Bio:

KHARMA was a highly regarded melodic Rock outfit, rooted in an 1986 formation entitled vANEssa, this act assembled by Montonegran native Dragan Tanaskovic on guitar and keyboard player Atilla Szabo, a Swedish born Hungarian. Enlisting drummer Stefan Lindgren the pair cut demos at Dragan's Bohus Studios. Although vANEssa demos elicited strong record company interest the band, having replaced Edman with Peter Wennerberg by this juncture, failed to secure a deal. A decade later the tapes prompted MTM Music to offer a deal with the condition the former MADISON, GLORY and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN credited Gbran Edman be enlisted as vocalist. Re-recording the earlier material under the new banner of KHARMA the group also pulled in the services of YNGWIE maimsTEEN keyboard player Mats Olausson for these sessions. Bass would be delegated to Joel Starander of GEISHA and TOT. repute. KHARMA drummer Steve Speed (Stefan Lindgren) scored a notable success in 2000 with his unquie Rock ABBA tribute THE BLACK SWEDEN. By 2001 Edman would be heading up a fresh act entitled CROSSFADE. During late 2004 Joel Starander put in guest studio work for AOR studio project HEARTBREAK RADIO. A further Gbran Edman fronted venture was unveiled in spring 2006, GEFF being the Hard Rock construct involving guitarist Ralf Jedestedt, Also pitching in would be a rhythm section of former SILVER MOUNTAIN and SNAKE CHARM. bass player P8r Stadin and drummer Anders Johansson of HAMMERFALL and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN repute. Goran Edman about KHARMA...Project KHARMA requested by Magnus Soderqvist on MTM. I felt very skeptic about doing songs out of a 10-year-old demo but when I heard the new material I started to feel the potential of the band. Atilla is an outstanding songwriter and from the hard work and all confrontations a friendship developed that also contributed to the final result of the production. The chemistry in the band is easily underestimated I think. It was also a privilege to be able to work in a high tech top class studio such as Dragan's Bohus Sound Recordings. The pre production of the vocal arrangements became the final master and the result felt very spontaneous when we did not have to deal with the magic demo syndrome.

Album:

Probably the best AOR sweden ever have produced. Bombastic, pomp-esque AOR with a superb Goran Edman behind the microphone. You have tons of influences here with bands like New England, Kansas and Styx just to mention three. Guitarplayer Dragan said once that if he ever will produce an own aor album, it must be as good as the just mentioned bands to fit in his collection, well he have sure succeded. More than a must people! this is a real gem. Some of the songs on this album were actually written back in the 80s, when Kharma went by the name Vanessa. Some of the songs from their famous demo have been re-recorded for this CD, as well as some newly written songs, and wow, what an album! Worth noticing is that the vocals are handled by vocal-god Gøran Edman (Malmsteen, Glory, Street Talk, Reingold, John Norum, Brazen Abbott).Although this band is based in Sweden, it doesn't have the typical Swedish AOR sound. Some songs are pure hard-rock, some more AOR-ish and some songs have a distinct pomp influence. Besides the straight-ahead hard rock songs, I can hear a lot of Queen and Robbie Valentine influences in parts of this material. This is prime time AOR or melodic rock, whatever you call it. The melodies and choruses are in focus all the way, but the instrumentation and production is absolutely supreme as well. You will find a nice mix of catchy rockers and beautiful ballads on this album. Kharma show great skills in the songwriting department and they certainly deliver the goods as production, songs, instrumentation and vocals are top notch.Only a couple of songs strike me as mediocre, which affects the final rating, but the rest of the material is absolutely awesome and should not be missed by any fan of AOR or melodic heavy. Kharma comes as a breath of fresh air to the AOR scene as this must be some of the best and most refreshing material of the genre so far this year.
