Bio:

Steve Newman was born in Bedford on July 3rd 1966 and 14 years later was to pick up his first acoustic guitar. It wasn't long before he acquired an electric guitar and formed his first band with school buddy Kim Beadle. He continued to play guitar and experiment with various studio equipment such as drum machines and keyboards. At the age of 16 he joined the college band Early Warning and played numerous gigs to enthusiastic audiences for the following 2 years. All this time Steve was writing and recording songs by very basic means, recording guitars on one tape player then playing the tape back and singing vocals while recording onto a second tape player! In 1984 Steve was asked by John Gilmore to join the Southsea based melodic rock band Jaded Heart as lead guitarist. The five piece band began to write songs together heavily influenced by bands such as Tobruk and the very popular Portsmouth band Explorer. Unfortunately they were never to play live, although they did record a 3 track demo receiving great reviews, shortly after this the band broke up.After a break from the scene in 1988 Steve went on to co-form the Pop Rock band Cloud 10 and his strengths as a songwriter were truly realized. At this point in time Steve's writing was heavily influenced by bands such as The Outfield, Van Stephenson and Sugarcreek. The band, consisting of members Steve on Guitar, Bill Leath(Guitars),Ginge Shurman(Bass), Andy Briar (Drums) were to later be joined by vocalist Darren Ball. The band continued to rehearse and tighten up their sound, eventually producing some recorded rehearsals which caught the attention of Queen's management company. After playing a few shows the band were to eventually split up due to.... you guessed it!... musical, and personal differences.Steve then went back to an intensive period of songwriting after being frustrated by the confines of a band. All this time he had kept in contact with John Gilmore, and after a few lengthy phone calls they decided that the time was right to form another band. Shere Khan was born, they inlisted the help of Johns younger brother Chris Gilmore, on drums, Iain Jacobson on Bass, and the ex Wildfyre, XS singer Phil Bennett. Steve was back in the driving seat writing songs with John, this time in a more heavier direction and influenced by bands such as Bonfire and TNT. After 2 years and a name change to Cairo the band was to go from strength to strength, entering the Southsea Battle of the Bands competition and completing a string of dates including some live appearances at festivals in London. The band then became a four piece after John and Chris decided to leave, Chris was replaced by Mark Mulholland on drums and the group continued to gig regularly until it's final demise in 1993.After a short break from music, disillusioned at the scene and lack of support for rock music in general Steve then started to write songs which would form the basis of the first Newman album. During this time he received a call from Mark Mulholland asking him if he would like to audition for a band that Mark Thompson-Smith (Idol Rich, Praying Mantis) was putting together. He agreed and was soon in rehearsal for returning to the live scene in the Mark Thompson-Smith Band. Unfortunately, due to the drummer being seriously ill the band was put on hold indefinitely. However, through this meeting both Steve and Mark TS would form a great friendship and mutual respect for one another.Steve went back to writing more songs and asked Mark TS if he would like to sing on the album he was putting together, however, unfortunately, due to Mark's other commitments he was unable to find the time needed. Steve then set about trying searching for another vocalist but very soon realized that good ones were not easy to find. After another year and the album musically completed he decided to go into the studio and sing the songs himself. Another few weeks of frustration and hard work ensued but finally he was happy with the results. Steve submitted the recordings to Ivan Gunn, who was so impressed with what he heard he approached Point Music in Germany. It was at this time that Ivan suggested that the songs would need to be re-recorded. Lionel Hicks was approached to work on the album and although he was very keen to work on the production unfortunately his commitments with his band Balance Of Power were too great at the time. Ivan then approached Chris Jones (Freefall, Kick) to work on the album and after a couple of meetings in London Steve and Chris went about planning how the album should be recorded. Steve inlisted the help of William Marshall to play bass and Mark Mulholland to contribute drums.

