Bio:

Blue Öyster Cult (often abbreviated BÖC) is an American rock band from Long Island, New York, whose most successful work includes the hard rock and heavy metal songs "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", "Godzilla" and "Burnin' for You". Since the release of their eponymous debut album in 1972, the band has sold over 24 million albums worldwide, including 7 million in the United States alone.[citation needed] The band's music videos, especially "Burnin' for You", received heavy rotation on MTV when the music television network premiered in 1981, cementing the band's contribution to the development and success of the music video in modern pop culture.Blue Öyster Cult's longest lasting and most commercially successful lineup included Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Bloom (lead vocals, "stun guitar"), Allen Lanier (keyboards, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Joe Bouchard (bass, backing vocals) and Albert Bouchard (drums, percussion, backing vocals). The band's current lineup includes Roeser and Bloom, as well as Jules Radino (drums, percussion), Richie Castellano (keyboard, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), and Kasim Sulton (bass, backing vocals).

Album:

BLUE ÖYSTER CULT is a legendary ('cult' indeed) band that combined adventurous lyrical themes with an aggressive instrumental sound going from hard rock, progressive rock and what they call 'Extraterrestrial Music'. The band’s mystique extended to their album artwork, resulting in some of the most distinctive and iconic LP covers of the rock era. Their former label released 'Blue Öyster Cult – The Columbia Albums Collection' bringing together the group’s 14 official Columbia Records albums, newly remastered. From the pack, I am picking "Club Ninja" (1985), the most criticized album in their entire career, which alienated the core fan base of the band and beyond. The truth is that "Club Ninja" is a very good album, simply BOC just go here for the trend of the mid-'80s: stadium rock with synths and polished production. And that's why melodic rockers and AOR fans like me love this one so much.Actually, detractors accusing BOC to sell their souls to mainstream have not listened "Club Ninja" carefully, as here we find as well truly great pieces of progressive (hard) rock in the best Oyster tradition, and quite well elaborated.Sure, if you take a look at the external songwriters contributing (for the first time in the band's history) with names like AORsters Bob Halligan Jr. or Larry Gotlieb, you know here will be melodic rock and radio oriented AOR tunes, yet arranged and played with BOC's own, particular style."White Flags" is an energetic commercial rocker, followed by the catchy "Dancin' In The Ruins", an extremely melodic track that makes good use of '80s synths and has a very infectious chorus. Next "Make Rock Not War" is a stadium-ready hard rocker with strong guitars / keys and an anthemic chorus sonically in the vein of the classic mid-eighties rockin' AOR style. But as mentioned, there's more progressive (in the meaning of elaborated, not the sound) tracks as the excellent "Perfect Water" possibly one of the best things ever to be recorded by Blue Öyster Cult. Buck Dharma's guitar and vocals mix cohesively from light to heavy in great symbiosis."When The War Comes" offers a very progressive tones as well, with some harmonizing vocals that work quite well for it. The guitars are slow and clunk, but really that plays as a strength to this song. "Madness To The Method" is another very high point, something for long time fans, very classic BOC. Clocking at over 7-minutes, the vocals are strong and there's some great guitar work all along the way."Club Ninja" is a really good album unheard for many people, specially '80s American Melodic Rock AOR fans. It's not your typical album regarding these genres, and there's where precisely resides its charm. An official first time ever remaster was published in 2009 (CD jewel case), but this one included in 'The Columbia Albums Collection' is completely new and far better, with a superior dynamic range. Each album is a replica of the original vinyl LP - front and back, all original artwork, tracks listed as side A and B on the back.A great opportunity to discover a good album - and why not for many - the more commercial and polished side of this legendary band.

Album:

