Info:

The Plasmatics were an American punk band formed by Yale University art school graduate Rod Swenson with Wendy O. Williams. The band was a controversial group known for wild live shows that broke countless taboos. In addition to chainsawing guitars, blowing up speaker cabinets and sledgehammering television sets, Williams and the Plasmatics blew up automobiles live on stage. Williams was arrested in Milwaukee by the Milwaukee police before being charged with public indecency. The Plasmatics' career spanned five studio albums, and multiple EPs. The band was composed of vocalist/front person Wendy O. Williams and various other musicians rotated behind her over time. Aside from Wendy and manager Rod Swenson, Guitarist Wes Beech was the only other permanent member of the group. Guitarist Richie Stotts was a co-founder of the band and a mainstay of the pre-breakup core group (1978–1983).After the breakup of the band following the release of Coup d'Etat, Richie was edited out of band videos and not referred to by name in a 2006 compilation DVD released by Plasmatics Media LLC (via plasmatics.com).

Album:

Beyond the Valley of 1984 is the second album by punk-metal band The Plasmatics. After the success of their first album and tour, the band began recording their follow-up album, Beyond the Valley of 1984. After the amount of time and money that was put into their last album, Bruce Kirkland at Stiff Records agreed to put up the funds as long as Rod produced and the album was done in less than 3 weeks at a quarter of the cost of the first.Given the recent turn of events,[clarification needed] Rod proposed the name Beyond the Valley of 1984 and the tour, in 1981, became "The 1984 World Tour". In between touring drummers, Alice Cooper's Neal Smith was brought in to do the drumming for the record, and the album, with its Orwellian and apocalyptic theme and songs such as "Masterplan", "Pig Is a Pig", and "Sex Junkie", was released a few months later. The album was recorded at The Ranch in New York City, a studio owned by John Andrew "Andy" Parks, a singer-songwriter from Texas. A promotional tape exists with Andy doing the voice-over in an over-the-top Texan accent. The Ranch was equipped with a modified MCI JH-416 console, a 3M M-79 24-track and an Ampex ATR-102 1/4-inch two-track. Engineer Eddie Ciletti was brought in during the second phase to overdub guitars, vocals, electric chain saw and mix.Mixing was "unconventional," for a punk record due to rather "strict" parameters established by Rod. The record would not have any wide stereo panning, and it had to be mixed at a level low enough so that he could conduct business over the phone. The mix was done almost entirely on Auratone monitors.During recording for the album, The Plasmatics were booked on the Tom Snyder late night TV show, where Tom Snyder introduced them as "possibly the greatest punk rock band in the entire world".The album was re-released in 2000 by Plasmatics Media, Inc.A second album was long overdue but due to the ongoing legal battles and the Miller debacle with the first album, which was costly both in terms of time and money, it was agreed that this one had to be lean and mean. Bruce Kirkland at Stiff agreed to put up the funds as long as Rod produced and the album was done in less than 3 weeks at a quarter of the cost of the first.Given the recent turn of events, Rod proposed the name Beyond the Valley of 1984 and the tour, in 1981, became "The 1984 World Tour". In between touring drummers, Alice Cooper's Neal Smith was brought in to do the drumming for the record, and the album, with its Orwellian and apocalyptic theme and songs such as "Masterplan", "Pig is a Pig", and "Sex Junkie", was released a few months later. During recording for the album, The Plasmatics were booked on the Tom Snyder late night TV show, where Tom Snyder introduced them as possibly "the greatest punk rock band in the entire world." Recording engineer Eddie Ciletti mixed the record at the Ranch recording studio in New York as well as the TV sound for the Tom Snyder performance. The album cover for Beyond the Valley was photographed in the Arizona desert where Wendy appears on horseback with the band (without a drummer) as the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse".The 1984 World Tour continued with the bold slogan "Down On Your Knees and Pledge Allegiance!".