Album:

It is a strong piece of AOR & rock, with an emphasis on more keyboard influenced songs and an modern, but 80's influenced sound. But the production is with 90's values, insuring that this does not sound dated in any way. Any fan of Escape's back catalogue should be pleased to add this to it.Steve Newman produced this album himself, which he has done a good job of. His voice is one I can't pigeon hole, so I will just say that it is quite a deep voice and capable of holding a good melody. In typical grand rock style, the album opens with One Step Closer. This sounds remarkably close to the style of The Distance. There is a small connection there - the label and Delwyn Brooks who mixed both records.Desperate Hours compares a little to early Survivor - strong vocals and guitar without going over the top. The songs rolls along comfortably.Don't Walk Away is one of the album's standouts and a very good track. A big anthem chorus is the highlight of this mid paced keyboard filled AOR rocker. I like the instrumental break also.Judgement Day is a cool moody mid tempo track. It the chorus comes and goes from the verse with little addition to the sound, save for some extra harmony vocals. Great effect.Should've Been Me opens the ballad account. This also has a Heartland feel to it, but stands alone regardless. A mid tempo and mid sized AOR anthem. Some good vocals.Taboo follows the route of the Harlan Cage album. Yep, the guys go guitar heavy, and relegate the keyboards to low in the mix, in this mid tempo hard rocker.Fire Of Love continues to rock harder then the rest of the album, but not as intensely as Taboo. But there is a better chorus and overall melody to this track. A good anthem-ish tune.Strongest Heart sees the album continue to get better and better. This is the only other ballad. Like Should've Been Me, it is not typical ballad fare, but a slow to mid paced AOR ballad. Some really good harmonies throughout this.Strange Animal is an OK track. A mid paced rock song, the hooks are not quite as prevalent as some of the other tunes. However, I just love the way the song picks up tempo at the end. It turns into a real anthem with some blazing guitars that could have been even better had they kept going. The Call makes up for that big time. In fact, this is my pick of the album.A good pace, strong melodies, a big chorus and plenty of harmonies make this song.Joanne ends the album on a high note. A good solid uptempo melodic pop rocker.I have been playing this album a lot over the past few weeks and have to say it is a real grower. It only adds to the high standard of release Escape have been keeping to.And I must say that Escape's packaging has been of equally high quality. This looks really nice.So if you are a fan of the label and keyboard filled pop rock albums, check this out now!

Album:

After over 15 years of hard work and a series of quality albums, Steve Newman has established himself as a highly respected name among the Melodic Rock / AOR fans.A lot of water has passed under the bridge since his self-titled debut back in 1997, so with the album long out of print he and his band NEWMAN have taken advantage of the advances in studio technology since them to re-record the album. Here we are today, 2014, and NEWMAN has re-recorded their first album, offering the chance to fans not only to complete the Newman collection, but to listen to these songs in a new shape, mastered with new technology, and added bonus tracks that were written at the time of the original sessions. The material from the first album is more straight ahead in style than Neman's more recent adventurous releases. Broadly the songs fall into two categories; classic, bouncy British AOR in the mould of FM or Shy, such as on the opener "If It’s Love" which is still a live favourite to this day, "Let Your Heart Rule Your Head" and the keyboard driven "That Kind Of Girl".The other style, which will probably appeal more to present-day Newman fans, is in a series of rocking, moodier, more atmospheric pieces, notably the lush ballad "Say You Believe", "Faith" whose spacious feel shows off his deep vocal style perfectly, and the great "Tears Are Not Enough" which closed the original album. For added value the original 10 tracks on the album are accompanied by 4 bonus tracks penned at the same period but never recorded and previously unreleased. All these are really good tunes, mixing the smooth AOR melodies of mid-tempo "Crush On You" (love the keyboards), with cool riffs as heard on the bluesy rocker "Backdoor Man"."Love By Design" adds a slightly funkier feel to the rocking riff, while the elegant AOR ballad "Stand Up" reminds you masters Strangeways."Newman ST 2014" is Classic British AOR / Melodic Rock made with style, next to Strangeways, FM & Airrace, now re-recorded with a very good production and offering 4 good previously unreleased tracks. This is a Limited Edition, CD only release (500 copies), so hurry up, there's few still available at AOR Heaven Records.