If there's one intriguing album in rock history, both lyrically as musically, "Imaginos" by BLUE OYSTER CULT should be in the top ten. Very hard to find on CD, there was limited editions in recent years, but this is the last remaster (note: this is not the same as the Columbia BOC box set). The reissue label Real Gone / Sony Music assures that this "Imaginos" reissue has been freshly re-mixed too, but this is debatable.I mean; I own the '88 blue vinyl (remember the days?) and in this CD version (and the previous as far I know) some of the tracks significantly differ to their originals. Not just remixed with a slightly different balance in the overall sound, but with, for instance, different guitar solos in some places.Anyway, this is a minor point because the important thing here is the medulla of the work - the songwriting & the concept - as the musical performances are excellent in both versions."Imaginos" took nearly eight years to complete and was originally intended to be the first in a trilogy of solo albums by ex- Blue Öyster Cult drummer & songwriter Albert Bouchard (he was was fired in 1981).In fact, the concept was conceived 20 years before by Sandy Pearlman, the band's original producer and lyricist. It's a story about an alien conspiracy theory that is brought to fruition during the late 19th and early 20th century through the actions of Imaginos, an agent of evil. The tale combines elements of gothic literature and science fiction and is strongly inspired by the work of H. P. Lovecraft.Subtitled 'a bedtime story for the children of the damned', it has an intricate storyline whose often-obscure lyrics contain many historical references, and is still an object of speculation by fans and critics. Thus, "Imaginos" is often considered more as a project of producer Pearlman and ex- drummer Al Bouchard. But the record company forced it to be released under the Blue Öyster Cult moniker.Consequently, apart from real BOC members as Bouchard or Eric Bloom, there was many musicians involved in the recording sessions, including Joe Satriani, Aldo Nova, Robbie Krieger (The Doors) to name a few, whose brought together new musical inspiration. But all the above are just details. "Imaginos" is simply an incredible piece of art. There isn't a duff track here, the disc can be enjoyed as whole following the story (not easy, believe me, as it isn't chronological) or as individual songs. The music speaks for itself and you can take or leave the storyline.Musically is immense, elaborated progressive hard rock that clearly relates the feel of BOC origins. It's difficult to pull out highlights as all are captivating and different from the usual 'rock record'."Astronomy" is one of the songs written by Pearlman many years ago and already recorded by BOC before, but here is delivered in a completely different but excellent form, stripped of atmosphere, mystery and poetic beauty. The other is entitled as the band; "Blue Öyster Cult", a very much evolved version of 'The Subhuman' from the same album. Both are superb and shows how were originally conceived as part of the story, finally, completely devoped here in "Imaginos".You'll be moved by the ferocious hard rocking lust of "I Am The One You Warned Me Of", the deftness of "Les Invisibles" is impressive, and "Del Rio's Song" is catchy & uplifting."The Siege And Investiture Of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle At Weisseria" is an absolute barnstormer that reminds one and all just how powerful this band can be - some classy keyboards emerge from the brutality at the end and the choral repetition of the 'world without end" refrain is very effective. There's an enchanting clime on "In The Presence Of Another World", and the glorious title track "Imaginos" brings outstanding performances by a guitarists pleiad for a grand finale."Imaginos" is considered one of the heaviest albums released by Blue Öyster Cult, and one of their best.I love the melodic and commercial hard rock of their two previous works (which first-time fans hate) but "Imaginos" is a completely different beast. And a great one to tame. When I heard it the first time, didn't like it. But when you get right down to it, this is an album of brilliant, entrancing, intriguing, mind-stompingly wonderful songs.Quite hard to find so grab it while you can.

Album:

Recorded on October 17, 2014 at the Hard Rock Casino in Northfield (OH), this live performance offers a very comprehensive and exciting essay on Blue yster Cult repertoire. The band is literally on fire and performs some of the finest and most beloved songs from the bands history, not forgetting some deeper cut which will make fans very pleased. Spanning three decades, Blue yster Cult has a long history of success. The band has sold more than 24 million records worldwide, including 7 million in the United States alone. Songs like Burnin' for You, Godzilla, Astronomy and (Don't Fear) The Reaper are true classics of international Rock Music. Often cited as a major influence by some of the biggest names of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal (including Iron Maiden and Metallica), Blue yster Cult sound has evolved through the decades touching hard rock, heavy metal, progressive and psychedelic rock. Sometimes referred to as the thinking mans heavy metal band due to their often cryptic lyrics, literate songwriting, and links to famous authors, Blue yster Cult are back and offer the first of a set of live releases which are going to be released during 2020 and will mark one of the most exciting returns of the year in Rock!

The band's current lineup includes Roeser and Bloom, as well as Jules Radino (drums, percussion), Richie Castellano (keyboard, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), and Kasim Sulton (bass, backing vocals).

