he and Aaron formed a solid songwriting partnership that would last eleven years.Between 1984 and 1992, Aaron toured almost non-stop, including over twenty European tours and appearances in Japan and the US. She released six albums on Attic Records in Canada, as well as international releases in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, The Benelux, Italy,Scandinavia, Australia and Japan. She has won three Toronto Music Awards for Best Female Vocalist, ten Juno nominations, and topped dozens of European music polls. Her greatest commercial success came with the release of Bodyrock in 1989. The album spawned several hit songs, including "Whatcha Do to My Body", and was certified double platinum in Canada.1990s.In 1992, Aaron left Attic Records to start her own label, Hip Chic Music, and released two more albums. On 1994's Emotional Rain (distributed by A & M Canada) Aaron worked with Don Short and Don Binns (Sons of Freedom), Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie's Tin Machine), and Knox Chandler (The Psychedelic Furs).1995's 2preciious was a project record written with members of Sons of Freedom. It was critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful,as she tried to drop the name "Lee Aaron" entirely and use her real name, Karen. In 1997, she began exploring jazz and blues.2000s.In 2000, she released Slick Chick, again on her own imprint, Barking Dog Music (with distribution by Fusion 3). Aaron played extensively for this release, showcasing at The Top of the Senator in Toronto and numerous jazz festivals across Canada and Europe. In 2002, Aaron was approached to audition with the Modern Baroque Opera Company. She was cast and appeared that year in an ALCAN Performing Arts Award-winning production called 101 Songs for the Marquis De Sade. Her eleventh album, Beautiful Things, a pop-jazz hybrid, was released in 2004.Lee Aaron continues to play both rock and selected jazz shows. On June 11, 2011, after 30 years in the business, she made her first appearance on Swedish soil when she played the Sweden Rock Festival.

Album:

Metal Queen is the second studio album by singer Lee Aaron, released on February 24, 1984 through Attic Records. It reached #69 on the RPM Canadian Albums Chart and held that position for two weeks.Canadian singer Karen Lynn Greening, performing as Lee Aaron, had a go at metal stardom in the 1980s. Metal Queen was her second studio release, and an all-out attempt at creating an enduring metal persona. Notwithstanding the unwieldy length of that sword, the picture on the album cover was promising; unfortunately it was also the best thing that the project had going for it.While Aaron's vocals are solid enough, she was never surrounded with the necessary songwriting or instrument-playing talent. As a result, it would be difficult to find a metal album that is as devoid of interesting ideas as Metal Queen. Despite this being 1984, the album drips of inoffensive vanilla, a potpourri of paint-by-numbers light metal songs lacking in any kind of edge, intensity, or sweat. Whatever emotion generated has the cold fakery of music borrowed from somewhere else. The better tracks are average; the weaker tracks belong squarely on the stage of the local high school talent show.Deceiver pokes it's head above the weeds by delivering just enough energy to warrant some attention. The rest of the material moves slowly and surely towards a nausea inducing slow death by boredom.

Album:

