Universal Music Japan has started this year another campaign of their ‘HR/HM 1000‘ series, that meaning the reissue of long time out of print albums from their Hard Rock / Heavy Metal catalog at the price of 1000 Yen = about 9,5 USD.As part of the 2022 HR-HM 1000 Vol.4 series it was reissued the long out of print BLUE TEARS debut album “Blue Tears“, a wonderful disc of ’80s melodic rock / AOR. Despite of being released via major label MCA, “Blue Tears” resulted criminally underrated and deserved better promotion.Frontman, multi-instrumentalist and almost sole writer for the band, Gregg Fulkerson, had a great, passionate voice, especially on the ballads where his voice matches perfectly with the emotional tones of the songs he wrote. Listen to a track like ‘True Romance’ and you will hear it for yourself. With a sound production like a cross between 1986 Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, this record actually produced a few minor hits upon it’s release; ‘Rockin’ With The Radio’ and ‘Innocent Kiss’. Both are fantastic, upbeat melodic rockers. The band originated back in 1983, originally named Sahara, and had a bit of fame in the late 1980’s in the club circuit and thanks to some local stations picking up some of their demos.By the time this album released this genre of music was on it’s way out and the band never reached the fame they truly deserved and undoubtedly would have gotten if they had released the album a few short years earlier.

Album:
One of the greatest 1990 AOR albums, BLUE TEARS self-titled official debut album “Blue Tears” has been digitally remastered by Bad Reputation Records. Founded by songwriter Gregg Fulkerson, the aim for this album was ‘big, bold, bombastic sound production’, not far from Def Leppard’s ‘Hysteria’, however Blue Tears is much more AOR.This is ’80s Arena Rock of the highest order. The first iteration of what would become Blue Tears began in the fall of 1982, when Fulkerson (vocals, guitar), was a senior at Chester County High School and Mike Spears (bass), Bryan Hall (rhythm guitar) and Phil Johns were students at Freed Hardeman University. The band was originally called Misfit. Through the next several years the band had a couple of name changes (NonStop, Sahara) and several vocalists and drummers came and went. The band made several recordings in Gregg’s basement, but the first official recording was of their song “Stay With Me” which was recorded at the Castle Recording Studio in Nashville, TN. “Stay With Me” received much regional radio station airplay, and peaked at #2 on 92.3 FM Jackson, TN.The combination of radio airplay, devoted fans and multiple sold-out concerts at the Paramount and Malco theatres caught the attention of record industry professionals. One of these recordings landed on the desk of a Los Angeles-based record company. They signed a recording contract with MCA Records soon after. The band also changed their name to Blue Tears just two months prior to releasing their debut album. Blue Tears was made up of founding members Gregg Fulkerson, Mike Spears and Bryan Hall. They were re-joined by Charlie Lauderdale on drums. The debut album was released in June 1990 with lead single “Rockin’ With the Radio” getting a music video. A second single, “Innocent Kiss” also received heavy promotion. The album was originally titled “Thunder in the Night” and was promoted as such but was eventually changed to a self-titled release.Unfortunately, the band was dismissed as just another glam metal act in the genre’s fading wave. Blue Tears entered the studio in 1991 and banged out new tracks for a second album. However, Rock music & industry in America started to change and MTV’s got re-vamped, so MCA decided to not release the follow up album.A great slice of hugely-produced ’80s music, with very good songs. Then don’t make albums like this anymore.

