Bio:

Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. The group was considered one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene during the 1980s. When the genre's popularity increased, Anthrax was one of its "big four" with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. As of 2014 the band has released ten studio albums, a number of singles and an EP with American hip hop group Public Enemy. According to Nielsen SoundScan Anthrax sold 2.5 million records in the United States from 1991 to 2004, with worldwide sales of over 15 million.Noted for its live performances, Anthrax signed with the independent label Megaforce Records (which released the band's debut studio album in 1984). Lilker soon left the band to form Nuclear Assault, and was replaced by roadie Frank Bello. Vocalist Neil Turbin left shortly after and was replaced by Joey Belladonna. With a new lineup, the band recorded Spreading the Disease (distributed by Island Records) in 1985. Anthrax's third album, Among the Living, was released in 1987 to critical praise. The band experienced another lineup change in 1992, when John Bush replaced Belladonna as lead vocalist. Sound of White Noise was released the following year, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200. Studio recordings during the 1990s saw the band, influenced by other genres, experimenting with its sound.Anthrax's lineup has changed several times. Paul Kahn and Greg Walls were early replacements for drummer Dave Weiss and bassist Kenny Kushner; the band has had a number of vocalists, including Neil Turbin, Joey Belladonna and John Bush. Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, who joined Anthrax in 1983, are the only band members to appear on every album; bassist Frank Bello has played on every album except the band's first. Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Fistful of Metal is the debut album by American thrash metal band Anthrax, released in January 1984 by Megaforce Records in the US and Music for Nations internationally. It includes a cover of Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen". This is the band's only album to feature Neil Turbin on vocals and Dan Lilker on bass.Danny Lilker and Scott Ian had been the original founders of the band, but singer Neil Turbin fired Lilker shortly after the release of the album, and without Scott Ian's permission. As his replacement, the band hired drummer Charlie Benante's nephew, Frank Bello, who has played on every Anthrax album since. Vocalist Neil Turbin had contributed song ideas, lyrics, titles and arrangements to the majority of songs on the debut album, i.e. "Metal Thrashing Mad", "Deathrider", "Panic", "Subjugator, "Death from Above", "Soldiers of Metal", "Anthrax", as well as Spreading the Disease songs "Armed and Dangerous", "Gung Ho" and "Raise Hell", but both Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, who played guitar in addition to drums, felt they needed tighter control on the songwriting.Due to a songwriting partnership between Ian and Benante, with Ian writing all the lyrics and Benante writing the music, Turbin was released from the band.Eddie Trunk admits in his book Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal: "Early on, I told Johnny Z that what I didn't like about Anthrax was singer Neil Turbin's vocals."He admits in his writing to pressuring Johnny Zazula and Anthrax into firing Turbin from the band. The term "thrash metal" was used for the first time in the music press by UK's Kerrang! journalist Malcolm Dome, while making a reference to the song "Metal Thrashing Mad".Fistful of Metal was released as a double album by Music for Nations in the UK, featuring extra mixes of the tracks "Soldiers of Metal" and "Howling Furies", which were not included on the US edition. In 2000, Megaforce repackaged and re-release a compilation of Fistful of Metal and the 1985 Anthrax EP Armed and Dangerous which featured some liner notes, but excluded any new mixes and bonus tracks and features a different artwork instead of the controversial "Metal-wrapped fist" artwork.

Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Worship Music is the tenth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax. The album was released on September 12, 2011 internationally, and on September 13 in the United States. It was the band's first album of original material since We've Come for You All (2003), the first full-length Anthrax album since 1990's Persistence of Time to feature vocalist Joey Belladonna, and the final album with guitarist Rob Caggiano prior to his departure in January 2013.Anthrax return after a long, tumultuous absence from the record bins with their new album ‘Worship Music,’ a stunningly cohesive re-assertion of their strength and precision. It’s been eight years since Anthrax’s last album, 2003’s ‘We’ve Come for You All,’ their fourth and final album with John Bush on vocals.Since then, the band reunited with golden-era lead singer Joey Belladonna for some touring. They then parted ways again, and recruited Dan Nelson to sing on an early version of ‘Worship Music.’Just when it looked like the record would finally come out, in 2009, Nelson was out, too, to be replaced on tour briefly by Bush and then finally on record by Belladonna. Got all that?OK, well, throw it all out, it’s ancient history now.Cause all that really matters is that this record absolutely smokes. The 20 years since Belladonna’s last record with Anthrax, 1990’s ‘Persistence of Time,’ doesn’t seem to have affected their natural chemistry one bit.Unlike the last two (and very very good) Bush-era records, which leaned slightly in a hard rock direction, ‘Worship Music’ finds Anthrax very solidly in thrash mode. The opening trio of ‘Earth on Hell,’ the absolutely undeniable ‘The Devil You Know’ (reviewed here) and ‘Fight ‘Em Till You Can’t’ are gonna cause a lot of hearing damage as the faithful give in to the urge to play them often and at ever increasing volume. But what really makes this album special is the two epics that follow – ‘I’m Alive’ and ‘In the End,’ which both demonstrate a very special, non-boring type of maturity and musical growth. It’s not that they’re ballads, by any means, but by taking the pedal off the gas just a little bit, and perhaps bringing the vocals forward in the mix a touch, Anthrax has hit on a powerful, ‘Sad but True’-type of groove that really shows off their songwriting skills. All that … and you’re just halfway through the album. There’s very little in the way of filler the rest of the way out, with the call and response of ‘The Giant’ and the B-movie monster stomp of ‘The Constant’ serving as our personal highlights.Really, Anthrax couldn’t have named this album any better. These songs are going to fit perfectly next to the band’s classics on their upcoming tour. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next one!

