Bio:

Spread Eagle is an American hard rock band from New York City. After only a few months of rehearsal they were signed by MCA/Universal Records. They released two albums Spread Eagle (1990) and Open To The Public (1993) and disbanded in 1995.In 2006 the band reunited. In January 2011 the band officially announced their new line-up and according to bassist and founding member Rob De Luca there are plans for touring in North America and Europe. In the late 1980s, founding members Paul DiBartolo, Rob De Luca and Tommi Gallo were playing in a Boston based band called Bang.In 1989 guitarist Paul Di Bartolo (real name Salvadore Poe) traveled to New York where he met singer Ray West. Paul was so impressed by his voice, that he immediately convinced bassist Rob De Luca and drummer Tommi Gallo to follow him to New York and start a new band with Ray which became Spread Eagle. After only a few months of rehearsing they signed with MCA/Universal Records. As they were signed while still rehearsing for their first gig, they wrote most songs for their debut 1990 debut album Spread Eagle in the studio. Receiving little promotion from MCA the band produced the video for "Scratch Like A Cat" using their own money and with the help of friends. The band spent a lot of time on the road before recording their follow-up album and began burning out. First to leave was drummer Tommi Gallo. He was replaced by Kirke Blankenship who did not stay for long and played drums on one track (High Horses) of the second album Open To The Public. That album was then recorded with session drummers John Macaluso from TNT and Thommy Price from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.Open to the Public was released in 1993. Dave Femia played the drums on the following tour.[7] The new record did not meet the expectations of their fans and Grunge took over the music scene. So in 1995 Spread Eagle resigned and split up.Ray West turned his back to music business for a while. He is singing in a band called All Pointz West or shortly APW.Paul DiBartolo changed his name to Salvadore Poe after writing and recording songs for Swedish singer Lisa Ekdahl who was his wife at that time. He is fascinated by Indian culture and spends much of his time there.Rob De Luca started a new band called Ouijipig, later another one called OF EARTH.He's also worked as studio bassist and touring bassist for many bands including UFO, Sebastian Bach, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Helmet and George Lynch. There is nothing known about Tommi Gallo, a former member of the bands Iron Rage and Bang, since he left Spread Eagle. In 2006 Rob De Luca and Ray West started Spread Eagle again.Their debut album which had been out of print for over 10 years was remastered and re-released by the small independent label Lovember Records. They started touring in 2006 with Chris Caffery on guitar and John Macaluso on drums.Due to basically everybody being busy touring with other bands, there were only a few shows. They found new guitarist Dennis Kimak and Rob De Luca returned to New York from touring with Sebastian Bach and UFO. In December 2010 they started touring the Northeast of America. Their debut album was recently voted as one of the top 20 glam albums of all time (along with Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Hanoi Rocks and Skid Row):In 2012 guitarist Dennis Kimak quit and was replaced by Ziv Shalev who played the first 2 shows with Spread Eagle in December 2012.

Album:

One of the sleaziest albums of the genre is definitely Spread Eagle's self-titled debut. By looking at the song titles, with names such as "Back On The Bitch" and "Hot Sex", I think anyone could figure out what they are in for. This was the first of the two albums released by Spread Eagle in the early '90s, followed by Open To The Public three years later. This album is pure sleaze from start to finish and delivers a powerful punch. It's one of those CDs with a 'fuck you' in your face attitude. It was created by singer Ray West, guitarist Paul DiBartolo, bassist Rob DeLuca and drummer Tommi Gallo and includes a mix of screeching/screaming vocals, shredding guitars, fast drums and a heavy melodic bass. Songs such as "Scratch Like A Cat","Broken City", "Spread Eagle", "Suzy Suicide", and "Switchblade Serenade" are real rockers! There is also a haunting ballad called "Thru These Eyes", which is another great song on the album. This album isn't a rock/pop mix, it is all sleaze and hard rock, in the vein of bands such as Faster Pussycat and Skid Row. Spread eagle was originally released in 1990 (and later reissued in 2006), which was the beginning of the end for hair metal, so unfortunately this album never made much of an impact on the music industry and consequently never got much recognition. It was just one of the many albums of that time that got lost in the shuffle. You can still find the album online for a fair price though, and it is worth the money!