Lee Aaron is the self-titled fourth studio album by singer Lee Aaron, released on 17 February 1987 through Attic Records; a remastered edition was reissued in 2002 through Unidisc Music. It is Aaron's third-highest charting album, reaching No. 39 on the Canadian albums chart and remaining on that chart for seventeen weeks, as well as reaching the top 60 in three other countries. Two singles reached the Canadian singles chart: "Only Human" at No. 44 and "Goin' Off the Deep End" at No. 93.I have always admired Canadian rock chick Lee Aaron. From her first nude display in Oui magazine, through to being the bonafide metal queen with an album title to boot. During the mid-eighties, Lee released a number of great energetic albums, and easily appealed against luminaries such as the Doro Pesch fronted Warlock, singer/guitarist Lita Ford and others of that ilk. Come 1987, Lee assembled a band which resembled and sounded much like the late great Wrabit (a much loved Canadian band here among the GLORY-DAZE staff). The fact that musical direction for this album came from Wrabit axe-wizard John Albani with able support from bassist Chris Brockway was half the reason why, and to my ears that is why this album had all the hallmarks of a successful release.. and so it proved.. or nearly. Aaron had signed with Virgin Records subsidiary 10 Records (Gary Moore etc) for European distribution on her prior album 'Call Of The Wild'. This self titled album followed two years later on the same label, but it was to be shortlived, as the label went belly-up not long after this release.Melodic maple-leaf mayhem gets us underway with the melodic romp of 'Powerline', followed by the strutty guitar attack of 'Hands Are Tied'. Albani is allowed to let loose in his own understated way. The superb ballad 'Only Human' is one of the best you'll hear in this genre. Beautiful stuff. The video for this song was kinda cool too! Lots of wispy white curtains etc. Lee looked like she was having fun! 'Empty Hearts' is fluid AOR, the melodies really flow, as do the smooth bass lines from Brockway, a standout on the track. Punchy is the best way to describe 'Number One'. Gotta say, this is how I love my 80's melodic hard rock!! Even the pairing of 'Don't Rain On My Parade' and 'Goin' Off The Deep End' though mid-paced, don't lose anything compared with the aforementioned other tracks. Another ballad 'If This Is Love' is kinda obligatory on an album such as this, but the standout track for me is the brooding power of 'Eye For An Eye'. Grab a listen if you can. If Albani and Brockway were at any stage considering a Wrabit reformation (please let that be a possibility.. pleeeezzzeee!), then a track like 'Heartbeat Of The World' would be an ideal candidate. The album closer 'Dream With Me' meanders its way through a HR/AOR soundscape. Dreamy indeed!Lee followed this up with the equally compelling 'Body Rock' from 1989, and 1991's 'Some Girls Do'; both albums containing a wealth of excellent songs, but this self-titled effort will always be my favourite. She sort of lost her way a bit during the nineties, with the musical climate proving to be her undoing, along with many others it must be said. However, come the year 2000 and beyond, Lee has re-established herself in the jazz genre now, and has rebased to White Rock, British Columbia to pursue her new musical direction, as well as a late stint at motherhood (now the proud parent of two young childen). Both directions by all accounts proving to be successful career choices. We are so happy for her. Thanks for the hard rock memories Lee! You will return one day won't you?

Album:

Powerline: The Best of Lee Aaron. Released in 1991, and just as the title says, it is all of the Lee Aaron from the 80's you're going to need, unless you are a die hard fan or own all the original albums. With that said, let's talk about this album. It has all of her biggest hits, which weren't many but nonetheless they were still great. One of the few women in hard rock who actually rocked and had a great voice (i.e. Lita Ford, blech!) mixed with her beauty (see the videos for "Metal Queen" and "Under Your Spell" and you'll know what I mean), this album still holds up today with any other hard rock MALE artists from the 80s work, and the songs on this set prove it. It shows you what a great a voice she really had,(still does too) from the rockers ("Lady Of The Darkest Night", "Metal Queen", "I Like My Rock Hard") to her ballads of raw emotion ("Peace on Earth", "Barely Holdin' On", "Only Human"). Her voice screams to croons to operatic howls, oftentimes all in one song. She's the best.Back to the album, for a greatest hits album, it still manages to contain a few clunkers, most notably "Texas Outlaw", a duet with a guy that I've never heard of, as well as "Hands On" and "Sweet Talk", they are especially lifeless. They should have been tossed in favour of "Under Your Spell" from her 1984 debut THE LEE AARON PROJECT, or even her duet with Helix vocalist Brian Vollmer ("Look Me Straight in the Heart"). So this compared with the amount of low quality songs that DID make the cut bring this album's star rating down a lot. But you can't deny the quality music that IS here. Her voice is never better than on "Barely Holdin' On", it's a great example of what I was talking about earlier with her voice changing dynamic over and over throughout the song. After her 1994 album EMOTIONAL RAIN, which I also recommend you check out, if you can find it, Lee Aaron changed musical direction drasticaly. Last I heard she was doing jazz and swing music, with no intenions of doing another rock album, exemplified in her 2000 release SLICK CHICK. As of 2004/2005 she has been doing pop music, so I have heard, and has a new album of pop songs out now. Seek it out if you wish. But for those of you who just wanna rock and remember her rock n' roll days (and miss them) this is the album you need to own

Album:

