Bio:

The Agonist is a Canadian metal band from Montreal, Quebec formed in 2004 and has a current line up of Guitarists Danny Marino and Pascal (Paco) Jobin, Bassist Chris Kells, Drummer Simon Mckay and Vocalist Vicky Psarakis who joined in March 2014 following the departure of former vocalist and founding member Alissa White-Gluz,both Psarakis and White-Gluz use growled and clean vocals for the band. Originally known as The Tempest, the band adopted their current moniker upon their signing to Century Media in 2007. To date, The Agonist has released three studio albums; the third, Prisoners, was released June 4, 2012. Touring extensively since their first album, they have shared the stage with bands such as Arsonists Get All the Girls,Epica, The Faceless, Chelsea Grin, Kamelot, Visions of Atlantis and many more. The Agonist was formed in 2004 with the line-up of Vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, Guitarist Danny Marino and Bassist Chris Kells. The band released their first album Once Only Imagined on August 14, 2007. Originally intended as a demo, the release of Once Only Imagined prompted The Agonist to add metal drummer Simon McKay to the band. Released August 28, 2007, the video for "Business Suits and Combat Boots" was filmed by acclaimed director David Brodsky (Strapping Young Lad, Gwar, God Forbid). The video was voted the number 6 video of the year 2007 on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. After releasing their first album, The Agonist toured with the likes of God Forbid, Arsis, The Faceless, Sonata Arctica, Overkill, Epica, Visions of Atlantis, and Enslaved. One of the band's tours was disrupted when their equipment trailer was damaged in a blizzard in the Rocky Mountains.White-Gluz was named one of "the hottest chicks in metal" in the July 2007 issue of Revolver. In March 2014, White-Gluz announced that she had been chosen as the replacement for Angela Gossow as frontwoman of the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy. She also revealed that the group as fans knew it was "over" and that she and they had parted ways. Vicky Psarakis was then revealed as the new lead singer of the group. On July 9th 2014, the band had officially announced via Facebook that their fourth album, "Eye of Providence", will be released on February 23rd.

Album:

Simplifying a style is typically seen to be a detrimental process. The Agonist would prove otherwise with Eye Of Providence, their first effort without Alissa White-Gluz, who moves on to Arch Enemy fame and fortune. As good fortune favours The Agonist, they aren't at a loss but a difference with a new vocalist in Vicky Psarakis, who finds her own zone and fronts the band's most direct and focused record to date. All the pseudo-progressions of Prisoners are dropped in favour of a sound comparably static in style, but more instrumentally energised in its melodic death metal punches. Metalcore continues to grant an edge of distinction, though the song writing is noticeably less exploratory in comparison to prior efforts, as the direction of Eye Of Providence lies in melodic consistency over originality. One won't find the fascinations of Lullabies For The Dormant Mind, which remains their most well conceived and original record. Yet this is not to deny the strength of a rhythm section very much in the here-and-now of melodic death metal, and one in constant activity and motion; there's no stopping or resisting it, frankly, and performance values are at an all-time tightness for The Agonist. For what's static in style, the musicianship involved is electrically charged and crucial to the band's most readily engaging effort yet.Considering a cut like "Perpetual Notion" as representative of the album overall would be appropriate, as its focus on melodic recurrent riff and ongoing rhythmic energy carries the new-found vocal range in Vicky's growls to cleans. Listeners will notice her preference for clean arrangements, which understandably possess a greater diversity in delivery than her harsher side, which she ultimately capitalises upon as much as is possible. This will strike a contrast in the experience from the presence that Alissa previously filled as the band's voice, her growls obviously being the primary draw. Arch Enemy acquired her talents for a reason, after all.Psarakis' range is well demonstrated right from the opener in "Gates Of Horn And Ivory," which alternates between harsh and clean with ease and obvious control, establishing the contrast which remains just as consistent as the instrumentation throughout. It's in the album's closing numbers where particular points of difference are made in song structure, as in the softer acoustic led piece "A Gentle Disease" and the final "As Above, So Below," which runs rather differently in its eight minute duration and is the most ambitious of the album's thirteen tracks, ending Eye Of Providence on a differentiated note. The streamlined nature of the record is made all the more apparent with a finer and thoroughly modern production this time around, with a clear guitar sound within the mix steering the very direct approach of the rhythm section, which manages to acclimatise Psarakis' vocal arrangements without overcompensation or overpowering. For the most part, The Agonist's efforts without Alissa White-Gluz certainly aren't without merit despite the straightforward and less innovative approach taken with this record. Consistency is upheld and Eye Of Providence sees its greatest strength in its focus accompanying the new voice of Vicky Psarakis.