Album:

SPREAD EAGLE second album “Open To The Public” in its Japanese Edition including a bonus track. While most melodic hard rock bands circa 1993 were already drop by their major record labels (especially in America), SPREAD EAGLE managed to release this second album via MCA.SPREAD EAGLE’s self-titled resulted a cracking platter of hard rock, and this second effort “Open To The Public” is just as good as the first. Obviously with a more notorious early ’90s sound to it, the songwriting inspiration still is firmly planted in the Eighties.Indeed, kudos to SPREAD EAGLE; they never caved in to the grunge movement, instead, the songs on “Open To The Public” are driven by crunchy sharp guitars, pounding drums and the gritty vocals / gang choruses which are the trademark of traditional US melodic hard.

Album:

Titled “Subway To The Stars“, this is the first SPREAD EAGLE album in over 26 years to be released by Frontiers Music on August 9th. just appeared in Japan today with a bonus track. The songs for “Subway To The Stars” were put together in the Music Building in NYC, which is the exact same place where the songs for their cult-classic hard rocking debut album were rehearsed and written.Recording took place at Studio E in Brooklyn, New York with Grammy Award-winning engineer Tom Camuso.Spread Eagle burst upon the hard rock scene of the late 80’s / early 90’s playing a brand of rock that hailed straight from the mean streets of New York City. When Paul DiBartolo (guitar), Rob De Luca (bass) and Tommi Gallo (drums) moved to NY and met up with Ray West (vocals), Spread Eagle was born. The group was quickly snatched up and signed to MCA / Universal Records, then sent straight into the legendary Record Plant studios to record an album.Their self-titled debut was produced by Charlie Gambetta and featured a gritty and dangerous sound with wailing vocals and razor sharp guitar, as heard on songs such as ‘Switchblade Serenade’, ‘Scratch Like A Cat’ and ‘Broken City’.Four years later, after therelease and touring of their second album, ‘Open To The Public’ (also produced by Gambetta), the band took an extended break and went about their own personal projects.Spread Eagle reformed in 2006 under the direction of Ray West and Rob De Luca (who has also worked with UFO and Sebastian Bach), plus new members in Ziv Shalev (guitar) and Rik De Luca (drums). The band has been together ever since but did not start making a new album until their recent signing to Frontiers Music. The recording then took place at Studio E in Brooklyn, NY with Grammy Award winning engineer Tom Camuso.‘Subway To The Stars’ does not disappoint and picks up right where Spread Eagle originally left off all those years ago.Title track “Subway to the Stars” blasts since the first bits with a modern guitar sound and a hard hitting rhythm section, while the vocals are open and clear. Follower ’29th of February’ is highly melodious, catchy yet razor, there’s a rollercoaster in ‘Sound of Speed’, then a dark atmosphere for ‘Dead Air’.“Grand Scam” rocks with groove and a swirling guitar line, then they try a midtempo melody in ‘More Wolf Than Lamb’, ‘Cut Through’ makes justice to its title, while ‘Little Serpentina’ brings to my mind a Chris Cornell solo song.‘Antisocial Butterfly’ is a pretty heavy, groove monster, I remember a Gilby clarke song sounding a lot like the melodious ‘Gutter Rhymes for Valentines’, then for ‘Solitaire’ Spread Eagle pick up the acoustics for a cool campfire song, however the lyrics are quite somber. In my book Spread Eagle always was a different beast than the ‘regular band’ from the American Hard Rock scene, and on “Subway To The Stars” they remain faithful to this premise.Their songs are not your ‘meat & potato’ rockers, there’s some kind of ‘subtle essence’ to this brand of hard rock, and that alone deserve a proper listen to all their albums. “Subway To The Stars” is not the exception.

Line Up:

Ray West - Lead Vocals
Rob De Luca - Bass, Vocals
Ziv Shalev - Guitars
Rik De Luca - Drums, Percussion