Album:

Now, for some reason unbeknownst to me, I never really got into Mr Newman (F’narr) or the band Newman. A small oversight on my part which was rectified a few years back writing for another website whereby an actual CD fell thru the letterbox and I was completely transfixed. It wasn’t a Newman album per se, but a quite cracking side project with Mark Thompson-Smith called 'Big Life'. I managed to catch part of them (Newman) live at the ill-fated Z Roxx fest a couple of years ago. My points of Newman reference are as about as obscure and as rare as rocking horse shit. I apologise to Mr Newman for this glaring omission in my record collection. Fast rewind a couple of years back and ‘Siren’ was one of my fave albums of that year.Back to the present and Newman have blown me away (again!) with this new album, 'The Elegance Machine'. Albums nowadays are recorded on a Trevor Eve (Shoestring!), but Steve has the knack of turning out these albums on a big production scale that big record companies would struggle to replicate. Not only that, the bloke knows how to get a striking album cover drawn up that looks like its been completed way beyond its budget.Steve has gone for the ‘if it aint broke’ skool of rock – Rob McEwen (drummer for the last 8 Newman albums returns), and brings in a couple of mates, Mark Thompson-Smith of afore-mentioned 'Big Life' who contributed BVs to ‘Illuminate’, ‘Send Us Salvation’ and ‘Pretender Surrender’; and Geoff Wootton for BVs on ‘The Suit’, ‘One Good Reason’, and ‘Halo’.Steve and the band in happier days!If anything, 'The Elegance Machine' builds on Siren and is a more hard-edged affair, and that is certainly a big plus. Opener, ‘The Suit (Skyscraper)’ comes out of the starting blocks quicker than Usain Bolt after a dodgy curry. Once past the irritable synth opening, title track 'The Elegance Machine' puts Newman back on the rails with its Newman (™) pulsating riff, sonic backing vocals, and instantly sing-along chorus. It’s the type of riff that Whitesnake have been looking for the last 10 years. ‘Don’t Stay Lonely’ has a Journey-esque chorus, and wears its 80s influence firmly and proudly on its sleeve. You can’t sing the words ‘Don’t Stay Lonely without thinking Steve Perry!Steve goes into the loft for one his bezzie mates (Mark Thompson-Smith), dusts him down, sticks him on charge and lets him loose on the fast paced rocker, with ‘Illuminate’ being the pick of the 3 that MT-S appears on. ‘Confess' is standard fare, but even Newman’s standard is still better than some other bands can muster. 'Halo', in contrast is like a kick to the nuts in comparison, and Geoff Wootton is brought in for some BVs. It will bring comparisons to U2 as the tone is very ‘The Edge’ (why the fuck Mr & Mrs. Edge called him ‘The’ is beyond me!). It will surely be a staple in the live set, due to its uplifting and crowd participant chorus. ‘Prayer For Apollo’ is what it says, a space themed track about Apollo 13. Steve’s not one to generally go for the ‘cock-rock’ school of songwriting, he’s far too intelligent a writer. This is shown on ‘She Walks In Silence’, a song about domestic violence.Such is his output; both Steve and the band that bears his name should be a household name. I know he is in certain homes (especially a Spurs loving one in S.Wales), but nowhere near enough. All I can say is that existing Newman fans will be salivating at this, and if there’s any justice, he should pick up a new set of devotees along the way.Cracking stuff and highly recommended

Album:

