Norway’s Razorbats got international attention when they released their debut album Camp Rock in 2015 and critics from all over Europe, Australia and the US praised their unique ability to blend classic rock, powerpop and punk in a new and exiting way. The lead single Kids of the 70s got a lot of airplay on rock radio across Europe and college radio in the US, in addition to national radio back home. The band shared the stage with bands like Rise Agains, CJ Ramone, The Dogs and The Dandy Warhols before they embarked on their first UK and Scandinavian tour. Camp Rock was named album of the year by Glitter 2 Gutter in the US and featured on several best-of list for 2015 all over the world.The band returns with a new album entitled “Razorbats II” on February 16th 2018. Their first on Rob Mules Records and including the singles “Social Rejects” and “Sister Siberia”.THE STORY SO FAR...The band first formed i 2012 under the name The Heat with singer Even Berg, guitarists Kjetil F. Wevling and Erland Nyborg, bass player Stig Sætevik and drummer Knut S. S. Wettre. They released a 7" single called Ruben's Lost Control that Christmas before changing name to Razorbats the following spring.In the summer of 2013 the band recorded their first EP under the new name. Turbojugend label Self Destruct Records in the US somehow heard the self-produced EP and wanted to release it worldwide. Bring It On was released in June 2014 and national radio in Norway quickly picked up on the song Born in Blood. The band suddenly had a nice little radio-hit on their hands and Razorbats had arrived!Even before the Bring It On EP had been released the band had started work on their debut album. This time recruiting producer Kai Christoffersen, who was known for his work with retro rockers Orango and for winning the Norwegian Grammy (Spellemann) for his work with Ila Auto. Before work began the band parted ways with guitarist Erland Nyborg and they continued as a four-piece for a while. Camp Rock was finally released in September 2015 and received fantastic reviews from all over the world as the reputation of the album spread through the winter of 2015/16. Again national radio in Norway started playing the single titled Kids of the 70s in addition to rock radio in Europe and college radio in the US. To support the album Razorbats went on their first tour of Norway and also added dates in Sweden and the UK.In the spring of 2016 the band again went in the studio with Christoffersen to record a couple of song, this time resulting in an EP titled This High. It was released in the fall of 2016, but the band didn't tour to support it, but instead got ready to record the follow up to Camp Rock. This time things did not go as planned...Right before Christmas 2016, with most of the album done, singer Even Berg said he was leaving the band for personal reasons. The remaining member couldn't agree on what to do next, so bassist Stig Sætevik left around the same time. With half a band and half an album in the can, Razorbats was close to calling it quits. After a few weeks of soul searching drummer Knut S. S. Wettre and guitarist Kjetil F. Wevling decided to give it another go and try to find new band members.Wevling remembered a band called Hollywood Vampires, that were stirring things up a few years ago. They had a fantastic sing and frontman in Paulie Vercouteren, so he tracked him down. As it turned out Paul was a fan of Razorbats, so they met up for a talk and a few beers. Paul brought along bassist Chris Haugerud, who was in a band called Kill City Bandits, that was about to pack it in. The new lineiup quickly started rehearsing and it was just magic! This was gonna work! The guys had decided already that first night that they were gonna ad a second guitar player to the lineup. Auditions were held and Asle Tangen, previously of Babylon Bastards and She Said Destroy, joined in May 2017. During the spring and summer of 2017 the new lineup finished the follow up album to Camp Rock and played their first gigs at Gjerstad Rock Festival and Raumarock in Norway.

