Bio:

Evergrey is a progressive metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was founded in 1995 and released its debut album, The Dark Discovery, in 1998. After a minor hiatus the band returns with its ninth album Hymns For The Broken on 26/30 September 2014. On April 4, 2006, Evergrey released their sixth studio album, Monday Morning Apocalypse. The album was produced and mixed by Sanken Sandquist and Stefan Glauman, former producers of Rammstein, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, among others.[citation needed] Tom S. Englund said, regarding the collaboration: "We feel honoured to work with such amazing producers. We are sure that they will succeed in making us sound better than ever before."[citation needed] The album debuted at No. 6 in Sweden.During summer 2006, Evergrey played at many festivals throughout Europe: among others, Sweden Rock Festival, Download Festival, Arvika Festival, Masters of Rock, Storsjöyran and Sziget Festival. From May 5 to May 30, the band toured the United States with In Flames, Nevermore and Throwdown. On September 15 they headlined Prog Power VII in Atlanta, Georgia. On October 24, 2006, Evergrey started a new European tour. They were supported by fellow Swedish death metal band Avatar, and they visited Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden.Evergrey released their seventh studio album, Torn, in September 2008, continuing with their trademark lyrical themes of desperation and despair. Jari Kainulainen permanently filled the role on August 6, 2007, who also played bass on Torn.On May 8, 2008, Evergrey announced that they had signed a deal with Steamhammer/SPV. This included the release of their new album and the entire back catalogue. It also was announced that the new album, Torn, would be released early in September 2008.As the deal includes the band's entire back catalog, there is the possibility of re-releases of previous Evergrey albums with the inclusion of added bonus material. In July 2008, Swedish/Danish band Amaranthe announced that keyboardist Rikard Zander, along with In Flames bassist Peter Iwers, would make a guest appearance on their upcoming album. In May 2010, it was announced that Jonas Ekdahl, Henrik Danhage and Jari Kainulainen have all left Evergrey by mutual decision because of problems with the band members interacting with each other. They called it quits as to not ruin the friendship they all have with each other. An article posted November 13, 2010 on Evergrey's blog contained dates for upcoming concerts as well as the confirmation of a new album titled Glorious Collision on February 28, 2011.Via Facebook posts in November 2013, while writing the next Evergrey album due for release in 2014, the band first confirmed that drummer Hannes Van Dahl would be leaving the band to join Sabaton full-time, and then due to "problems working together" guitarist Marcus Jidell would also be leaving. In August 2014 the release of the music video for King of Errors from the forthcoming Hymns For The Broken revealed that Henrik Danhage and Jonas Ekdahl had returned to the band.

Album:

After more than 30 years of existence, Gothenburg's finest metal masters Evergrey are far away from slowing things down. The five-piece, led by founder, singer and guitarist Tom S. Englund, will release its fourteenth studio album, "Theories Of Emptiness" via Napalm Records. Without any doubt, the new album marks one of the most dynamic records the band has ever crafted throughout their impressive career. "Theories Of Emptiness" was produced by Tom S. Englund and Jonas Ekdahl, and was mixed by Adam 'Nolly' Getgood (ex-Periphery), who worked closely with the band from the start - bringing out the vividness of the album's overall sonic profile. Rounding out the album's production, mastering was helmed by Thomas 'Plec' Johansson (Soilwork, The Night Flight Orchestra, Onslaught, The Gems, Eleine and many more).Since releasing their first album, "The Dark Discovery", in 1998, Evergrey have gifted their devotees 13 studio records depicting dark, emotional imagery supported by progressive and heavy melodic metal elements. "Theories Of Emptiness" follows its chart-topping and critically acclaimed predecessor, 2022's "A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament)", which entered charts worldwide at #3 in Sweden (metal), ranked #5 on the Top New Artist Albums charts in the United States, entered #7 in Finland and #12 in Germany."For us, progression is paramount," states Tom S. Englund when discussing the eleven track opus, "Theories Of Emptiness". "We're dedicated to ensuring that our music remains innovative and avoids stagnation. With each album, we strive to introduce something new - a unique flavor, a different key or chord, fresh voices in our writing, or innovative production techniques." In fact, no stone has been left unturned. Tracks are created to balance each-other mutually: from the aggressive tones of "Misfortune" contrasting the light-hearted opening of "To Become Someone Else", to the ballad "Ghost Of My Hero" leading into the furious riffs of "We Are The North". Album opener "Falling From The Sun" (sequel to "A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament)" track "Ominous") and "Say" interweave heaviness with mesmerizing keyboards and unpredictable instrumental parts, as also heard on "The Night Within". On "Cold Dreams", Englund’s distinctive voice is accompanied by Jonas Renkse of fellow Swedish metal icons Katatonia, splicing the song with a stellar performance that underlines another intense facet of the album. In addition, Englund’s daughter Salina provides lush backing vocals that enhance the song's dynamics even more. Ending on a quiet note, "Theories Of Emptiness" depicts exactly what emptiness is about, first with the immersive "Our Way Through Silence", and then with "A Theory Of Emptiness" which, with timid piano, makes us rationalize our innermost feelings. Navigating realms of darkness and light, "Theories Of Emptiness" takes listeners on a carefully balanced roller coaster ride - showcasing Evergrey's ever-evolving sound in 2024 and beyond.