Formed in 1997, NEWMAN always delivers consistency and quality in the melodic rock realm. “Aerial” is no exception. “Aerial” can be added to another fresh hit in NEWMAN’s discography. It is also the perfect album to lure in new followers. If you are new to NEWMAN, don’t worry, it’s okay. NEWMAN has created 10 other albums for you to enjoy as well. Definitely take a listen to the album, “The Art Of Balance.” While “Aerial” is still a highly praised album, “The Art of Balance” still holds the title to NEWMAN’s best. Regardless, you can count on NEWMAN to give you good music to listen to.“Aerial” features twelve tracks, all of which are consistent to the standards of melodic rock and exceeding expectation. The artwork of “Aerial” is a classy, tranquil piece of work which should give you an idea on what to expect– quality, consistency, classy, and inspiring musicianship and nothing less. “Aerial” is full of catchy choruses, vibrant hooks, and melodies that make this album extremely enjoyable. Songs like “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” is on repeat on my media player. I can’t stop playing it over and over. “Always Strangers,” and “Don’t Wake The Lion” are some of the album’s highlight features. The vocals of Steve Newman just hit in all the right places, highly aligned with the music and filled with soul and passion that instantly hooks you and makes you want to sing along at the top of your lungs in the car. Who cares if people are staring, you are listening to great music and it needs to be heard, damnit! Think JOURNEY but a little heavier.“Aerial” begins its show with “Fear of Flying,” packed with lots of heavy punches and bold riffs.“Vertigo (Leap Of Faith)” is another great track featuring crisp riffs that are complimented by the keyboard. “Vertigo (Leap Of Faith)” is a beautiful combination of notes that have created a melodic rock bliss. Highly recommended!

Album:

NEWMAN apparently is one of the most productive bands out there when it comes to melodic rock. Their latest studio effort Aerial is still kind of fresh, but now AOR Heaven Records will release “Decade II“, a kind of expanded best-of containing a 2-disc set. There's no less then 17 tracks on each CD, 34 track in total. However, this is not just a 'compilation'. Steve Newman and his band has re-recorded all songs especially for this release.Half of the songs has been selected from the five albums Newman released in the last ten years, but the other half are unreleased, or at least rare songs (e.g. Japanese bonus tracks) taken from that very period.Newman already released some time ago 'Decade I', covering the first ten years / discography of the band from 1997 to 2007. Now it's time for the second decade of the band, from 2007 - 2017, and "Decade II".The good thing here comes from two sides; the 17 'best of' songs have been re-recorded so are some kind of new, fresh. And the other 17 songs are like a new album, because most are unreleased.Newman has been faithful to the original versions, so he have here a varied material ranging from Melodic Hard Rock to AOR.

Line-Up:

Steve Newman - Vocals, Guitar, and Keyboards

Album:

Released via AOR Heaven Records, the first NEWMAN album in 3 years “Ignition” is finally here, 12 songs in a natural continuation from 2017’s “Aerial” release. Since then Steve Newman has been busy writing songs with the likes of Toby Hitchcock, joined the band Burn who released the excellent ‘Ice Age’ at the end of 2017, plus playing a few live shows supporting Terry Brock among others. The opening duo of ‘End Of The Road’ and ‘Chasing Midnight’ are prime examples of what to expect on a Newman album – riff driven melodic rock, with a sprinkling of keys. But just when you think it is business as usual, the title track appears, a neat diversion with its electronica / keyboards to the fore. Newman funking it up if you will. Those after some classy AOR ‘Welcome To The Rush’ fits the bill, as does the semi ballad ‘Promise Me’ – marvel at the riffs, vocals and keys, plus an earworm of a chorus. There’s soaring vocals on ‘Worth Dying For’ – Steve is helped by two singers om the harmonies, ‘To Go On Loving You’ adds an early ’90s bounce to the proceedings, then, and call me nuts, I hear some Peterik-like feel to ‘Moving Target’.Steve Newman is one of the most consistent artists in the melodic rock world, always producing albums chock full of glorious melodies and memorable songs. This time around he has added a few musical twists, to help keep the Newman sound fresh.‘Ignition’ is one of his best to date, pure melodic rock bliss – jump on in!

