Info:

With a pair of double-platinum albums and three Top Ten singles, Warrant were one of the most popular pop-metal bands of the late '80s. Formed in Los Angeles in 1984, the group weathered several lineup changes before solidifying around the talents of vocalist Jani Lane, guitarist Erik Turner, guitarist Joey Allen, bassist Jerry Dixon, and drummer Steven Sweet. The band signed with Columbia Records in January 1988 and released Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich one year later; by that summer, it had climbed into the Top Ten and launched the hit singles "Down Boys," "Sometimes She Cries," and "Heaven," the last of which reached number two on the American charts. Released in the summer of 1990, the follow-up effort Cherry Pie was an even bigger success, climbing into the Top Ten and featuring the high-charting singles "I Saw Red" and "Cherry Pie." Warrant had some trouble continuing their multi-platinum success during the alternative explosion of 1992, although their third album, Dog Eat Dog, did go gold. Ultraphobic (1995) and Belly to Belly (1996), however, failed to chart. The band's lineup began to splinter as the '90s progressed, with the majority of Warrant's founding members leaving the group. Under the Influence arrived in 2001, comprised of various cover songs and two original tracks; it also marked Jani Lane's last recording with the band. He ultimately left in 2004, taking two of Warrant's members with him, and was replaced by former Black 'N Blue vocalist Jaime St. James. While Lane attempted a solo career, the revised version of Warrant released Born Again in 2006. Jaime St. James' tenure in the band proved to be very short, as he was ousted in 2008 in favor of Lane's return. Later that year, Lane left once again and was replaced by Lynch Mob's Rob Mason. Lane was found dead at the age of 47 in a Los Angeles hotel room in August 2011.

Albums:

CD1

Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich is the debut studio album by American rock band Warrant, released in 1989.The album was highly successful, spawning the hit singles "Heaven" (#2, 1989), "Down Boys" (#27, 1989) and "Sometimes She Cries" (#20, 1990). The album peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200.The unique cover art features "Fugazi", an overpaid, amoral infrastructure manager and archetypal white business psychopath. The first four words of the album's title ("Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinkin'...!") were mentioned in the intro to the title track of their 1990 follow-up album Cherry Pie.

CD2

Cherry Pie is the second studio album by American rock band Warrant. The record - which spawned the hits "Cherry Pie", "Uncle Tom's Cabin", and "I Saw Red" - is the band's best-known and highest-selling release. The album peaked at number 7 on The Billboard 200.

CD3

Dog Eat Dog was the third music album by American rock band Warrant. It was released on August 25, 1992 on the Columbia label of Sony Music. The album peaked at number 25 on The Billboard 200.
The album achieved "gold" status in the United States, but was significantly less successful in a commercial sense than the band's first two albums. It is, nonetheless, regarded by most critics as Warrant's strongest record, and a favorite among many devoted fans. The tone and style of the album could be said to be the last stage of the glam metal style during the 80s. It is also the last album to feature all five original members.

Lane was found dead at the age of 47 in a Los Angeles hotel room in August 2011.

Album:

The 1990s were characterized by frequent changes to the band's line-up. Following their Dog Eat Dog world tour Lane temporarily left the band to start a solo career and the band was then dropped by Columbia, following the arrival of grunge and the death of Warrant's long-time manager Tom Hulett. In September 1993, Lane returned to the band and a short U.S. club tour commenced. In May 1994, guitarist Allen left Warrant and was followed by drummer Sweet in the following month. In November 1994, former Kingdom Come member, Rick Steier replaced Allen on guitar and fellow Kingdom Come alumnus James Kottak replaced Sweet on drums. Shortly thereafter, a new record deal was signed with Tom Lipsky of CMC Records in September 1994. A Japanese deal was signed with Pony Canyon Records at the same time.Ultraphobic saw Warrant acknowledging the Grunge phenomenon with a record that openly admitted to a Seattle influence, although was still a natural regression from the hard edged Dog Eat Dog. It is vaguely similar to Danger Danger's Dawn, which was also released in 1995. In particular, the record represented an experimentation with the grunge sounds which had by this time become popular, and which, ironically, had contributed to the band's commercial demise. In songs such as "Undertow" and "Followed" the band attempted to mix pop metal sounds with the alternative styling's of Seattle bands such as Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. This, the band's fourth album was released in March 1995 and, although critically acclaimed, was not as successful as its predecessors. The album featured the singles Family Picnic, Followed and the ballad Stronger Now and the band went on tour again, touring America, Japan and Europe.