On March 25, Canadian songstress LEE AARON returns to the scene with her hotly anticipated new album "Fire And Gasoline".Aaron was one of the 'metal Queens' of the '80s with albums like 'Metal Queen', 'Call of the Wild' and 'Bodyrock' cementing her female-fronted melodic hard rock status. But later she concentrated in other styles, and considering her last release took place in 2004 and was a very much jazzy pop based album, it's a nice surprise that "Fire And Gasoline" marks Aaron's return to rock n' roll. The first track is entitled "Tomboy" and one thing is pretty clear already at this early stage; "Fire and Gasoline" has nothing to do with jazz anymore. On the other hand it's also not metal a la 'Metal Queen' either. The new longplayer is a solid Rock album that sounds like a rougher version of Robin Beck."Tomboy", a song originally written for Aaron's daughter, is a rocker with a lot of power, actually it's real empowerment for being yourself and being self-confident.A kind of new territory is "Wanna Be", a bubble-gum rock song that has some well-done hooks."Bittersweet" instead is a true rockin' track that comes with a great melody, while "50 Miles" has a far more dark vibe. Lee Aaron's voice fits very well to this kind of tracks. I actually was reminded of the Contraband's 'All the Way From Memphis' when it listened to "50 Miles". Maybe it was the chorus that let this thought grow in my mind."Nothing Says Everything" is perhaps the more melodic hard rock cut on the CD, a song that feels like a track from Heart crossed with the present more edgy Robin Beck.Title track "Fire And Gasoline" also go in the same vein yet with a more modern groove, and some traces of Lee's hard rocking '80s sound is found on "Heart Fix"."Nothing Says Everything" is a solid mid-tempo again in a style of Robin Beck or Fiona last works, then "Find The Love" end the album with some kind of relax, not exactly a ballad."Fire And Gasoline" is the return of Lee Aaron to the Rock field, not 'metallic' as in the Eighties but far better than what I have it expected to be considering her last works. But that was more than ten years ago, and seems the 'metal Queen' is back to reclaim her crown. It's great to have her voice back, a good 'fuel' for a good day.

Album:

Just when I thought that 2017 was an amazing year for new music, along comes 2018. I am literally buried in rock solid releases that are fighting for my ipod time. I will also proudly point out that among these fantastic new records (YES, I still refer to them as records!) is a healthy dose of Canadian rock and metal. This is from both new and classic acts. One such case in point is Lee Aaron‘s Diamond Baby Blues, set to be released April 27th.I was introduced to Lee Aaron in early 1984, around the release of her Metal Queen album. As a fourteen year old proud Canadian metalhead, copies of both Metal Queen and her 1982 debut album The Lee Aaron Project were completely worn out in my boom box (is that even a term anymore?). I remember clearly her free concert atop of Hamilton’s Jackson Square shopping centre, as I was far too young to see her in the clubs back then.Luckily, I was nineteen and in college when she released one of her best efforts, 1989’s Bodyrock. I probably saw her half a dozen times during that period, including a front row centre spot at my college pub, The Arnie. Ahhhhh, the beer soaked memories of that show. Lee, for those who may not be familiar is the real deal. An absolutely killer vocalist, with the power to peel paint and send shivers up your spine. It seems that Canada’s own Metal Queen has serious plans for 2018. It appears the Lee Aaron Band will be traversing the country and the world as they get ready to promote Diamond Baby Blues. If you see a show in your town, get off your ass and get a ticket. Sean Kelly (guitar), Dave Reimer (bass) and John Cody (drums) are as solid a band as you will ever find. If you’re in doubt, just have a listen to this new record. What a record! After a dozen (maybe more) complete listens, I will go on record to say that Diamond Baby Blues is far and away Lee Aaron‘s best release since Bodyrock! In fact, it might just be better. Opening with her latest video, “Diamond Baby“, the hook is set and set hard. The band kicks in with a punch you in the gut descending riff, Lee‘s vocals soar through the mix with such intensity. Speaking of intensity, Kelly‘s solo here is sheer brilliance. Track one is a home run! Before getting too deep into the review, I should point out that Diamond Baby Blues is 12 tracks, 7 covers and 5 originals. I spoke briefly to Sean Kelly and he told me, “this is an old school way of making an album, finding great songs for a great singer to sing and then Lee makes them her own“.Make no mistake, this is very different from the stereotypical “covers” albums that many bands have dialed in. What Lee and the band did is pick out some songs that fit completely with the vibe and flavour of the originals they were writing. The covers chosen were not based on commercial appeal, some of them I have never even heard before, and the band created a very “cohesive” sounding blues rock album. The Deep Purple classic “Mistreated” sounds so thick, heavy and bluesy. Total goosebumps and Sean Kelly sounds like a kid in a candy store on this one. You can almost feel him smiling as he gets to let loose on those Purple guitar licks.“American High” is the second original track. A snotty little bluesy rocker with a big arena fist pumping sing along chorus. The world could use many more like this. Refreshing to hear melodic rock songs that are FUN.“I’m A Woman” is next. The album is called Diamond Baby BLUES for a reason. Here, Lee lets rip with a cover of Koko Taylor. Pure blues in all it’s pretty glory. If this vocal doesn’t send shivers up your spine, get to the hospital, as there is something wrong with you.Following on, “Miss Mercy” is a signature Lee Aaron rocker. This track could have seamlessly been included on Bodyrock or Some Girls Do. If new rock was actually played on mainstream radio, I would suggest this as the second single.“The Best Thing” is this album’s Power Ballad and it’s just huge! Clocking in at over 6 minutes, it’s an emotional gut-wrenching break up song with a message. Great lyrics, great melody and just a great song all around.“Black Cat” is that “Black Cat”! Janet Jackson‘s 1990 #1 hit single has never sounded cooler. I have always thought that song was a killer rock song in disguise. I understand that Sean Kelly suggested this one and God bless him. This is absolutely my favourite cover on the record. Janet Jackson meets the Metal Queen! The next song is “Hard Road”. I don’t know about you, but I love it when bands choose to cover a tune that is completely unknown to my ears. For one thing, it allows me to judge the song without comparison. However, I then get to uncover the original and sometimes I get totally turned on to something new. Lee‘s cover of the Stevie Wright‘s track is pretty true to the original and a solid barn burning rocker. Thanks for the tip Lee! I have already been digging into Stevie‘s back catalogue.Since the release of Bodyrock album, Lee has always had a great (if not cheeky) sense of humour when it comes to matters of everyone’s favourite three letter word. In ’89, it was “Whatcha Do To My Body“. In ’91, it was “Sex With Love“. Now in 2018, the cheekiness remains with “In The Bedroom“.“Cut Way Back” is a wickedly fun blues number that works so well with Lee‘s vocals, but also with her sense of humour. Originally written and released in 2004 on Tom Hambridge‘s Bang and Roll album, Lee and the boys seem to be having fun with this one. That fun is shared with the listener.“You’re No Good” is a great song with staying power. Originally written for Dee Dee Warwick in 1963, it has been covered over and over again. Betty Everett, Dusty Springfield, Linda Rondstadt, Van Halen have coverd it. Lee Aaron now takes a swing at this classic. One more traditional blues cover to close out the record. “My Babe” mixes Little Walter with Lee‘s sultry blues tone vocals.Final Thoughts: I absolutely am loving this album. I know the term all killer no filler is a ridiculous cliche but I am loving every song on this album. It totally plays through as a complete record and in today’s bubblegum world of disposable singles this is both rare and damn well refreshing. Lee Aaron’s best album? Maybe so. Pretty cool to be saying that thirty six years since her debut album dropped.

