It is widely believed that every so often all the right pieces fall into just the right places, at just the right time. You can’t predict it, you can’t create it, and you can’t stop it. Red Monday exemplifies that belief to the fullest. What are the chances that songwriter/guitarist Jim Miller and singer Rick Harris would be at the same club, standing next to each other after a band break up of 25 plus years? What are the odds that Jim and drummer Michael McCarron would talk on the phone later that same week after being bandmates almost 20 years prior? How could an original lyric sheet, long since forgotten, be found and used for a newly penned song on the exact date inscribed on that sheet 25 years later? These are just a few of the many coincidences surrounding the formation of Red Monday.Red Monday started as a writing project for Jim Miller, who grew increasingly frustrated with the local music scene’s emphasis on cover material. “How many more bands covering Journey & Foreigner songs can possibly exist?” he often asked. He began writing material that was melodic, yet powerful, influenced by bands from his childhood heroes. Jim immediately realized that Rick Harris would be the perfect voice for his project. Jim showed Rick his new songs, and over the following months refined them with Rick’s unique voice at the forefront.Things moved quickly from there. As Jim felt Rick was the perfect voice for these songs, he felt Michael McCarron was the perfect drummer. A technical whiz with powerhouse chops, Mike is also a talented recording engineer, arranger, and owner of Octagon recording studio. With Mike’s virtuoso bassist Jeff Kyloe in tow, the four moved into Octagon and began to lay the tracks down. Jim’s vision was quickly becoming a reality, even better than he imagined.Enlisting the services of Master Recording Engineer Larry Millas (Ides of March), Miller, Harris, McCarron & Kylloe recorded additional parts at World Stage studios, where Millas tweaked, mixed and mastered the 12 original compositions. The results are unforgettable and moving, with words and melodies that get into your soul and rhythms injected with rock, soul, pop, country, and blues- often all at once.It became glaringly obvious the project would not only have the makings of a great CD compilation of original material, but have the strong possibility of being an actual band. The newly formed Red Monday has recently added the extremely gifted guitarist, Joaquin Mercado to the fold, solidifying the lineup for live performances.Marketing and Communication Director Jim Nonneman has captured Red Monday’s music and spirit and created stunning artwork, photography, and web design which serves as the perfect accompaniment. As a side note, Jim Nonneman was also at that same club on the same night Jim Miller met Rick Harris … All the right pieces, in all the right places, at just the right time.

Fans of classic rock, Midwestern Americana and 80s American hard rock should take a listen to the album via the showcase on this site. They might just be another new band worth adding to your collection. There are a lot of big names releases this year already with plenty more to come. It’s just one of those banner years. But we must not ignore the newer bands and indie releases as it isn’t just the big boys that can deliver. One such act is Illinois rockers Red Monday. Formed around guitarist/songwriter and producer Jim Miller and mixed and mastered by Ides Of March’s Larry Millas, with guest spots from Millas and fellow Ideas man Scott May; Red Monday produce a brand of guitar driven classic rock with an organic Midwestern feel. Sometimes the guitars break out a little more such as the spirited opener She’s On Fire and the fast paced Sanctuary and bar room rocker You Move Me.Elsewhere on the album the sound diversifies into Tom Petty, John Kilzer and John Mellencamp territory, albeit with a more prominent guitar presence. It’s quite a varied album, but the best quality here is the production – it’s a big sound for an indie release and Millas has delivered a very balanced mix. There’s a lot to like about this album. The only small issue I have is with the vocals. Singer Rick Harris has a tone that’s not for everyone and I think takes away from a couple of songs. On others it’s no issue at all, but surprisingly Jim Miller takes lead on the upbeat southern rocker Broken Promises and I find myself preferring his voice over the main one.That’s a small issue though and one which different folks are going to have different views on.