Album:
The late Gregg Fulkerson was a talented rock songwriter collaborating with various record companies, artists, and movie soundtracks. His own vehicle to show his melodic hard rock passion was BLUE TEARS, the band Gregg founded in the ’80s.Actually Blue Tears managed to release a self-titled album back in 1990 on a major company, but unfortunately the label (MCA) dropped the band, as they did with most of this type of acts from their rooster – in 1991.Well, Greeg was a prolific dude, and BLUE TEARS already had the songs for that sophomore CD that never was. A bunch of songs in fact, all professionaly recorded in pre-production quality - really good indeed.Fortunately an Aussie label finally released in 2005 all these late ’80s / early 90s BLUE TEARS recordings into two separate volumes. As requested, here we have “Dancin’ On The Back Streets“, packing some terrific tunes for all classic Melodic Hard Rock fans rejoice.BLUE TEARS is pure, clean n’ polished melodic rocking bliss, not afraid for occasional harder things, rich in harmonies and awesome choruses. Oh yeah, BLUE TEARS presents here some of the best songs Bon Jovi or Def Leppard never wrote.Lovers of the genre > you can’t go wrong here: “Mad, Bad & Dangerous” is a melodic paradise.Musically speaking, ”Dancin’ on the Backstreets” is very similar to the self titled debut album. Furthermore, I would say that the quality of the songs meets, or perhaps exceeds that debut by a tad. This album and ”Mad, Bad, & Dangerous” are a collection of both previously unreleased, non-album tracks and tracks that were intended for the second Blue Tears album – some of these taped in the late ’80s.The songs are built around thick, catchy chorus lines, not far removed at all from Def Leppard. Keyboards help to give the music an upbeat feel to them. Still, the guitar work and the excellent lead vocals of Gregg Fulkerson are the most important components of the music, and are at the forefront of the sound. And yes, Fulkerson could easily be mistaken for Jon Bon Jovi during several of these songs. The music of Blue Tears is your textbook definition of straight forward, fun, anthemic melodic hard rock from the 1980’s. Having said that, there are a fair number of flashy, yet well done guitar solos scattered throughout the songs. Kiss and Tell, All Cried Out, and Slip and Fall sound strangely similar to Pump era Aerosmith, a bit of a bluesy deviation from the bulk of their material. The band pulls this off quite well, and it serves to add some variation to the album. The band’s strong suit is definitely energetic, anthem-like melodic rock. Each of the uptempo tracks has that catchy, arena quality to it, backed up by instantly recognizable chorus lines.Of course, what would an album like this be without power ballads? The obligatory tracks here are Storm In My Heart, Strong, Dream of Me, and Yours. Storm in My Heart is good enough that it would have likely been a big success back in the day. Strong is an acoustic piece that builds momentum in places, then expands into a full choir during the chorus lines; excellent and emotional songwriting.Dream of Me is an atmospheric number that contains well performed acoustic pieces and one of the more emotional vocal performances from Gregg. Also, there are some very emotional, Neal Schon like guitar solos to be heard in this song, giving it a noticeable Journey flavor. There are a few interesting notes worth mentioning about some of the material on this disc. Fans of the super group Contraband will recognize the track Loud Guitars, Fast Cars, and Wild, Wild Women. Gregg and bassist Mike Spears originally wrote this song as a joke, but their management gave it to Contraband who released the song as their first single. The video for this song actually got some decent airplay on MTV when it was released.Slip and Fall was intended for the never released second Blue Tears album, but instead, it was used by label mates Every Mother’s Nightmare on their Wake Up Screaming album. When first listening to this album, the track A Date With Destiny seemed to have Bat Out of Hell (Meatloaf) written all over it. After some reading, I learned that Gregg wrote the song for Meatloaf, as he and Blue Tears had the same manager at the time. Meatloaf never used the track, and so here it is on Dancin’ on The Backstreets.Blue Tears delivers quality material with this album. How come Blue Tears wasn’t massive in 1990 is a crime. Anyone who owns the band’s 1990 debut album or is a general fan of 80’s classy melodic rock need to listen to “Dancin’ On The Back Streets”.

Misty Blue also gets my nod as one of the better midtempo numbers, with some tasteful shreds and a killer solo balancing out the balladesque music at hand.Of the 2 volumes from BLUE TEARS unreleased music, this ”Mad, Bad & Dangerous” is the more midtempo / AOR / ballad infused, with half of the songs being rockers, half slower songs. All good stuff. If you prefer the hard rockin’ side of BLUE TEARS, then grab the other volume titled ”Dancin’ On The Backstreets”, showcasing more songs of this ilk.Of course, if you like both of these albums that are put together with unreleased tracks from the Blue Tears vault, you’ve got to hunt down the band’s 1990 self titled debut album if you don’t already have it.