Anthems is the sixth EP by American thrash metal band Anthrax. It was released on March 19, 2013 through Megaforce Records in North America, and three days later in Europe by Nuclear Blast. This was the group's last release to feature lead guitarist Rob Caggiano, who left the band subsequently. The record features cover songs from some of the band's favorite acts of the 1970s, along with two versions of "Crawl", a song from their previous studio album. The EP was recorded during 2012 at various locations. Although it was initially scheduled to be released as part of a special edition of Worship Music, the record was released both separately and on a deluxe edition. It received favorable reviews by music critics and debuted at number 52 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 8,500 copies in its first week of release. By April 10, 2013, Anthems had sold 14,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Sound of White Noise is the sixth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax, released in May 1993 on Elektra Records. It is the band's first album to feature vocalist John Bush, who replaced longtime Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna in 1992. It is also Anthrax's last studio album with longtime lead guitarist Dan Spitz. This was also the second album Bush worked with producer Dave Jerden, as he also produced Symbol of Salvation for Bush's previous band, Armored Saint. The album, produced by the band and Dave Jerden, includes the singles "Only", "Room for One More", "Hy Pro Glo" and "Black Lodge". This album marked a significant revision in the band's sound, with the departure of lead vocalist Joey Belladonna and the introduction of grunge influences. Jerden was known for producing the likes of Alice in Chains and Jane's Addiction. With Sound of White Noise, Anthrax moved away from the rapid-fire thrash metal that had defined their earlier output, often emphasizing more melodic songwriting and abandoning the goofy humor. Songs like the walloping "Only" and stuttering, stop-start dynamics of "Hy Pro Glo" maintained a level of aggression on par with anything else the band recorded, but in a different alternative metal style. Other songs found Anthrax exploring new territory, like the mid-tempo "Room for One More," and the atmospheric "Black Lodge" (inspired by the Twin Peaks TV series and featuring keyboardist Angelo Badalamenti). Bush's lower-pitched, darker vocal style also was a drastic change from Belladona's tendency towards operatic falsetto. The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 charts,Anthrax's highest ever chart position. Sound of White Noise was certified gold by the RIAA."Only" and "Black Lodge" charted at No. 26 and No. 38 respectively on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.Dave Connolly reviewed the album on behalf of AllMusic and called it "surprisingly melodic" but "predictably pummeling" and the music "relentless." He commends the overall quality of the songs on the album before settling on "Only" as the best overall, but calls out several other tracks for praise as well.Canadian journalist Martin Popoff praised the performance of new singer John Bush and the production by Dave Jerden and defined the album's music "top-flight, state-of-the-art metal, fortified by the band's usual societal concerns, here elevated to eloquent outrage at man's crumbling morality."[6] Spin critic John Wiederhorn described the album as "a good typical heavy-metal record." Nevertheless, he also noted that the album "doesn't wander beyond the sound of its dark, moody intros and tuneful, galloping rhythms."Tom Sinclair of Rolling Stone described the album as "a powerful comeback from a group that never went away."Among the album's songs, "Only" has received particular attention; Metallica frontman James Hetfield is said to have referred to "Only" as a "perfect song."

Album:

Volume 8: The Threat Is Real is the eighth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax. The album was released on July 28, 1998 by Ignition Records and debuted at number 118 on the Billboard 200 chart. The record was produced by the band and Paul Crook. It features the song "Crush", which appeared in the video game ATV Offroad Fury for PlayStation 2 and in the game's soundtrack. Other released singles from the album were "Inside Out", "Piss N Vinegar" and "Born Again Idiot"."Pieces", the hidden track at the end of the album, was written by bassist Frank Bello as a tribute to his brother Anthony who was murdered outside his girlfriend's home in The Bronx on March 25th, 1996 by an assailant who has never been identified. The track features Bello on vocals.Stephen Thomas Erlewine, in a mixed review for AllMusic, wrote that the album is a continuation of the band's "writing slump" which started with 1993's Sound of White Noise. He said that there aren't many "memorable songs" on the record, and went to call it "transitional album" leading the band to "new, uncharted territory".Stephen Thompson of The A.V. Club found the album to be "aggressive to the point of being exhausting".Martin Popoff in his Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal remarks how the band put a bit of everything in the songs, including multiple speeds, "humor scattered here and there", "big grungy guitars", "meat and potatoes riffing and roaring vocals from Bush", while "experimenting with some different textures and dynamics". The result is not just "an accessible thrash metal record", as is typical with Anthrax. All lyrics written by John Bush and Scott Ian; all music by Charlie Benante, except where noted.