Album:

Extraterrestrial Live is the American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult's third live album, released in 1982. It primarily documents the band's 1981 tour in support of Fire of Unknown Origin, but also includes two tracks recorded in 1980, during the Black and Blue tour with Black Sabbath. Midway through the 1981 tour, the band fired drummer and founding member Albert Bouchard, replacing him with roadie Rick Downey.Extraterrestrial Live is Blue Oyster Cult’s third, and best, live album. The weak production and muddled performances on 1975’s On Your Feet Or on Your Knees and the rush job “this will keep them going till our next studio album” impression of 1978’s Some Enchanted Evening made those two albums forgettable as far as reproductions of the Cult in concert go.But this year’s double-live album is a different story. Good production and sterling performances by all band members gives Extraterrestrial Live the same magical intensity characteristic of the New York group’s studio recordings. The album has been well thought out in an historical context, providing at least one selection from each of the group’s eight studio albums. From their self-titled debut of 1972 is included the masterful ode to heavy metal, “Cities on Flame”, and from ’73’s Tyranny and Mutation the speedy and sinister “Hot Rails to Hell” and “The Red and the Black”. “Dominance and Submission” is the single entry from their third album, Secret Treaties, while “E.T.I” and the classic “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” are taken from the breakthrough Agents of Fortune record. The songs “Godzilla”, “Dr. Music”, and “Black Blade” are from Spectres, Mirrors, and Cultosaurus Erectus respectively, and tracks from the groups latest studio production, Fire of Unknown Origin, are “Joan Crawford”, “Veteran of the Psychic Wars”, and the hit single “Burnin’ for You”.As one can discern from the above discography, Extraterrestrial Live provides for the uninitiated a well-balanced and representative sample of the music Blue Oyster Cult has made over the past ten years. The only song on Extraterrestrial Live not previously recorded by the Cult is the Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues”, and on their nine-minute version former Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger is brought out for an extended solo battle with lead guitarist Don (Buck Dharma) Roeser. Ten years after he captivated BOC fans with his emotional playing on songs like “Then Came the Last Days of May”, Roeser’s licks on “Roadhouse” and “Veteran of the Psychic Wars” still show him to be a main ingredient in the Blue Oyster Cult sound and one of the classiest heavy-metal guitarists in America.

Line Up:

Eric Bloom – lead vocals on tracks 1-5, 7-8, 10-12, stun guitar, keyboards
Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser – lead guitar, lead vocals on tracks 6, 13
Allen Lanier – keyboards, guitar
Joe Bouchard – bass, lead vocals on track 9
Rick Downey – drums on tracks 2-7, 9-13
Albert Bouchard – drums on "Dominance and Submission" and "Black Blade"

Production:

Sandy Pearlman – producer, management
George Geranios – producer, live sound, engineer, mixing

Album:

By special arrangement with BLUE OYSTER CULT and its management, Real Gone Music / Columbia Legacy Recordings are releasing for the first time officially on CD the band’s complete July 24, 1983 concert at Perkins Palace in Pasadena, CA, titled “Live ’83“, regarded as one of the band’s finest live recording ever.Originally on LP vinyl only in last year’s Black Friday Record Store Day release, the tapes of this show have circulated among fans for decades and have been several bootlegs. Now properly remastered / silver pressed, you can tell the reputation of this show was well earned, as BOC was playing on all cylinders and the tapes managed to capture it all, first-rate from start to finish. Before ‘The Revölution at Night’ album was released in 1983, Blue Öyster Cult marked a major transition for the band away from their classic sound and into a ’80s melodic rock / radio aesthetic.Longtime drummer Albert Brouchard was fired from the band and replaced by roadie Rick Downey. Before that happened, they embarked on a rigorous tour that gave us the dimensional Extraterrestrial Live album.During that summer, their July gig in Pasadena, California, was to make radio airplay. What happened was that it ended up being Blue Öyster Cult’s most beloved bootleg.Real Gone Music has authoritatively released the album in physical form for the first time.”Live ‘83” is a lively and expressive documentation of their electric performance that is impossible to pass up. Here we find the last monument of greatness from their glory days that takes from the philosophy of Kiss’s Alive and launches us into “Stairway to the Stars.” You want the best and you got the best, this song is pure rock and roll friction. From the gate, Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser’s guitar work is the star.Immediately they power into “Harvester of Eyes.” It’s like jet fuel. This is a pure rock and roll party in classic Blue Öyster Cult style.I know you are like me; how does “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” sound? Dominated by keyboards seeping into the sound board, it competes with the great harmonies that capitalize on the song.To end the set, they roar through ten minutes of “Roadhouse Blues” that also pepper in “Love Me Two Times.” They set fire to this classic rocker and turn it into a party jam.