Album:

Eighties metal Queen LEE AARON will release tomorrow her first official live album: “Power, Soul, and Rock N’ Roll – Live in Germany”, featuring a career-spanning set that highlights the vocal power, hit song-craft and dynamic stage presence that has defined Aaron as one of the world’s great rock n’ roll performers.Recorded live over 2 nights on the Fire And Gasoline German tour, ‘Power, Soul, and Rock N’ Roll’ captures both the intimate setting of a packed music hall in Nuremberg, as well as her killer open-air performance in 2017 for 20,000 fans at the famed Bang Your Head festival, Balingen. The set includes Lee’s classic anthems like ‘Metal Queen’, ‘Barely Holdin’ On’, ‘Powerline’, ‘Hot To Be Rocked’, and ‘Whatcha Do To My Body’. Fans are treated to a stunning version of Deep Purple’s Mistreated along with new fan favorites from Aaron’s “return to rock” offerings on 2016’s ‘Fire and Gasoline’ and 2018’s ‘Diamond Baby Blues’.With Sean Kelly on guitar, Dave Reimer on bass, John Cody on drums, a band whose resume includes work with Nelly Furtado, Bryan Adams, BTO to name but a few), Lee and her band inspire the spirit of great ‘live’ classic rock albums of the 80s with performances that move and live and breathe.‘Power, Soul, and Rock N’ Roll’ is a ‘no fixes and no tricks’ off the floor recording of two very good performances in front of Lee’s much loved German fans.Recorded with a clean sound, and expertly mixed by legendary Canadian producer John Webster, the albums delivers the best of Aaron’s career, that being classic metal, commercial hard rock, and bluesy rock.