Album:

The Agonist's contemporary take on melodic death metal flirting with metalcore elements has received lots of criticism since former singer Alissa White-Gluz has left the band and joined genre veterans Arch Enemy. The band certainly hasn't deserved so much negativity since the band has found an excellent new singer, developed its own style and continued to do its thing. The thing that keeps the band away from becoming more popular might be the lack of truly impressive songs with memorable choruses and the overall messy songwriting. Most songs include numerous interesting elements. Let's take opener ''In Vertigo'' for instance. Atmospheric backing choirs meet guttural harsh vocals and melancholic clean vocals, fast guitar solos meet chugging breakdowns and droning bridges, double bass sections meet more percussive elements and there is even a short bass guitar solo in here. The song is brilliant and offers something new to discover even after multiple spins. However, most people will just feel confused by the at times fast, messy and radical changes and transitions. The Agonist's songwriting is certainly an acquired taste. The band sounds more accessible when it slows down a little bit and focuses on its atmospheric side. ''Mr. Cold'' might be the best example in that regard as the wonderful guitar melodies unfold best in this song and prove how skilled the musicians actually are. The clean lead vocals sound balanced, passionate and vibrant here. The drum play is employed with care and changes pace to vary intensity throughout the tune. The only thing that keeps this song away from being a single candidate is the somewhat stressful chorus that doesn't quite fit with the rest and needs some time to grow. The highlight on this album might be title track ''Orphans'' which convinces yet again with atmospheric choirs and powerful clean lead vocals. The song is overall on the softer side without lacking progressive drum patterns and a few growls and screams. Those are however employed with care and don't bury or interrupt the overall melancholic atmosphere of this song. If you want to listen to one single song to hear whether you might like this new record or not, this one here would be the best choice. If The Agonist slowed things down a little bit in order to write more atmospheric, balanced and structured songs, they could finally exploit their full potential that is often overheard. Orphans shows plenty of promise but many tracks include too many transitions, ideas and changes for their own good. The album needs a few spins to get listeners used to the band's unusual style. However, this record certainly is a grower. Fans of progressive metal bands like UneXpect might actually adore this band already while those who listen to bands like Arch Enemy might find this band too artsy. It's an acquired taste and a raw diamond but this album is worth giving it some time and polishing said mineral.

Album:

Combining extreme metal elements with great melodies and interesting rhythms is not an easy feat, you either go too heavy or too melodic. Yet somehow Canadian metal band THE AGONIST have managed to create songs that have a neat balance between heaviness and melodious. This is even more impressive as they incorporate metalcore, progressive metal, and technical aspects in their music. They have more than proven their craft and musicianship with their sixth full-length outing, “Orphans” (2019), but also with the wonderful follow-up, “Days Before the World Wept.” The EP was released on October 15th, 2021, via powerhouse label Napalm Records.Just like “Orphans,” the new EP is multifaceted and diverse, as the five tracks present different takes on melodic death metal by mixing together grim moods and atmospheres with blistering guitars from duo Danny Marino and Pascal Jobin, pummeling drums from Simon McKay, groovy bass lines from Chris Kells, and Vicky Psarakis’ impressive vocals. Lead single and death metal burner, “Remnants in Time,” gets things going with a haunting piano melody before the guitars, drums, and vocals take over and twist it into a full-blown technical delight. The choral-like vocalizations soften the frenetic guitar attack while also giving everything an eerie vibe. It is, however, the low gutturals in the chorus that give weight to the song and make it feel more robust and hefty. Up next, “Immaculate Deception” is a more rhythmic and less chaotic piece than “Remnants in Time,” as it hinges on clean vocals and mechanical double-bass drum beats. Seriously, the drum work in this track is insane, whereas the guitars rumble steadily in the background and the vocals take control of the direction of the music. The punchy reworked version of “Resurrection” (originally from “Five”) features some gritty clean vocals from Vicky Psarakis and intense drumming from Simon McKay. The guitar riffs inject the song with some interesting harmonies, veering it into blackened death metal territory. Second single “Feast on the Living” pummels forward with furious drums, fierce vocals, and razor-sharp guitars that just won’t let up. The title track, “Days Before the World Wept,” leans a bit more into progressive metal, as blast-beats and double-bass drumming kick everything into gear while the chugging guitars tie everything together nicely. The emotional vocals add a new dimension of warmth, not just to this track, but to the whole EP, bringing this tale of greed, pain, and redemption to life and pinpointing Vicky Psarakis as one of (if not) the best vocalists in the extreme metal scene.All-in-all, this EP really showcases that THE AGONIST are not just in top form, but establishes them as one of the most technically proficient bands out there. “Days Before the World Wept’ is a well-crafted and put-together EP that is wonderfully cohesive in terms of how the instrumental side supports the lyrics and how the vocals weave themselves into this tapestry of sounds and connect everything. In between “Orphans” and this EP, THE AGONIST have really cemented their status as a creative force on the metal scene and I am sure we will get more impressive albums from them going forward.