Razorbats made their debut in 2014 when they released the EP Bring It On through American record label Self Destructo Records. The track “Born In Blood” got a lot of radio airplay in their native Norway and the release was well received by the press. The band followed up with their first full length album titled Camp Rock in 2015 and lead single “Kids of the 70s” got picked up by rock radio throughout Europe and South America as well as college radio in the US and Canada.Of Camp Rock, Sleaze Roxx said, “If you like ’70s sounding hard rock, you should definitely pick up Camp Rock or quite simply, if you like quality hard rock, you owe it to yourself to check out Razorbats.”The This High EP is a difficult one to review, because there are only three tracks on it. All three songs follow the same ’70s groove as Camp Rock. I hear significant influences from The Stooges, T-Rex, and even the Sex Pistols. Razorbats have modernized the pre-punk sound in a way that Green Day or Blink 182 did with their version of pop-punk. Particularly, the song “This High” floats between the two eras with interesting results.Production is raw and unencumbered with overdubs or flashy effects. I concur with my predecessor’s review. If you like this style, you owe it to yourself to check out Razorbats.Looking back to when I was growing up as a young lad during the ’80s, I have come to the realization that I was simply spoiled. Many of the best hard rock and heavy metal bands were signed to big record deals and were putting out a new album every year. I remember how disappointed I was when bands would take a whopping two years between studio album releases but at least they usually released a live album during the off year to tidy you over.Prime examples would be Iron Maiden releasing 1985’s Live After Death between 1984’s Powerslave and 1986’s Somewhere In Time, and Judas Priest releasing 1987’s Priest Live! in between 1986’s Turbo and 1988’s Ram It Down. As the ’80s drew to an end, my favourite bands were starting to take longer and longer to release studio albums and now I am lucky if groups such as KISS, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest even release a new studio album within a five year span. And of course, with record sales way down compared to the platinum glory days of the ’80s, newer bands such as Diemonds, Sister Sin and Crashdïet simply can’t afford to put out a new studio album every year.This takes me to Norwegian rockers Razorbats whose guitarist Kjetil Fagerlund Wevling advised Sleaze Roxx that he can’t stand bands who release albums only every three to four years. Accordingly, Razorbats released the three song EP This High to satisfy their fans’ craving for new material while the group works on following up their stellar debut full-length album Camp Rock. Wevling also advised Sleaze Roxx that Razorbats‘ intention is not to follow trends and simply play good ol’ fashioned hard rock. Just like on Camp Rock, Razorbats offer a lot of variety with each of the three songs being pretty different from the others. My favorite hands down is the track “The Hurricane” that just happened to premiere on Sleaze Roxx last week! The song starts off with a very ’70s sounding guitar riff before some almost punk like vocals meet the listener and the song is off. Although I definitely enjoy “The Hurricane”, I would like it even better if the guitars sounded a little cleaner.Next up is the title track “This High” which is more of a punk Sum 41 type track. I don’t mind Sum 41 but none of their albums grace my record collection so it’s not exactly the type of music that I gravitate to. The This High EP closes with a song called “Born In The Fast Lane” which I would have thought would have been a fast paced rocker based on the title but instead, it’s really a ballad / slower song. This takes me to singer Even‘s vocal delivery. Sometimes, his voice really sounds great like such as when “Born In The Fast Lane” picks up a little and prior to the chorus portion of the song. However, I have a hard time getting through the beginning of “Born In The Fast Lane” when Even‘s voice simply sounds a little off at times.Overall, the This High EP is not as strong as Razorbats‘ prior album Camp Rock but it’s still a good set of songs. Nevertheless, I think that the This High EP serves its purpose since it keeps Razorbats in the limelight while the group works hard to follow up Camp Rock, which is apparently turning into a difficult album to follow up.

Norway has always been a real rock’n’roll country. Behind all the smoke from the churches burning there has been a cult of people that only wanted to party like it was 1999. If not to Turbonegro then to any other Norwegian band that grooved. And it is that chaos that RAZORBATS fit in. Now on their second album, as the title so cleverly says, we are brought even more up tempo rock. If you like bands like The Hellacopters, Imperial State Electric or any other Swedish band in that same vein you will love Norwegian RAZORBATS too. This is not the kind of music you sit still to. No sir, this is the kind you dance to. So go ahead, dance the night away because tomorrow does not exist.

