IBio:

Kuni is a heavy metal/hard rock band and solo project of guitarist Kuni Takeuchi who began activities in 1986.The only permanent member of the band, guitarist Kuni has released four full-length albums as of 2010, featuring numerous international guests on each album including Ryo Okumoto, Kevin Dubrow, Jeff Scott Soto, Frankie Banali, Billy Sheehan and Neil Turbin among many others. Regarded as a legend among Japanese metal guitarists, Kuni has recently had the opportunity to play many large festivals including Loud Park multiple times. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of his career, he played at Loud Park again in 2016 and flew in numerous guests including Jeff Scott Soto who sang on the entirety of Kuni's second album Lookin' for Action to perform at the festival with him.

Album:

This is a stunning album which bests most 80’s stuff I’ve heard from Japan, including Loudness, and sits right up there with X Japan, possibly even higher. Kuni is basically somewhat akin to Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert or Jason Becker, perhaps even Michael Angelo Batio; a talented virtuoso who here teams up with guest stars only, crafting an album of excellent tracks with good variety, that flow well together. What really makes the virtuosic Kuni standout above most of his contemporaries though, is his real skill in writing complete songs, and guitar rhythms and harmonies. His concentration isn’t overly on technical shred and drawn out, dramatic solos (which let’s admit – can get a wee bit boring), on this album Kuni writes songs, not following the trodden guitar craftsperson’s path of shred solo, after shred solo – a refreshing change. The sound of the material is not really comparable to any one artist, basically it’s bombastic, romantic heavy metal, with bits and pieces analogous to Dokken, Racer X, M.A.R.S., Kick Axe - even Riot. For the most part it’s strong, featuring awesome vocals by Kal Swan and Kevin Dubrow, and great solos that aren’t overdone. We have a couple of the more straightforward ‘rock anthem’ type track in both the opener ‘We Rock’ and ‘Hands Up’ – both enjoyable, and energetic, though not making it to the top spots for me. ‘Hands Up’ features some Gerge Lynch-esque riffery and solos as well as some great bass by Billy Sheehan. The romantic pounder ‘Restless Heart’ sounds halfway between Tytan and Dokken, and believe me, Kuni’s take on this type of song is among the better ones. The familiar and overdone lyrical path seems insignificant when presented with excellent guitar harmonies and massive riffs. The big chorus with huge backup vocals is catchy and memorable. The deeper tracks are my favorites. ‘Telepathy’ – a nice piece of guitar wizardry (yet not to the point of being overdone) is a unique number that makes liberal use of keyboards and synth to create a spectacular, cinematic and engaging feel. The guitars in this one are worked out well, with Kuni not overly focused on “shredding it up” and more about creating energy and atmosphere, while the heavy keys make the sound somewhat agnate to German melodic heavy metal band Zar. While Kuni is great at the methodical tracks which include vocals (perhaps even better than some of the other virtuosos), he does tend to shine a bit on the instrumentals such as the arresting ‘One last Chance’ and ‘Telepathy’. The former benefits from its pace and employment of speedy bass drums, as well as some typically furious guitar work. Thrilling production is evidenced in both tracks, really one of the nicest sounding albums I’ve heard in a while. What you get on this album is massive, hooky, melodic metal. Kuni is an accomplished guitarist, but we get more than just shred solos here. We get good romantic tracks, keyboard infused instrumental pieces and well worked out vocals. The guest stars were a great touch, as we get some great work from the drummers Banali and Edwards, as do we the vocalists (which include Neil Turbin). Production on this one is absolutely top-notch, and I’m frequently impressed by the crispness of drums, clarity of keyboards and bass, as well as the confident use of stereo techniques. As we should expect, killer riffs and solos abound – but Kuni doesn’t descend into mere guitar wank. He doesn’t pigeonhole himself, instead coming up with catchy riffs and great driving love songs. ‘Love Taker’ a half Coney Hatch, half Racer X sorta number is a high point, with great keys and drums. This one is thoroughly recommendable for those into melodic heavy metal (Dokken fans will enjoy). Pretty flawless all-round and kinda blew me outta the water when I first got it. Easily beats the lame Bow Wow, perhaps even EZO, and other Japanese heavy metal bands. Really surprised how unknown this artist is. Check it out.