Line-Up:

Steve Newman - Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards
Rob McEwen - Drums, Percussion

With:

Dave Bartlett - Backing Vocals On "End Of The Road", "Ignition", "Moving Target"

02. Chasing Midnight (4:44)
03. Ignition (3:55)

05. To Go On Loving You (5:15)
06. Moving Target (4:21)
07. Last Chance (4:29)
08. Life In The Underground (5:07)
09. Wild Child (4:40)

Album:

NEWMAN is a melodic Rock / AOR band, emerging from the United Kingdom, formed by vocalist Steve Newman. Since 1998 melodic Rock artist Newman have released quite a selection of release, you ought to check out his website for the numerous examples. Through AOR Heaven, Newman releases his tenth album “Siren”.“Had Enough” was an easy choice as the album’s best on my bill, an addictive anthem, catchy as it figures, amazing AOR sensation, memorable riffs, crushing guitar solo, a flip back to FOREIGNER Little similarity to FOREIGNER. “Scar Of Love”, opening the album, has quite an energy, cool rocker and well recorded drum and bass, Newman as a vocalist is quite nice, I like his style. “Another Bitch Of A Night”, heavier with its riffs, smacking WHITESNAKE igniting the Blues, catchy, classy, the works. “When It Comes To Love” is a one of the old guitar, a remembrance of the mighty early 80s and late 70s of the genre, great vintage Hard Rock, no need for further heaviness. “Some Kind Of Wonderful” has some great drumming, modern like keyboards, kick ass riffing, a little strong for your average AOR, the soloing nearly dropped me to my knees. “Feel Her Again” sliding between Popish features and energetic Rock, with a similarity to WET, taking its toll, starring as an 80s Hard Rock emblem. “Don’t Know Why” shares a few pointers off “Hold The Line” by TOTO, a sure classic rocker, 70s oriented with an incredible solo effort. The beautiful ballad “The Foolish One” is taking it nice and slow, highly harmonic, an AOR power moment.Others that would fit your nature are: “Crossfire” cracking with heaviness, titled track “Siren” is melodic with various of vocal similarities to Jorn Lande and “Arcadia” where I really enjoyed the lyrics and the great riffery effort.Summing this one up Steve Newman is the creator of a hearted Hard Rock, ranging between the genre’s classiest decades. “Siren” is a melodic piece of mastery, well written, catchy as hell with fine musicians to accompany its proceedings. Newman as a frontman is darn impressive, fluent and powerful. Fans of NEWMAN will have an unbelievable time with this one; of course also fans of Hard Rock and AOR. Get ready to hear the sirens call.

Line-Up:

Steve Newman - Vocals, Guitar, and Keyboards
Rob McEwen - Drums & Percussion
Shaun Bessant - Lead Guitar on “When It Comes To Love”
Robert Säll - Lead Guitar on “Feel Her Again”

Album:

In 1997 singer, songwriter Steve Newman formed the band Newman and since 1998 have been producing consistently 13 high-quality albums filled with hook-laden songs and thought-provoking lyrics. After the release of the album Ignition in March 2020, the band also announced they would be playing the HEAT festival in Germany at the end of 2020, and also a view to playing shows in both the UK and Europe, it was to be a busy year. Unfortunately at that time, a little-known virus from China had other ideas, and the rest, and indeed, up to the present, as they say, is now history. As things progressed during April and May it became clear (or rather not so clear) that with this constantly changing situation it was impossible to try and schedule any live shows. The decision was taken in July to start work on a new studio album.Recording and mixing was completed in April of 2021 on the 13th Newman studio release. Entitled Into The Monsters’ Playground the new album boasts a more “in your face” sound from the opener “Start This Fire” through the anthemic choruses of “Hurricane Sky” and “Icon”.Slowing in pace for the heartfelt “Lightning Tree” subsequently exploding back into rock territory with “Give Me Tonight” and the title track “The Monsters’ Playground”. The unmistakable Newman sound is here in abundance, the fine balance between the hard-hitting guitars and the lush keyboards backed by a powerful backbeat. As the cover art suggests there is definitely a storm coming.Produced By Steve Newman; Recorded At Chrome Dome Studios, London, England between August 2020 and April 2021 All songs written and arranged by Steve Newman.