Album:

Multi-platinum, award-winning Canadian vocalist Lee Aaron is back with a collection of 12 brand-new originals that invite you to tune into the heartbeat of your personal radio dial and hear the best of what this rock ‘n’ roll legend has to offer.Like the FM stations that once ruled the airwaves, Radio On! is full of classic, melodic rock hooks, nasty guitar riffs, big harmonies, and inspired songwriting. Themes explored on the album include: mortality (“Radio On,” “Twenty One”), materialism (“Devil’s Gold”), empowerment (“Vampin'”), addiction (“Wasted”), love (“Cmon,” “Had Me At Hello”), and society (“Soul Breaker,” “Russian Doll”).Lee Aaron - Radio On!There’s a big fat rock riff and great groove to open up ‘Vampin” and some smooth melodies to follow. With four albums in the last five and a bit years Lee Aaron is certainly back and much like on 2016’s ‘Fire and Gasoline’ and 2018’s ‘Diamond Baby Blues’ she’s in great voice and has the songs to back her up.If you loved that opener then this is certainly one to pick up as it kicks along nicely, with first the radio friendly blues-tinged hard rock of ‘Soul Breaker’ which has a real vintage Pat Benatar feel, before the wonderfully melodic and rather ‘blue sky’ elation of “C’Mon’ which has a poppy aspect. That rather fine pair are followed by the irresistible chug of ‘Mama Don’t Remember.’ In truth it’s all rather impressive. It’s the sounds of yesteryear’s Rock radio that this album promised and actually it manages to more than deliver on that count; and whilst you might wish for a little more ‘crunch’ at times the AOR focused production does capture the spirit of things.Title track ‘Radio On!’ is another catchy poppier number with a big ‘hit the highway and drive’ chorus and nice riff and one of my top picks. ‘Soho Crawl’ adds some real rock and roll flavour and ‘Devil’s Gold’ takes things down, nicely changing the mood and giving Lee a real chance to show you what those pipes can do on a slower number. And the quality bar is kept high by the quirkier ‘Russian Doll’ which has a wonderful swing and isn’t afraid to stand out.‘Great Big Love’ is the only track here really that doesn’t grab me instantly, but it’s full of swagger and sees Lee pull out another great vocal but I just didn’t connect; ‘Wasted’ however is another story – the slow number that has echoes of Heart and really works for me and builds to a soaring crescendo beautifully. We close out with the smoking ‘Had Me at Hello’ and the piano of ballad ‘Twenty One’ – you really have to hear this one, it could well be one of my favourite ballads in years. As they say in the press release – “Like your favorite radio DJ coming over the airwaves on a hot summer night, Lee Aaron invites you to set your dial for a genuine rock ‘n’ roll listening experience…” It’s a great listen.

Album:

Originally only available last year via her website (and featured in exclusive at 0dayrox) LEE AARON‘s “Almost Christmas” is being reissued by Metalville with the addition of two previously unreleased recordings.Almost Christmas contains lovingly curated tunes – from the foot-stomping rock ‘n’ roll ride of the feature track “It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas” (Pet Shop Boys) to the classic “Baby Please Come Home” to a sassy version of “Zat You Santa Claus?” – winding down with the introspective “All I Ever Get For Christmas Is Blue” (Over The Rhine) and an a capella rendition of Joni Mitchell’s timeless “The Fiddle And The Drum”. You’ve never heard Christmas done quite like this.Lee and her band (Sean Kelly-guitar, Dave Reimer-bass, and John Cody-drums) had tossed around the notion of a Christmas album over the years, but there was always something – tours / recording / life etc. – that kept the project on the back burner. With all shows cancelled and studios shutting dow due Covid-19, there was suddenly time available. Containing 12 lovingly biting curated X-mas tunes, “Almost Christmas” rocks great.“Almost Christmas” is a varied, fun Xmas record.Aaron explains; “There’s a lot of passion and joy that went into these recordings. The album represented something really positive and hopeful that we could focus on during this unprecedented down-time. It was a gift that lifted our spirits and we hope it has the same effect on others.” Aaron is vocally in top form, and the band feels tight, classic rockin’ strong.

Album:

Lee Aaron is on a roll. The award-winning, songwriter, producer, and Canadian vocalist blazed back onto the rock scene in 2016 (after a ten-year hiatus to raise her family) with a wealth of original material and more firecracker energy than artists half her age. She’s since produced six new releases, including a live CD/DVD, with Elevate being the latest and possibly coolest addition to this renewed chapter in her illustrious career.Elevate was written during the Covid lockdown, but rather than allowing that isolation to push the band into a negative place, Lee booked a studio lockout for the fall of 2021.Elevate contains ten original tracks steeped in what has become Aaron’s signature sound: big guitar hooks, powerful, bluesy vocals, rich melodies and harmonies, and just enough sassy attitude to tip the scales.Aaron has always been known for digging a little deeper with her lyric content, and Elevate is no exception.

Line Up:

Sean Kelly – guitar
Dave Reimer – bass
John Cody – drums
