Bio:

“Inner Shrine” are formed by Luca Liotti and Leonardo Moretti in 1995 in Firenze/ Italy. The aim of the band is to create a project of complete art: music, lyrics and images have to be the three shapes of the same idea. Luca plays guitar, synth, programs samples, and sings. Leonardo plays bass and writes lyrics. In 1996 Luca and Leonardo together with other five musicians release their “Promo 1996” containing the tracks “Fatum”, “Dream On”, “Subsidence” and “Outro”. The line up is: Claudio Tovagli, drums, Pierfrancesco Cigliana, keyboards, Claudio Canneti, rhythm guitar and artwork, Cecilia Boninsegni, soprano, Sara Galleni, female voice. Their music was completely innovative for that period: the union of death metal, black metal, doom, progressive rock with death growls and a soprano voice. At the end of 1996 Inner Shrine signs a deal with “Dragonhearth Records”/Audioglobe. In 1997 Luca and Leonardo, with the same line-up of the “Promo 1996” produce the first album: “Nocturnal Rhymes Entangled in Silence”. This album is the first step in the “Alchemical Trilogy” based on the three colours of Alchemy (black, white and red/gold). The aim of the band is to express in music a three albums’ concept on alchemy and western/oriental spirituality. “Nocturnal Rhymes…” is the “black” album. As every Inner Shrine’s album, “Nocturnal…” is full of symbols that can be found by the listeners in music, lyrics and images. Lyrics are in English and Ancient Latin. “Nocturnal…” is released by SPV and licensed on AMG in Russia and Rock Empire in Taiwan. In 2000 Luca and Leonardo release the second album “Fallen Beauty”. This album is the “White” album of the trilogy. The music is a mixture of metal, doom, classical music and flamenco. The line up is changed, featuring Claudio Tovagli, drums;Cecilia Boninsegni, soprano, and Anna Vignozzi, female voice as session singers. Lyrics are in English and Ancient Latin. “Fallen Beauty” is released by SPV and licensed on AMG in Russia and Rock Empire in Taiwan. In 2004 Luca and Leonardo release the third and last album of the Alchemical trilogy: “Samaya”. This album is the “Red/Golden” album and its title means “Seal” to represent the evolution of the music in a more complete and unique style, very far from the "easy listening" stile of metal. The music is a mixture of metal, classical and opera music. In this album Luca and Leonardo play all instruments and Cecilia Boninsegni sings as session soprano. Lyrics are all in Ancient Latin. “Samaya” is released by SPV and licensed on AMG in Russia and Rock Empire in Taiwan. 2010: Luca and Leonardo released the album “Mediceo”, an homage to the beloved city of Firenze and to its history.

Album:

Inner Shrine’s fifth album, Pulsar, takes on the concept that we have seen time and time again, depicting a post-apocalyptic world, but with a different approach, clinging on the idea of evolution and change taking place, after a horrid end to the world. Pulsar is a Gothic sounding album, one layered over with symphonic elements that seek to portray the fall of earth in its own unique twist.Gothic metal doesn't usually make its rounds to me very often. But in the past, I have found pleasure dipping into the sort. Inner Shrine is a more violent and atmospheric version of Gothic metal. The opening track Black Universe begins with a futuristic sounding ambiance, and quickly emerges with a simple beat and a tremolo style picking from the guitar. A bit more tenacious drums arise adjacent to heavier chugs from the guitars, but the keyboards really carry the song forward, like a lot of the songs, giving it the proper post-apocalyptic sound. The Last Day on Earth becomes a bit tiresome. There is a lot of emphasis on the keyboards with this track making it a bit repetitive with this slower attitude. The main title track Pulsar really picks up the pieces after the slow venture. It’s an extremely fun song filled with a fantastic atmosphere rich attractive sounding chords. Peace Denied may have been one of my favorite tracks on this album. It may tad bit a slower piece, but it delves into more dark corners. The guitar work in particular followed a simple style, but the dark atmospheres they create alongside the keyboards are done well and very memorable.Pulsar may have been stale in a few areas, but Inner Shrine’s fifth record was a surprisingly pleasing experience. It may not be the strongest sounding Gothic album I have heard, but the symphonic elements used and the overall theme creates a unique atmosphere worthy of leaping into for any fan of gothic music.