Album:

Frontiers Music Srl will release BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's "50th Anniversary Live - First Night" on December 8, 2023. The first single and video from the album, "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep (Live)" are out today. The legendary American hard rock band BLUE ÖYSTER CULT celebrated its 50th anniversary with a very special set of three sold-out shows in a row in September 2022 at Sony Hall in New York City. For this historic career milestone, each show featured the band playing in its entirety one of their first three albums ("Blue Öyster Cult", "Tyranny And Mutation" and "Secret Treaties"),followed by a set of deep cuts and classics from their other albums. Founding member Albert Bouchard was a special guest on all three nights. The band played for nearly three hours and delivered an amazing set performing the self-titled debut album front to back and the second set also included some fans' favorite and deep cuts along with some of their best-known songs. BLUE ÖYSTER CULT were truly on fire. The Frontiers label will release each night as a special individual package. For over five decades, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Indeed, the Long Island, New York-based band is revered within the hard rock and heavy metal scene for its pioneering work. They occupy a unique place in rock history, because it's one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim and commercial success. The band is often cited as a major influence by other acts such as METALLICA, and BLUE ÖYSTER CULT was listed in VH1's countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.Upon the release of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's self-titled debut album in 1972, the band was praised for its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyrics that could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song. BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's canon includes three stone-cold classic songs that will waft through the cosmos long after the sun has burned out: The truly haunting "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" from 1976's "Agents Of Fortune", the pummeling "Godzilla" from 1977's "Spectres" and the hypnotically melodic "Burnin' For You" from 1981's "Fire Of Unknown Origin". Other notable BLUE ÖYSTER CULT songs include "Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll", "Then Came The Last Days Of May", "I Love The Night", "In Thee", "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars", "Dominance And Submission", "Astronomy", "Black Blade" and "Shooting Shark".The intense creative vision of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's original core duo of vocalist/lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Eric Bloom is complemented by Richie Castellano on guitar and keyboards, and the longtime rhythm section of bass guitarist Danny Miranda and drummer Jules Radino."We realized we're a ‘classic rock' band. That's what we are, that's what we do best, and that's what we know," declares the band. They're proud of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT's classic sound, and pleased the band is creating vibrant work for disenfranchised music lovers who don't like the homogenized, prefabricated pop or sound-alike, formulaic rap-metal that monopolizes the radio airwaves and best-seller charts.BLUE ÖYSTER CULT has always maintained a relentless touring schedule and an album of new material, "The Symbol Remains", was released in October 2020 to rave reviews.

This highly anticipated album marks a fitting finale to the recording legacy of one of rock's most iconic fixtures from the past 50 years. In a thrilling partnership with Frontiers Music, Blue Öyster Cult is set to captivate fans with a collection of reimagined and newly completed songs that span from 1978-2016. Also included is the only known studio recording of their concert classic "Kick Out The Jams" (MC5 cover). Some of the material is from sessions workshopping material for an album, some is from performance rehearsals. All were recorded once in the hopes that someday they'd see the light of day.George Geranios, the band's original audio engineer and an integral part of the band's golden years, co-produced the original 1978-83 recordings along with BÖC. All were originally recorded on reel-to-reel analog tape. They were later transferred to digital audio, which is when modern AI and magical musical talents met and the collection of vintage multi-track recordings was de-mixed, re-mixed, and produced by Steve Schenck and Richie Castellano to become "Ghost Stories".Work in the studio for the album was completed by Richie Castellano along with remaining original members Eric Bloom and Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser, both Albert Bouchard and Rick Downey appear on drums with additional overdubs recorded by Joe Bouchard. All these original lineup members appearing on "Ghost Stories", create a musical journey that traverses decades. As Blue Öyster Cult embraces its 'classic rock' phenomenon status, the anticipation for this album is reaching a crescendo. Fans are eager to experience the culmination of the band's artistic vision and witness the completion of songs that have become part of their folklore. With a legacy spanning over five decades, Blue Öyster Cult continues to be a formidable force in the classic rock scene.