Album:

As I’ve said before in my review of Kuni’s previous offering ‘Masque’ – this is impressive shit. Kuni was a Japanese guitar virtuoso, and like one time KISS guitarist Vinny Vincent was able to transform his skills into an awesome melodic, commercially tinged heavy metal outfit, like said guitarist done with Vinny Vincent Invasion. Kuni himself didn’t take the centre stage, masturbatory egomaniacal approach to his music like certain other virtuoso’s done, instead he writes material, which though featuring brilliant guitars, and dazzling displays of talent, doesn’t revolve simply around guitar-wank, but genuinely songs written and performed holistically. Kuni’s music also features an array of heavy metal and hard rock superstars, this time round Jeff Scott Soto, who was fresh from tremendous performances on Malmsteen’s first two solo albums. Superstar drummer Mike Terrana (who has drummed for acts as famous and diverse as Masterplan, Axel Rudi Pell, Not Fragile, Rage & of course Yngwie Malmsteen) steps in for the album too.Overall this a very strong offering from Kuni, serving as a successful follow up to his hard to follow debut album, which is a longtime favourite of mine; more excellent melodic heavy metal anthemism, laden in brilliant hooks, strong instrumental performances, and genuinely well written music. Commercially tinged, with a heavy reliance on big hooks, and polished, massive production jobs, Kuni’s sound here is much the same as in it’s predecessor, with a sound somewhat akin to Dokken. The title track is a fairly fat paced aggressive, though commercial sounding track that revolves around the awesomely powerful hook chorus “Lookin for Action!!! (Action)!!!” which is heavily repeated, and used heavy production touches. The production job, done by none other than Dana Strum from successful glam rock outfit Slaughter, actually manages to stay heavy, and of course, keep guitars well at the forefront, while having that overall commercially polished sound, cashing in on extra effects, and keeping the drums heavily reverbed and guitars incredibly crisp.Production aside, this album features many great songs, and phenomenal guitar performances by the man himself. ‘Say Goodbye’ is another huge anthem, with massive hooks. It sounds very commercial, with an excellent, emotional delivery by Jeff Scott Soto with a tone of voice that here remind me of Grim Reaper’s Steve Grimmett or Don Dokken himself. Kuni’s guitar riffs in this Dokkenesque love song are absolutely fantastic, and his passionate solos and licks are phenomenal. The song is production heavy again, using sonic effects on the huge backup choir, while bass guitar is very crisp and prominent. Kuni’s guitars are very metal, and he feature’s great scaley riffs in this song, and even in the light-hearted commercial track ‘All Night Long’ which features brutal and technical displays of guitar prowess.Brilliant melodic heavy metal with a sound similar somewhat to Dokken or to a lesser extent Crystal Roxx. A very metal guitarist here displays endless talent of technical, and very much heavy metal style play, that manages to couple brilliantly, with a slightly more commercial, and very melodic style of music. In this sense Kuni is very much like George Lynch as a player. Both are able to execute this task incredibly well; dazzling metalheads and providing tones of heaviness and technicality, while writing and performing music with other superstars that is essentially very melodic and somewhat commercial, to a degree. This album has plenty going for it, and this artist is criminally overlooked and forgotten. Tracks like ‘Reckless’ pound along in speed metal fashion and feature shredding leadwork, though maintaining a crisp, clear production job and sounding almost commercial; it’s brilliant. My favourite Japanese heavy metal outfit, right here. Do yourself a favour and pick it up.

Album:

With this being Kuni Takeuchi's most recent Solo effort to date (2014), it could've been a slightly above-average offering had the production not have been so atrocious and varying throughout. The rendition of "Rock N' Roll All Night" by KISS was also an embarrassment & sounded like a bunch of credible musicians goofing off with a classic song. With at least 16 guest musicians here, the result undoubtedly should've been far superior in all aspects. With that being said, there were some decent tracks mixed with some duds (especially the ones with Japanese lead vocalists), & sounded the way it was likely "cut & pasted" together throughout the recording process. Fans of commercial-edged LOUDNESS, KING KOBRA, KEEL, & ROUGH CUTT would likely appreciate what's on display here but not his best effort.