It’s unbelievably six years since Swedish glam/death punks Razorbats first came into my life via their musical suckerpunch of a debut record ‘Camp Rock’. Word of how insanely catchy that eleven track tour de force was spread like wildfire across the world wide web back in 2015 and if I remember correctly it was actually an avid reader of Uber Rock (who I was writing for at the time) who sent me a message saying “whoa John you really need to check this album out, it’s like Turbonegro jamming previously unreleased Starz and Cheap Trick songs. You will love it….” And love it I did… as fast forward just a few short months and not only was ‘Camp Rock’ my favourite new album but the band were also booked to play a couple of UK shows, one of them being a headline slot at the legendary Slugfest here in south Wales, at which the band would go on to film the chaotic video for their then still to be released single ‘This High’.Things were certainly looking good for Razorbats, when news suddenly broke that singer Even Berg was out the band and was being replaced by Paul Vercouteren (from sleaze rockers Virginia Hill) ahead of the release of the band’s 2018 sophomore album ‘II’. With Berg having been an intrinsic part of the Razorbats unique blend of punk and hard rock, I must admit I didn’t initially warm to that second album, and it took a good number of plays before I finally got beneath its skin. So, if the blurb that accompanies the band’s third long player to date is to believed – then things all kind of got on top of the ‘bats too, as this new record is an album they actually never thought they’d get around to writing, never mind recording. The band almost imploding for a second time in the back of their van amidst the hectic touring schedule that followed the release of ‘II’.Praise be to the rock gods though that they did make it through, as even after just an initial couple of listens ‘Mainline Rock ‘N’ Roll’ is easily one of the best albums I’ve heard so far in 2021. With guitarist and band mainstay Kjetil Wevling along with Vercouteren once again joining up with guitarist Asle Tangen and adding a new powerhouse rhythm section of bassist Martin Korsgaard Hervig and drummer Christian Håpnes Svendsen along the way. Now these guys really do sound like they are ready to take on the world.Kicking off this all new 10 track album we have ‘Rock N Roll Kills’, and the immediate thing that hits me is the step up this record has in the production department from its predecessor. The main riff to ‘Rock N Roll Kills’ really does sound like more of a mission statement than a song title given the immediate shock it is to the system it generates, and I do have to wonder if the production team of Kjetil Wevling (yup he’s a man of many talents) and Torris Ilievski might also happen to be fans of Michael Beinhorn’s stellar work during the multi-platinum selling grunge days, such is the potential for this tune to immediately be syndicated by rock radio stations worldwide. And it doesn’t stop there either folks, as the immense ‘Working For The Weekend’ and the almost Hanoi (with a decent production) greatness of ‘Rebel Soul’ twist and turn into your psyche like a slinky Axl Rose sideways dancing his way through the late 80s.It’s when we get to ‘Little Ms. Crazy’ though that ‘Mainline Rock ‘N’ Roll’ really throws me the first musical curveball (not unlike ‘Camp Rock’ excelled at doing), and this really is when Razorbats stand out from the Scandirock pack. Granted this tune might be a step down in pace following the album’s frantic opening trio, but just for the last 30 seconds alone with its vocal refrain just waiting to get stuck going round and round in your head, this is without doubt a true highlight of this record.For the rest of ‘Mainline Rock ‘N’ Roll’ the pedal is well and truly to the metal with the likes of ‘The City’, ‘White Trash Radio’ and album closer ‘Nightcrawlers’ perhaps being the closest the crue (sic) have ever sauntered into the field of cock rock, whilst the likes of the anthemic ‘Cocaine Karma’ and ‘Big Time’ and the reflective ‘Venice’ simply sound like Razorbats right back at the very top of their game and enjoying every second of it.Look, buying a copy of ‘Mainline Rock ‘N’ Roll’ should be made compulsory for not just every RPM Online reader but also anyone who owns a record by any of the bands/musicians I’ve namechecked here. Trust me, ‘Mainline Rock ‘N’ Roll’ is guaranteed to drive you (Razor)bat shit crazy folks.

Before work began the band parted ways with guitarist Erland Nyborg and they continued as a four-piece for a while. Camp Rock was finally released in September 2015 and received fantastic reviews from all over the world as the reputation of the album spread through the winter of 2015/16. Again national radio in Norway started playing the single titled Kids of the 70s in addition to rock radio in Europe and college radio in the US. To support the album Razorbats went on their first tour of Norway and also added dates in Sweden and the UK.In the spring of 2016 the band again went in the studio with Christoffersen to record a couple of song, this time resulting in an EP titled This High. It was released in the fall of 2016, but the band didn't tour to support it, but instead got ready to record the follow up to Camp Rock. This time things did not go as planned...Right before Christmas 2016, with most of the album done, singer Even Berg said he was leaving the band for personal reasons. The remaining member couldn't agree on what to do next, so bassist Stig Sætevik left around the same time. With half a band and half an album in the can, Razorbats was close to calling it quits. After a few weeks of soul searching drummer Knut S. S. Wettre and guitarist Kjetil F. Wevling decided to give it another go and try to find new band members.Wevling remembered a band called Hollywood Vampires, that were stirring things up a few years ago. They had a fantastic sing and frontman in Paulie Vercouteren, so he tracked him down. As it turned out Paul was a fan of Razorbats, so they met up for a talk and a few beers. Paul brought along bassist Chris Haugerud, who was in a band called Kill City Bandits, that was about to pack it in. The new lineiup quickly started rehearsing and it was just magic! This was gonna work! The guys had decided already that first night that they were gonna ad a second guitar player to the lineup. Auditions were held and Asle Tangen, previously of Babylon Bastards and She Said Destroy, joined in May 2017. During the spring and summer of 2017 the new lineup finished the follow up album to Camp Rock and played their first gigs at Gjerstad Rock Festival and Raumarock in Norway.

They visit the disco for cocaine-fueled night of debauchery in “Atomic”, get tempted by groupies in “Only In America”, get stuck in a bad relationship in “Shotgun Wedding”, and finish with the beautiful ballad “Seventeen”, where the band reflect on why they chose this life to begin with.Fun, enjoyable 40 minutes of tales from a life in rock told through classic hard rock riffs, catchy choruses and a strong production.