Album:

1996 left many Warrant fans scratching their heads. The band was down two original members and had finally resurfaced with a new album and no longer on the mighty Sony label to release it. Belly To Belly Volume One (not sure why the Volume One was in the title, to me it’s just another strange thing that didn’t make sense about this album) as it sounded like a completely different band and NOT the Warrant everyone knew and embraced by their fans. Then again it was 1996. Times changed so quickly for bands like Warrant who seemingly were on top of the world circa 1990-91 selling out 20,000 seat arenas and having to scale back to theaters and clubs of approximately 1,000 people. What the heck happened and where was the Warrant everyone knew?Warrant‘s strategy was to change their sound with the times and hope the record labels and fans would accept them to allow the band to continue to have a career. While this might have worked for acts like David Bowie and Madonna who moved into a ’80s New Wave scene, the ’80s rock to grunge scene was far, far less kind to all bands like Warrant. Arguably the only band to survive and remain unaffected strangely enough was Van Halen. Not even the mighty Guns N’ Roses came out unscathed and took heat for being ‘cheesy’ and a relic of the ’80s.Belly To Belly Volume One sports a completely different sound, in an attempt to blend in with grunge and modern sounding bands that were indicative of the mid-1990s. The album was a commercial flop, not only with the industry but also with Warrant fans who were left abandoned by one of their favorite bands and also the fabric of an entire era that was flourishing just five years prior.Rock journalist Chuck Klosterman in his book Fargo Rock City mentions something interesting:“In 1996, I went to a concert headlined by Vince Neil (this was during his ill-fated “solo” period) that also featured Slaughter and Warrant. All three acts were at the lowest points in their career. But something happened at this show that I will always remember. After his first song, Warrant‘s Jani Lane promised the crowd he would sing ‘Cherry Pie’ and ‘Heaven’ and all the songs he knew everyone had paid to hear, but he just asked that we sit through a half dozen of the new (and to be honest -horrible) songs he had recorded on the unsuccessful ‘Dog Eat Dog’ record. He didn’t ask this as a self-conscious, self-depreciating way; he was almost begging. Basically, he agreed to deliver all the old songs he hated if we would politely listen to the new stuff he cared about.”Interestingly enough, the Dog Eat Dog album bared somewhat of a resemblance of the Warrant sound that made them famous, albeit a little harder and angrier. But Belly To Belly Volume One is a completely different animal. Beaten down by a new decade, a new era, new attitudes and new sounds, Warrant went the route of a modern grunge sound that was accepted by nobody. In this author’s opinion, Belly To Belly Volume One is drab, uninteresting and lacking the extremely catchy hooks and melodies that Jani Lane could write.

Album:

Ever notice that almost every band from whatever style they come from claims their new album will sound like the old stuff and never does? Well, someone finally made good on that promise! Erik Turner said in several posts on the band’s official site that this record isn’t the band trying to break down musical walls or trying to be at all contemporary. It’s Warrant the way Warrant wants to sound and the way they never should have stopped sounding. In other words, as Erik put it, Born Again is the album that should’ve followed Cherry Pie.The first important thing to note is there is a new lead singer in Warrant while Jani Lane continues his three year nervous breakdown. Jani is off playing classic Warrant material on solo tours when he remembers or is sober enough to show up. So, filling the bill as the new vocalist is Jaime St. James formerly of Black ‘N Blue. The result of the new line-up is a band that sounds more like Warrant than Warrant has sounded in the past decade. Perhaps it’s the fact that the guys actually seem to like each other that results in this positive change? Regardless, this album is a throw-back but probably isn’t desired to be seen as one. It’s all new material with the classic Warrant sound that set them apart from the rest.Songs to look out for? Well, there’s quite a few. Very few of the songs leave much to be desired as it is clear that the band made a conscious effort to put forth a complete album with all loose ends tied together… After all, this is their rebirth of sorts. It has to be perfect! That said, after a few times listening through, I’d say you might want to take a listen to songs such as “Dirty Jack” which has an “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” feel to it, “Roxy” which has a classic rock feel to it, “Hell CA” which has a very AC/DC meets Warrant sound to it, “Love Strikes Like Lightning” which has a very Black ‘N Blue vibe, “Glimmer” which is a ballad, and “Bourbon County Line” which has a Buckcherry meets Warrant vibe to it. It is important to note that these songs all sound fresh and new. You can almost call this a re-debut or, as the title might indicate, a rebirth of Warrant as they aren’t trying to be who they used to be but being who they really are and that’s a sleazy rock ‘n’ roll band that made great music that became a trend but didn’t simply follow the trend. Back to Jaime St. James, he sounds very strong on these songs and includes a lot of sleazy additions to the music like “yeah” and “ow” breaks that really add a lot to the songs. That’s part of what makes this album sound so fresh… Jaime sounds like he actually wants to be there singing for Warrant. The negatives of the album? There aren’t many. The only ones I might mention are some song lyrics aren’t as deep as some of Warrant‘s other songs. That’s not to say the lyrics aren’t good, as that isn’t the case, and whatever lyrics I am not crazy about are made up for in the extremely strong guitar hooks and haunting choruses. But, that is something small that perhaps Jani‘s absence does subtract from the new record.Overall, I must say I’m impressed. I went in excited about this record because I do love Warrant and am confident in Erik Turner not allowing the Warrant name to go on anything lacking in quality especially in this effort which is important to the band as they needed a new record to be a musical force and not a cover band of sorts. What I ended up getting is a really strong Warrant album that sounds like Warrant from 1990 and they aren’t sorry about it in the slightest. They want to play “hair metal,” so let them. People like me and others viewing this site will be more than grateful to hear it. Is it a rebirth? I’d say take the CD case, hang it upside down, and spank that sucker on the ass. This baby’s been Born Again!