Album:
BLUE TEARS, after finally getting released the recorded material for their second album that never crystallzed back in 1991 – the two volumes we featured yesterday ‘Dancin’ On The Back Streets’ and ‘Mad, Bad & Dangerous’ – made an arrangement with AOR Heaven Records for a new album.Titled “The Innocent Ones“, and released in 2006 in the midst on the melodic hard rock / AOR resurgence, BLUE TEARS’ comeback was received with open arms by all fans from the genre. Here’s as requested the CD now out of print and hard to find. After all these years, leader Gregg Fulkerson’s voice acquired a certain raspiness with age, and BLUE TEARS music evolved into a more mature, classic rock sound. Think Nineties Bon Jovi meets Jim Peterik. There’s much more acoustic guitar in the mix than before, but if there’s something BLUE TEARS didn’t lost is the catchy songwriting.Yeah, maybe not a party / feel-good vibe anymore, but the arena-sized choruses are still here all over “The Innocent Ones”. Fulkerson was an expert for hooks and melodies, and you’ll find both in abundance here.As expected, ”The Innocent Ones” is a different album than its 1990 self-titled predecessor, so it may be best to view this album as coming from a new band – Fulkerson is the only founding member in this recording. Still, we are very pleased with the lyrics and the music on this album. Even with their debut album, Blue Tears songs are very positive, and often tell a personal story. The same holds true on this album; no changes there. We can always appreciate a rock band (especially one of Blue Tears’ era) that can come up with lyrics deeper than screwing, getting plastered, and kicking someone’s azz on Saturday night.Musically, the Keep The Faith / These Days era Bon Jovi mixed with the more rocking side of Bruce Springsteen’s older material is an unmistakable trait of all the songs on this album. One exception to this rule is the acoustic track All The Way Home, which brings to mind the band Gregg was part of previously, Attraction 65, whom released an album in 2003. The sheer emotion that Gregg sings with on this song is just too much not to appreciate.Drive opens with a rocking vibe, followed by the anthemic Let It Rain with lots of harmonies throw in. She Wants to Be a Star is a favorite, that actually does harken back to the debut Blue Tears album. It’s an uplifting rocker with a big chorus line that will get stuck in your mind after the first listen. In fact, in this album most of the material is of the hard rocking variety. The three ballads on this album are actually very solid; more ‘midpaced’ than balladry indeed. The other 11 tracks are very inspiring hard rock / melodic rock / classic rock. The debut Blue Tears album is often described as a mix of Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Well, The Innocent Ones retains a Bon Jovi influence, albeit its ’90s version. Still, the songs on this album are very melodic in nature, with catchy chorus lines also to be found on most songs. However, they aren’t as over the top, but more earthy. Once you really give the lyrics a chance and allow the songs to really come to life, you’ll surely appreciate this ”The Innocent Ones”.For a 16 year layoff, Fulkerson did a fine job in serving the Blue Tears name well. Although this album follows a different path than previous material of the band, the songwriting and lyrical content is able to stand on it’s own. And while production and mix could have been better, we are sure Gregg wanted this more ‘stripped’ sound, straight / few effects.”The Innocent Ones” is a different BLUES TEARS, yet strong and good with its own merits. Unfortunately Gregg Fulkerson died not so long after this release, so this is the final studio work from this accomplished musician.

Fans of quality Melodic Hard Rock will have no problem remembering the 1990 debut from Blue Tears. With its loving mix of Bon Jovi meets Def Leppard hard-hitting riffs and melodies, this was one band that really should have scaled the heights.Back in 2005, the band were invited to play the second ever edition of the Firefest Festival. Gregg and the boys put on one hell of a show for their one and only ever full-electric set in Europe. Also included is an Attraction 65 song from Gregg’s solo project.Sure, it was raw and wild, but the adoring fans loved every minute. Now that fateful night is presented here, in all its untouched/no overdubs glory.Of course, main man Greg Fulkerson died tragically in April 2009. “Live In The UK” represents a chance to see him and the boys honouring their legacy, up close, raw and personal. “Live At The UK” will be released digital and as a ltd. edition CD (300 copies only) which will be exclusively sold via shop.prideandjoy.de and wholesale.Date of release 15 May 2026.