Metal Priestess EP:

Metal Priestess is the 1981 EP by punk-metal band The Plasmatics, fronted by Wendy O. Williams.Dan Hartman, who produced acts such as 38 Special and James Brown, among others, had been working on a session in LA when he picked up a copy of Beyond the Valley of 1984 and couldn't stop playing it. It was "ground breaking," he said. "I knew I wanted to meet these people and do something with them." Dan came down to the Tribeca loft where he met Wendy O. Williams and Rod Swenson and a month later he and Rod Swenson were working on the production of the Metal Priestess EP.The creation of the EP is a result of the need to release something due to their increasing popularity, with an album being premature, partly because Capitol Records was now making overtures for the next one. Metal Priestess was recorded at Dan's private studio off his schoolhouse turned home and studio in Connecticut and released early in the fall of 1981.The EP received an alternative cover the same year through the Passport (PVC/Jem) record label. In 2002, the EP was re-released through Plasmatics Media, LTD on the New Hope for the Wretched re-release.During the last part of the tour Rod had been contacted by American singer, songwriter and record producer Dan Hartman's office asking that Dan have a meeting with Wendy and Rod. Hartman, who produced acts .38 Special, James Brown, and others, had been working on a session in LA when he picked up a copy of Beyond the Valley of 1984 and could not stop playing it. He felt it was "ground breaking". He said, "I knew I wanted to meet these people and do something with them." Dan came down to the Tribeca loft, met Wendy and Rod, and a month later he and Rod were working on the production of the Metal Priestess mini-LP. The band needed more product but another album was premature, partly because Capitol Records was now making overtures for the next one. Bruce at Stiff was ready to release it and that summer Metal Priestess was recorded at Dan's private studio off his schoolhouse turned home and studio in Connecticut and released early that fall. Metal Priestess saw the band move closer to heavy metal, and also included new members Chris "Junior" Romanelli (replacing Jean Beauvoir) and Joey Reese. The band made an appearance on SCTVs "Fishin' Musician" shortly after releasing Metal Priestess.

Album:

Remastered reissue by Rock Candy Records of PLASMATICS album "Coup d'Etat" .Here in exclusive, a rocking album really benefited by, this sonic lifting, and including four bonus tracks.Led by uber rock queen Wendy O. Williams, a woman who pushed female empowerment to its ultimate conclusion, this New York outfit took a real and rare delight in blowing up cars, hacking apart guitars and generally leaving a trail of spare parts in their wake. They came from the era of punk. They literally turned the New York rock music scene on its head back in 1978. Wendy Orleans Williams was the driving force of the band, a focal point who made female peers like Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and Ann Wilson look pussy-cat tame by comparison. The Plasmatics blazed their own path through the turn of the Seventies. At one point, they were a headline act without actually being signed to a label.Venues all over New York City were fair game, the band introducing audiences to exploding cars, chainsaw threatened guitars, destroyed TV sets and speaker cabinets, and of course 'the Mohawk', which is where it all started for that hairstyle. Thank you Jean Beauvoir...Yeah, in the early days, Beauvoir was the bassist in the band, but he had departed by the time they landed this third studio full-length album - for the first time on a major label, Capitol Records - in 1982, titled 'Coup D'Etat'.Produced by Dieter Dierks (Scorpions) and engineered by Michael Wagener (you know the guy), this has got 'big ticket' written all over it. Certainly this is less punk and a more hard rock / metal album.Wendy's voice is as tough as nails; apparently she nearly lost her voice because of the strain she put on it in the studio.Things kick off with the immense 'Put Your Love In Me', sexual innuendo at its extreme with a solid rhythm section and huge, gruff vocals. Keeping up the assault, 'Stop' is hardly that; instead, it's an anthem for the disaffected youth of the day.'Rock N Roll' has a touch of Mutt Lange-produced AC/DC, and they put the 'boof' into the Motorhead standard 'No Class', which absolutely locks this album into metal territory. 'Mistress Of Taboo' has a punkish sort of energy, the bullet-like drum-work a stand-out.'Path Of Glory' has a rolling thunder approach to its delivery. A couple of tracks put an anchor on the metronome, such as the unusual 'Lightning Breaks', plus the pairing of 'Country Fairs' and 'Just Like On TV'.The bonus tracks include a song that didn't make it into the album, plus demos showcasing how much some songs evolved later."Coup d'Etat" is the most impressive, most inflammable album in Plasmatics' career, an aggressive but at the same time very polished record (thanks Dierks) plenty of punchy songs full of attitude. This is a good listen years later. I never really got into this back in 1982, but I'm making up for lost time with this excellent Rock Candy remastering, something this LP needed now sounding fuller.
